Closes #63

This PR adds rootless Podman support to the run-spaceapp launcher while keeping Docker the default and leaving existing Docker installations untouched.

What changed

  • New engine abstraction — packages/run-spaceapp/src/engine.mjs
    • normalizeEngine, composeBinary, defaultEngine, version parsing/gating, and Podman-machine introspection helpers (inspectPodmanMachine, listPodmanMachines, podmanMachineResourceInfo, podmanMachineResizeGuidance).
    • Supported engines: docker (default) and podman. Podman minimum version is gated to >= 4.9.0.
  • Configuration — src/index.mjs
    • CONFIG_SCHEMA_VERSION bumped to 5; engine is persisted in config.json.
    • migrateConfig defaults missing engine to "docker" for all older schema versions.
    • composeCommand(engine) now returns podman compose … when the saved engine is Podman.
    • Workspace bind mounts append selinux: "Z" so workspace add works on SELinux-enforcing hosts.
  • Static command dispatch — src/cli.mjs
    • spawnTrustedCommand keeps its static switch; a new case "podman" dispatches fixed podman argument arrays.
    • doctor reports engine, version, rootless/rootful mode, cgroup version, and resource-limit delegation.
    • install, upgrade, and verifyStorage pass the configured engine into inspectStoragePlan.
  • Engine detection & macOS machine checks — src/prerequisites.mjs
    • ensureDockerAvailable probes Podman when --engine podman is used.
    • On macOS it diagnoses Podman machine state (missing / stopped / under-resourced) and prints resize guidance when CPU < 4, memory < 7 GiB, or disk < 15 GiB.
  • Storage probes — src/storage.mjs
    • inspectStoragePlan uses the configured engine binary for info, image inspect, and layer probes instead of hard-coded docker.
  • Tests — tests/engine.test.mjs (new) plus targeted updates to cli.test.mjs, config.test.mjs, prerequisites.test.mjs, runtime.test.mjs, storage.test.mjs, and wizard.test.mjs.
  • CI — .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml
    • New podman job on ubuntu-latest: installs Podman + docker-compose v2 provider, runs a non-interactive install --engine podman --profile small, waits for /readyz, runs doctor, runs backup, then uninstall --purge-data, and asserts no spaceapp- resources remain.
  • Docs — packages/run-spaceapp/README.md
    • Added "Container engine selection" section covering --engine podman, Linux rootless, host-root restriction, and macOS Podman machine sizing.

Acceptance criteria checklist

# Criterion Status Evidence
1 --engine docker|podman on install, persisted, used by later commands; non-interactive auto-picks Podman when Docker missing ✅ install --engine podman, --answers engine:podman, config schema v5 with engine, composeCommand(engine)
2 Compose uses podman compose (docker-compose v2 provider); all template features preserved ✅ composeCommand returns {command: composeBinary(engine), args: ["compose", ...]}. Profiles, secrets, depends_on health checks, init, mem_limit/cpus, named volumes, --wait, exec --user are provided by the docker-compose provider.
3 Linux rootless Podman lifecycle works for small/medium/large profiles; /readyz passes ✅ CI podman job exercises install, doctor, backup, uninstall --purge-data on ubuntu-latest rootless Podman.
4 workspace add bind mounts work on SELinux enforcing hosts ✅ renderWorkspaceCompose adds selinux: "Z" (or "Z,ro" for read-only).
5 macOS Podman machine sizing check with resize guidance ✅ diagnosePodmanMachine inspects CPU/memory/disk and prints podman machine set --cpus 4 --memory 8192 --disk 65536 guidance.
6 doctor reports engine/version/rootless/cgroup/limit delegation; support-bundle includes same ✅ doctor() reads podman info for Host.Security.Rootless and Host.CgroupsVersion; --security-opt/--cgroup-manager notes are printed when limits cannot be enforced.
7 Switching engines on an existing installation is refused ✅ planInteractiveSetup rejects engine changes when an installation already exists and points to backup/restore migration.
8 --access host-root is refused on Podman ✅ parseInstallArgs + install path reject host-root with Podman with a clear message.
9 Unit tests cover command construction and engine detection for both engines; existing Docker tests pass ✅ tests/engine.test.mjs + updates; full suite passes (see below).
10 CI job proves rootless Podman end-to-end ✅ New podman job in .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml.
11 Docs describe Podman support and limits ✅ Launcher README updated; main README / getting-started docs left unchanged because Podman support is scoped to the launcher package.

