feat(project): import GeoLibre projects as maps - #1005
Open a GeoLibre .geolibre or legacy .geolibre.json project as a new map, preserving the current project and its unsaved work. Adds project.importGeolibre with file, URL, JSON text and base64 inputs; desktop Open/Project New/drop routing; and browser project links and asynchronous source loading. Imports supported sources, view, bookmarks, groups, visibility, colour classes and labels, with per-layer notes for differences and skipped content.
Combined classified colour and proportional size is tracked separately in #1017. This importer retains classified colour and reports fixed size for combined styles. Single-style proportional symbols remain supported. Browser imports refuse batches that exceed the available 16 whole-file download slots before creating a map; streaming tiles/COGs use no slots. The renderer extension and saved-project representation will be designed in that follow-up; this PR adds no renderer/schema fields or dependencies.
Testing
Before: RustGIS could not open GeoLibre projects; after: hand-authored parser/source/style fixtures, hostile command parameters and real app-frame picker/drop tests cover the new entry points.
Final tree, including integration with upstream main at 58e0d34: cargo xtask ci passed (fmt, workspace Clippy with -D warnings, workspace tests and layers), cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passed, and pre-commit run --all-files passed. Both app-frame Zarr regressions passed in a focused run as well. Subsequent regressions cover serialized/budgeted Zarr reads, saved native slice indices and 1,000-group ancestry. Further tests cover consecutive-import admission, extensionless COGs, native plain-TIFF fallback opacity and engine/assistant callback guards.
Review fixes: Zarr completion regression now advances the app frame; rejecting a seventeenth concurrent browser Zarr store removes its reserved layer and group reference, including after a map switch.
Manually imported GeoLibre's hosted earthquake demo (1,974 earthquakes and 241 plate-boundary features), waited for the basemap, saved .rgis, reopened it and compared screenshots. View and colour class boundaries persist; combined size remains the documented limitation tracked in Support proportional size alongside classified point colours #1017. Screenshots are retained privately, not committed.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Import supported GeoLibre projects as new maps from .geolibre or .geolibre.json files, web links, text, or base64 data.
Restore supported layers, styles, groups, bookmarks, and map settings. Import notes identify content or appearance that could not be fully preserved.
Open GeoLibre projects from the Start page, file picker, Command Search, or supported web links.
Import supported Zarr sources as map layers.
Limitations
Browser imports may be limited when many whole-file downloads are required; oversized batches are refused before a map is created.
Saving and packaging are unavailable while imported layers are downloading; recovery copies omit unfinished layers.
Documentation
Added guidance on importing GeoLibre projects, supported content, and browser download limits.
GeoLibre project files can now be imported as new maps through engine commands and desktop and web entry points. The importer parses project data, applies supported styles and map settings, reports unsupported content, and handles remote layers and Zarr sources.

Summary
Project parsing and style translation crates/map/src/geolibre.rs, crates/map/src/geolibre/style.rs, crates/map/src/lib.rs
The map crate validates GeoLibre JSON, converts camera and layer settings, and applies supported renderers, symbols, and labels. Import reports identify unsupported or approximated settings. Tests cover parsing, limits, ordering, and style behavior.

project.importGeolibre accepts project input, adds a map, imports supported sources, and restores groups, layer order, camera, and bookmarks. It tracks pending remote layers and removes reservations after failures. Saving, packaging, exports, and offline operations check for pending imports. Tests cover input errors, source handling, map state, persistence checks, and approval gating.
Browser layer and Zarr downloads crates/ui-egui/src/geolibreui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs
The UI polls asynchronous GeoLibre Zarr reads and sends completed data to reserved layer positions. Failed reads and downloads discard pending import state. Tests cover completion after map switching, download limits, and cleanup.
The web and desktop interfaces recognize GeoLibre project extensions. The Start page, Command Search, picker, and file-drop paths route to the import flow. Tests cover picker and filename handling. Documentation describes supported inputs, imported content, and limitations.

Bug (medium-high confidence):"json" was added to this Open picker's filter, but only .geolibre/.geolibre.json are routed to the importer. Any other .json the user picks (for example a plain GeoJSON file) falls through to project.open, which fails with a project-parse error. Before this PR a .json could not be picked here.
project::open_command already sends non-project files to layer.addData, so the fallback can reuse it:

Fixed in c49df6e. The desktop picker now uses open_command for its fallback, so plain JSON goes to the data reader; QGIS routing remains explicit. Focused regressions, full workspace CI, wasm build and hooks passed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (low-medium confidence): layers without a groupId are keyed under "" in groups. A group record with no id gives string(g, "id") == "", so groups.remove("") pulls every ungrouped layer into that malformed folder. Skip the empty id:

