feat(macos): a native menu bar beside the ribbon - #1126
On macOS the desktop app's menu bar held only winit's minimal app menu (About, Hide, Quit). That Quit sent terminate:, so ⌘Q quit without the Save / Don't Save / Cancel question from #945. This adds a small native menu bar beside the ribbon. It isn't a copy of the ribbon: each item runs a command the app already has.

How it works (apps/rustgis/src/menu.rs, macOS only)
Built with muda 0.21. It is MIT or Apache-2.0, and only adds crossbeam-channel and keyboard-types on macOS. Its unsafe stays inside the crate, so unsafe_code = "forbid" holds. winit's default menu is turned off through eframe's event_loop_builder (with_default_menu(false)). Notices refreshed with cargo xtask notices.
Items run existing commands:
File, View and Help run theirs through run_by_user, as the ribbon does, so New Project asks to save first.
Edit items work as their keys do (raw_input_hook):
Cut, Copy, Paste and Select All arrive as clipboard events and keys, so a focused text field handles them exactly as when typed.
Undo and Redo press ⌘Z / ⇧⌘Z in a focused text field or on ModelBuilder's canvas, and otherwise the key the keymap gives them, so the keymap runs edit.undo / edit.redo as when typed.
With no key bound, Undo and Redo run the command directly, without a "nothing to undo" warning.
They stay enabled even with nothing to undo in the project, because a text field undoes its own text.
muda's standard copy:/paste: items were tried first. muda leaves them enabled in the egui window, where nothing answers them, so they swallowed ⌘V.
Shortcuts:
They are the keymap's, and only those with ⌘. A menu key without ⌘ (Delete, Home) would take the key from text fields.
Redo prefers ⇧⌘Z. Undo/Redo show ⌘Z/⇧⌘Z only when the keymap gives that key to no other command.
A menu command never shows ⌘Z or ⌘Y, so text fields keep their undo even if one is bound there.
⌘+ gets no menu key, because a key code can't say "+" on every layout.
The bar is built again when the language or any shown shortcut changes.
Enabling:
Items grey out as their commands do.
All app items, Close Window included, grey out while a dialog such as "Save changes?" has the keys. Chosen commands are dropped then, as the keymap's are.
Queued choices run one per frame, so one that opens "Save changes?" stops the next.
A failed rebuild waits until the language or a shortcut changes.
Shortcut editor:
It refuses the keys the menu bar keeps (⌘Q, ⌘W, ⌘,, ⌘A, ⌘H, ⌥⌘H, ⌘M), as it refuses ⌘C/⌘X/⌘V, via the new UiState::reserved_shortcuts.
The reserved keys are set before stored shortcuts load, and stored bindings on them are left out, since they could never run.
While it records, the menu passes its items' keys to it, so ⌘S and the like can still be recorded.
Native panels: a choice made while a native panel (an rfd Save/Open dialog) has the keys is dropped, so it doesn't replay into the app after the panel closes. As before this change, ⌘V and ⌘A don't edit the native Save panel's name field; I checked that 0.4.0 behaves the same.
Translation: labels are translated in logical order through i18n::tr_raw (now pub), since AppKit lays out right-to-left text itself.
Other platforms: Windows and Linux are unchanged.
New in rustgis-ui-egui: RustGisApp::shortcuts_of, shortcut_command, command_enabled and capturing_shortcut, and UiState::reserved_shortcuts.
Not included
File › Open Recent: RustGIS keeps only the last project, not a list of recent ones; that needs its own storage.
Testing
Unit tests (apps/rustgis/src/menu.rs):
every item names a command that exists; each ui.* item is run and must not answer "unknown command";