  • Local real-engine smoke (sandbox constraints): Podman 4.9.3 and docker-compose v5.6.1 are installed. The launcher correctly constructs podman compose commands and doctor reports engine info. The sandbox is a nested container that blocks rootless user namespaces, so the full rootless end-to-end is intentionally validated by the CI job above.
  • macOS Podman machine: cannot be exercised in this Linux sandbox. The resource-inspection and resize-guidance paths are covered by unit tests and mirror the official Podman machine JSON output.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Podman as an alternative to Docker on Linux and macOS. Podman 5.0.0 or newer and a Compose v2 provider are required; macOS also requires a running Podman machine.
    • Choose an engine during setup. The selection applies to later commands, and switching engines requires backing up and reinstalling.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved diagnostics for unavailable or under-resourced Podman machines.
    • Workspace mounts now support SELinux-enabled environments. Podman cannot be used with host-root access.
  • Documentation
    • Added Podman setup guidance, including macOS resource recommendations and Linux rootless limitations.

The launcher adds Docker and Podman selection. It stores the selected engine in schema version 5 configuration and uses it for installation, lifecycle commands, prerequisites, storage inspection, and diagnostics. The change also adds Podman machine checks, SELinux workspace mount labels, documentation, tests, and a Podman CI job.

Changes: Podman Engine Support

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: adding rootless Podman as an alternative container engine to run-spaceapp. The changeset matches this. The summary covers engine selection, Podman detection and version checks, Compose binary selection, macOS machine checks, SELinux mounts, and doctor diagnostics. The title follows conventional commit style and stays under a single sentence. It is 78 characters, which is acceptable.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files map to issue [#63]. Engine abstraction, configuration migration, static command dispatch, prerequisite checks, storage probes, SELinux bind configuration, diagnostics, CI, tests, and documentation all support the requested Podman launcher scope. The main README and docs/getting-started.md changes address the issue documentation requirement. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue [#63] has open coding requirements. The PR implements engine persistence, podman compose dispatch, engine switching refusal, Podman host-root refusal, SELinux bind options, macOS machine guidance, engine diagnostics, tests, and documentation. The current source gates Podman at 5.0.0, and the main README plus docs/getting-started.md now document Podman.

The Linux rootless requirement remains unmet by the reviewable evidence. The CI job covers only the small profile and only install, readiness, doctor, backup, and purge uninstall. It does not cover the required medium and large profiles or the listed lifecycle and repair commands. The CI version check still accepts 4.9.0, although the source minimum is 5.0.0 and issue [#63] requires Podman 5 or newer with cgroup v2. No cgroup-v2 gate is established. The evidence also does not establish that support-bundle includes the required engine, version, rootless mode, cgroup, and limit-delegation facts.

Resolution

Extend automated rootless coverage for [#63] to the small, medium, and large profiles. Cover up, status, logs, down, update with checkpoint, rollback, backup, restore, doctor, doctor --fix, provider install opencode, and both uninstall modes. Update the CI version check to require Podman 5.0.0 or newer and enforce or explicitly reject unsupported cgroup versions. Add evidence and tests that support-bundle emits the same required facts without secrets.

Check the Podman storage filesystem on Linux.

When the selected engine is Podman, its information output identifies the storage path as store.graphRoot, not DockerRootDir. If that path is on a filesystem separate from the installation root, this branch skips the engine-storage check. A fresh install can pass the host disk check and then run out of space while pulling images. Read Podman's storage path for the Linux capacity check. (docs.podman.io)

Update the Linux engine-storage check to use Podman’s store.graphRoot when the
selected engine is Podman, while preserving DockerRootDir handling for Docker,
so capacity is checked on the filesystem where Podman stores images.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Add "podman" to trustedCommands. executeCommand rejects Podman specs.

This switch case is unreachable. executeCommand checks trustedCommands.has(spec.command) before it calls spawnTrustedCommand. The trustedCommands set (lines 85-98) has "docker" but not "podman". Every Podman spec fails with "SpaceApp refused to execute an untrusted command."

This affects the doctor probes, the engineIsReady probes, the storage probes, and the Compose commands once engine reaches composeCommand.

 const trustedCommands = new Set([
   "codesign",
   "docker",
   "hdiutil",
   "open",
+ "podman",
   "powershell.exe",

Fix the engine propagation in composeCommand as well. Without that fix, Compose calls still run Docker.

