perf(data): export a streamed layer a chunk at a time - #1146
The second part of step 2 of #1111: on the desktop, Export Features (share.exportLayer) of a layer read in place now reads its source a chunk at a time (#1131), puts each chunk in the output's coordinate system and writes it before reading the next, for GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage and GeoParquet. The layer is never held whole, so these exports no longer stop at MAX_LIMIT, and they take a fraction of the memory.
Builds on #1131, whose three commits show here until it merges; this pull request's own change is the last commit.
Measured with the release CLI built from this branch's last commit, on one US state's building footprints (layer.addData, then share.exportLayer; i7-6700, single runs, warm cache; TMPDIR on disk so the FlatGeobuf writer's temporary file isn't counted as memory). "Before" is main at 13aee13 exporting the layer added whole, the only way it could export it. Peak memory is the steady figure; times varied by about 25% between two runs on this shared machine.

What remains in memory is a chunk (32 MB of features) and what each format's writer keeps: FlatGeobuf an index entry per feature (its features go to a temporary file), GeoParquet one row group, GeoPackage SQLite's page cache.
One writer per format. The in-memory export and the streamed one now write through the same code, so they give the same file:
io::GeoJsonWriter and io::CsvWriter write a run of features at a time; to_csv and the GeoJSON export use them.
fgb::write_features and parquet::write_features take the features from a feed; fgb::write_in and parquet::write feed the whole dataset. A GeoParquet's geo metadata (geometry types, bounding box) is gathered as rows are written and appended to the footer at close.
A GeoPackage is built in three steps (create, insert, finish) that both paths share.
Choices a whole layer settles. A GeoPackage export makes a point layer's table MULTIPOINT if any feature is a multipoint, and keeps the source's ids only if all are unique. A streamed export chooses from the features so far; should a later one contradict the choice, it starts again with it settled, reading the source again (at most twice more), and gives the file the whole export gives. A repeated id is caught by the table's primary key, so no set of ids is held. A layer that declares no geometry type takes its first geometry's, as a whole read does.
What stays as it was.
Shapefile, KML, KMZ and GPX are still written from the whole layer, up to MAX_LIMIT: a Shapefile's DBF field widths come from a pass over the data, so streaming it needs two passes, which is better as its own change.
A source read by its web address is read whole, as before.
The web app's export is unchanged (step 2's third item).
Layer::chunk_export gives the open source and the field names load_all would use; share.exportLayer falls back to load_all where the source or format can't stream.
Output differences for in-memory exports.
GeoJSON's top-level members are now written as type, name, features (they were features, name, type, serde_json's sorted order). The JSON is the same.
A streamed GeoParquet's row groups end with its chunks (at most 65,536 rows each, as before); an in-memory export's are unchanged.
Also carried over from #1131's review: the GeoPackage traversal's doc says a program writing to the file waits for it, and a removed file fails as missing rather than "replaced".
Testing
cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, the workspace tests, layers): passes (2,887 tests).
The commit hooks (fmt, clippy and the file checks): pass.
New tests in crates/data/src/export/tests.rs:
a_streamed_export_writes_what_a_whole_export_writes: GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet and Shapefile sources read 2 KB a chunk (about 40 chunks), exported to every streamed format, in longitude/latitude and EPSG:3857 where the format holds it, read back equal to the same export of the whole layer, with the same written and leftOut counts;
a_streamed_geopackage_starts_again_when_later_features_need_another_table: a multipoint after points, a repeated id, and both (three passes), each giving the whole export's table type and rows;
streamed_exports_refuse_what_they_cant_write: Shapefile and KML, longitude/latitude-only formats in EPSG:3857, a source that can't be read a chunk at a time.
Desktop exports can process eligible GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet, and Shapefile layers in chunks when exporting to GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage, or GeoParquet, reducing the need to load the entire layer at once.
Exported features are converted to the selected coordinate system, and export results report the numbers of features written and omitted.
Sources accessed by web address continue to be exported as a whole.
Documentation
Updated the user guide with details about chunked exports, supported formats, and source limitations.
`visit_chunks` for GeoPackage (desktop and the browser's reader), FlatGeobuf and
GeoParquet files and uploads, behind a new `visits_chunks()` capability that,
unlike `streams_chunks()`, leaves drawing alone. The Shapefile's chunk
accounting moves into a shared `Chunker`. The first part of opengeos#1111 step 2:
exports will stream from these chunks.