each fixed shortcut isn't one the keymap gives another command;
shortcuts follow the keymap, including a rebound key moving to its new item and Undo dropping a ⌘Z given away.
Shortcut editor test: it refuses a reserved key.
By hand on macOS 27 (Apple Silicon), release build in an app bundle:
every menu lists its items, and the Window list and Help search are present;
View › Layers toggles the pane;
Edit › Undo and Redo undo and redo a change;
⌘V from the menu pastes into Command Search;
Quit RustGIS and ⌘Q with unsaved changes show "Save changes to World Atlas?", and Escape cancels;
Undo chosen while the Save panel was open didn't reach the app after cancelling.
Not checked by hand: the shortcut editor's recording (it needs mouse clicks in egui), and Windows/Linux, where the change is cfg'd out (CI builds them).
Independent review:
Two passes before the PR. The first found 10 issues, all fixed above; the second confirmed the fixes.
Two more passes on the follow-ups to the bot reviews, all fixed.
Follow-ups to the bot reviews, checked by hand: project Undo and Redo from the menu and from ⌘Z/⇧⌘Z, and Edit › Undo undoing typed text in Command Search.
CI:cargo xtask ci passes. The rustgis and rustgis-ui-egui tests and clippy pass again after the rebase. cargo-deny isn't installed here; the three new crates' licences are MIT/Apache-2.0, which deny.toml allows.
Added a native menu bar on macOS with app commands, editing actions, and keyboard shortcuts.
Menu items reflect command availability and are disabled while input is blocked.
Menu actions support clipboard operations and can trigger app commands.
Updates
Shortcuts reserved by the macOS menu bar can’t be assigned in shortcut settings. A notice explains rejected assignments and clears when shortcuts are added or reset.
Saved shortcuts that conflict with reserved menu shortcuts are removed from the active keymap.
On macOS the app had only winit's minimal menu (About, Hide, Quit), and its
Quit sent terminate:, so Cmd+Q ended RustGIS without asking to save. The app
now has a small native menu bar, built with muda: RustGIS (About, Check for
Updates, Settings, Services, Hide, Quit), File (New Project, Open, Add Data,
Save, Save As, Close Window), Edit (Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All),
View (the panes, Command Search, the ribbon, Enter Full Screen), Window and
Help (RustGIS Help, Keyboard Shortcuts, Report an Issue), with macOS's window
list and Help search.
Each item runs a command the app already has: File, View and Help items run
theirs as the ribbon does (asking to save first when one would replace the
project); Quit RustGIS and Close Window close the window, so the save prompt
asks; the Edit items arrive as their keys and clipboard events, so a focused
text field undoes, copies and pastes its own text as when typed. Shortcuts
are the keymap's (only those with Cmd), the menu is built again when the
language or a shown shortcut changes, items grey out as their commands do
and while a dialog has the keys, and labels are translated. The shortcut
editor refuses the keys the menu bar keeps (Cmd+Q, Cmd+W, Cmd+, Cmd+A, Cmd+H,
Alt+Cmd+H, Cmd+M), and while it records, the menu passes its keys to it. A
choice made while a native panel (a file dialog) has the keys is dropped,
so it doesn't reach the app once the panel closes.
winit's default menu is turned off through eframe's event_loop_builder.
New macOS-only dependency: muda (MIT or Apache-2.0), with crossbeam-channel
and keyboard-types; its unsafe code stays in the crate. Windows and Linux
are unchanged.