Fixed in c49df6e. An empty group id no longer collects ungrouped layers. Added a regression with a hidden malformed folder. Focused regressions, full workspace CI, wasm build and hooks passed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (low):finish_layer gives the replacement layer the placeholder's id (loaded.id = target.1), but finish_archive does not. The completed tile keeps a fresh id, so later lookups by the pending token (discard_pending, finish_archive's own position) no longer find it. Mirror the layer path:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The token identifies an unfinished archive reservation. After successful replacement the tile is complete and should no longer match discard_pending or a duplicate completion. Unlike feature layer ids used in folder membership, this transient token need not survive completion; retaining it would let a late failure discard a completed tile.
Desktop Open picker routes any non-GeoLibre .json to project.open, which fails. "json" was added to the filter in crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:2497, but only .geolibre and .geolibre.json are routed to the importer. Suggested fix: reuse project::open_command as the fallback. Inline comment posted. Confidence: medium-high.
A group record with no id adopts every ungrouped layer. Ungrouped layers are keyed under "", and groups.remove("") pulls them into the malformed folder (crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:136). Inline comment posted with a fix. Confidence: low-medium.
Security
Opening a project reads any existing absolute path and any ..-relative path the project names, then loads that data into the map, where it can be saved into .rgis. This follows the QGIS importer's pattern, so it is a design question rather than a regression. Confidence: low-medium.
Internal keys (geolibreProject, geolibreLayer, geolibreZarr) are accepted on public commands (layer.addDownload, ui.addUrl). Those commands can reach the importer without the project.importGeolibre plugin gate. Impact is limited because a download id must already exist. Consider rejecting these keys from external callers. Confidence: low.
Performance
On native builds, project.importGeolibre with a url, and MBTiles layers, call blocking downloads with a 60 s timeout on the thread that runs the command. Desktop callers may stall the UI. Confidence: low.
Quality
finish_archive does not carry the placeholder's token onto the replaced tile, unlike finish_layer. Inline comment posted at crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:437. Confidence: medium.
Test code is not rustfmt-style (for example let text=json!( at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:17979). If CI runs cargo fmt --check, this will fail. Confidence: medium.
add_layer is about 150 lines with a six-step fallback chain for the address. A helper would make it easier to read.
The basemap sets visibility on tiles.last_mut() rather than the index the command returns. It works only because the map is fresh.
download_url and is_project_file have no direct unit tests, and the finish_archive path is untested.
AGENTS.md
Compliant on panics and unwrap, unsafe, layering, wasm gating, the plugin NEVER list, and tl! in UI strings. No new dependencies.
apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs adds an untranslated filter label. The old label was also untranslated, so this is a nit.

Performance (confidence: medium, severity: low).s.project.clone() runs once per layer, so a project with N layers clones every map and layer N times. Features are Arc-shared, so the cost is shallow, but it still grows as O(N × model size). Snapshotting once before the loop, or rolling back only the ids added by the failing layer, avoids the repeated clone.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Keeping the per-layer snapshot for transactional rollback. The parser caps imports at 1,000 layers and Dataset features are Arc-shared. A single pre-loop snapshot would discard earlier successful imports on a later failure; rolling back only new ids would miss mutations to other project state. This low-severity optimization does not justify weakening rollback here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (confidence: medium). When add_named_bytes has already added layers and this check fails, the error returns without removing them. discard_pending only removes layers whose source is the reservation token, so the extra layers stay in the target map. This is reachable when a multi-layer URL source is downloaded. Record the pre-existing ids and remove any new layers before returning the error, as the import_project error path already does with s.project = before.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The public layer.addDownload command is mutating and executes through Session::guarded, which snapshots the Project and restores it on Err. The multi-layer check therefore rolls back the added layers before UI discard_pending removes the reservation. The helper itself is not the transaction boundary.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (confidence: high, impact low).split(['?', '#']) is meant for URLs, but open_command calls this function with local paths. A file such as plan#2.geolibre is cut to plan and is not recognised, so the CLI and drag-and-drop route it to layer.addData. Callers already strip the query (project_file_name), and ui.openUrl passes full URLs that would need it. Move the stripping to those URL callers and keep this check a plain suffix test:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in c49df6e. Query/fragment stripping now applies only to web URLs. Local names containing # or ? retain their suffix; unit and drop-path regressions cover both. Focused regressions, full workspace CI, wasm build and hooks passed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Security (confidence: medium, depends on threat model).resolve reads whatever a project names. An absolute sourcePath that exists is used directly, and a relative one is joined onto dir without checking for ... A shared .geolibre from a URL can therefore pull in local CSV, GeoJSON or other data (for example ../../secret.csv) into the attribute table and notes. Consider rejecting .. components in relative paths, and listing the resolved path in the import notes so the user can see what was read. Absolute paths may be an intentional move-friendly fallback, so that is a design call.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Retaining the explicit sourcePath contract from #962: existing absolute paths are read, with moved-file fallback under dir. This is a user-only file/network import, gated for assistant execution and excluded from plugins, consistent with QGIS import. Importing intentionally reads referenced datasets; it does not send their contents to a remote service. Folder confinement would change that contract, so no new confinement policy is introduced here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (confidence: medium). The picker now lists json, so a plain .json file (for example GeoJSON) falls into this else and runs project.open, which fails with an unhelpful error. .json is not a RustGIS project extension, so route it to project.importGeolibre. That gives a clear "not a GeoLibre project" error for other JSON files:

