Point the build at an existing Containerfile
This configuration cannot build because dockerfile paths are resolved relative to devcontainer.json, so this selects .devcontainer/Containerfile; neither that file nor a root Containerfile exists in the reviewed commit tree. The context setting does not change that path resolution, so opening this repository in Codespaces or Dev Containers fails before creating the container. Add the intended Containerfile or reference an existing build definition. See the Dev Container Dockerfile guide.

can you look at the situation that is listed in pull #242 and you will see the problem and maybe the solution?

useful but see #242 to see the complexity then address as is best possible

Replace the nonexistent deps recipe
Once the image build is fixed, container setup still reports a lifecycle-command failure because the repository's root Justfile has no deps recipe; the only matching recipe found repo-wide is inside an unrelated provisioning template. Since postCreateCommand runs in the mounted workspace, just deps cannot complete for this checkout, so it should invoke an existing setup recipe or the recipe must be added.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

can you make that addition to the Justfile?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
yes, can you add this to the Justfile recipes?

This new configuration omits its licence identifier even though 3-practice/JSON-POLICY.adoc explicitly carves out devcontainer.json from canonical JSON so that its JSONC comments can carry SPDX headers. The repository's PR checklist likewise requires new code/config files to declare MPL-2.0; add the expected // SPDX-License-Identifier: MPL-2.0 header rather than leaving this file unlicensed.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
ah, yes, it should have the MPL-2.0 (code) CC-BY-SA-4.0 (prose) indication, can you fix that?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
yes, the MPL-2.0 (code) and CC-SA-BY-4.0 (prose) is correct, not sure why that is omitted, unless it is due to an incompatibility with ijson-jcs (in https://github.com/hyperpolymath/ijson-jcs - or if that is the one in need of change?

Review comments at @.devcontainer/devcontainer.json:
- Line 1: Ensure the `just deps` post-create command can run by adding a `deps`
recipe to the root `Justfile` and ensuring the container image installs `just`.
Keep the recipe focused on the dependency setup required by the existing
post-create step.
- Line 1: The devcontainer build references a Containerfile that is not present
under .devcontainer. Update the build.dockerfile path in the devcontainer
configuration to point to the intended existing container file, or add the
referenced file at the expected location.

Provide the deps recipe before running the post-create command.
.devcontainer/devcontainer.json runs just deps, but the root Justfile defines no deps recipe. The post-create step can therefore fail even when just is installed. Add the required recipe and ensure that just is installed in the container image.

Review comment at @.devcontainer/devcontainer.json at line 1:
Ensure the `just deps` post-create command can run by adding a `deps` recipe to
the root `Justfile` and ensuring the container image installs `just`. Keep the
recipe focused on the dependency setup required by the existing post-create
step.

official Dev Container specification build.dockerfile path relative to build.context devcontainer.json
💡 Result:
**`build.dockerfile` is relative to the folder containing `devcontainer.json`, not to `build.context`.** `build.context` is also relative to `devcontainer.json` and defaults to `"."`. ([github.com](https://github.com/devcontainers/spec/blob/main/docs/specs/devcontainerjson-reference.md))
For example, if `devcontainer.json` is in `.devcontainer/`, you could set `"dockerfile": "Dockerfile"` and `"context": ".."` to use `.devcontainer/Dockerfile` while building with the repository root as context. This follows the spec’s separate path bases.

Add the referenced container file.
"dockerfile":"Containerfile" is resolved relative to .devcontainer/, so this configuration requires .devcontainer/Containerfile. That file does not exist. Add it or set build.dockerfile to the intended existing path.

The devcontainer build references a Containerfile that is not present under

configuration to point to the intended existing container file, or add the

@hyperpolymath These were review suggestions, not changes I applied. The scripts shown in the review only inspected the repository.
I checked #242 and its comments. That issue concerns AffineScript standard-library gaps. Its closure comments refer to fixes in affinescript#504. It does not specify a container image or dependency setup, so it does not answer these devcontainer findings.
The current code still has both problems:
build.dockerfilepoints to.devcontainer/Containerfile, which is missing.postCreateCommandrunsjust deps, but the rootJustfilehas nodepsrecipe.
The next step is to define the intended development environment. Then the configuration can reference a suitable container file and run a supported setup command. Adding an empty deps recipe would not establish that environment.

are you able to create it but as a Containerfile if it can, which I do think Docker accepts, if it does not, do it as a Dockerfile, and if if not adjust the direction that is given to resolve it to that Containerfile
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@hyperpolymath Yes. Docker accepts a file named Containerfile when the build explicitly selects it. The devcontainer’s build.dockerfile setting provides that selection. There is no need to rename it to Dockerfile.
Thanks for the naming guidance. I’ll start the code-change planning workflow with this scope:
- Create
.devcontainer/Containerfilewith the required development tools, includingjust, and the configurednonrootuser. - Keep
"dockerfile":"Containerfile"and"context":"..". These select.devcontainer/Containerfileand the repository-root build context. - Check the repository’s dependency requirements and fix the
just depssetup step. - Preserve the canonical JSON format in
.devcontainer/devcontainer.json.

Follow-up stacked on #1281 / #1292. The post-fix CI rerun exposed one unrelated but blocking Gate D drift: the existing top-level `.devcontainer` (added by #1282) was absent from `standards-map.toml`. Adds the root machinery entry and increments `entry_count` from 128 to 129. This is an honest map update, not an exemption. `bash scripts/check-standards-map.sh --repo .` now passes all five assertions (129 mapped paths; 77 top-level entries mapped; count 129). This resolves the only failed check identified on the latest #1281 run; the Hypatia baseline validation, Hypatia scan, Repo self-tests, and K9-SVC validation are green. --------- Co-authored-by: arena-agent <297053741+arena-agent@users.noreply.github.com>