Walkthrough
The app adds a native menu bar on macOS and routes menu selections through existing commands or egui input events. Menu accelerators use keymap shortcuts, which the shortcut editor now protects from reassignment. Other platform behavior remains unchanged.

opengeos/RustGIS#966: The native Quit item routes through the app command path, while Dock and logout termination remain outside this change.
opengeos/RustGIS#562: The menu uses keymap shortcuts for accelerators and reserves menu shortcuts in the shortcut editor; other keymap objectives are not covered.
opengeos/RustGIS#906: The native menu Quit action routes through ui.quit; project-replacement paths are not changed.
Possibly related PRs
opengeos/RustGIS#945: Adds the save prompt used by the native menu’s command-based quit path.
opengeos/RustGIS#1004: Adds configurable shortcuts and capture state used by the native menu and shortcut editor.

Explanation
The changed files support issue #1077. menu.rs implements the native menus and tests. main.rs wires menu events, command execution, dialog blocking, and the replacement for winit's default menu. The ui-egui shortcut, reserved-shortcut, and translation changes support menu accelerators, command state, and labels. The muda dependency and license updates support the implementation. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Quality / doc mismatch (medium confidence). The PR text says items "grey out as their commands do", but enabling_command returns None for Keys actions, so Edit › Undo and Redo never grey out, even though edit.undo and edit.redo have a .when(can_undo) check in crates/engine/src/cmd/project.rs. Keeping them enabled may be deliberate, since a focused text field undoes its own text through this item. If so, the code and the PR description should say that, and a short comment should sit on this arm. If not, Keys { command, .. } => Some(command) would grey them out, but that would also disable text-field undo whenever the project has nothing to undo.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Deliberate, now said in the code (c5cbc24): Undo and Redo stay enabled because a focused text field undoes its own text even when the project has nothing to undo. The module header and the Keys doc say so, and the PR text no longer claims every item greys out.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
AGENTS.md (medium-low confidence). AGENTS.md says to wrap user-visible literals in tl!("…"). These labels are plain &str constants that go through i18n::tr_raw, so the maintainer's pass over tl! calls (docs/i18n.md) wouldn't pick them up. The lang parameter is why tl! isn't used directly, so a short comment noting the deliberate exception, or a helper that does tl!-style extraction, would make the choice visible.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Kept as plain &str on purpose: a const table can't call tl!, and the menu needs the labels in the menu's language and in logical order (i18n::tr_raw). Same pattern as UI_LABELS in keymap.rs. Since no tool scans for tl!, the doc comment on MENUS now says the labels go into the catalogs by hand (docs/i18n.md). (c5cbc24)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug, low severity (medium confidence). If MenuBar::new fails while a bar already exists, stale() stays true and the rebuild runs again on every frame, logging menu bar: … at warn each time. A failed build should probably wait for the next language or shortcut change, or log once.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in c5cbc24: the bar is built for a Signature (language and shown shortcuts). A failed build is remembered (Menus::tried) and only tried again once that signature changes; the old bar stays meanwhile.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nits, grouped).App is now a tuple, and the code reaches the menu state through self.2 in raw_input_hook and menus. Named fields such as menus: Menus would read more clearly. Also, #[allow(unused_mut)] let mut options and the _cc binding used only in the macOS branch are cfg workarounds that could be tidier. Each is small and none is a defect.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Leaving these: App was already a tuple struct upstream (App(app, held)), so self.2 follows it, and #[allow(unused_mut)] and _cc are the smallest cfg-gated forms. Happy to switch to named fields in a separate change if wanted.
Edit › Undo and Redo never grey out, although the PR says items grey out as their commands do. enabling_command returns None for Keys actions, and edit.undo has a can_undo check. Keeping them enabled may be deliberate so text fields can undo. If so, the PR text and a code comment should say so. (medium confidence, inline at apps/rustgis/src/menu.rs:296)
If MenuBar::new fails while a bar exists, the rebuild runs and logs a warning on every frame. (low severity, medium confidence, inline at apps/rustgis/src/main.rs:325)
Security
None found. The ui.learn URL is limited to http and https, the Paste path reads the clipboard only on the main thread, and the chosen-items mutex recovers from poisoning rather than panicking.
Performance
Minor: own_items allocates rustgis.{m}.{r} ids and recomputes shortcuts for every item on every frame, through stale() and follow(). Acceptable for about 30 items, so no action needed.
Quality
Grouped nits (inline at apps/rustgis/src/main.rs:18): the tuple App(…, Menus) with self.2 accesses would read better as named fields. The #[allow(unused_mut)] and the _cc binding used only on macOS are cfg workarounds.
AGENTS.md
Menu labels are plain &str constants passed to tr_raw, not wrapped in tl!. The maintainer's translation pass finds strings by tl!, so these labels would be missed. A comment noting the deliberate exception would help. (medium-low confidence, inline at apps/rustgis/src/menu.rs:70)
Checked and fine: no unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code. Shortcut editor recording uses a plain Window, so the menu isn't greyed out during recording. The tr_raw visibility change and the Chord, keys_for, apply_preferences and run_by_user uses match their signatures. The THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt changes are a reflow.
Not verified: I had no build or test tooling, so compilation, the new tests and the macOS behaviour are unchecked. The PR's own by-hand checklist covers the macOS behaviour.

