run-spaceapp: rootless Podman engine support (--engine podman) (#63) - #261
Implements #63: the run-spaceapp launcher can run the unchanged SpaceApp stack on rootless
Podman, selected per installation.
Engine selection.install --engine docker|podman (also "engine" in --answers); the
choice is stored in the configuration and used by every later command (up/down/status/logs,
update, rollback, backup, restore, doctor, doctor --fix, repair, provider install, workspace
and credentials sync, uninstall). No flag keeps Docker when Docker works; when Docker is
absent but a supported Podman is ready, install picks Podman and says so. Switching engines
on an existing installation is refused with the reason (volumes are engine-private) and the
supported migration: backup → uninstall --purge-data → install --engine podman → restore.
Podman support specifics.
Provider/versions: podman compose with the Docker Compose v2 provider; Podman >= 5
on cgroup v2. podman-compose is rejected with an explanation. The template is unchanged, so
profiles, file secrets, depends_on health conditions (including required: false), init,
mem_limit/cpus, shared named socket volumes, --wait, and --user 10001:10001 exec/run all
keep their semantics.
Prerequisites are checked, never installed: missing/old Podman, a missing compose
provider, or an unreachable engine (rootless socket / macOS machine) each stop the install
with the exact fix. Rootless installs need systemctl --user enable --now podman.socket.
No userns_mode: keep-id: the published images start as root and drop to 10001:10001, and
keep-id crash-loops them (as documented in earlier acceptance runs on this issue). The
default subordinate mapping is used; backup/restore one-off containers run as 0:0.
Workspace bind mounts render bind: { selinux: "z" } under Podman only (SELinux-enforcing
hosts, host ownership preserved, read-only stays read-only); Docker rendering is unchanged.
--access host-root is refused on Podman (install-time and config validation); Podman on
Windows is refused with a pointer to the Docker engine.
Doctor / support bundle. Doctor reports the engine, version, rootless/rootful state,
cgroup version, and cgroup limit delegation; undelegated cpu/memory is called out plainly at
doctor time (warning, not a late failure). On macOS it sizes the Podman machine against the
profile and prints the podman machine set resize command. The support bundle carries the
same engine facts and no secrets.
Tests. New tests/podman.test.mjs (16 tests: selection/persistence, version floor,
info/machine/cgroup fixtures, compose construction for both engines, SELinux rendering,
prerequisite gates, doctor, storage probing incl. Podman's bare-hex image ids, a full mocked
podman install + status, switch refusal, host-root refusal, support bundle). Full suite:
209/209 passing; npm run check clean.
CI. New podman-linux job: installs Podman 5 on ubuntu-latest, wires the Compose v2
provider, prepares rootless (subuid + API socket), installs the small profile with --engine podman --non-interactive, waits for http://127.0.0.1:4911/readyz, backs up,
uninstalls with --purge-data, and asserts no containers remain. Its log is the real-host
run for this change (developed in an environment without a Podman binary; the mocked
end-to-end test covers the launcher flow, this job covers the real engine).
Docs. Launcher README ("Container engines: Docker or rootless Podman"), root README
prerequisites, and docs/getting-started.md all document requirements and limits.
Out of scope per the issue: Windows Podman, installing Podman itself, Quadlet/Kubernetes,
image changes, other engines.

Engine helpers parse Podman and machine facts, check platform requirements, and provide engine-switch guidance. Configuration validates the selected engine and access mode. Prerequisite checks verify Podman, its Compose provider, and engine availability.
Engine selection during installation packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs
Install accepts an explicit engine and checks whether Podman is ready. A fresh install can select Podman when Docker is unavailable and Podman probes succeed. Existing installations retain their engine, and engine switching is refused.
Runtime, maintenance, backup and restore, workspace, and user operations use the configured engine. Podman workspace mounts add SELinux relabeling. Storage inspection probes the selected engine and reports its name.

Read the Podman machine sizing from Resources.
podman machine inspect nests the sizing under Resources: Resources.CPUs, Resources.Memory (MiB), and Resources.DiskSize (GiB). Only Name and State are top-level. See the upstream podman machine inspect example output.
This code reads machine.CPUs, machine.Memory, and machine.DiskSize. On a real machine, cpus, memoryBytes, and diskBytes therefore all become null. podmanMachineCheck skips every comparison. The macOS "Podman machine" doctor check then always passes, with "? CPUs" in the detail. The check never warns about an undersized machine.
tests/podman.test.mjs lines 228 and 234 use the same wrong top-level shape. The tests pass but do not match real output. Change those fixtures to the nested Resources shape as well.