…eoPackage
- GeoParquet: a row group longer than a read takes from one is an error, not a
shorter traversal reported complete.
- GeoPackage: pages of rows by rowid on the source's own connection, read under
its lock and handed over after it, instead of reopening the file by path.
- The trait says what `matched` counts for each provider.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…pened
- GeoPackage: one statement on a read-only connection of its own (one
snapshot, the same query and order as a read) instead of pages by rowid,
refusing a file put in place of the one opened (device and inode, on Unix).
- GeoParquet: an oversized row group is refused before anything of it is read,
after a row group outside the extent is passed over.
- Tests compare unindexed extent visits in order; the trait names FlatGeobuf's
list of matches.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… short Parquet column
- GeoPackage: the file's identity is taken before the database is opened, so a
file swapped in while it opens can't pass for it; `visits_chunks()` is true
only with a file.
- GeoParquet: a row group over the cap and one with a short geometry column
give their own errors.
- Tests: the browser reader's skipped rows; a capped row group outside the
extent is passed over; a chunk is over the budget only for a row alone too big.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`share.exportLayer` of a layer read in place reads its source a chunk at a
time, reprojects each chunk in place and writes it, for GeoJSON, CSV,
FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage and GeoParquet on the desktop, so these exports no
longer hold the layer or stop at `MAX_LIMIT`. Each of those formats has one
writer, shared by the in-memory and streamed exports. A GeoPackage chooses its
point table type and id keeping from the features so far and starts again if
a later one contradicts that. Shapefile, KML, KMZ, GPX, sources by web address
and the web app keep the whole-layer path.
Also from opengeos#1131's review: the GeoPackage traversal's doc says a writer of the
file waits for it, and a removed file fails as missing.
Part of opengeos#1111.

Walkthrough
This change adds chunked export for supported local feature sources and formats. Source providers deliver feature batches, writers accept those batches, and the map and engine select the chunked path for eligible exports.
Changes: Chunked Feature Export
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Chunk traversal across sources crates/data/src/source/*
The source contract and shared chunker support chunk traversal in GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet, and Shapefile sources. Tests compare traversals with whole reads and cover traversal errors and provider-specific behavior.
Batch-capable format writers crates/data/src/io.rs, crates/data/src/source/fgb.rs, crates/data/src/source/gpkg.rs, crates/data/src/source/parquet.rs
GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage, and GeoParquet writers accept feature batches. The changes also add atomic file writing and in-place projection support.
The export API validates and coordinates chunked writes. Map and engine code select this path for supported exports. Tests cover parity, restart behavior, and failures. The user guide describes the supported flow.
opengeos/RustGIS#857: Protects existing GeoPackage destinations; this change also installs streamed GeoPackage output without replacing an existing destination.
opengeos/RustGIS#1116: Defines refusal of oversized whole-source reads; this change uses chunk traversal for eligible exports while retaining whole-read limits for fallback paths.
opengeos/RustGIS#1131: Adds the chunk-visitation contract and provider traversal used by streamed exports.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 993b3
Large GeoParquet row groups can still exhaust memory during streamed export. An untyped GeoPackage export can also produce an inconsistent file if its source changes mid-export. Resolve or explicitly accept these risks before merging.

Explanation
The title "perf(data): export a streamed layer a chunk at a time" matches the main change. The PR makes desktop Export Features read a layer read in place one chunk at a time for GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage and GeoParquet, and the raw summary confirms the chunked export path in crates/data/src/export.rs and crates/engine/src/cmd/share.rs. It is concise, follows a conventional-commit style, and names the primary change without noise.

