Summary

First part of #1011 (step 1 of #995): a point's label whose place is taken by another label now tries the other places round the point before it is left out.

  • A new label class setting, other_positions, off by default. Placement is greedy, so a label taking another place could take the spot a lower-priority label has today; off, a saved project looks exactly as before. It is left out of the project file when off, and a value that isn't true reads as off.
  • The places, after the class's own: Above Right, Above Left, Below Right, Below Left, Right, Left, Above, Below. This is QGIS's cartographic order (DEFAULT_PLACEMENT_ORDER), with the class's own position left out. The class's offset (feat(labels): a label's offset and background, as QGIS's offset from a point and its rectangle background #1007) applies to each of them.
  • Only a point's label gets them: a line's labels and their repeats (feat(labels): wrapping and repeat along lines, as QGIS's wrap and repeat distance #1014) have none.
  • A label candidate is now a struct carrying its alternatives. Turned and tilted views, extrusions and terrain move them the same way they move the label's icon. A label still counts once against the candidate caps, and the tilted view's de-duplication is unchanged.
  • place_labels tries the label's own place, then each alternative, and takes the first where all of it shows. Where none does, it behaves exactly as before. The MapLibre show/hide rules moved unchanged into shows().
  • The label lock keeps which place won (Map::label_lock is now Vec<(LabelKey, u8)>, over feat(labels): wrapping and repeat along lines, as QGIS's wrap and repeat distance #1014's four-part key), so a locked label stays where it went as the map moves.
  • Convert to Annotation turns the setting off: annotations stay on their points.

There is no control for it yet. The engine command and the checkbox in the Labeling pane's Position tab come in the next PR.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci.
  • New tests:
    • labels_try_their_alternatives: no alternatives; the first free one; all taken; locked.
    • point_labels_go_round_their_point: off and on, the lock while the map moves, and turned and tilted views.
    • other_positions_are_kept_and_old_labels_save_as_before and label_alternatives_go_round_the_point in symbology.rs.
    • The Convert to Annotation engine test checks the annotation layer has the setting off.
    • feat(labels): wrapping and repeat along lines, as QGIS's wrap and repeat distance #1014's repeat-lock test reads the repeat from the lock entry's key.
  • Manual: a project with crowded point labels looks the same as on main. With "other_positions": true added to a class in the project file, labels that were dropped appear round their points, and they stay put with Lock on while panning.

Walkthrough

Point labels can try ordered alternative positions when enabled. The renderer selects positions based on visibility and collision checks, and records selected positions in label locks. Engine updates adjust when locks are cleared and how nested lock keys are handled.

Changes: Point Label Placement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Alternative placement contract
crates/map/src/symbology.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs
LabelClass gains a default-off other_positions setting. LabelPlacement::alternatives returns the other eight point placements in a defined order. Renderer candidates carry ordered alternatives.
Render alternatives and record selections
crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/map/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/layout.rs, crates/render/src/stream_tests.rs
The renderer propagates alternatives through label transforms and selects a fitting position. It records the chosen position index in label locks. Tests cover alternatives, locks, transformed views, and candidate performance.
Engine label-lock lifecycle
crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/items.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/service_group.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs
Engine updates compare label placement settings when deciding whether to clear locks. Converted annotation classes disable alternatives, and refresh filters match the layer ID in nested lock keys.

Explanation

The title names the main change: point labels whose place is taken now try other positions around the point, and it is marked as Part 1a. It matches the objectives, which describe an opt-in other_positions setting for point-label classes that tries alternative placements in order. The title is specific and omits the supporting changes (lock retention, annotation conversion, candidate structs), which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a Summary that explains the change and why it is needed, including the off-by-default design and the compatibility reasoning. It has a Testing section that lists cargo xtask ci, the new tests, and manual checks. It has a Related issue section that cites #1011 and #995. The UI evidence section is omitted, which is acceptable because the PR has no user-interface control yet and the template says to omit that section when no visible UI change exists.

Quality (low): this filter_map shortens the alternatives list in tilted views, so an index into it no longer matches the place's number in Placement::keys (doc at line 4216, "its alternative's number from 1"). Nothing breaks today because the lock is only stored from flat or turned placements (line 3608 excludes Labels::Tilted), but that invariant is what keeps it correct. Suggest a comment at line 3608 or in the doc at 4216 stating that a lock is never taken from a tilted placement.

Agreed. With the fix above a tilted label may even take an alternative as its own, so the numbers drift further. In 8de60d1 I added a comment where the lock is stored saying it is never taken from a tilted placement, and why.

