Summary

Three labelling options for vector layers, modelled on QGIS. QGIS import still reports label callouts as skipped: @pick2510 will map them onto these settings in a follow-up under #882.

Show all labels (per label class)

Every label is drawn, over the others where they crowd, instead of some being left out. It sets Collide::text_allow_overlap for the class's labels, the mechanism vector-tile styles already used.

Callouts (per label class, with a longest line)

A label crowded off its spot moves to a free spot nearby, and a line is drawn from its feature to the text.

  • Order of attempts: its own place first, then upstream's alternatives round a point ([Feature]: Point labels try other positions around the point when the chosen one collides #1011). Only if none of those fits does it search further out.
  • The search (callout_spot) works outwards in rings for the nearest spot that:
    • is free;
    • is inside the view;
    • doesn't cover the feature;
    • has a line from the feature to the text's nearest edge no longer than the class's at most (5–500 pt, 40 by default).
  • If nothing fits: the label is left out, or with Show all labels it's drawn in its own place over the others.
  • Cost: capped at MAX_CALLOUT_SEARCHES (500) labels per placement.
  • Drawing: the line is drawn by both renderers (text::draw and the map view's draw_label) in the label's colour over its halo. So it shows on screen, in PNG/PDF exports and in layouts.
  • Spots tried: capped at MAX_CALLOUT_SPOTS (200,000) across a placement's searches.
  • Lock: a lock keeps how far a callout moved a label (LockedPlace), so a locked label stays there with its line.
  • Labels along lines (parallel or curved) aren't moved.

Move Label tool (as QGIS's)

Labeling tab › Label Placement › Move Label (tool moveLabel): drag a label to where it should be.

  • Storage: kept per class in LabelClass::moved as {id: feature id, at: [lon, lat]}, saved with the project, at most 10,000. Kept in order of id. File input is read leniently: bad or out-of-range entries are dropped and a feature's last entry wins.
  • Drawing: drawn through the map's projection, as its feature is, also when its feature is out of view.
  • Placement: pinned (Collide::pinned). It goes first, is shown whatever is under it, the other labels keep off it, and it never tries alternatives.
  • Callout line: with Callouts on, it gets a line back to its feature however far it went. While dragging, the preview's line follows it (render::callout_to).
  • Cancelling: Esc, another tool, or another map or project shown during a drag leaves the label where it was.
  • Putting labels back: Shift-click puts a moved one back; Reset Moved puts back all of the layer's.
  • Convert To Annotation: a moved label's annotation is at the place it was put, and stays moved there under its new id.

How it's wired

Each label carries its callout and what it labels (layer id, feature id, label class) in rustgis_tiles::Collide, which every PlacedLabel already has and both renderers draw from. That way the ~50 places that build a PlacedLabel didn't need changing. The Move Label tool finds the label under the pointer with the new render::label_extent.

Commands

  • labels.placement takes "showAll": bool and "callout": true | false | points (true keeps the length; false, 0 or null turns callouts off).
  • New labels.move {"layer"?, "class"?, "feature": id, "to": [lon, lat] | null} and labels.resetMoved {"layer"?, "class"?, "all"?}. Each is one undo step.

Merge with main

This branch merges current main, including the placement rewrite with alternatives (#1011). Callouts and pinned labels were folded into the new loop: a callout only searches once the label's own place and its alternatives are all taken. The feature point for its line is taken from the label's original place.

Docs: Show all labels, Callouts and Move Label entries in the cartography guide's Labeling section.

Testing

  • New and extended tests cover:
    • map: moving and putting back, out-of-range places, reading unordered and very long lists.
    • render: moved labels with their feature out of view, long callouts and the spot budget, callout lines on turned and tilted maps, and a lock keeping a callout's move. The lock and turned-map tests failed before their fixes.
    • engine: labels.move, labels.resetMoved (a bad all, a named class), relocking, converting moved labels, and a project file's callout of 0.
    • UI: a real drag with Esc, a kept move, and Shift-click on moved and unmoved labels.
  • cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy, all workspace tests, layers) passes on macOS (M2) on this branch's head.
  • Tried by hand in the desktop app before the review fixes: both options on crowded Cities labels, dragging labels with and without callouts, Shift-click and Reset Moved. The later fixes were checked by tests and the screenshots below.
  • Not covered by a test: the callout line scaling during a flat map's zoom, grabbing a label while the map moves, the message on a failed drop, and dropping deleted features' moves at the limit.