Preserve the spawn error for Podman probes.
executeCommand resolves 127 for ENOENT, so versionProbe.error?.code === "ENOENT" is unreachable when ensurePodmanAvailable uses the normal executor. A real Podman process can also exit with 127.
Add a probe-only option that preserves spawn errors. Keep the default executor behavior unchanged. Classify ENOENT as missing Podman, EACCES or EPERM as launch failures, and an error-free exit code 127 as a real process exit.

## NAME
podman\-compose - Run Compose workloads via an external compose provider
## SYNOPSIS
**podman compose** [*options*] [*command* [*arg* ...]]
## DESCRIPTION
**podman compose** is a thin wrapper around an external compose provider such as docker-compose or podman-compose. This means that `podman compose` is executing another tool that implements the compose functionality but sets up the environment in a way to let the compose provider communicate transparently with the local Podman socket. The specified options as well as the command and argument are passed directly to the compose provider.
The default compose providers are `docker-compose` and `podman-compose`. If installed, `docker-compose` takes precedence since it is the original implementation of the Compose specification and is widely used on the supported platforms (i.e., Linux, Mac OS, Windows).
If you want to change the default behavior or have a custom installation path for your provider of choice, please change the `compose_providers` field in the `[engine]` table of `containers.conf(5)` to `compose_providers = ["/path/to/provider"]`. You may also set the `PODMAN_COMPOSE_PROVIDER` environment variable.
By default, `podman compose` will emit a warning saying that it executes an external command. This warning can be disabled by setting `compose_warning_logs` to false in the `[engine]` table of `containers.conf(5)` or setting the `PODMAN_COMPOSE_WARNING_LOGS` environment variable to false. See the man page for `containers.conf(5)` for more information.
## OPTIONS
To see supported options of the installed compose provider, please run `podman compose --help`.

# Extensions.md
# Podman specific extensions to the docker-compose format
Podman-compose supports the following extensions to the docker-compose format. These extensions are generally specified under fields with "x-podman" prefix in the compose file.
## Container management
The following extension keys are available under container configuration:
* `x-podman.uidmaps` - Run the container in a new user namespace using the supplied UID mapping.
* `x-podman.gidmaps` - Run the container in a new user namespace using the supplied GID mapping.
* `x-podman.rootfs` - Run the container without requiring any image management; the rootfs of the container is assumed to be managed externally.
* `x-podman.no_hosts` - Run the container without creating /etc/hosts file
* `x-podman.passwd` - Allow Podman to add entries to /etc/passwd and /etc/group when used in conjunction with the --user option. Defaults to true.
For example, the following docker-compose.yml allows running a podman container with externally managed rootfs.

Require Docker Compose v2, not only a successful provider command.
podman compose can delegate to podman-compose when the host selects that provider. The prerequisite discards the version output and accepts any zero exit code, so installation can continue with an unsupported provider. Reject successful probes unless the output identifies Docker Compose v2.

Make the engine migration sequence executable.
After uninstall --purge-data, the launcher retains config.json. The next install --engine ${requestedEngine} therefore sees the existing engine and refuses the switch at packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs Lines 699-703. The user has already removed the old engine’s volumes at that point. Provide a migration step that safely clears or replaces the saved engine choice while preserving the backup, or change the install flow to recognize a completed purge.

Include automation answers in the same-version engine-change check.
If an existing installation receives a different "engine" through --answers without --engine, requestedEngine contains that choice. The same-version branch nevertheless calls hasRequestedConfigChange(rawExisting, parsed), which sees no engine change and starts repair instead of reaching engineSwitchRefusal. Pass the resolved requestedEngine to that check so an automation request receives the same refusal as a command-line request.

Apply full Podman eligibility checks before automatic selection.
When Docker CLI is absent, a successful podman info probe can select rootful Podman even though SpaceApp requires rootless Podman. The same exit-only check can accept the unsupported podman-compose provider. The code then sets result.config.engine to podman and calls ensurePodman, which rejects the installation. Because a prerequisite result already exists, the installer does not call ensureDocker.
Run the provider and rootless checks before assigning engine or result.config.engine. If Podman fails either check, leave Podman unselected and continue through the Docker fallback.

update to go1.26.10
These releases include 1 security fix following the security policy:
* crypto/x509: mitigation for security concerns with a specific Certificate Authority
We're blocking trust in a small set of intermediate certificates due to specific security concerns around their operation.
Verify will now filter out chains which contain these intermediates, preventing them from being returned to the caller.
We highly recommend immediately upgrading to this release.

Accept Docker Compose v5 in the Podman prerequisite check.
ensurePodmanAvailable accepts only Docker Compose version v?2.x.y. Docker Compose v5 therefore fails the Podman prerequisite check, including output without the v prefix. The tests cover only v2.39.1.
Accept Compose major version 2 or later and add v5 tests. Keep rejecting podman-compose.