Code review

Bugs

  • Tilted views drop a point label whose own place is off-screen (above the sky line or too far), before its alternatives are tried, so a visible alternative is never used. Suggestion attached. Confidence: medium-high. I did not compile or run this; it is from reading the code.

Security

  • Nothing found. The new other_positions flag is read with de_flag, which turns any value other than true into off. The lock index uses checked_sub/get, and u8::try_from is guarded. No new unwrap in non-test code.

Performance

  • With other_positions on, every point label computes its 7 alternative positions and allocates a Vec each frame, even when its own place is free. label_boxes also runs once per attempt. Low severity.

Quality

  • The lock index counts alternatives after tilted views drop off-screen ones, so it does not match the doc on Placement::keys. It is only safe because a lock is never stored from a tilted placement. Low confidence on the risk, high on the missing comment.

AGENTS.md

  • Pass: no UI strings, no assets or dependencies, no unsafe, and the hostile-input cases are covered by the new serde and placement tests.
  • Note: the docs in docs/user-guide/cartography.md do not mention the new field. That is acceptable since the PR says there is no control yet.

Tests

  • The turned and tilted check in point_labels_go_round_their_point only counts labels, so it would not catch a wrong transform of the alternatives. No test covers the horizon case. Low severity.

Bugs

  • A locked label stores the index of the place it won, and that index is resolved against alternatives built from the class's current placement and other_positions. with_labels only clears the lock when the class list changes, so changing placement on a locked layer makes the index restore a different spot. Turning other_positions off makes the label silently fall back to its own place. (medium confidence; crates/render/src/lib.rs:3444)

Security

  • Nothing found. The new other_positions field reads through lenient/de_flag, and the new non-test code has no unwrap, expect or unsafe.

Performance

  • Alternatives are built and then discarded for locked labels. Checking the lock first avoids that. (low confidence; crates/render/src/lib.rs:3439)

Quality

  • The doc comment for turn_with now sits on tilt_candidate, and turn_with has no doc. (high confidence; crates/render/src/lib.rs:4138)
  • For Auto on a point, the Above alternative sits only about 0.4h + 2 pt from the own place, so it nearly always collides. (low confidence; crates/render/src/lib.rs:3439)

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The new code adds no user-facing strings, touches nothing below apps/ in a way that affects wasm, and adds no unwrap or panic in non-test code.
  • Test gap: lift_labels and raise_labels now shift alternatives (terrain and extrusions), and no test checks that. The turned and tilted tests check counts only. (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3439)

I did not compile or run the tests (no shell here). The logic checks above come from reading the code.

Code review

I found no definite bugs in PR #1025. I read the full diff and the surrounding code, but I could not compile or run the tests here (no shell), so the CI results are the check on compilation and the new tests.

Bugs: None found. I traced these paths and they hold:

  • place_labels: with other_positions off, the candidate has no alternatives, so the loop matches the old behaviour. When no place is whole, the label falls back to its own place, as before.
  • Lock numbering: placement enumerates the own place as 0 and alternatives from 1, which matches the render path's won - 1 lookup.
  • same_places relocks on any change to other_positions or to placement while a class has the setting on. It keeps the lock for offset changes and for placement changes with the setting off on both sides.
  • Feature labels are built with icon: None, so moving only the text to an alternative does not detach an icon.
  • All label_lock users and LabelClass literals were updated.
  • No added line exceeds the repo's max_width = 140.

Security: None. The new other_positions flag is read through de_flag, which treats anything other than true as off.

Performance (confidence: medium-low): With the setting on, a point label whose own place is taken runs label_boxes and shows once per alternative, up to 9 times. Each label_boxes call allocates two Vecs, and an 8-entry Vec is allocated for every point candidate. The 20,000-candidate limit still applies, but a dense point layer could slow down noticeably. The existing timing test has no alternatives, so it would not catch this. Inline comment posted on crates/render/src/lib.rs:4252.

Quality (nit): The comment at crates/render/src/lib.rs:3597 is hard to parse. A suggested rewording is in the inline comment.

AGENTS.md: Compliant as far as I can tell. The new code has no unwrap, expect or indexing outside tests, and no unsafe. It adds no user-visible strings, and the stated scope (no UI control yet) matches the AGENTS.md rules for this kind of change. The added project-file key is not documented in docs/user-guide/cartography.md; that is acceptable while the setting has no control.

Test coverage: The new tests cover the alternative order, the fall-back in tilted views, the lock across pans, and the relock rules. I did not find a test that exercises the timing of the alternatives path (see the performance note).