AGENTS.md (translatable text), medium confidence. AGENTS.md asks that user-visible literals be wrapped in tl!("…"). These labels, and the t("Services")-style literals in std_item, are not: they are plain &str in a const table and go through i18n::tr_raw at runtime. A const can't call tl!, so this may be deliberate, but then extraction of the catalog entries needs to cover these strings or they stay English for every language. Worth confirming how the maintainer finds new strings before merge, or noting the exception in the PR.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Same as above: the labels are catalog keys translated at run time (tr_raw), like keymap.rs's UI_LABELS, and the doc on MENUS now says new ones go into the catalogs by hand. (c5cbc24)

Quality (doc accuracy), high confidence. The header says a native panel "gets no Edit items". It doesn't: follow() only greys items for blocked (a modal layer), so the Edit items stay enabled while a file dialog has the keys. What is actually dropped is the choice, in listen(). Suggested wording:

Fixed in c5cbc24 with that wording: while a native panel has the keys the items stay enabled but a choice is dropped (listen), and the panel's own text fields get no Edit items, as before the menu bar.
Overall the change is careful: no unwrap/unsafe in non-test code, the Edit items route through egui's own key and clipboard handling, and the menu-to-command mapping is covered by tests. I found no bugs that would crash or misbehave in normal use. The points below are documentation, convention and test-coverage items.
Bugs
None confirmed. I checked that every ui.* id in the menu exists (lib.rs and panes.rs), that saveprompt::close_requested covers Close Window as well as ⌘Q, that winit is already in Cargo.lock for rustgis so the lock diff is complete, and that let-chains are already used in the repo.
Security
None. Paste reads plain text only, and menu choices run the same commands as the ribbon.
Performance
Low. stale() builds a format! id for every menu item on every frame, and follow() calls command_enabled on every item each frame. Egui only redraws on events, so the cost is small. Hoisting the ids to a const or a cached list would remove the per-frame allocations. Confidence: low.
Quality
Inline: the header of menu.rs says a native panel "gets no Edit items". The Edit items stay enabled. Only the choice is dropped in listen(). Confidence: high.
Nits, not posted inline:
Built and Std are vague names.
main.rs binds _cc but then uses it.
#[allow(unused_mut)] plus a cfg block could be simpler.
The one-line label() wrapper around tr_raw adds little.
AGENTS.md
Inline: menu labels and the t("Services")-style literals are not wrapped in tl!. A const table cannot call tl!, so this is probably deliberate, but the PR should say how these strings reach the catalogs. Confidence: medium.
Tests
items_name_commands_that_exist skips the existence check for the ids in NOT_RUN (ui.open, ui.save, ui.saveAs, ui.addData, ui.quit, ui.checkUpdate). I confirmed they exist today, but a rename would go unnoticed. Confidence: low.

Make enabled Edit › Undo run edit.undo when the keymap gives ⌘Z to another command.
When ⌘Z belongs to another command, Edit › Undo shows no shortcut. Its click pushes no event, and the item stays enabled, so the click does nothing. Dispatch edit.undo from the menu click when no text field has focus. Do not press the other command's key. When a text field has focus, leave the click without effect, because text fields keep their own undo. Test that dispatch does not run while a modal layer is open.

shortcut_command drops shortcut.modifiers.ctrl. On macOS, Ctrl+T builds the same Chord as a bare T, so a bare T binding is returned for Ctrl+T. captured_chord already skips these chords on macOS, so shortcut_command should return None for them too.