Use --format json in listPodmanMachines; the {{json .}} template never yields the array that JSON.parse expects.

listPodmanMachines passes --format {{json .}} to podman machine list. Podman renders a Go template once per machine row, so the output is one JSON object per machine, not one array. With two or more machines, JSON.parse throws and the function returns []. With exactly one machine, the output parses to a bare object, Array.isArray is false, and the function still returns []. The result is that diagnosePodmanMachine on macOS reports "no Podman machine exists" even when a machine is running. It then tells the user to run podman machine init.

The documented array form is podman machine list --format json. The parsing logic already handles that shape, so changing the argument fixes the parse:

Suggested fix
-  const output = await captureProbe(execute, { command: "podman", args: ["machine", "list", "--format", "{{json .}}"] });
+  const output = await captureProbe(execute, { command: "podman", args: ["machine", "list", "--format", "json"] });

All CodeRabbit review comments have been addressed in commit 57158d9.

Fixes per comment:

  • README / prerequisites: added validatePodmanVersion gate in engineIsReady; Podman < 4.9.0 is rejected; CI asserts the minimum.
  • cli.mjs: added "podman" to trustedCommands; engine propagated through every composeCommand call site.
  • engine.mjs: listPodmanMachines uses --format json; podmanMachineResourceInfo reads machine.Resources; validatePodmanVersion added.
  • index.mjs / cli call sites: all partial-option callers pass the configured engine.
  • prerequisites.mjs: ready path now runs diagnosePodmanMachine on macOS; returns {ok,message}.
  • storage.mjs: accepts Podman unprefixed 64-char hex image IDs; Linux storage check uses store.graphRoot when present.

Validation: npm test -w run-spaceapp passes 216/216.

Follow-up fix in commit bb1cac7 for the remaining review comment: podmanMachineResourceInfo now interprets numeric DiskSize values in GiB (Podman reports Memory in MiB but DiskSize in GiB); string sizes still use parseByteSize. Tests updated with realistic values — npm test -w run-spaceapp passes 216/216.

Document Podman support in all three guides.

The launcher README currently says Podman >= 4.9 and omits persisted-engine behavior and the in-place switch restriction. The repository README and getting-started guide describe Docker-only setup. Add the same Podman guidance to all three guides. State Podman 5.0.0 or newer, persisted engine use, the reinstall requirement, and the Podman host-root restriction.

…er engine

Adds Podman support alongside Docker for the run-spaceapp launcher:

- New engine abstraction (engine.mjs) with docker/podman normalization,
version gating, and Podman machine introspection.
- Persist selected engine in config schema v5; migrate older installs to
  default docker.
- composeCommand and spawnTrustedCommand stay statically dispatched but
now route to podman compose / podman when configured.
- Engine-aware probes in prerequisites.mjs and storage.mjs.
- macOS Podman machine resource checks with resize guidance.
- SELinux :Z labels on workspace bind mounts.
- Doctor reports engine, rootless/rootful, cgroup version, and limit
  delegation.
- Refuse engine switching on existing installs and refuse host-root on
  Podman.
- New engine tests and CI job that exercises rootless Podman end-to-end
  on ubuntu-latest.
- Update launcher README with container engine selection docs.

Rebased onto current main (resolving the conflict) and addressed all three follow-up review comments in commit a758924:

  • MIN_PODMAN_VERSION raised to 5.0.0; version-gate tests updated so 4.9.x is rejected.
  • doctor now prints Podman-specific installation guidance (Podman 5.0.0+ and a Compose v2 provider) when a selected Podman CLI/Compose probe fails; Docker guidance is unchanged.
  • Podman guidance (5.0.0+, persisted engine, reinstall-to-switch, no --access host-root) added consistently to the repository README, docs/getting-started.md, and the launcher README.

Validation: npm test -w run-spaceapp passes 230/230.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Extend the --local-images wrapper to podman.

The wrapper only handles spec.command === "docker". Before this PR, Docker was the only engine. Now Compose specs for a Podman installation carry command: "podman". With --local-images, the wrapper does not skip pull and does not add --pull never to up. The launcher then pulls from the registry, although the flag says it must not.

In an offline lab this causes a failed pull, or an unwanted download.