UI evidence

Callouts on crowded labels (Vatican City, Bratislava, Skopje), with the new options in the Labeling pane:

Callouts and the new Labeling pane options

Madrid's label dragged with Move Label, its line following it, with the ribbon's Move Label and Reset Moved:

A label moved with Move Label

Project format

LabelClass gains optional show_all, callout and moved, saved with the project. Older projects still open. CONTRIBUTING asks to coordinate this kind of change first, and I didn't, so this needs a maintainer's OK.

Three label options, as QGIS has them:

- Show all labels (per class): every label is drawn, over the others
  where they crowd, rather than some left out.
- Callouts (per class, with a longest line, 5 to 500 points): a label
  crowded off its spot moves to the nearest free spot whose line back
  to its feature is that short at most, searched out in rings, inside
  the view and off the feature; the line is drawn from the feature to
  the text's nearest edge in the label's colour, over its halo, in the
  map view and in exports. With Show all labels too, a free spot nearby
  comes before overlapping. Labels along lines aren't moved.
- Move Label (a map tool, Labeling tab › Label Placement): drag a label
  to where it should be. It's kept by its feature's id in longitude and
  latitude (LabelClass::moved, saved with the project), drawn through
  the map's projection as its feature is, placed first and over what's
  under it, and given a callout's line however far it went when its
  class has callouts. Shift-click puts one back; Reset Moved puts back
  a layer's.

Labels carry their callout and what they label (layer, feature, class)
in rustgis_tiles::Collide, which both renderers draw from. Commands:
labels.placement takes "showAll" and "callout"; labels.move and
labels.resetMoved are new; the tool is "moveLabel".

in the target layer before calling move_label; use the appropriate membership
check for streamed layers rather than relying on a materialized-layer lookup.
- Around line 217-225: Update the `live`-based pruning in the `with_labels`
closure so `c.moved.retain` runs only for non-windowed layers; do not remove
saved moves just because their feature IDs are absent from the current
`dataset.features` window. Preserve the cap behavior so a move at the limit
fails rather than discarding saved positions.

Review comments at @crates/map/src/symbology.rs:
- Around line 1890-1891: Add lenient deserialization to the show_all field by
reusing de_flag, so invalid non-boolean values default to false without failing

- Around line 1900-1901: Update how LabelClass::moved identifies saved label
positions so source replacement cannot apply a previous feature’s position to a
different feature that reuses its ID; use a stable feature identity while
preserving moves for relinked data, or explicitly document and enforce that
feature IDs remain stable across replacement.
- Around line 1927-1930: Update de_moved to deserialize the moved value with a
serde visitor that reads array entries one at a time via next_element, rather
than buffering the full array as serde_json::Value. Preserve the existing
per-entry order: skip null or invalid MovedLabel entries and entries where
is_label_place is false, then insert only if the ID is already present or by_id
is below MAX_MOVED_LABELS. Keep duplicate-ID replacement and
first-10,000-distinct-ID behavior; return an empty list for non-array values,
including null, and consume map values so the outer document still parses.

Review comments at @crates/render/src/lib.rs:
- Around line 3808-3810: Update the show-all comment near `text_allow_overlap`
to clarify that labels beyond the 20,000 highest-priority candidates in a view
are not placed or drawn; remove the claim that every crowded label is drawn.
- Around line 4771-4782: In the locked callout-restoration branch, gate the
feature used by callout_line on c.callout_reach being greater than zero so
disabling class callouts also hides the restored line. Locate the branch by
moved_by and preserve the existing pinned-branch behavior.
- Around line 4771-4777: Update place_labels to include saved callout
displacement in offset_reach for labels locked after a callout move, so the
feature prefilter retains them. In the candidate selection flow, apply the saved
offset to text and icon boxes before the outside-view check; limit both changes
to locked labels with a saved callout offset.

Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:
- Around line 1499-1507: Update label_at so it returns no label when the cached
labels belong to an older map revision than the current map, preventing stale
labels from starting a drag. Alternatively, clear the cached labels before
interact runs when the map revision changes.

Explanation

The title "feat(labels): callouts, show all labels, and a Move Label tool" matches the main changes in the changeset. The summaries cover all three named features: the show_all placement option, callout placement and drawing, and the labels.move and labels.resetMoved commands with the Move Label tool. The title is concise and specific, and it follows a conventional commit style. It does not mention the project-format fields or the callout-search budget, which is acceptable because it need not cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's required sections. It has a Summary section that explains what the change does and why, with three labelling options and wiring notes. It has a Testing section that lists new tests by crate and reports that cargo xtask ci passes. It has a UI evidence section with screenshots of the callouts and the Move Label tool. It has a Related issue section that says 'None' and also references #882 and #1011. It adds a Project format section and a Merge with main section, which the template does not require. Its main gap is that the Related issue section states 'None' while the body refers to related issues, which could confuse reviewers, but the required information is present.