Code review

I found no correctness bugs. The logic holds up under the cases I traced: greedy placement, lock index stability across views, the relock rules in same_places, and the Convert to Annotation reset. The new tests cover the paths they name. Two low-confidence inline notes are posted, and the nits below are grouped.

Bugs

  • None found.

Security

  • None. The new other_positions flag reads through de_flag, so junk values read as off, and the project-file path has no new unchecked input.

Performance

  • Candidate.alternatives is a heap Vec per candidate, and place_labels re-measures label boxes for up to eight alternatives. This only matters when other_positions is on, and the 20k-candidate test passes. A fixed-size array with a length would avoid the per-candidate allocation. Confidence: about 40%.

Quality

  • render/src/lib.rs:1905 (low confidence, about 30%): alternatives are lifted by the own place's displacement, not by their own ground height. Inline note posted.
  • render/src/lib.rs:4173 (about 50%): a point label whose own place is out of sight is dropped even when an alternative is in sight, because its icon is still projected from its own place. This contradicts the flat path's "icon stays" rule. It is latent, since point labels never carry icons. Inline note posted.
  • labels.rs:290: same_places allocates two Vecs on every label command. An iterator zip would avoid that. This is a nit, and a closure returning a borrowing iterator needs care to compile.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. There is no unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe in non-test code. There are no new UI strings, so nothing needs tl!. The change stays below L6 and needs no wasm-specific code.

Confidence on the review as a whole is high. The two inline notes are both marked low to moderate.

Thanks. On the grouped notes: alternatives is an empty Vec (no allocation) whenever the setting is off, and in tilted views its length varies as places out of sight drop out, so a fixed array wouldn't save much. same_places runs once per label command, not per frame, so I'd keep the simpler Vec form.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the code around the changed lines (label_boxes, LabelPlacement::offset, the label_lock users across the workspace, and all LabelClass literal sites). I could not build or run the tests here, so everything below is from reading the code.

Bugs: None found. I checked:

  • The lock index mapping: won is taken from the index in place_labels, and restoring uses others().nth(won - 1) over the same unfiltered list.
  • Locks are never taken from tilted views, so the re-indexing in tilt_candidate cannot corrupt a stored lock.
  • has_text / has_icon from l.text / l.icon match the emptiness of label_boxes.
  • Every label_lock user and every LabelClass struct literal is updated.

Security: None found. The new other_positions field is read through de_flag, which treats anything other than true as off. No new command or parser input.

Performance (medium-low confidence):

  • render/src/lib.rs:4284: colliding point labels run up to 8 box and grid checks each, every frame. The 5 s test bound does not measure release-build cost on dense layers. Inline comment posted.
  • render/src/lib.rs:3462: others().collect() allocates a Vec for every point label each frame whenever other_positions is on, even when the own place is free. Inline comment posted.

Quality (nits, not posted inline):

  • lift_labels and raise_labels repeat the same alternative-shifting line. A small helper would remove the duplication.
  • same_places (engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:289) returns true when the placement changes but neither side tries other positions. Its name and doc ("put their point labels in the same places") overstate that. Something like lock_names_places_still would describe it better.

Design question (low confidence): When an alternative is used, only the text moves and the icon stays at the point (place_labels doc, "an icon stays"). The PR body does not say this. Please confirm it is intended.

AGENTS.md: No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. No new user-visible strings, so nothing needs tl!. No new dependencies. No wasm-specific code. The new tests use web_time. The PR's cargo xtask ci claim cannot be checked from here.

Thanks. Icon: intended, and latent today, since feature labels carry no icon and tile labels, which do, get no alternatives. same_places: both relock paths now call lock_holds (6cccee5), which says what they check. The shift in lift_labels/raise_labels is one line each; I'd leave it inline.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md and the surrounding code. I could not compile or run the tests here (no shell), so the build and test results are unverified. I found no confirmed bugs. The change is opt-in (other_positions defaults to off), and with it off, place_labels takes the same path as before.

Bugs: None confirmed. I checked:

  • has_text/has_icon now come from field presence rather than box emptiness. label_boxes returns a box for any non-empty text and one per icon, so the two are equivalent.
  • Every label_lock and LabelClass use site, and every Candidate tuple access, uses the new types or .. syntax. No leftover tuple access was found.
  • Every path that changes placement (labels.placement, style apply, convert, service-group refresh) goes through with_labels or the style-apply path, so lock_holds covers them.

Security: None. The new other_positions flag is read leniently (de_flag) and any value other than true reads as off. No new commands or parsing.