Follow-up addressing the CodeRabbit review — thank you for the careful pass. Six of the seven findings were valid and are fixed in the latest commits:
Podman machine sizing:podmanMachineFacts read CPUs/memory/disk from top-level fields, but podman machine inspect nests them under Resources, so the values came back null and the macOS sizing check always passed. Now reads Resources first with a top-level fallback.
Compose gate: the doctor accepted any zero exit from podman compose version, so an unsupported podman-compose could pass. It now requires the output to match Docker Compose v2.
Auto-pick probe: engine auto-pick probed docker info, which fails when the daemon is stopped and silently switched the engine. It now probes docker --version (presence only) and is skipped on win32.
Switch refusal message:engineSwitchRefusal named the wrong engine when refusing a podman→docker switch; it now names the requested engine.
Rootless requirement: rootful Podman was accepted; rootless is now required, failing closed when rootless cannot be determined.
Cleanup: five duplicate engine keys in cli.mjs were collapsed.
One finding I could not act on as stated: the note about a missing versionProbe.error check in prerequisites.mjs — there is no such check in the code, and a missing binary is already handled by the existing probe path. Happy to revisit if I misread it.
Verification on my side: npm run check passes and the full suite passes (210/210 at the fix commit; 224/224 after merging current main).
Also note: I merged the latest main (1.1.8) into this branch to clear the conflicts that appeared when main moved — the cli.mjs restore flow keeps the engine argument threaded through the new 1.1.8 restore-restart path, and index.mjs keeps both the new image-attestation imports and the engine imports. The branch is conflict-free again.

Refuse an engine switch inside planInteractiveSetup, before the wizard asks for approval.
hasRequestedConfigChange returns true when --engine differs from the stored engine. Install then goes to the "Apply this plan?" confirmation. The refusal in installCommand (lines 723-728) only runs afterwards. The user approves a plan that is always refused. applyApprovedConfigRepairs can also rewrite config.json before the refusal.
Check the switch right after rawExisting is read (line 1161):

doctor reports a rootful Podman engine as PASS, but install rejects it.
The "Podman runtime" check is hard-coded to ok: true. ensurePodmanAvailable fails closed when facts.rootless is not true. A rootful engine, such as a rootful macOS machine or a root-run Linux socket, passes spaceapp doctor. The same engine is refused at install and update. The rootless === null (unknown) case has the same mismatch.

Reject cgroup v1 hosts in ensurePodmanAvailable, as the documented requirement states.
The documented prerequisite is Podman 5 on cgroup v2. ensurePodmanAvailable checks the rootless state but not the cgroup version, so a rootless Podman host on cgroup v1 passes the gate and install continues. The launcher then runs the profile without enforced mem_limit/cpus limits. Doctor reports this state as a warning only.
Add a cgroup v2 check after the rootless check, so the installer fails closed as it does for rootless state:

Follow-up to the latest CodeRabbit review: fixed. The compose gate pinned Docker Compose v2, which rejects v5. It now accepts major version 2 or later (with or without the v prefix), still rejects v1 and the Python podman-compose provider, and has tests for v5 (v5.6.1 and 5.0.0) plus a v1 rejection case. Verified locally: check passes, full suite 224/224, and reverting the gate to v2-only fails the new tests.

Implements #63: the run-spaceapp launcher can run the unchanged SpaceApp stack on rootless
Podman, selected per installation.
Engine selection.
install --engine docker|podman(also"engine"in--answers); thechoice is stored in the configuration and used by every later command (up/down/status/logs,
update, rollback, backup, restore, doctor, doctor --fix, repair, provider install, workspace
and credentials sync, uninstall).
Podman support specifics.

provider, or an unreachable engine (rootless socket / macOS machine) each stop the install
with the exact fix. Rootless installs need
systemctl --user enable --now podman.socket.userns_mode: keep-id: the published images start as root and drop to 10001:10001, andkeep-id crash-loops them (as documented in earlier acceptance runs on this issue). The
default subordinate mapping is used; backup/restore one-off containers run as
0:0.bind: { selinux: "z" }under Podman only (SELinux-enforcinghosts, host ownership preserved, read-only stays read-only); Docker rendering is unchanged.
--access host-rootis refused on Podman (install-time and config validation); Podman onWindows is refused with a pointer to the Docker engine.
Doctor / support bundle. Doctor reports the engine, version, rootless/rootful state,
cgroup version, and cgroup limit delegation; undelegated cpu/memory is called out plainly at
doctor time (warning, not a late failure). On macOS it sizes the Podman machine against the
profile and prints the
podman machine setresize command. The support bundle carries thesame engine facts and no secrets.