Misplaced doc comment (quality, high confidence). The new labels_are_moved_by_command_and_reset test is inserted between the halo test's doc comment (lines 2348–2349) and that test. The doc now describes the new test, and labels_take_a_halo_colour_and_width_and_letter_spacing (further down) loses its doc. Move the new test block so it sits above or below the halo test with its own doc comments intact.

Misplaced doc comment (quality, high confidence). The three-line doc for label_classes_label_their_features (#732) now sits above the new a_label_moved_by_hand_is_drawn_where_it_was_put test, and label_classes_label_their_features (about line 5551) has lost it. Put the new test's doc block above its own #[test], and restore the original doc above label_classes_label_their_features.

Quadratic de-duplication on load (performance / hostile input, medium confidence). out.iter_mut().find(...) scans up to MAX_MOVED_LABELS entries for every entry in the file, and all is not capped before this loop. A project file with a large moved array (for example 10⁶ entries) costs about 10¹⁰ comparisons on open. AGENTS.md asks for bounded work on file input. Keep an id → index map so each entry is O(1). This also uses get_mut rather than indexing:

Linear scan per label on every frame (performance, medium-low confidence). class.moved_to(id) scans the class's whole moved list, and it runs for every feature label on every repaint, not only for moved ones. With 10,000 moved labels and 20,000 labels in view, that's about 2×10⁸ comparisons per frame. Consider a per-class id → place index built when the labels change, or a sorted list with binary search.

Code review

I read the full diff against the base branch and checked the surrounding code for placement, callouts, the Move Label path, and the command validation. I did not build or run the tests (no shell execution was used for this review), so the findings below come from reading the code.

Bugs

  • Esc mid-drag doesn't cancel a label move. Esc switches the tool to Explore, but DragKind::Label and moving_label survive, so releasing the mouse still commits labels.move. The overlay says "Esc to stop". (mapview.rs near 1065; low confidence, minor.)
  • Callout line missing for moved polygon and line labels. callout_anchor is set only for point features (point.is_some()), so a moved polygon or line label gets no line back to its feature even with callouts on. The docs say "its line follows it back to its feature". (render/src/lib.rs ~3714; medium confidence, depends on how point is set.)

Security

  • None found. Command inputs (labels.move, labels.placement) are validated: finite numbers, lon/lat ranges, and clamped callout reach. File input for moved is read leniently.

Performance

  • Quadratic de-duplication when a project file loads (medium confidence). The iter_mut().find in de_moved scans up to 10,000 entries for each entry in the file, and the file's array is not capped first. A large file can take seconds to open. Inline suggestion posted.
  • Linear scan per label per frame (medium-low confidence). moved_to scans the class's moved list for every feature label on every repaint. Inline comment posted.
  • The callout search is bounded (500 searches per placement, up to 60 rings and 64 directions each), so it is acceptable but worth a benchmark on dense views. Low confidence.

Quality

  • Two misplaced doc comments (high confidence). The new tests were inserted between existing doc comments and their tests, so labels_take_a_halo_colour_and_width_and_letter_spacing and label_classes_label_their_features now have no doc. Inline comments posted.
  • Same extent fold written three times in label_extent, callout_line and callout_spot (render/lib.rs, around 4502, 4519, 4540). A shared helper would remove the repetition.
  • Untranslated unit. .suffix(" pt") in labelpane.rs is a literal; "pt" is user-visible, so it should be wrapped or formatted with tl!/i18n::fmt.

AGENTS.md

  • No screenshots (high confidence). AGENTS.md asks for screenshots in the PR for substantial visible changes. This PR adds callouts, a drag preview, a new Labeling-pane section and two ribbon buttons, and the description has none.
  • No linked issue or proposal (medium-high confidence). CONTRIBUTING.md asks for coordination first when a change alters the .rgis project format or an existing command's parameters. This PR adds showAll, callout, moved to the saved LabelClass and new parameters to labels.placement. The PR says "Related issue: None".
  • Never-crash rules look met: no unwrap/expect/indexing in non-test code, and the new tests use get/.ok() where it matters.