Performance:

  • label_boxes is recomputed for each alternative, and each call re-measures the text (render/src/lib.rs:4318). Only the position differs, so this could be done once. Confidence: medium; I haven't profiled it. (Inline comment posted.)

Quality:

  • The tilt_candidate re-indexing of alternatives is fragile, though the render guard prevents a bad lock today (render/src/lib.rs:4202). Confidence: low. (Inline comment posted.)
  • Nit: others uses .filter(|_| class.other_positions && is_point) (render/src/lib.rs:3494). Something like (class.other_positions && is_point).then(...) would read more directly. Confidence: high, but purely stylistic.
  • Nit: same_places (engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:296) is a long one-liner. Rustfmt may already reflow it. Confidence: low.

AGENTS.md:

  • No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code. The new code uses unwrap_or and checked_sub.
  • No std::time (the test uses web_time). Wasm-safe.
  • No new user-visible strings, so no tl! needed.
  • Layering holds: the new code is in map and render.
  • Regression coverage exists for each new branch (lock, tilt, convert, serde).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the label lock when a layer's rows change.

With labels locked, a row-changing edit keeps the lock. Locked labels are then matched to the wrong features.

For in-memory layers, lock keys use the row index. label_row returns row when complete_source is false (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3076). The renderer then draws a label only if (lid, row, ci, i) is in the lock (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3487-3491). Two paths remove or replace rows and keep the lock:

  • Feature delete: features.remove(r) followed by touch_geometry(), with no lock change (crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs:105-111).
  • Geoprocessing Update output: the dataset is replaced, with no lock change (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:791-798).

After a delete, a feature moves to a lower row and matches the key of the feature that was there before. It can then be drawn, or relocated to an alternative place (won, crates/render/src/lib.rs:3495-3500), even though it was not locked. A feature that was locked can also lose its label.

Service child refresh is not affected. crates/engine/src/cmd/service_group.rs:297-299 and 312-314 remove the layer's lock entries.

Suggested remedy: set s.map_mut().label_lock = None in these row-changing paths, as crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:273 already does when the class list changes. The labels are then locked again on the next frame.

Clear `s.map_mut().label_lock` when the feature-delete path removes a row and
when the geoprocessing `Update` path replaces the dataset, before or alongside
the mutation. This prevents row-index-based lock entries from being applied to
different features; leave service child refresh behavior unchanged.

Assert the position of the alternative label in the turned view.

The test point_labels_go_round_their_point checks only label counts in the turned view. The turned path transforms alternative labels in a separate loop. A regression in that loop can leave an alternative in band coordinates while the count assertion still passes. Add a position check for the second label in the turned view, measured against the point's turned screen position.

Assert other_positions on every annotation class, not only Default.

The conversion test checks other_positions only on the annotation's Default class. The source layer has no extra label class, so the per-class clearing in convert is not exercised. A change that clears only Default would still pass this test.

The current convert clears the flag on Default and on every class. This test gap does not reflect a current defect.

Add an extra class with other_positions enabled to the source layer before the conversion. Then assert that every annotation class has the flag cleared. The is_empty check keeps the all assertion from passing vacuously.

Cover the true-to-false other_positions transition in the lock test.

The new test sets other_positions to true and never sets it back to false. No assertion checks that a lock clears when alternatives are turned off. same_places treats that change as unequal (crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:295-297), so lock_holds returns false and with_labels clears label_lock (labels.rs:267-274). A placement-only lock_holds would still pass the current test.

style.apply can exercise this transition without a dedicated setting command. It replaces the layer's labels with the style's labels and then calls lock_holds on the old and new labels. A style stored with alternatives off, applied to a layer that has them on, produces the true-to-false change. Add this focused test after a_change_to_where_point_labels_go_locks_them_again:

Suggested test

Seed both children's lock entries before the single-child refresh, and assert that only the refreshed child's entries are removed.

The group refresh at tests.rs:15700 removes every lock entry, so the single-child refresh at tests.rs:15709-15712 runs against an empty lock. With an empty lock, skipping the single-child pruning in service_group.rs would not change the outcome, and the test would still pass.

With child_id set, every read maps to the refreshed child. The retain at service_group.rs:297-299 then removes only that child's entries. The other child's entry should remain. Seeding both children and asserting that only the other child's entry remains covers this path.

Thanks for the approval. The lock and row changes: right, but it predates this PR. Locks have named labels by row since the label lock came in (#25; #732 added the class), and neither feature delete nor a GP Update has ever cleared them. I'll open a separate issue and PR for both paths. The test nits (turned position, every annotation class, turning the option off) fit the follow-up PR that adds the command and the checkbox, so I'll fold them in there.
