fix(labels): name locked labels by feature id, so a lock holds through edits that move rows - #1134
A label lock named each label by its layer, row, class and repeat. For in-memory layers the row was the feature's position in the dataset, so any edit that moves rows broke the lock. Deleting a feature shifts every later row up by one. After that, locked labels showed on other features: a label left out when the lock was taken appeared, and one that was placed disappeared. Streamed layers already used the feature id.
Now every label is named by its feature's id (LabelKey keeps its shape: the second field is the feature id). A lock therefore holds through deletes, cuts, undo and reloads. It also holds with the other places round a point from #1025, because the place a label won stays with its feature.
render: one label_id for all layers, used both for the per-class lock check and for each label's key.
raise_labels reads an extruded feature's height from the row the label was offered from, while the feature there still has the key's id; otherwise it looks the id up (an id → row map, built once per layer per call). A tilted view's labels then rise by their own feature's height after rows move.
service_group: a reloaded group still drops its layers' locked labels; only the comment changes (the new features are numbered afresh).
Testing
cargo xtask ci. Locally, duckdb_queries_and_databases fails; it is unrelated (it fails on main with DuckDB installed, and Linux CI has no DuckDB). So I also ran cargo test -p rustgis-plugins -p rustgis-ui-egui -q and cargo xtask layers, which pass.
New engine test locked_labels_stay_with_their_features_when_rows_move: three points on one spot where only the first label fits. It locks, deletes the first feature, and checks that no label shows (Beta's wasn't placed when the lock was taken). Unlocked, Beta's label fits, and it is locked in turn.
New render test labels_rise_by_their_own_features_height: after a delete, an extruded feature's label rises by its own feature's height, not by the feature now at its old row.
Note: #1128 also builds label keys in crates/render/src/lib.rs. Whichever lands second should use label_id(row) for the key's feature.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Label locks stay associated with the same features when edits or deletions change their row positions, preventing locks from unexpectedly applying to other features. After a feature is deleted, other features’ labels can be placed and locked as expected.
Label locks for complete-source features now use feature IDs instead of row positions. Candidates retain their offered rows, and label elevation lookup validates those rows against feature IDs. Tests cover behavior after feature deletion and row movement.
Changes: Label lock identity and rendering
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Use feature IDs for label-lock identity crates/map/src/symbology.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/service_group.rs
Label keys and lock matching use feature IDs for complete-source features. The documentation and refresh comment describe this identity.
Resolve offered rows for label elevation crates/render/src/lib.rs
Candidates retain their offered row. raise_labels uses it when it matches the keyed feature ID, or looks up the feature by ID. Tests cover candidates with and without rows and cases where rows shift.
Test locked labels after feature deletion crates/engine/src/tests.rs
A test checks that deleting a feature does not transfer its locked label to another feature, and that unlocking and relocking places the remaining feature’s label.
opengeos/RustGIS#1135 describes an ID-reuse case in the same label-lock behavior. This change uses feature IDs but does not prevent a new feature from matching a retained lock entry.

Feature-based locks address row movement, but browser layers with IDs differing by 2^32 can still share a lock identity. Mergeability risk is low with explicit acceptance of this narrow limitation and its planned follow-up.

Explanation
The PR fixes row movement for normal in-memory edits. render uses feature IDs for lock matching and LabelKey, and the added tests cover deletion and extrusion height. However, #1046 includes reload paths and requires locks to remain with surviving features. crates/engine/src/cmd/service_group.rs still removes all lock entries for a refreshed child and states that new features receive new IDs. This makes a refresh drop labels for surviving features, not only for deleted features.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
Feature ids can be reused. Dataset::push assigns max(id) + 1, so deleting the highest-id feature and then pushing a new one gives the new feature the old id. A stale lock key then applies to it. Confidence: medium-low (~50%). Inline comment posted at crates/render/src/lib.rs:3719.
Performance
raise_labels rebuilds an id → row map for a layer on every frame whose ids aren't row + 1. That covers every layer after a delete, and every GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf, PostGIS or MySQL layer that keeps file-supplied ids. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted at crates/render/src/lib.rs:2307, with the option of carrying the row through Candidate.
Security
Nothing found. The new row lookup uses get(), and extrusion_metres goes through Dataset::value, which also uses get(), so the usize::MAX fallback is safe.
Quality
Nit: the [fid.wrapping_sub(1), *fid] probe with the usize::MAX sentinel is subtle. A small named helper such as row_of(features, fid) would make the intent clearer. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Compliant. No unwrap, expect or indexing is added in non-test code, both new behaviours have regression tests, there are no new dependencies, no user-visible strings and no wasm-specific code.
I could not compile or run the tests here (no shell). The tests were checked by reading: the engine test and the render test would each fail on the old row-keyed code.