Thanks for this. A few notes from the QGIS import side (tracking issue #882) and the label engine (#995):

  1. QGIS callouts are still reported as skipped. The description says import used to report label callouts as skipped, but this PR only adds show_all: false, callout: None and empty moved to the classes the importer builds (crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs). labels.rs:453 still reports label callouts, and qgis/tests.rs:731 still expects it. That's fine for this PR, but the description could say so. Once this is merged I'll map QGIS's simple callouts (and its "show all labels") onto the new settings as a piece of Tracking: QGIS project and style import parity #882. I'll leave the importer to that follow-up, so we don't both change it.
  2. Overlap with [Feature]: Label placement: candidate positions, conflicts, obstacles and fitting #995. callout_spot and Collide::pinned add placement logic: searching nearby spots, and labels that go first and that others avoid. [Feature]: Label placement: candidate positions, conflicts, obstacles and fitting #995 (candidate positions, conflicts, obstacles) is being built on the same placement code. @jgregoriorincon, could you check that these fit your step 1 and 2 design (candidate order, pinned labels as obstacles), so the two don't diverge?
  3. Project format. show_all, callout and moved are saved with the project. Per CONTRIBUTING, project-format changes are coordinated first, so it's worth a maintainer's nod. They're optional fields, so older projects still open.

crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1950-1956
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject out-of-range coordinates in move_label.

move_label accepts any finite at, but the labels.move command also requires longitude within ±540 and latitude within ±90. A direct call or a project file can store [1000, 95]. On bounded projections the renderer then drops the move and draws the label at its default position, while the move record stays saved.

🐛 Suggested fix
-            Some(at) if !at.iter().all(|v| v.is_finite()) => false,
+            Some(at) if !(at[0].is_finite() && at[1].is_finite() && at[0].abs() <= 540.0 && at[1].abs() <= 90.0) => false,

Apply the same range test to the filter in de_moved, so project files follow the same rule.

Heads-up, @huzaifffa: #1134 (fixes #1046) touches the same line in crates/render/src/lib.rs. It changes label_row(row) to label_id(row) in the label key, so a lock names each label by its feature's id for every layer, not by its row in memory. Whichever of the two lands second has a one-line conflict there.

It also fits with this PR: moved already keeps hand-moved labels by feature id. With #1134, the lock does the same. On main today the lock uses the row for in-memory layers, so after a delete with the lock on, a hand-moved label and its lock entry could point at different features.

Thanks for the heads-up, @jgregoriorincon! I test-merged #1134 into this branch: it merges cleanly now, and the render tests all pass with both. Naming labels by feature id lines up with how moved labels are stored, so the two fit together. If either lands first and a conflict appears, I'll update this branch.

- Esc, another tool, or another map or project mid-drag cancels a label move.
- A label moved into view is drawn when its feature is out of view (point or
  along-line), with its callout line back to the feature.
- Long callouts: the ring search spaces out to reach the full length.
- Shift-click puts back only moved labels.
- A drag keeps its class name, map and project from when it started.
- labels.move and labels.resetMoved relock the labels; resetMoved refuses a
  non-boolean "all".
- labels.convert puts a moved label's annotation where it was put and keeps
  no moves on the annotations' classes.
- Moved places are range-checked (±540 lon, ±90 lat) in files and commands.
- Moved labels kept in order of id: binary search per label, O(n log n) load.
- Terrain/extrusion lift a callout's feature end at its own place.
- While a globe or tilted map moves, callout lines stay on their features;
  labels can be grabbed while a flat map moves.
- Doc comments back on their tests; shared extent helper.

Thanks for the reviews. 98ea58b addresses them:

  • Move Label drag: Esc, another tool, or switching map or project mid-drag now cancels it. The drag keeps its class name, map and project from when it started. Shift-click only puts back labels that were moved. Labels can be grabbed while a flat map is still moving.
  • Drawing: a label moved into view is drawn even when its feature (a point, or a line labelled along it) is out of view, with its callout line reaching back. Long callouts now search out to their full length. When terrain or an extrusion lifts a label, the feature end of its line is lifted at its own place. While a globe or tilted map moves, callout lines stay on their features.
  • Commands: labels.move and labels.resetMoved relock the labels when the lock is on. resetMoved refuses a non-boolean all. labels.convert puts a moved label's annotation where it was put and keeps no moves on the annotation classes.
  • Data: moved places are range-checked (±540 longitude, ±90 latitude) in commands and project files. The list is kept sorted by feature id, so lookup is a binary search and loading is O(n log n).
  • Quality: the doc comments are back on their tests, and the extent fold is a shared helper.
  • Not changed: the " pt" suffix. The Labeling pane's other point fields already use the same untranslated suffix, so I kept it consistent. Happy to wrap all of them if you'd like.
  • Tests: new tests cover moved labels with off-screen features, the long callout search, a UI drag with Esc, keep and Shift-click, and lock, strict all and convert in the engine. Clippy is clean, and the map and render tests pass.
  • Coordination: QGIS callout import stays for @pick2510's follow-up in Tracking: QGIS project and style import parity #882. The new LabelClass fields are optional, so older projects still open. @giswqs, could you confirm you're OK with those project-format additions?

