feat(labels): a label's offset and background, as QGIS's offset from a point and its rectangle background - #1007
Piece 4b, first part, of #882. The split with #995 is set out in #995 (comment): offsets and backgrounds here; wrapping and repeat along lines come next as plain settings #995 can build on; the distance from a line goes to #995's step 2.
What it adds
Background: a rectangle behind a label's text.
Its parts: a fill and an outline (either can be none), the outline's width, padding across and up and down (0–50 pt), and a corner radius.
It is drawn by the CPU renderer (exports, layouts) and in the map view. It turns with a label along a line. A label curved character by character has none.
Other labels keep off it, as they keep off a halo (label_boxes adds its reach).
Its sizes grow with the label at a reference scale.
Offset: a label is moved from where its position puts it, right and down in points (±200).
It applies to points and polygons; a label along a line isn't moved.
labels.placement takes "offset": [right, down]. The position may then be left out.
labels.style takes "background": true (the default box: white, with a thin dark outline), false or null (none), or an object with the parts to set (fill, stroke, strokeWidth, padding, radius). What an object leaves out is kept. Junk is refused, as for the halo.
Labeling pane
Symbol tab: Background, then Fill and Outline (each with None), Outline width, Padding across, Padding up and down, Corner radius.
Position tab: Offset right and Offset down.
Colour picks are one undo step, as before: the pick machinery's halo: bool becomes a Part enum.
MapLibre export: text-offset in ems. A background has no MapLibre equivalent and is left out.
Compatibility: both settings are #[serde(default)] and left out when saved at their defaults. Old projects read and save as before, and a crafted value reads as none or within its range (tested).
QGIS import
Background: <text-style><background> as a rectangle.
Fill and outline come from its fill symbol (QGIS 3), else from shapeFillColor and shapeBorderColor and their width.
Padding from the size (buffer type), corner radius, and opacity.
Squares, ellipses and circles are drawn as rectangles and noted. SVG and marker shapes are left out and noted.
Also noted: fixed sizes, percentage radii, a background offset or turned on its own, and blending.
Offset: placement "offset from point" (placement="1") reads xOffset and yOffset in offsetUnits. On a point layer (<maplayer geometry="Point">), the distance around the point becomes an offset upward, since RustGIS's Auto puts the label above the point.
Distance: a distance from lines, around polygons, or with an unknown geometry (a style file) stays noted.
Measured in QGIS 4.2.3 (a point layer, offsets and distances in points, read off the rendered label boxes):
A positive yOffset moves the label down.
dist does nothing with offset from point, so it is no longer noted there.
Around the point, dist pushes the label out diagonally.
SMV25's 10 backgrounds (white boxes with a 0.1 mm dark outline on road numbers and traffic areas) now come over. Its labels use no offsets.

upstream/main itself now scores 11.0 % in the overview (10.9 % at #964's branch). The backgrounds change only 682 pixels of the overview: the score is 11.04 % with or without them, measured with a copy of the project whose backgrounds are switched off. They are small boxes, mostly on annotations QGIS draws at other scales.

52 test suites pass. Only the two render tests that fail on this machine without its fonts fail (text_takes_italic_alignment_and_letter_spacing, a_text_graphic_is_drawn_aligned_slanted_and_spaced); they are unrelated.
An independent review of the whole diff found that QGIS writes a percentage radius as Percentage, not Percent. This is fixed and tested. Following its notes, values too large for f32 now clamp to the maximum instead of 0, and QGIS's "outside polygons" placement now notes its distance.

…a point and its rectangle background
Piece 4b (first part) of opengeos#882.
- LabelClass gains `offset` ([right, down] points, ±200; a label along a
line isn't moved) and `background` (a rectangle behind the text: fill
and outline, each optional, outline width, padding across and up and
down, corner radius). Both are left out when saved at their defaults,
and a crafted value reads as none or within its range.
- Drawn by the CPU renderer (exports, layouts) and the map view alike,
turned with a label along a line; a curved label has none. Other labels
keep off a background as off a halo; sizes grow at a reference scale.
- labels.placement takes "offset" (the position may then be left out);
labels.style takes "background" (true, false/null, or the parts to set).
- Labeling pane: Background, Fill, Outline, Outline width, Padding and
Corner radius in Symbol; Offset right and down in Position.
- MapLibre export: text-offset in ems.
- QGIS import: the rectangle background (its fill symbol, else its
colours; padding, rounded corners, opacity), other shapes and sizes
noted; placement "offset from point" xOffset/yOffset in their units; on
a point layer, the distance around the point as an offset upwards.
Measured in QGIS 4.2.3: a positive yOffset moves the label down, and the
distance isn't used with an offset from the point, so it isn't noted
there any more.
- A script-completion test's pointer moved below the help, which the new
parameter makes taller.
Label classes now support background rectangles and two-axis placement offsets. Commands and editor controls configure them, QGIS import parses them, and map renderers draw backgrounds and apply offsets.