Robustness (medium confidence, currently unreachable):insert returns Ok(Some(Redo)) when it meets a row the table can't hold, but build discards that value with ?. build precomputes multi_points and keep_ids from every feature, so no redo should happen today. If that invariant ever breaks, the whole-layer export would silently drop rows. Turning the redo into an error keeps that failure loud.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Applied in 993b34c: build now fails with "a feature doesn't fit the table chosen for the layer" should insert ever ask to start again, rather than leaving the rest out. cargo xtask ci (2,887 tests) and the wasm build pass.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance / memory (medium confidence): for an in-memory FlatGeobuf (Input::Bytes, e.g. one embedded in a project), every call to open() copies the whole buffer, and visit_with can call it up to three times. A streamed export of an upload therefore holds a full extra copy of the file, which the "held in a chunk" claim doesn't account for. visit_with is generic over R: Read + Seek with no 'static bound, so a borrowed cursor should work. I haven't compiled this. The existing read_with call sites (fgb.rs ~246 and ~525) use the same copy pattern and could take the same change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
No copy here: Input::Bytes holds a Shared, which is #[derive(Clone)] struct Shared(Arc<Vec<u8>>) (source/mod.rs:318-320), so b.clone() bumps a reference count and the Cursor reads the one buffer. The read paths use the same pattern for the same reason.
I found no correctness bugs that would break an export today. I read the full diff and checked the streamed writers, the GeoPackage restart logic, the FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet visitors, the share.exportLayer wiring, and the AGENTS.md rules. The new tests cover parity with whole-layer exports, failure cleanup, and the file-replacement guard. I did not compile or run anything (no shell in this review), so the inline suggestions are unverified.
Bugs
crates/data/src/source/gpkg.rs:617 (medium confidence, currently unreachable): build discards the Option<Redo> returned by insert. The precomputed multi_points and keep_ids mean no redo should occur, but if that invariant breaks, a whole-layer export would silently drop rows. Inline suggestion posted.
Security
None found. Input handling in the new code uses get(), saturating_* and capped row counts, and it has no unwrap, expect, or panic outside tests.
Performance
crates/data/src/source/fgb.rs:548 (medium confidence): Input::Bytes clones the whole buffer on every open(), and visit_with can open up to three times. That copies the upload, which the "held in a chunk" claim doesn't account for. The same pattern exists in the older read_with paths. Inline suggestion posted.
visit_first_kind in export.rs runs an extra pass only for untyped layers, and it stops at the first chunk. That is acceptable.
Quality
write_atomic_with in io.rs duplicates the temp-file, sync, and rename logic of write_atomic. Consider having write_atomic delegate, or leave a comment saying why the two differ (error type, buffering).
first_kind in export.rs uses a sentinel DataError::Format("found a geometry") to stop the traversal and then matches on it. A dedicated stop value or a ControlFlow-style return would be clearer.
The GeoParquet visitor refuses any row group above MAX_GROUP_ROWS (2^24 on desktop) with an error that gives the user no workaround. This is a deliberate choice, and it is better than the old silent truncation. Low confidence that it needs changing.
AGENTS.md
crates/data/src/source/parquet.rs (~line 375 in the read path, and the new start.saturating_add) hardens base + r + 1 into saturating_add. The guidelines require a regression test for every crash fix, and this change has none. Either add a test with a crafted row-count sum that overflows u64, or describe the change as hardening rather than a crash fix.
No new user-visible strings were added in this PR, so the tl! and i18n::fmt rules don't apply to it. Nothing here touches the ribbon or adds dependencies.
wasm32: streams() short-circuits on the web, and the GeoPackage writer is cfg-gated. The PR reports that the wasm build passes, and I found nothing that would break it.

Correct the GeoParquet memory claim in the user guide.
The guide says a streamed export "is never held whole, so its size isn't limited by memory." For GeoParquet, that is not accurate. The export decodes every geometry and attribute value of a row group before it writes the first chunk. The only limit is a row-count cap of 16,777,216 rows, with no byte limit. A row group above the base whole-read limit of 2,000,000 features was refused before this change. It is now accepted and can exhaust memory. The code comment already says the peak is "a row group's columns plus a chunk," so the guide should state the same unit.

crates/data/src/export.rs:58-62 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject mismatched geometry kinds in GeoPackage export, or bind the probed kind to the write.
For an untyped layer, the export probes the first geometry kind, then reads the source again to write features. If the source changes between the two reads, the GeoPackage can declare a POINT table and store polygon blobs. The GeoPackage insert path checks only for a MultiPoint in a POINT table. It does not check other feature kinds against the table type.
Possible direction
Check each feature's geometry kind against the layout's declared type in insert, and return an error on mismatch. Run this check after the existing MultiPoint redo, so that a MultiPoint in a POINT table still restarts the export as a MULTIPOINT table. Alternatively, derive the output type from the same traversal that writes the features. I did not verify either change against all writers, so I am not proposing an exact edit.

The count checks at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:19509-19512 pass when one row repeats count times. They also pass when a chunked export duplicates some rows and skips others while keeping the total. In the fixture, every row has the same geometry, name is NULL, and lanes is 2. The fid value is not exported, so every CSV data row is identical. The test cannot distinguish these outputs.

out, should one not fit the table chosen for the layer.
- The temporary file of a streamed export is opened before its cleanup, so a
name already taken is never removed.
- The user guide says a GeoParquet source's memory grows with its largest row
group.
- The 2,000,001-feature export test checks every row, once and in order.

Both reviews of 738e76a are handled in 993b34c; cargo xtask ci (2,887 tests) and the wasm build pass. Inline findings have their own replies. The rest:
GeoParquet memory in the user guide (CodeRabbit): corrected. The guide now says what stays in memory: a chunk, a GeoParquet source's row group at a time (memory grows with its largest), a FlatGeobuf output's index entry per feature.
Geometry kinds that don't match a GeoPackage's table (CodeRabbit): this needs a source of mixed kinds (a FlatGeobuf declaring Unknown, say). The whole-layer export does the same, since materialize also types the layer by its first geometry and build writes every feature into that table; the streamed export gives the same file, as the parity test checks. Refusing mixed layers would change both exports, so I'd rather leave it to its own issue. A source changing between the probe and the write is the same as a source changing during any export.
Rows of the 2,000,001-feature export (CodeRabbit nitpick): applied. Every road has its own name, and the test reads the CSV through, checking each row once and in order without holding them.
write_atomic and write_atomic_with (github-actions): kept separate. write_atomic is public and returns std::io::Result for writers of bytes already in hand; the streamed one writes through a buffer and returns the crate's Result, which the writers' errors need.
first_kind's stop (github-actions): an error from the visitor is how visit_chunks stops ("Callback errors stop traversal"); first_kind keeps the kind it found and treats that stop as success.
Changed since your review of 738e76a: a whole-layer GeoPackage export fails rather than drop a feature that doesn't fit its table; a streamed export's temporary file is opened before its cleanup; the user guide states GeoParquet's row-group memory; the 2,000,001-feature test checks every row in order.