Bug (low): a project file with "callout": 0 (or a negative number) turns callouts on at the 5 pt minimum, because callout_reach(0.0) clamps to Some(5.0). The command treats 0 as off, so a file should too. The serializer never writes 0, so this only hits hand-edited files.

Quality (nit): de_moved keeps the first MAX_MOVED_LABELS distinct ids in file order and drops the rest. It does not keep "the most", so this comment and the test's name/intent are misleading. Suggest: "A huge list reads quickly, and keeps the first ones in the file." Also, the doc on de_moved ("at most") is accurate; only this comment needs changing.

Performance (low-medium): the worst case per placement is about MAX_CALLOUT_SEARCHES (500) searches × up to 60 rings × up to 64 directions, each checking every text box against the grid. That is roughly 1M+ grid lookups in one placement, and placement runs on every re-placement. The 500 cap bounds the count of searches, not the spots tested per search. Consider a total spot budget per placement (shared across labels, like searches), or stopping a search early once a ring's best candidate is found with len close to the reach. Not verified by timing.

Bug (low): let _ = app.run("labels.move", …) drops the error silently. Once a class holds MAX_MOVED_LABELS moved labels, the drag shows a preview, then snaps back on release with no message. Entries are also never pruned when their features are deleted (see labels.move in crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs), so this cap can be hit with stale entries. Suggest surfacing the error the way other failed commands in this file do, and pruning moved when features are removed or the layer's data is replaced.

Bugs

  • A project file with "callout": 0 or a negative value turns callouts on at the 5 pt minimum, while the command treats 0 as off. Low impact; only hand-edited files hit it. (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1985, confidence high on behaviour, low on impact)
  • The drag-drop path ignores labels.move errors (let _ =). Once a class holds 10,000 moved labels, the label snaps back with no message. Moved entries are also never pruned when their features are deleted, so stale entries can fill the cap. (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:2420, confidence medium)

Security

  • Nothing found. The new inputs are bounded and validated (is_label_place, callout_reach, MAX_MOVED_LABELS), and I found no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code.

Performance

  • The callout search can test a lot of spots in one placement: up to 500 searches × 60 rings × 64 directions, each checking text boxes against the grid. The 500 cap bounds searches, not spots. Consider a shared spot budget. (crates/render/src/lib.rs:4580, confidence medium, not timed)
  • label_at clones every candidate label before its extent check. It runs only on drag start and Shift-click, so this is a nit.

Quality

  • The comment in labels_are_moved_by_hand_and_put_back says the list "keeps the most", but de_moved keeps the first 10,000 ids in file order. (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:3405, confidence high)
  • The ribbon button reads "Reset Moved" while the command is titled "Reset Moved Labels". AGENTS asks for one name per thing. It also reuses the undo icon for a non-undo action. (crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs:4565, crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:230, confidence high)
  • The callout drawing is duplicated in text::draw_callout and mapview::draw_label. This is intentional per the PR body, so it's noted only.

AGENTS.md

  • The PR changes .rgis project format (new LabelClass fields) and adds parameters to the existing labels.placement command. CONTRIBUTING's "Coordinate first" list covers both, yet the PR says "Related issue: None" and does not mention a maintainer discussion. Confidence medium.
  • The PR adds two ribbon controls. The ribbon guidelines require stating the tab/group, how it fits the tab's purpose, and a 1366 px screenshot of the tab. The body names the tab but has no screenshot. AGENTS also asks for screenshots of substantial visible changes. Confidence high.

Checked: the full diff; AGENTS.md; docs/contributing.md (ribbon guidelines); CONTRIBUTING.md (coordinate-first list); the render loop's label-anchor logic (g.label_point() is the feature's point, so callout anchors are correct); the callout_line/callout_spot clamp calls, which cannot panic because the extents are checked first; and the project-file deserializers.

Scale the callout feature offset on the flat-map label path.