Summary
Label setting data model crates/map/src/symbology.rs, crates/map/src/lib.rs
LabelClass adds an optional background and a two-axis offset. Background dimensions and offsets have defaults, validation, and serialization support.
Command and editor configuration crates/engine/src/cmd/*, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md, crates/ui-egui/src/scriptcomplete.rs
Commands and editor controls configure backgrounds and offsets. Web-style output includes qualifying offsets. Tests cover updates, validation, undo, and project round-tripping. The script-completion test moves the pointer below the list.
QGIS parsing handles supported backgrounds, placement offsets, and point-layer distances. It reports unsupported or approximated settings.
Label placement and rendering crates/render/src/*, crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs
Placement applies offsets and reserves background space in collision bounds. Renderers draw backgrounds beneath labels and handle rotation; curved-glyph labels do not receive backgrounds.

Explanation
The title "feat(labels): a label's offset and background, as QGIS's offset from a point and its rectangle background" matches the main change. The PR adds label offsets and rectangular backgrounds to the labeling system, plus QGIS import of those settings. The title is long (105 characters) and wordy, and it names QGIS details that are secondary to the core feature. It is still specific and on topic, so it passes.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's intent. It has a Summary section that explains what the change adds and why it is split from #995 and #882. It has a Testing section with named tests, validation commands, and measured SMV25 results. The Related issue section is missing. The description links to issue #995 and comment, but it does not use the template's Closes/Part of format for the related issue. The description also contains no explicit template heading for Related issue, so this section is incomplete.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
The QGIS import turns a point layer's "around point" distance into a straight upward offset and reports nothing, though QGIS places it diagonally. Every other approximation in the import is noted, so this one should be too. (crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs:339) Confidence: high.
The MapLibre export writes text-offset for every class, including along-line placements that the renderer never moves. A line layer's exported labels therefore shift when RustGIS's do not. (crates/engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs:658, with a suggestion.) Confidence: medium-high.
Security
None found. Offsets, background values and padding are clamped or refused, and nothing uses unchecked indexing.
Performance
None significant. The extra text measurement in background_reach runs only for labels that have a background.
Quality
The background box and background_reach measure the text's height two different ways (size * 1.33 * 1.2 against block_height's size * 1.25), so vertical reach is over-reserved by about 0.17 × size. (crates/render/src/text.rs:444) Confidence: medium.
The QGIS unread note for "label offsets" was removed entirely. Offsets under placements other than 1 (around point, free, horizontal, line) are now dropped without a note. The QGIS behaviour for those placements was not measured in the PR. Confidence: low-medium.
The LabelBackground::checked comment says an infinite value is the most, but the de_background_* deserialisers map infinity to 0. The two disagree, though JSON cannot express infinity, so the practical effect is nil. (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1782 against :1839.) Confidence: low.
Unknown keys inside the background object are silently ignored, while unknown top-level keys get an "ignores" notice. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Checked and compliant: no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in the non-test code; the wasm and layering rules are untouched; user-visible text is wrapped in tl!; each crash fix has a test; docs are updated; the commands stay free of dialogs.
I checked the diff, the renderer paths the feature depends on (draw_upright, draw_turned, the map view's draw_label_ink, the collision boxes) and the engine's key-notice logic. I did not build or run the tests, because this session has no shell. The build and test claims in the PR description are unverified here.