finish_layer leaves stray layers in the target map when add_named_bytes added layers but the ids.len() != 1 check fails. Only the placeholder is discarded. Confidence: medium. Inline (crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:380).
The browser ?project=/.json picker routing: a plain .json from the picker goes to project.open, which fails with an unhelpful error. Confidence: medium. Inline (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:2523).
is_project_file strips ? and # from local paths, so plan#2.geolibre is not recognised by the CLI or drag-and-drop. Confidence: high, impact low. Inline (crates/map/src/geolibre.rs:150).
Security
resolve reads whatever the project names: absolute paths that exist are used directly, and relative paths are joined onto dir without rejecting ... A shared project can pull local CSV or GeoJSON into the attribute table and notes. Confidence: medium, depends on threat model. Inline (crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:344).
No leaked secrets or unsafe input handling found. Reads are capped at 64 MiB, and download_blocking is size-capped.
Performance
s.project.clone() runs once per layer, so cost grows with layers × model size. Features are Arc-shared, so the impact is modest. Confidence: medium, severity low. Inline (crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:114).
Quality
Nit: the layer address fallback chain in add_layer (geolibre.rs around lines 237–246) repeats the same tiles/url/data lookups three times. A small helper would read better.
Nit: layers.sort_by_key with position is O(n²) over up to 1000 layers. This is negligible here.
Nit: the geolibre_moved_local_source_uses_project_directory test deletes its temp directory only on success, so a failed assertion leaks it.
Nit: the backstage.rscard() change to ui.is_enabled() is a drive-by accessibility change that the PR description does not mention.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap/expect/unsafe in non-test code. Crate-level deny and the plugin NEVER list are respected.
project.importGeolibre is gated for the assistant and excluded from plugins.
The wasm std::time and web_time usage is correct.
Confirmed by reading: download_blocking is capped at MAX_DOWNLOAD, and the web ?project= link receives the rewritten .geolibre.json URL, so it resolves correctly.
I did not build or run the tests. I reviewed by reading only.

GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
Please review this draft explicitly; automatic review was skipped because it is a draft. The current head includes the Zarr app-frame completion and failed-reservation cleanup fixes, integration with main, and passing CI/wasm/hooks.
The draft remains pending a maintainer scope decision: whether to extend classified renderers with an independent optional size mapping here or separately. Combined classified colour and proportional size is explicitly unfinished; the proposed extension is described in the PR body and has not been implemented.
This paragraph still says "Neither opens the other's project file yet" and calls .geolibre support a plan. The FAQ at Lines 205-209 now says RustGIS imports .geolibre projects, so the page contradicts itself. Rewrite the paragraph: RustGIS imports GeoLibre projects as maps, and GeoLibre opening .rgis projects comes later.

Bug (medium confidence): transparency is applied twice when a stop has no usable colour.symbol.fill already has fillOpacity in its alpha. When the stop's colour is missing or not hex (for example rgb(...)), color() returns that already-faded fill as the default, and painted() multiplies its alpha by the fill alpha again. With fillOpacity 0.6 (alpha 153), the class ends up at 153·153/255 ≈ 91. Same issue on line 69 for graduated. Fix: use an opaque default so painted() applies the fill opacity once.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in c49df6e. Class colours now use the original unscaled fill as fallback and apply fillOpacity exactly once. Regressions cover categorized/graduated classes with missing, unsupported and translucent colours. Focused regressions, full workspace CI, wasm build and hooks passed.

Bug (medium-high confidence): a plain .json chosen in this picker is sent to project.open. The json filter was added at line 2513, but the routing only maps .geolibre/.geolibre.json to the importer. Any other .json, including a non-GeoLibre file or a .json GeoLibre export, falls through to project.open and fails with a RustGIS-project error. Fix: route any .json here to project.importGeolibre, so the importer reports a clear "requires name, version and mapView" error.