While a flat map zooms, main_view scales each label origin by s, but draw_label uses the stored callout feature offset unscaled. The callout start stays (x0, y0) * (s - 1) away from its feature until the map settles. The text end of the line stays attached to the text.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check the moved label before the class queries run.

For each off-screen feature, moved_here evaluates every class's SQL where clause through classes_of before it checks whether any class has a moved label for that feature. Add a cheap moved_to lookup first so the queries run only for features that have a move.

Suggested fix
-                    let moved_here = || any_moved && classes.classes_of(ds_ptr, row).any(|(_, c)| moved_to(c, fid).is_some());
+                    let moved_here = || any_moved && fid.is_some_and(|id| labels.in_order().any(|c| c.moved_to(id).is_some())) && classes.classes_of(ds_ptr, row).any(|(_, c)| moved_to(c, fid).is_some());

The added precheck is a necessary condition for the existing check. The moved_to closure returns None whenever class.moved_to(id) is None, so the result does not change.

Minor · Rebase callout anchors when a label moves into a turned view. · lib.rs:3752

crates/render/src/lib.rs:3752
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Rebase callout anchors when a label moves into a turned view.

On a rotated map, place_labels derives the callout feature as l.x + ax. The anchor is an offset in the pre-turn frame, so the feature lands on the wrong point whenever the rotation is not zero. The Turned loop in render_frame moves the label position but leaves callout_anchor unchanged. Map the feature point through the same transform first, then store the new offset from the moved label.

🐛 Suggested fix
                 for l in label_candidates.iter_mut().map(|c| &mut c.label).chain(fixed_labels.iter_mut()) {
+                    if let Some([ax, ay]) = l.collide.callout_anchor {
+                        let (fx, fy) = at(l.x + ax, l.y + ay);
+                        let (cx, cy) = at(l.x, l.y);
+                        l.collide.callout_anchor = Some([fx - cx, fy - cy]);

                     (l.x, l.y) = at(l.x, l.y);

The tilted path has the same root cause. raise_labels and lift_labels also derive the feature as l.x + ax, so that path needs a matching fix.

Add a drag and Shift-click on a pinned label to the move-label test.

The test's doc comment says Shift-click puts a moved label back. The test Shift-clicks only a label that is not pinned, so the restore branch never runs. Removing that branch would leave the test passing. Add a step that drags a label, Shift-clicks that pinned label, and asserts that its move is removed.

Cover the named-class reset path in the all: true test.

The test at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:2387-2388 checks only the Default class after labels.resetMoved with all: true. Every move before that point targets Default. If the named-class clearing loop in labels.resetMoved were removed, this test would still pass. Add a move on a named class before the reset, then assert that its moved list is empty afterward.

🧪 Suggested test addition
     s.run("labels.move", &json!({"layer": id, "feature": fid, "to": [1, 1]})).unwrap();
+    s.run("labels.class.add", &json!({"layer": id, "name": "Big", "where": "pop_max > 5000000"})).unwrap();
+    s.run("labels.move", &json!({"layer": id, "class": "Big", "feature": fid, "to": [3, 3]})).unwrap();
     // A bad "all" is refused, not taken as false.
     assert!(s.run("labels.resetMoved", &json!({"layer": id, "all": "tru"})).is_err());
     assert_eq!(moved(&s).len(), 1);
     s.run("labels.resetMoved", &json!({"layer": id, "all": true})).unwrap();
     assert!(moved(&s).is_empty());
+    let big = s.map().layer(id).unwrap().labels.classes.iter().find(|c| c.name == "Big").unwrap();
+    assert!(big.moved.is_empty());

The implementation at crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:236-238 clears named classes correctly today. This is a coverage gap, not a current functional defect.

Keep moved label centers when converting labels to annotations.

A label moved by hand renders at its saved center with no class offset. The converted annotation uses that center as its point. Its class keeps offset, and the Center placement adds that offset, so the annotation renders away from where the label was put when the offset is nonzero.

Preserve the saved center for annotations converted from moved labels, without the class offset. Do not clear offset on the shared converted class. Annotations from unmoved labels use the same class and would also lose the offset. Whether those annotations should keep it is a separate decision.

@pick2510 @huzaifffa I read the placement part (98ea58b) against #995's plan, and it fits:

One thing I noticed, reading rather than running it: the lock loses a callout's move. place_labels keeps (key, i) for the lock, i being its own place or the alternative, but not the callout's offset, and with the lock on the search is skipped (!locked). So with two nearby points whose class has callouts, if the second label moved off by a callout and the map is then locked, the next frame draws it back on its own spot, over the first, without its line. Keeping the offset in the lock next to the index would hold it.