…ch axis; an offset label of a point just out of view is placed
- label_boxes reserves a background's reach across and up and down separately.
- A point out of view by up to its classes' largest offset is placed, so its moved label shows.
- The MapLibre export leaves out text-offset for labels along a line, which the map doesn't move.
- The QGIS import notes a distance around points, moved straight up where QGIS goes diagonally.
QGIS offsets on placements RustGIS doesn't carry are now dropped with no report note. The old "label offsets, left out" note was removed, and only placement="1" reads offsets. Confidence ~40%, since I could not check QGIS 4.2.3 here. Inline comment on crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs:377.
Security
None found. Numeric inputs from files and commands are finite-checked and clamped, and I found no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code.
Performance
When any class has an offset, render/src/lib.rs now calls ctx.screen for every out-of-cull point, not just those in view. This is O(points) projections per frame, but it is bounded and likely minor. Confidence low.
Quality
crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs:622: the background number editor keys on strings with a _ fallback that silently edits padding up/down. A typo would go unnoticed. Confidence high, nit. Inline comment posted.
crates/map/src/symbology.rsLabelBackground::scaled: ..self.clone() could be ..*self, since the remaining fields are Copy. Confidence high, nit.
The four background deserializers repeat the clamping that checked() already does. Confidence moderate, nit.
AGENTS.md
Checked the never-crash rules, tl! on new UI strings, layering, wasm-sensitive code, and attribution. No violations found.
Not verified: the build, clippy, the test results, and whether the what_rustgis_has_no_place_for_is_noted expectations still match. I had no shell to run them, so these are unverified.
I checked the label-collision reach, the CPU and map-view background drawing order, the along-line offset handling, the MapLibre text-offset units, and the constructor coverage for PlacedLabel and LabelClass. I found no defects there.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base db02a22 to PR head d79d859).
…dding, not on its edge
The plain pair touched exactly at their 2-point paddings, where the text width's rounding (fonts differ on CI) decided whether they collide.
I read the full diff and the surrounding render, map-view and QGIS code. I could not build or run the tests here (no shell), so everything below comes from reading the code.
Bugs
QGIS offsets silently dropped (medium-high confidence). The old importer noted label offsets, left out for any non-zero offset. That note is gone, and offset() only reads offsets for placement 1. Placements 0/6 (Auto), 2/3 (line), 4/5 (Center) and 7/8 now import with no offset and no note. The test edit at crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs:536 (placement 1 → 2) hides this by dropping the offset assertion. Inline comment posted with a suggested fix at crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs:377. I could not confirm that QGIS honours the offset for those placements.
Security
None found. QGIS numbers are clamped and parsed as finite, and the command parameters go through checked()/LABEL_OFFSET clamps. I checked for unwrap/expect/unsafe in non-test code and found none.
Performance
Low (high confidence, low impact). background_reach calls background_box, which calls label_width again, so labels with a background measure text twice per frame in label_boxes. Only labels with a background are affected.
Quality
crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:135: labels.placement with a non-string position (for example 3) and an offset silently ignores the position. Without an offset it errors. Make the two paths consistent (low confidence).
crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs:301: the "patterns or gradients" note fires for any non-SimpleFill fill layer, including non-pattern classes (low).
crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1798: ..self.clone() in scaled is unnecessary, since the fields are copied (nit).
crates/ui-egui/src/scriptcomplete.rs (test): the hard-coded pointer position y = 640.0 is fragile against layout changes (nit).
docs/user-guide/workspace.md (~lines 1758–1760): the approximations list is one very long unwrapped line, and "and wrapping" reads awkwardly inside the list (nit).
AGENTS.md
No unwrap/expect/panic/unsafe in non-test code. The new commands use get() and clamps.
User-visible strings use tl! (including tl!(label) with variables, which the codebase already uses).
Layering is respected: rustgis_map/render have no egui dependency, and rounded_rect is only widened to pub(crate).
Docs were updated.
I could not confirm that cargo xtask ci, the wasm build or the test suite pass.

This branch expands visibility only for offset_reach. A label with non-zero background padding and no offset is still discarded when its anchor is just outside ctx.cull, even though the background can enter the viewport. Include a scaled background reach in this check, or test the constructed label bounds before discarding the candidate.

yOffsetmoves the label down.distdoes nothing with offset from point, so it is no longer noted there.distpushes the label out diagonally.SMV25's 10 backgrounds (white boxes with a 0.1 mm dark outline on road numbers and traffic areas) now come over. Its labels use no offsets.
SMV25
upstream/mainupstream/mainitself now scores 11.0 % in the overview (10.9 % at #964's branch). The backgrounds change only 682 pixels of the overview: the score is 11.04 % with or without them, measured with a copy of the project whose backgrounds are switched off. They are small boxes, mostly on annotations QGIS draws at other scales.Tests