Install the reserved keys before stored shortcuts load, and skip saved chords that match them.
On macOS, main.rs sets the reserved list after shortcut preferences load. A saved Mod+Q binding therefore stays in the keymap. The native Quit item uses the same key (Key::Q), so ⌘Q starts quit, not the saved command. The shortcut editor still lists the binding, and its × control is the only way to remove it.
Load runs inside with_services, so the list must be set before that call. with_services does not reset ui before it calls shortcutui::load, and menu::reserved() takes no arguments. Move the assignment ahead of with_services:
🐛 Suggested fix
- let mut app = app.with_services(services);+ #[cfg(target_os = "macos")]+ {+ app.ui.reserved_shortcuts = menu::reserved();+ }+ let mut app = app.with_services(services);
app.session.mark_saved();
- // The keys the macOS menu bar keeps: the shortcut editor refuses them.- #[cfg(target_os = "macos")]- {- app.ui.reserved_shortcuts = menu::reserved();- }
This edit needs app to be a mutable binding before with_services.
With the list in place first, skip stored chords that match it when preferences load. The filter point is not part of this diff. It depends on how Keymap::apply_preferences exposes its bindings and how readable affects overwriting stored text.

Add a non-executing recognition check for ui.addData and ui.checkUpdate.
items_name_commands_that_exist skips every ID in NOT_RUN. No test invokes ui.addData or ui.checkUpdate, so removing either dispatcher arm would not fail a test. ui.addData is also called outside tests at crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:812, where the result is discarded with let _ =. A removed arm would therefore fail silently on that path.
Do not run these commands in the test to confirm recognition. ui.addData opens a native file dialog, and ui.checkUpdate goes online.
A recognition check needs the set of recognized IDs to drive dispatch. Move the UI command IDs into a shared constant in crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, and have run_ui route through that same table. The test can then check the menu IDs against the table without executing them. A separate list that run_ui only consults would not show that a handler still exists, so the table must control dispatch.
Updating the doc comment at apps/rustgis/src/menu.rs:459-461 would not add this protection. The test's doc comment says every item runs a command that exists, which does not hold for these two IDs. The test code, not the comment, determines what is checked.

- Undo and Redo work as their keys do: a focused text field or
ModelBuilder's canvas takes Cmd+Z, the keymap the key it gives them;
with no key bound they run the command, quietly (no "nothing to undo").
- A menu command never takes Cmd+Z/Cmd+Y from text fields.
- One queued menu choice runs a frame, so one that opens Save changes?
stops the next; Close Window greys out behind a dialog too.
- A failed rebuild waits for the language or a shortcut to change.
- Cmd++ gets no menu key (a key code can't say "+"); a Ctrl-only key
matches no binding.
- The reserved keys are set before stored shortcuts load, which leave
out bindings on them.
- Comments: the module header on native panels, the label table's
translation, why Undo and Redo stay enabled.

On CodeRabbit's three follow-ups from its review summary, all addressed in c5cbc24:
Undo when ⌘Z belongs to another command: Edit › Undo shows no key then. Outside a text field it runs edit.undo directly and never the other command. In a text field it presses ⌘Z, which the keymap leaves to the field (is_text_undo), so the field undoes. Behind a dialog the choice is dropped.
Ctrl-only shortcuts:RustGisApp::shortcut_command now returns None for Ctrl without ⌘, so ⌃T doesn't match a bare T binding. Tested in shortcutui.
Reserved keys: they're set before with_services (which loads the stored shortcuts), and shortcutui::load leaves out stored bindings on them. Tested with a stored ⌘Q binding.

Likely build failure on Linux and Windows (clippy -D warnings). The third field of App is only read inside #[cfg(target_os = "macos")] code (App::menus, raw_input_hook, and the held/menus setup), so on other platforms rustc should report field 2 is never read. Menus is a struct Menus {} on those platforms, so nothing reads it. Confidence about 70%: I checked by reading the code, not by building.
Small fix: allow dead code on that field only where the menu is compiled out:

Checked: no warning. On other platforms Menus is struct Menus {} (0f2b536); a never-read tuple field of that type gives no dead_code warning (tried in a scratch crate), and the Linux Lint (pre-commit) job, which runs clippy with -D warnings, passed on c5cbc24.