For step 2 (candidates along a line, and the distance from it), Candidate::alternatives will go from points to places with an angle and glyphs, which touches the same lines as lift_labels, raise_labels and the loop in place_labels here. I'll start it once this PR lands, on top of it.

# Conflicts:
#	crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs
- A lock keeps how far a callout moved a label (`LockedPlace`), so a locked
  label stays there with its line.
- A callout's feature end is carried into turned and tilted views, and scales
  with a flat map's zoom while it moves.
- Converted annotations stay moved under their new ids, so a class's offset
  doesn't shift them.
- A failed drop says why; a class at its limit drops moves of deleted features.
- A project file's callout of 0 or less is off.
- Callout searches share a budget of spots per placement; moved-label lookup
  comes before reading a class's clause.
- "Reset Moved" is one name; tests for Shift-click on a moved label and Reset
  Moved with a named class.

@jgregoriorincon thanks for checking this against #995. You were right about the lock: a test reproduced it, with the label jumping back to its own spot. The lock now keeps a callout's offset next to the place index (LockedPlace), and the label holds its place and line as the map moves.

3e8f4f3 also covers the second review round:

  • Callout lines keep to their features on turned and tilted maps, and while a flat map zooms.
  • Moved labels stay put when converted to annotations.
  • A failed drop now shows a message, and a class at its limit drops moves of deleted features.
  • A project file's callout of 0 or less means off.
  • Callout searches share a budget of spots per placement.

Left as they are, tell me if you'd prefer otherwise:

  • Reset Moved keeps the undo icon.
  • The callout line is still drawn in both text::draw_callout and mapview::draw_label, as they use different painters.
  • The " pt" suffix stays as in the pane's other fields.

cargo xtask ci passes on this branch, and the description now has screenshots and a project-format note. @giswqs, could you confirm the new optional LabelClass fields are OK?

Nit (quality, high confidence): the drop path reports a failed labels.move with session.notify, but this Shift-click discards the error with let _ =, so a failure here is silent. Suggest matching the drop path:

Performance nit (medium-low confidence): label_at clones every candidate PlacedLabel (its text String and glyph Vec) before testing whether the pointer is over it, so a press on a dense layer clones up to every label in view. Testing the extent on a reference first, and cloning only on the hit, would avoid that. Not a blocker: it runs once per press, and only with Move Label selected.

Nit (quality, low confidence): the undo icon is the same one the ribbon uses for Undo, so "Reset Moved" may read as an undo. Consider a different icon from icons.rs, or keep it if the maintainers see the two as the same action.

Code review

Bugs: None confirmed. I traced the callout search budgets, the lock and pinned paths, the turned/tilted/globe anchor maths, the convert move path and the drag/cancel flow, and found no defect.

Security: None found. The project-file readers bound and clamp moved and callout, and the command parameters are validated, so the hostile-params test covers the new commands.

Performance:

  • label_at (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:1516) clones every candidate label before the hit test. Medium-low confidence; it runs only on a press with Move Label selected. Inline comment posted.

Quality:

  • The Shift-click path discards the labels.move error with let _ =, while the drop path reports it. High confidence. Inline comment with a suggestion posted (mapview.rs:2675).
  • "Reset Moved" reuses the undo icon, which reads as Undo. Low confidence. Inline comment posted (ribbon.rs:4565).
  • crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:575 uses unwrap_or(&mut labels.default), which silently moves an out-of-range class index into Default. Harmless in practice because the annotation's Default clause won't match. Low confidence; not posted.

AGENTS.md / CONTRIBUTING:

  • Coordination (high confidence, blocking). The PR changes the .rgis project format (LabelClass gains show_all, callout and moved) and an existing command's parameters (labels.placement gains showAll and callout). CONTRIBUTING.md lists both under "Coordinate first", and the PR body says it did not coordinate. It needs a maintainer's OK before merge. The change is also large: 1,340 added lines across 15 files.
  • Ribbon statement (medium confidence). The ribbon guidelines ask a ribbon PR to state the task, tab and group, whether the control selects a tool (Move Label does), and to include a 1366 px tab screenshot. The PR body covers none of these explicitly.
  • Translation (tl!), no new unwrap/expect/indexing in non-test code, no new assets or dependencies, and docs updated are all in order.