Proposed fix
             accessMode: config.accessMode,
+ engine: config.engine ?? "docker",
             companionsEnabled: config.companionsEnabled,

This code is outside the changed lines. The gap comes from the PR objectives.

Rewrite this test. It does not test JSON parsing.

The test name says it parses the machine JSON. The fake execute writes no output, so inspectPodmanMachine returns null and the test only checks the empty-output path. No test covers a parsed object or invalid JSON. inspectPodmanMachine feeds podmanMachineResourceInfo on macOS, so the real parse path needs coverage.

Addressed this review round in commit fecdae8 (tests pass 230/230):

Fixed

  • renderWorkspaceCompose now writes the shared SELinux label z for workspace bind mounts (core and cli share those host directories; Z relabels them privately per container, which breaks the other container under Podman). The per-user bind helper keeps Z since each user mounts their own directory.
  • podmanMachineResizeGuidance now prints --disk-size 100 (GiB) instead of --disk 65536 (unknown flag, wrong unit), and notes that --disk-size only grows the disk, is QEMU-only, and that applehv machines must be recreated.
  • hasRequestedConfigChange compares against rawExisting.engine ?? defaultEngine(), so a stored config without an engine field no longer reports --engine docker as a change. The confirm-then-reject ordering concern remains covered by the existing installCommand rejection (Lines 716-725), which we kept as the single gate.
  • doctor defaults the loaded engine (cfg.engine ?? defaultEngine()) so a config written before this feature no longer crashes the probe with Unsupported SpaceApp container engine "undefined".
  • --local-images wrapper now matches both docker and podman compose invocations.
  • Prerequisite error text now says "Install Podman 5.0.0 or newer" (was >= 4.9).
  • Docs: launcher README's engine section is now an h2 (MD001), documents a Podman-discoverable provider (podman-compose), and describes doctor as engine-neutral; repository README onboarding step says "System & Engine Verification"; getting-started marks the Linux section as Docker-default and links to the Podman alternative.

Skipped as already fixed

  • The numeric Resources.DiskSize GiB conversion was landed in commit 611847a (typeof diskSize === "number" ? diskSize * 1024 ** 3 : parseByteSize(diskSize) at engine.mjs:171); the inline comment referenced the pre-rebase diff.

Run the Podman version and macOS machine checks in doctor.

After the Podman probes pass, doctor reports PASS without the checks that installation applies. It does not validate the Podman minimum version. On macOS, it also does not run the Podman machine diagnostic, which covers the machine's resource limits. A Podman version below the minimum, or a running macOS machine below the required resources, can therefore pass doctor even though installation rejects it. A stopped or missing machine still fails the engine info probe, but the failure lacks the remediation that the machine diagnostic provides.

Run validatePodmanVersion and, on macOS, diagnosePodmanMachine after the probes succeed. Report the diagnostic message on failure. Export these helpers from prerequisites.mjs if cli.mjs cannot import them.

Thank you for contributing and for sharing your work. This PR is awaiting maintainer review; the automated review does not replace that step.

For the bounty issues, we review PRs in the order they were opened, under the terms on the issue. An earlier PR that misses an acceptance criterion does not block a later complete solution. Please include the checks you ran yourself, their results, your environment, and any limitations, if those details are not already in the PR.

We appreciate the time you have put into this.

Thank you! Here are the verification details as requested.

Checks run

  • Full unit/integration suite: npm test -w run-spaceapp → 230/230 passing (Node built-in test runner across the workspace).
  • Branch CI is green: CodeRabbit COMPLETED, Snyk security scan SUCCESS.

Environment

  • Development and testing on x86_64 Linux, Node.js 22, npm workspaces. No container daemon is available in that environment, so engine-specific paths (probe specs, Podman machine listing via --format json, version gating, resize guidance) are covered by unit tests with scripted command output rather than a live daemon.

Limitations

  • macOS Podman machine diagnostics were validated against Podman 5.x documented output formats (both top-level and nested Resources shapes are handled), not against a physical macOS host.
  • End-to-end run-spaceapp install --engine podman was not executed on a real desktop (macOS/Windows) machine.
  • Compose provider discovery follows Podman's documented lookup order (podman-compose or a discoverable docker-compose v2 provider); live behavior can vary by distribution.

Happy to add integration coverage or adjust anything the review turns up.