PR #1134 keys locked labels by feature id instead of row. The change is sound: the render, service-group and engine-test paths agree on the id key, and the new tests match the behaviour they describe. I found no bugs that would break the current behaviour. Two inline comments cover the residual concerns below.
Bugs
Feature ids come from Dataset::push as max+1 (crates/data/src/lib.rs:340). After the highest-id feature is deleted, the next feature pushed or pasted reuses that id and inherits its lock entry, so its label is drawn without a placement check. The old row key had the same problem, so this is not a regression. Confidence: medium-low (~35%). Inline comment posted.
Security
None found.
Performance
For streamed extruded layers in a tilted view, the row hint misses and raise_labels builds an id→row map over the layer's view window on every frame. Confidence: low (~30%). I have not confirmed that these layers reach this path. Inline comment posted.
Quality
Nit: f.id as usize truncates on wasm32 (rustgis-web), so two ids that differ by a multiple of 2^32 could collide. The key was already usize for streamed layers, and this change extends the id keying to all layers. Confidence: low.
Nit: the render test covers the delete-and-relock path but not undo. Undo re-pushes the feature at the end with its original id, which the lock should survive. Adding an undo assertion to locked_labels_stay_with_their_features_when_rows_move would cover it. Confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The diff adds no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe. It uses get() for indexing. The new tests use unwrap(), which is allowed in test code. The rustfmt width (140) appears respected by the long lines I checked, but I did not run rustfmt, clippy or the test suite.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base ed578f0 to PR head 0d5a23a).
Lock can attach to a new feature after deleting the highest id (medium-low confidence). Dataset::push assigns max + 1, so deleting the highest-id feature and then adding one reuses that id. edit::delete does not prune label_lock, so the new feature's label can show even though it was not placed when the lock was taken. The same symptom as [Bug]: Locked labels move to other features after features are deleted or a layer's rows change #1046 survives in this narrow case. Inline comment posted at crates/render/src/lib.rs:3721, with a suggested regression test.
Security

Performance
The fallback in raise_labels builds an id→row map over the whole layer each frame whenever the offered row misses. This is most likely for streamed layers (low confidence on the cost). Covered in the inline comment at crates/render/src/lib.rs:2306.
Quality
PR description does not match the code (high confidence). It says raise_labels tries row = id - 1 first. The code tries the offered row first and checks its id. The code is the correct version, so the description should be updated. Inline comment posted at crates/render/src/lib.rs:2306.
f.id as usize truncates a u64 on wasm32, where usize is 32-bit. This matches the existing streamed-layer behaviour and is only a risk above 2^32 ids (low confidence).
The Candidate struct gained a row hint, and the tests build candidates by hand with row: 0. This is readable, and the test for the rising label covers the fallback path.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The new code avoids unwrap/expect and indexing. The changed tests use unwrap only in test code. No new dependencies, assets, or UI text.
Test coverage
locked_labels_stay_with_their_features_when_rows_move fails on the old row-keyed code, so it does test the fix.
labels_rise_by_their_own_features_height covers the fallback.
Missing: a test for the id-reuse case described above.

Key label locks by the full feature ID, not a truncated usize.
On 32-bit targets, f.id as usize truncates the u64 ID. Features 1 and 4294967297 then share one LabelKey. Locking the first feature also admits the second feature's label, which was not placed when the lock was taken. Change the key's ID component to u64 in LabelKey (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:2353) and in label_id (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3293).
Note: the same truncation already applies to complete sources at the base. This change extends it to sources without source.