Reject feature IDs that the layer does not contain.

labels.move stores a move for any feature value. The move stays until the class reaches its limit. Rendering then applies it to whichever feature later takes that ID, so a new feature can inherit a label move. Check that the ID exists in the layer before calling move_label. Streamed layers need a different check.

Keep saved label moves for features outside the streamed window.

On a streamed layer, labels.move deletes saved moves whose feature IDs are absent from dataset.features. That list holds only the current window, so moves for off-window features are lost from the project. Skip this prune when the layer is windowed. The move then fails at the cap instead of discarding saved positions.

Read show_all leniently, like other_positions.

A non-boolean show_all value, such as "yes", fails the whole project load. Add deserialize_with = "de_flag" so a damaged value reads as false, as the neighboring other_positions field does.

Stale moved-label positions persist when a source replacement reuses feature IDs.

Moved labels are stored by feature ID in LabelClass::moved. Source replacement does not clear them. A replacement file can assign an existing ID to a different feature. That feature's label then draws at the saved position of the previous feature. The entry stays until the user runs Reset Moved or moves the label again.

The cleanup at the move limit does not remove these entries. It keeps every move whose ID still exists in the layer, so a reused ID keeps its move.

A fix needs either a stable feature identity or a documented requirement that feature IDs stay stable across source replacement. Clearing all moves on each replacement would also discard valid moves when repair relinks the same data.

Update how LabelClass::moved identifies saved label positions so source
replacement cannot apply a previous feature’s position to a different feature

Read moved labels one at a time, and apply the cap while reading.

de_moved passes the entire moved array to lenient::<D, Vec<Option<serde_json::Value>>> before it filters entries or checks MAX_MOVED_LABELS. The whole array is therefore held as serde_json::Value at once, so peak load memory grows with the array's size in the file, up to the 512 MiB project limit. The by_id map is capped, but the cap limits only what is retained, not what is buffered. The comment above de_moved says entries are read one by one, but the code does not do that.

Read the moved value with a serde visitor. Use next_element to read one entry at a time. For each entry, keep the current steps in the same order: skip entries that are null or do not parse as MovedLabel, skip entries where is_label_place is false, and insert only when by_id.len() < MAX_MOVED_LABELS || by_id.contains_key(&m.id). This keeps the last valid position for a duplicate ID, keeps the first 10,000 distinct IDs in array order, and bounds the map during the read. When the value is not an array, keep the current behavior of returning an empty list rather than an error. Handle every non-array shape that lenient currently accepts, including null, and consume any map value so the outer document still parses.

Update de_moved to deserialize the moved value with a serde visitor that reads
array entries one at a time via next_element, rather than buffering the full
array as serde_json::Value. Preserve the existing per-entry order: skip null or
invalid MovedLabel entries and entries where is_label_place is false, then
insert only if the ID is already present or by_id is below MAX_MOVED_LABELS.
Keep duplicate-ID replacement and first-10,000-distinct-ID behavior; return an
empty list for non-array values, including null, and consume map values so the

Correct the show-all docs: the 20,000-label cap still applies.

Apply locked callout offsets before the label is screened for visibility.

A locked label with a saved callout offset can be dropped while its displaced position is in view. Two checks run before the offset is applied:

  • The feature prefilter in place_labels (crates/render/src/lib.rs, around lines 3639-3657) keeps a feature only when its label point is in view or within offset_reach of the view. offset_reach is built from class offsets only. A callout offset is not included, so a feature just outside the view is skipped before its locked callout is considered.
  • In the selection loop (lines 4754-4756), a candidate is skipped when its unshifted text and icon boxes are all outside the view. The saved offset is applied afterward (lines 4771-4777), and the candidate is dropped at line 4766 when no position was selected.

Fix both checks. Apply the saved locked callout offset to the boxes before the outside test. Include the callout displacement range in the prefilter reach for locked labels. The displaced-locked case is new in this PR, so the regression applies only to labels locked after a callout move.

Hide the restored callout line when the class callouts are off.

While labels are locked, the locked branch restores a callout line without checking the class's callout_reach. Setting callout:false keeps the lock, so the line still draws. Gate the restored line on callout_reach > 0.0, as the pinned branch already does.

Reject label grabs that use labels from a previous map.

A label drag can start in the frame where a map switch takes effect. interact runs before main_view clears the cached labels, so label_at can return the previous map's label. MovingLabel records the new map, so the release check passes and labels.move saves a move for a feature ID on the new map. Skip grabs while the cached labels belong to an older revision, or clear them before interact when the revision changes.