Bug (medium confidence): local paths containing ? or # are misrouted.open_command calls this function on local file paths, but it splits on ?/# as if they were URL query markers. plan#2.geolibre becomes plan and goes to layer.addData. Security (medium-low confidence; the user opens the file, but the project chooses the path). A project can name any absolute path that exists, or a .. relative path, and the importer reads it into a layer. The attribute table then shows the contents, and a remote source is fetched automatically when the project opens. The import is user-initiated, so this is more an information-exposure and privacy concern than code execution. Consider confining relative paths to the project folder (reject .. components) and calling out, in the import notes, absolute paths and remote hosts the project names.
Learn more.
Bug (high confidence): zoom limits are inverted.Layer::min_scale is the "out beyond" limit (layer.scaleRange docs: "min": scale (out beyond)), and sharing.rs::zoom_range maps it to minzoom. Here maxZoom goes to min_scale and minZoom goes to max_scale, so a layer with minZoom: 10 disappears when zoomed in past 10 and a maxZoom: 14 layer is only drawn when zoomed in past 14. No test covers the mapping, which is why this passed.

The same swap is on the label lines (135–136). A regression test should check that minZoom: 10 yields min_scale == scale(10).

Fixed in c49df6e. minZoom now maps to min_scale and maxZoom to max_scale for layers and labels. A regression checks zooms 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 against the 3–10 interval. Focused regressions, full workspace CI, wasm build and hooks passed.

Bug (medium-high confidence): COG and TIFF raster layers in a folder get the folder's opacity and visibility twice. The tile predicate also matches cog/raster TIFF URLs, which are ordinary raster layers, not tile overlays. The code bakes own × group opacity into the record here, and LayerGroup transparency is then applied again at render time (map/src/lib.rs:840 says group opacity applies "on top of each child's own"). A 50% folder over a 100% COG therefore draws at 25%. Only real tile kinds (which can't join a folder) should bake. Feature and raster layers should keep their own values and let the folder apply.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Remote COG/TIFF sources are tile-stack entries here: layer::add_cog calls tiles::add and returns an index; the importer handles that as Ok(None), so it does not add a feature-layer id to the folder. Folder settings are baked once because tile entries cannot belong to LayerGroup. Local raster feature layers instead use their own settings and folder opacity. Removing this predicate would lose remote COG folder settings.
Six inline comments are posted. The most serious is that the zoom limits are inverted.
Bugs
Zoom limits inverted (high confidence).style.rs:13-14 and :135-136 map maxZoom to min_scale and minZoom to max_scale. In RustGIS min_scale is the "out beyond" limit, which zoom_range maps to minzoom. Layers and labels disappear at the wrong zooms, and no test covers the mapping.
COG and TIFF layers in folders get opacity applied twice (medium-high).cmd/geolibre.rs:106-109 bakes folder opacity into raster layers that are not tiles. The folder's transparency is then applied again at render time, so a 50% folder over a 100% COG draws at 25%.
Plain .json opened from the desktop picker goes to project.open (medium-high).ui-egui/src/lib.rs:2523. The json filter was added, but only .geolibre and .geolibre.json are routed to the importer.
Alpha squared for stops with no usable colour (medium).style.rs:44 (and :69 for graduated). When a stop's colour is missing or not hex, painted() applies the fill opacity a second time (for example, 153 becomes 91).
Local paths with ? or # are misrouted (medium).map/src/geolibre.rs:148. is_project_file strips query text from local file names, so plan#2.geolibre goes to layer.addData.
Security
Project-named paths are read and remote sources are fetched on open (medium-low).engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:338. Absolute and .. paths that exist are read into layers. The user opens the file, so this is mainly an exposure and privacy concern. Consider confining relative paths to the project folder and noting absolute paths and remote hosts in the import notes.
Internal keys bypass the plugin gate (low confidence, not commented).geolibreProject and geolibreLayer are accepted by layer.addDownload, which is not on the NEVER list. A plugin that obtained a download id could import a project through it.
Performance
None significant. Project::clone per layer is cheap because features are copy-on-write.
Quality
The address fallback chain in add_layer reassigns address five times, and two of the fallbacks are redundant.
The card doc comment lost its description, and card is now used for non-project cards too.
Nit: the web picker label "Projects (RustGIS, GeoLibre)" in web.rs is not wrapped in tl!, unlike the desktop one.

Every new command is in the plugin NEVER list and the assistant gate.
Dependencies used by the new code (base64, rusqlite, web-time, egui_kittest) are already in the workspace, so no Cargo.toml changes are needed.