Per-frame cost (performance, about 50% confidence).menu::signature runs every frame, and it rebuilds every item id (format!), looks up every shortcut through shortcuts_of/keys_for, and collects them into a Vec. bar.follow then calls command_enabled (widgets::enabled) for about 25 commands each frame. Both are cheap alone, but they run on every repaint, including idle ones. A fix could cache the signature and recompute it only when the keymap or language changes (the keymap already has a fingerprint, per the comment on RustGisApp::command_keys), and throttle follow to when the enabled state can change.

Agreed, fixed in ae6131d. The signature (item ids, shortcuts) is now taken only when the language or the keymap's fingerprint changes. The fingerprint now also covers what each key runs (command and parameters, hashed without allocating), so a key rebound to another command still triggers it. follow stays per frame: about 20 command_enabled lookups, since enabled state depends on session state that has no single change counter.

Menu choices can be dropped silently (about 30% confidence). When a key window exists but mainWindow is nil, panel_has_keys returns true, and listen then discards the choice. If AppKit reports a nil main window for the app's own window in some states (it can happen when the app is not active or during a sheet), a user's Save or Undo from the menu would be lost with no log. Worth confirming on macOS, or at least logging when a choice is dropped. If this case is not needed, (Some(_), None) => false would be the safer default.

Agreed, fixed in ae6131d: panel_has_keys now drops a choice only when both a key and a main window exist and differ (a native panel). With either missing, the choice is kept rather than lost.

AGENTS.md: translatable text (about 40% confidence this is a violation, soft because of the precedent). AGENTS.md says to wrap user-visible literals in tl!("…"). The menu labels instead go through label(lang, …) and are passed as catalog keys. The stated reason is that tl! can't be used in a const, and keymap.rs already does this with UI_LABELS, so the approach matches existing practice. The gap is that label calls the lookup at runtime, and the menu's strings (including std_item's t("Services") etc.) aren't visible to tl!-based extraction. Please confirm that docs/i18n.md's extraction picks up UI_LABELS-style keys, or add these to the same list, so the maintainer's translation pass includes them.

Same as the earlier thread: a const table can't call tl!, and the menu needs labels in its own language and in logical order (i18n::tr_raw), as keymap.rs's UI_LABELS are. The doc comment on MENUS says new labels go into the catalogs by hand (docs/i18n.md).
I read the full diff, AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code. I did not build or run the tests, so findings below are from reading only. I posted four inline comments and left the nits here.
Bugs
apps/rustgis/src/main.rs:18: App's third field (Menus) is only read in macOS-only code. On Linux and Windows it is probably a dead_code warning ("field 2 is never read"), which would fail clippy -D warnings in CI. Suggested cfg_attr(… allow(dead_code)) fix is in the comment. Confidence about 70%, from reading only.
apps/rustgis/src/menu.rs:444: panel_has_keys returns true when there is a key window but no main window, so the menu choice is dropped with no log. Confidence about 30%.
Performance
apps/rustgis/src/main.rs:337: menu::signature and bar.follow run every frame and rebuild item ids, shortcut lookups, and enabled state for about 40 items. Caching on keymap or language change would fix it. Confidence about 50%.
Quality
Nit: the chord closure in shortcut() (menu.rs:177) duplicates the construction in text_key. Pulling it into a free function would remove the duplication.
Nit: the shortcutui test wraps a &'static str in Rc for no reason.
Nit: main.rs rebinds app in a block just to make it mut. let mut app = app; at the top of main would be clearer.
AGENTS.md
apps/rustgis/src/menu.rs:74: menu labels use label(lang, …) instead of tl!. The reason (a const can't call tl!) is sound, and keymap.rs's UI_LABELS does the same, so this is soft. Confidence about 40%. Please confirm the i18n extraction picks these keys up.
Checked and found fine
The shortcut editor's conflict modal and the menu's blocked logic are consistent with each other.
shortcutui::load runs in with_services, after reserved_shortcuts is set in main, so the reserved-key filter applies before stored shortcuts load.
No unwrap, expect, or panic in the non-test code of the new files. Lock poisoning is handled with unwrap_or_else.
The menu.rs code is macOS-only and does not affect the wasm build.
New dependencies (muda, keyboard-types, crossbeam-channel) are MIT or Apache-2.0.