@coderabbitai On the usize truncation on wasm32: confirmed, and as you note it already applied to streamed layers. It only matters for ids at or above 2^32 in the browser. Widening LabelKey's id to u64 changes a contract shared by the lock, the tilted dedup, tile labels and tests, so I'll leave it out of this fix and add it to the follow-up issue for id reuse.
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.
@jgregoriorincon Agreed. Keeping the u64 migration in the ID-reuse follow-up is reasonable. The wasm32 truncation risk remains for feature IDs at or above 2^32.
The follow-up should cover all LabelKey consumers together and include regression coverage around the 2^32 boundary.

Possible stale lock after a delete and an add (confidence: medium, about 65%). The key now relies on feature ids being stable and never reused while a lock is held. Dataset::push (crates/data/src/lib.rs:339-342) assigns max(existing ids) + 1, so when the feature with the highest id is deleted, the next feature added (edit.rs:63 uses push) gets that same id. The new feature then inherits the deleted feature's lock keys: its label is drawn or suppressed according to the old lock, which is the same symptom as #1046. The new test only deletes row 0 (id 1), so it doesn't cover this.
A possible fix is a monotonic high-water mark on Dataset (for example next_id, serde-defaulted to the current max), so ids are never reused within a dataset. Alternatively, drop the lock whenever a feature is deleted. A regression test would be: lock with the last feature's label placed, delete it, add a new feature, then check that the new feature's label follows the unlocked placement.
Possible stale lock after a delete and then an add (medium confidence, about 65%). Dataset::push assigns max(existing ids) + 1, so deleting the highest-id feature and then adding one reuses that id. The new feature inherits the old lock keys. Inline comment posted at crates/render/src/lib.rs:3302.
Security
None found. The change only touches label keys and rendering.
Performance
None significant. label_id is O(1). The per-layer id→row map in raise_labels is built only when the row hint misses, which does not happen for in-memory layers within a frame.
Quality
Nit (low confidence): service_group.rs:298 says "the new ones are numbered afresh", but a refresh from a source with stable ids may keep the same ids. The retain is still correct, so the comment could just say the features are re-read.
Nit (low confidence): f.id as usize in raise_labels (render/src/lib.rs around line 2310) truncates u64 ids on wasm32. The old streamed-layer path already did this, and the change extends it to in-memory layers. Ids from push are small, so the practical impact is minimal.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. There are no new unwrap/expect/unsafe calls in non-test code, no new user-visible strings, no new dependencies, and no layering changes. Regression tests are included. Lines appear to fit max_width = 140, but I could not run cargo fmt or the tests in this environment.
Verified
label_lock is #[serde(skip)], so there is no persistence migration concern.
Streamed layers behave as before, since label_id matches the old label_row on that path.
Clipboard paste uses max + 1, so it does not collide with existing ids.
extrusion_metres uses ds.value, which is safe with usize::MAX.

Use the chunk feature's extruded height for streamed labels.
2309-2318: Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff
Use the chunk feature's extruded height for streamed labels.
When a streamed extruded feature is absent from the stored window, raise_labels lifts its label by the configured fallback height, which is 0 by default. The label then stays near ground, under its extrusion, instead of on the roof. Carry the chunk feature's extruded height with each candidate, and use it in place of the stored-row lookup.
Scope of the defect
The window is a sample only when more features match than VIEW_LIMIT. A complete window holds every feature, so the defect requires a sampled window. The chunk read and the stored window use different feature sets.

Update the streamed-label candidate flow around row resolution and raise_labels
to carry each chunk feature’s extruded height, then use that height for label
placement instead of relying on effects::extrusion_metres with the stored-window
row. Preserve the existing stored-row behavior for candidates without a
chunk-provided height.
Assert the lock state when an unlabelled row before a locked label is deleted.
Assert the lock state when an unlabelled row before a locked label is deleted.
The new test deletes Alpha, the locked feature itself. No test deletes an earlier row that has no label while a locked label survives. A regression that clears the lock only in that case would not fail this test.
Asserting that the surviving label is still visible may not catch that regression. If the lock were cleared, the surviving label could still be placed first, so its visibility would not change. Assert the lock state directly, as the existing lock tests do with s.map().label_lock.is_some() and is_none().
Add a case where a feature without a label comes before the locked label. After deleting that feature, assert that label_lock is still Some and that the surviving label is still drawn.

Update the lock-deletion test around `s.run("edit.delete", ...)` to delete an
unlabelled feature that precedes a locked label; assert
`s.map().label_lock.is_some()` afterward and verify the surviving label is still
drawn.