Bug (browser, ~75% confidence): the import queues every remote layer in one command, and Session::request_url refuses past MAX_URL_REQUESTS (16, crates/engine/src/lib.rs:647). In the browser, layer 17 onward fails with "16 downloads are already waiting", is rolled back here, and is only listed in the notes. A GeoLibre project with more than 16 remote layers therefore loses the rest, and re-importing creates a second map. The cap should not apply to the reservations one import makes, or the import should refuse up front with a clear message that says so.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 51504cc. The browser now checks required whole-file download slots before map.new and refuses an oversized batch atomically with an explicit message. Existing queued downloads reduce the available slots; streaming tiles/COGs and inline features use none. Shared source-address/inline resolution keeps the check consistent with loading. Regressions cover 17/16/15 requests and source-kind exceptions. Focused tests, full CI, wasm and hooks passed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (desktop, ~60% confidence): on native, project.importGeolibre runs on the UI frame, and layer.addUrl for each remote layer blocks on download_blocking, which waits up to 60 s per layer (BLOCKING_TIMEOUT). A project with several remote layers freezes the window for the sum of those downloads. If project.importQgis has the same shape, this is pre-existing and can be a follow-up. Otherwise, consider fetching through the background download path, as ui.addUrl does.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed: native URL import uses the existing synchronous layer.addUrl contract, so slow sources can delay completion. Moving native command execution onto asynchronous UI state is a separate lifecycle change; this PR retains native command/CLI semantics. The user guide now documents synchronous desktop imports in the pending follow-up batch.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance:s.project.clone() runs for every layer record, before any work is done. Session.project holds every map, layer and feature, so a project with N layers copies all loaded data about N times, even when every layer succeeds. The clone is only needed for the Err rollback at line ~119. Consider recording the lengths or ids that add_layer changes (layers, tiles, groups) and undoing just those on failure. Confidence: high that the cost is real; the fix is not small, so I have not given a suggestion.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This repeats the earlier snapshot concern. Dataset feature buffers are Arc-shared (Features wraps Arc<Vec<Feature>>), so the clone does not copy all loaded feature data. Layer metadata is copied, bounded by the 1,000-record import limit. I am retaining complete rollback because truncating newly added IDs would not restore all possible loader mutations.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bugs / performance (native):download_blocking runs on the calling thread, which is the UI thread for a desktop import. Its cap is MAX_DOWNLOAD (512 MiB), not the 64 MiB geolibre::MAX_TEXT budget used for project JSON, and the whole archive is buffered in memory. Each remote MBTiles layer can also block for up to 60 s, so several archives stack into a long freeze. The browser path counts these as download slots, but the native path has no equivalent bound. Confidence: medium. Consider a tighter per-archive limit, or refusing remote archives on native import and pointing the user to the background download path.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The 64 MiB bound applies to project JSON; an MBTiles archive is a separate binary data download under the existing 512 MiB download cap. The native synchronous wait and 60-second per-request timeout are documented limitations. I am retaining those existing download semantics in this PR rather than introducing a smaller arbitrary archive limit or another native download lifecycle.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (dead code):saved is never read. finish_archive ignores geolibreLayer.record and keeps the reservation's visible and opacity. The folder look is applied by the import loop after add_layer returns, so baking it in here is redundant. finish_layer still needs record.type == "mbtiles" to route the completion. Removing saved will also leave folder unused on wasm, so the parameter and its let _ = folder guard need to go too. Confidence: high.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The callback record is read for type to route MBTiles completion. You are right that its baked appearance fields became redundant when completion switched to preserving the reservation’s live appearance. They do not affect the result. I am leaving this optional callback-payload cleanup out of the remaining changes; the tested completion behavior is correct.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Security (low–medium, trust model): an absolute path that exists is read as data with no check against the project's folder, and dir is only required to be set, not to match. A shared .geolibre can therefore name any readable file (for example a CSV of credentials) that a parser accepts. The file is then loaded into a layer and could be saved into the user's .rgis. The docs say to import only trusted projects, so this is a disclosed design choice, not a defect. A prompt or an explicit confirmation before reading absolute paths outside the project folder would close the gap. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This is the previously reviewed, documented trust model for explicitly opened local projects: saved absolute and relative paths remain usable, including moved-source fallback. Text/URL imports without an explicit folder cannot read local files. I am retaining local-project compatibility rather than adding another source-confirmation flow.
Reviewed the whole PR (23 files) against AGENTS.md. I found no definite correctness bugs. The four inline comments below are on crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs.
Bugs
None confirmed. I checked the browser download admission, the Zarr reader's byte budget, the group ancestry walk, the pending-reservation cleanup and undo, and the reserved-position completion after a map switch. The tests cover each of these, and the logic held up on reading.
Security
An imported project can name any absolute path that exists, and the file is read as data with no check against the project folder. The docs say to import only trusted projects, so this is a disclosed trust choice, not a defect. A confirmation before reading paths outside the project folder would close the gap. Confidence: medium. (inline)
Performance
import_project deep-clones the whole Project for every layer record, so the cost grows with layer count times loaded data. Confidence: high that the cost is real. (inline)
Native remote MBTiles use download_blocking, which runs on the UI thread with a 512 MiB cap and a 60 s timeout per archive. Several archives can stack into a long freeze, and the 64 MiB budget does not apply to them. Confidence: medium. (inline)
Quality
The saved record in the browser MBTiles branch is never read, because finish_archive ignores it. Removing it also requires dropping the folder parameter, which would otherwise be unused on wasm. Confidence: high. (inline)
Nits, grouped and not posted inline:

Cover restored connection passwords in the forged-map test.
The forged-map test never creates an active database login, so it cannot detect a removed restore_active call on the rejected-map path. Removing the call at items.rs:436 leaves the test passing. Add an active login before the failed map.import. After the import fails, assert that the connection password is restored in the same password state that clear_active forgets. Building that login may need a connection fixture, so keep the change within the test file.

Use a reserved transparency that differs from the saved record in this test.
The test sets the reserved layer to 60.0, and the saved record's opacity: 0.4 also maps to 60.0. finish_layer applies the record style and then copies the reserved layer's transparency over it. If that copy were removed, completion would still produce 60.0, so the test would still pass. The test also sets the value before the read starts and makes no change while the read is pending. It therefore cannot show that a reserved value survives completion when it differs from the record.

The offline snapshot finding is fixed in 0c5c69e. The Zarr regression now uses reserved transparency 25, distinct from the saved record’s 60, so reverting appearance preservation would fail it. I am leaving the optional database-login fixture expansion out of this batch; the rejected import follows the existing connection-restoration helper path. Full CI, wasm and hooks passed.
Please approve the current head, 0c5c69e. All reported findings have dispositions, and the latest offline-snapshot finding is marked addressed. Full local CI, the wasm build and hooks passed; GitHub checks are still running with no failures so far. The changes-requested review on the earlier head is still blocking approval.

Bug (confidence ~0.6): undoing a finished download re-creates a placeholder that blocks saving.
The completion runs as a normal layer.addDownload command, so it records an undo snapshot taken before the download landed. Undoing it restores the placeholder with its geolibre-pending: token. The download can't be re-run, and ensure_imports_complete then refuses saved_text, packaging, and offline snapshots until the user manually deletes that layer. Nothing in the message explains this.
Suggested fix: when an undo restores a snapshot containing a reservation, or when completion is recorded, either skip the undo step for completion (request_only-style) or cancel the pending state on undo. At minimum, the save error should name the layer that is still pending.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in eae4d1b. Successful completion retires that token from undo/redo snapshots; failed-download cleanup does the same. Undo can remove completed data and redo restores it, but neither resurrects a consumed reservation. The regression undoes completion and an earlier map switch, then redoes both, checking saving remains possible throughout. Focused tests, full CI, wasm and hooks passed.