Nit: "refused before anything is read" isn't accurate for this check. It runs when its own row group is reached, after earlier groups have already been read and handed to the visitor. The error still aborts the export cleanly (the atomic write leaves no file), so behaviour is fine. Suggested wording:

Right, it's refused before that group is read, not before anything is. A comment-only fix; since this head is approved, I'll carry the rewording into the next pull request of this stack (the web app's FlatGeobuf export) rather than start another review round for it.
I reviewed the full diff (17 files) against AGENTS.md and the surrounding source. I could not build or run tests in this environment, so the compile-level checks are by reading. I checked the types the new code uses against their definitions, including rows(&[Val]), Shared as an Arc, and Geometry::kind.
Bugs: none confirmed. Things I traced and found correct: the GeoPackage restart loop (three passes, a fresh temp file per pass, and the redo error always wins over the source's error), the parquet row-id numbering against read, the FlatGeobuf left_out accounting, and the temp-file cleanup on every error path.
Security: none found. Output goes to a sibling temp file, is synced, then renamed. The GeoPackage source checks the file's identity before and after the scan, and refuses a file that was replaced.
Performance:
A GeoPackage export whose table choice changes late (a multipoint, or a repeated id in a late chunk) reads the source again, up to three full scans in total. The PR documents this. Low severity, confidence high.
Quality:
Two wording nits, posted inline: the "refused before anything is read" comment in parquet.rs:423, and the hard-to-parse Runs doc comment in export/tests.rs:45. Confidence high.
AGENTS.md:
No unwrap, expect, panic!, or unsafe in non-test code. Test code uses unwrap, which the existing tests also do.
Layering holds: the new code is in data and map, and nothing below L6 pulls in egui.
The WebAssembly build is not affected. export::streams returns false on wasm, and the GeoPackage writer is gated off there.
No new user-visible strings, so the tl! and i18n::fmt rules don't apply.
The attributions to ATTRIBUTION.md and THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES don't apply, since no dependency changed.

Summary
The second part of step 2 of #1111: on the desktop, Export Features (
share.exportLayer) of a layer read in place now reads its source a chunk at a time (#1131), puts each chunk in the output's coordinate system and writes it before reading the next, for GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage and GeoParquet. The layer is never held whole, so these exports no longer stop atMAX_LIMIT, and they take a fraction of the memory.Builds on #1131, whose three commits show here until it merges; this pull request's own change is the last commit.
Measured with the release CLI built from this branch's last commit, on one US state's building footprints (
layer.addData, thenshare.exportLayer; i7-6700, single runs, warm cache;TMPDIRon disk so the FlatGeobuf writer's temporary file isn't counted as memory). "Before" is main at 13aee13 exporting the layer added whole, the only way it could export it. Peak memory is the steady figure; times varied by about 25% between two runs on this shared machine.MAX_LIMIT)What remains in memory is a chunk (32 MB of features) and what each format's writer keeps: FlatGeobuf an index entry per feature (its features go to a temporary file), GeoParquet one row group, GeoPackage SQLite's page cache.
One writer per format. The in-memory export and the streamed one now write through the same code, so they give the same file:
io::GeoJsonWriterandio::CsvWriterwrite a run of features at a time;to_csvand the GeoJSON export use them.fgb::write_featuresandparquet::write_featurestake the features from a feed;fgb::write_inandparquet::writefeed the whole dataset. A GeoParquet'sgeometadata (geometry types, bounding box) is gathered as rows are written and appended to the footer at close.create, insert, finish) that both paths share.Choices a whole layer settles.
MAX_LIMIT: a Shapefile's DBF field widths come from a pass over the data, so streaming it needs two passes, which is better as its own change.Layer::chunk_exportgives the open source and the field namesload_allwould use;share.exportLayerfalls back toload_allwhere the source or format can't stream.Output differences for in-memory exports.
type, name, features(they werefeatures, name, type, serde_json's sorted order). The JSON is the same. Also carried over from #1131's review: the GeoPackage traversal's doc says a program writing to the file waits for it, and a removed file fails as missing rather than "replaced".
