  • In tests/daikon-tests/Makefile, the default DAIKONDIR was the tests directory rather than the root of the clone. It is now computed with :=, as in the other test Makefiles.
  • The staging target no longer hard-codes a JDK 11 path for Javadoc. It first runs the new java/Makefile target check-javadoc-enabled, so it fails immediately, not after a long build, if Javadoc would be skipped (Java 8 or SKIP_JAVADOC=1).
  • daikon.bashrc sets only DAIKONDIR and PATH. The Makefiles compute JAVA_HOME and the classpath themselves, and the Perl scripts find their modules via FindBin/use lib.
  • daikon-dev.bashrc: add a missing / when computing DAIKONDIR.

Related: this makes #911 unnecessary (now closed). Land this before #897; #897 conflicts with it on the staging javadoc line, and the conflict should be resolved by taking this version.

…kon.bashrc

- In tests/daikon-tests/Makefile, the default DAIKONDIR was the tests
directory rather than the root of the clone.
- The staging target sets JAVA_HOME along with PATH when it uses JDK 11 for
Javadoc, and fails if Javadoc was not built.
- daikon.bashrc warns if JAVA_HOME is not a JDK.

Walkthrough

Shell initialization now sets DAIKONDIR and updates PATH without configuring Java, classpath, or Perl variables. The development script and test Makefile update DAIKONDIR resolution. The staging target checks whether Javadoc is enabled, and its Javadoc build uses the current environment.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c2d45

Users in this setup can work around the Java build failure by adding JAVA_HOME/bin to PATH. The issue is limited to that documented workflow, so the PR is mergeable with a small follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c2d45

The new check rejects disabled Javadoc before staging directories or permissions are changed. Publishing permissions and publication mechanics remain unchanged. Release builds now rely on the configured Java tools rather than a fixed JDK path; consistency and trustworthiness of that environment remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant exposure is the developer or release operator's process authority and the release directories that operator can modify. The inspected changes do not establish a new remote or tenant-controlled entrypoint, additional privilege, or IAM or secret authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An attacker able to influence the operator's executable search path could influence the newly ambient Javadoc command. However, the base staging workflow already executed ambient chmod, mkdir, cp and build tools under that operator's authority. Without evidence of a selectively attacker-controlled Javadoc source, this does not establish an introduced privilege boundary or materially expanded attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new control enforces Javadoc eligibility, not executable identity or provenance. Both check and generation use SKIP_JAVADOC, while the generation command comes from JAVADOC, defaulting to javadoc on PATH.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failure containment improves for known disabled-Javadoc configurations because rejection precedes staging mutation. Protection against later failures, concurrent staging and incomplete publication remains dependent on the pre-existing release procedure rather than a new rollback or transaction mechanism.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Configure release builds with an explicit trusted Java toolset so javac-based eligibility and the eventual Javadoc invocation use the same installation. This would reduce tool-selection drift; it is a hardening proposal, not a verified vulnerability.