Performance (confidence ~0.5):let before = s.project.clone(); runs for every layer. With up to 1,000 layers, the whole project (all maps and layer metadata) is cloned 1,000 times. Features are shared until written, so the cost is smaller than it looks, but it still scales with the project size times the layer count.
A cheaper rollback: record the map's layer and tile counts and the group children before the record, then truncate on error. Alternatively, clone once and rebuild only on error.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The remaining cost is metadata cloning; feature buffers are shared. This repeats the previously reviewed rollback tradeoff. I am retaining full restoration within the 1,000-record bound rather than replacing it with ID/count rollback that omits other mutations.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit): the stop-value-to-key conversion is written twice, here and in class_labels below. The two must match, since labels are keyed by the same string. Extract one helper, e.g. fn class_key(value: Option<&Value>) -> String, and use it in both places.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The two conversions currently match and are covered by style/legend tests. This is an optional extraction with no reported behavior difference. I am leaving it out of the remaining correctness batch.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Resource bound (confidence ~0.3): when a batch errors, poll returns and the reader is dropped, but up to six in-flight downloads keep running. Their byte buffers land in orphaned slots and are not counted against MAX_IMPORT_BYTES. A following Zarr reader can then start with its full budget, so transient memory can exceed 128 MiB.
Consider cancelling or waiting for the remaining slots before reporting the error, or sharing one budget counter across readers.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in eae4d1b. A failed Zarr reader retains its error and waits for the current callback batch to drain before returning failure and allowing the next reader to start. A no-network callback regression verifies that a failure cannot release the reader while another slot is still pending. Focused tests, full CI, wasm and hooks passed.
I read the full diff against pr-context/AGENTS.md and checked the key claims in the source: the download helpers and their timeout, the snapshot-based undo in Session::run, ui.openUrl reach, and the proportional renderer's divide guard. I found one likely bug and a few smaller concerns. Four inline comments are posted.
Bugs
Undoing a finished download re-creates a placeholder that blocks saving (confidence ~0.6). The completion is an ordinary layer.addDownload command, so its undo snapshot predates the download. Undo brings back the geolibre-pending: layer, which cannot be re-downloaded and blocks saved_text, packaging and offline snapshots until the user deletes it by hand. crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:436.
Failed batch leaves downloads outside the memory budget (confidence ~0.3). geolibreui.rs drops the reader on error, but up to six in-flight downloads still land. A following Zarr reader can then start with a full 128 MiB budget. crates/ui-egui/src/geolibreui.rs:53.
Security
No blocking issues. Imports from files, URLs and text are user-only and gated for the assistant. The URL path goes through address::check. Local data reach is disclosed in the docs and the gate text.
Informational (confidence ~0.4): a project can name absolute paths and ../ relative paths, which are read on import. This matches the documented behaviour and the QGIS importer, so I am not requesting a change.
Performance
import_project clones the whole project for every layer (up to 1,000 times) for rollback (confidence ~0.5). Features are shared until written, so the cost is moderate. crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:108.
Quality
The stop-value key conversion is duplicated in style.rs. crates/map/src/geolibre/style.rs:40.
The report-count expansion loop in import_project (about lines 268–272) is hard to follow. Its comment does not say why it is needed.
add_layer is about 170 lines and mixes tile, MBTiles, pending-download and feature paths. Splitting it would help review.
Unrelated change in backstage.rs: the card accessibility flag changes to ui.is_enabled(), and the card doc comment is trimmed. Neither is in the PR description. Consider a separate PR or a note.
AGENTS.md

Quality (fmt gate): this let text=json!(...) line, and the other let x= / let out=s.run(...) lines added in this test block, are not rustfmt output. rustfmt.toml sets max_width = 140, and cargo xtask ci runs cargo fmt --all --check, so CI should reject them. Security (trust boundary, confidence: medium-low):resolve tries the saved absolute path first and reads it if it exists. The dir default is the project's folder, so opening a .geolibre file can make RustGIS read any local file that a data parser accepts (CSV, GeoJSON, and so on), and that content then shows in the map. Relative paths can also climb out of the folder. The URL fetches (download_blocking_limited at line 34, and the layer fetches) go through address::check(url, None), which is the policy for addresses the user typed. So addresses embedded in an untrusted project also get that trust, including private-network hosts. docs/user-guide/workspace.md discloses the local-path behaviour, but the maintainers should decide whether project-embedded paths and URLs should be narrower, for example by reporting out-of-folder reads in the import notes or using the public-only fetcher.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This repeats the documented trust-model decision: explicitly opened local projects may reference local files and network services, including private services. Text/URL imports cannot read local files without an explicit folder. I am retaining that interoperability behavior in this PR; a stricter source policy would be a broader product decision.
(fewer if other downloads are queued, active, or awaiting completion); a larger batch is refused before creating its map.
Split that project into smaller imports or use the desktop app. Streaming tiles and COGs do
not consume those download slots. Desktop GeoLibre URL imports wait for each download on the calling thread, which can pause the interface.
Each request, including a remote MBTiles archive, has a 60-second timeout; download larger archives locally before importing. Zarr sources use their saved variable and dimension indices,
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Docs (accuracy, confidence: medium): "Each request, including a remote MBTiles archive, has a 60-second timeout" holds only for the blocking desktop path (BLOCKING_TIMEOUT in crates/tiles/src/cache.rs). The async desktop download agent uses 900 seconds (native::download, cache.rs around line 1028), and in the browser RustGIS sets no timeout of its own. Please narrow the sentence to the blocking desktop imports, or name the other limits.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The immediately preceding sentence explicitly scopes this passage to “Desktop GeoLibre URL imports” that wait on the calling thread. “Each request” refers to those blocking imports, including MBTiles. It does not describe the asynchronous Add Data agent or browser requests. I am retaining the existing scoped wording.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Test nit (confidence: high):download_landed returns a bool, and this call ignores it. The same applies to the archive test's s.download_landed(download, std::fs::read(path)...). Wrap these in assert!(...) so a failed landing is reported at the call site, not as a later "no such download". Related nits, not inline: the crates/ui-egui/src/backstage.rs change from true to ui.is_enabled() is unrelated to GeoLibre, so split it out or explain it; and add_layer in crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs is about 150 lines covering tiles, MBTiles, Zarr and plain sources, so it would read better split.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The tests verify successful completion and the resulting layers, so a failed landing already fails the regression. Asserting the intermediate boolean would improve failure locality but is optional. I am leaving that test-only cleanup and helper extraction out of this PR’s remaining changes. The shared card accessibility state was already explained as supporting the GeoLibre card’s actual-widget path.
Bugs. None confirmed. I traced the import, the browser reservation and admission logic, Zarr completion, and undo/redo, and found no defect I could verify by reading. Non-test code has no unwrap/expect/panic.
Security
Medium-low confidence. Project-embedded local paths are read from disk, and the absolute path is tried first, with the project folder as the default. Project-embedded URLs go through address::check(url, None), the policy for user-typed addresses, so private-network hosts are reachable from an untrusted file. This is documented in workspace.md, but it needs a maintainer decision. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs:405.
Performance
None. I considered the per-layer s.project.clone() in import_project and dropped it: Dataset.features is an Arc<Vec<Feature>>, so the clone copies metadata and bumps refcounts.
Quality
High confidence. The let x= lines in the new tests, and in crates/map/src/geolibre.rs around lines 196 and 208, are not rustfmt output. cargo xtask ci runs cargo fmt --all --check with max_width = 140, so the gate should fail. The PR body says fmt passed, so please re-run it. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/tests.rs:18938.
High confidence. download_landed returns a bool that the tests ignore (also in the archive test). Inline comment on crates/engine/src/tests.rs:18986.
Nits, grouped in that comment: the backstage.rs change to ui.is_enabled() is unrelated to GeoLibre, and add_layer is about 150 lines and would read better split.

Medium confidence. The "Looking at the app" section asks for screenshots in the PR for substantial visible changes, such as the new Start-page card and the file-picker filter. The PR body says screenshots are "retained privately, not committed", so none are attached.
Medium confidence. The "60-second timeout" claim in workspace.md:108 is only accurate for the blocking desktop path. The async desktop agent uses 900 s, and the browser has no RustGIS timeout. Inline comment on docs/user-guide/workspace.md:108.
Checked and found fine: the Zarr 403 and 404 handling (is_absent covers both), the admission arithmetic against MAX_URL_REQUESTS = 16, the request_only reset after the import loop, the layer.addUrl TIFF path returning add_cog rather than pending, the ui.openItem → pending_open → base64 data route, and the web .json fallback to layer.addData.

Add a second pending token to the retirement test.
The new test creates one pending reservation, so it cannot detect over-clearing. retire_import_history is documented to keep unrelated pending imports. Its current implementation filters by token. A change that clears every reservation would still pass this test. Add a second pending download to the same test, complete only the first, and assert that the second token survives undo and redo.

Update the retirement test to create a second pending download with a distinct
token, complete only the first, and assert the second token remains pending
after both undo and redo. Keep the existing assertion that the completed token
is retired.

Thanks for approving eae4d1b. I reviewed the additional test suggestion: retirement filters by the exact token, while the existing regression exercises completion plus earlier-history undo/redo. Adding a second token would be useful extra coverage, but I am leaving that optional test expansion out of this PR’s remaining changes.
@Mavrick-F I’ll request approval for eae4d1b. The approval workflow will check permissions and review readiness. Your reported fixes and local validation are acknowledged; approval is not yet confirmed. Wait for all required GitHub checks to pass before merging.

Summary
Open a GeoLibre
.geolibreor legacy.geolibre.jsonproject as a new map, preserving the current project and its unsaved work. Addsproject.importGeolibrewith file, URL, JSON text and base64 inputs; desktop Open/Project New/drop routing; and browser project links and asynchronous source loading. Imports supported sources, view, bookmarks, groups, visibility, colour classes and labels, with per-layer notes for differences and skipped content.Combined classified colour and proportional size is tracked separately in #1017.
Testing
mainat58e0d34:cargo xtask cipassed (fmt, workspace Clippy with-D warnings, workspace tests and layers),cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-webpassed, andpre-commit run --all-filespassed. Both app-frame Zarr regressions passed in a focused run as well. Subsequent regressions cover serialized/budgeted Zarr reads, saved native slice indices and 1,000-group ancestry. Further tests cover consecutive-import admission, extensionless COGs, native plain-TIFF fallback opacity and engine/assistant callback guards..rgis, reopened it and compared screenshots. View and colour class boundaries persist; combined size remains the documented limitation tracked in Support proportional size alongside classified point colours #1017. Screenshots are retained privately, not committed.Related issue
Part of #962. Combined colour-and-size styling is split into #1017.
