fix(data): refuse FlatGeobuf in the web app instead of aborting it - #1152
The third part of step 2 of #1111. Exporting a layer as FlatGeobuf in the web app aborted the whole app; now the browser refuses FlatGeobuf with a message, and its Export Features dialog no longer offers it.
Builds on #1146 (which builds on #1131), whose commits show here until they merge; this pull request's own change is the last commit.
The crash. Reproduced in the preview of #1146 (?embed, then ui.exportLayer with "format": "fgb"): GeoJSON downloads, FlatGeobuf panics with no filesystem on this platform (std's temp_dir on wasm32-unknown-unknown), the panic traps as RuntimeError: unreachable, and the app stops answering. catch_unwind can't help there, as the web build aborts on a panic.
Why not write it unindexed, as #1111 planned. The flatgeobuf crate's writer creates its spill file with tempfile::tempfile() in FgbWriter::create_with_options whether or not it writes an index (6.0.1, the latest, and its current master), and its feature encoder is private, so there is no public way to write a FlatGeobuf without that file. Writing the format ourselves would mean re-implementing the encoder on a new direct flatbuffers dependency. The better fix is upstream: a way to give the writer an in-memory store (or to skip it when there's no index). Once that ships, the web app can offer FlatGeobuf again.
The change.
fgb::write_features, the one place FlatGeobuf is written (whole-layer exports, io::write_bytes_in, and the streamed exports of perf(data): export a streamed layer a chunk at a time #1146), refuses in the browser before it creates the writer: "unsupported file type: FlatGeobuf in the browser", as GeoPackage already is. Any route to it in the web app (the dialog, command search, a script, the AI Assistant) now gets that message instead of a dead app.
Export Features in the web app lists formats from dialogs::export_formats(web), which leaves out GeoPackage and FlatGeobuf; the desktop lists all of them.
The user guide (Writing, Sharing) and the comparison page say the web app doesn't write FlatGeobuf.
cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, the workspace tests, layers): passes (2,888 tests).
cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web: passes, without warnings.
The commit hooks: pass.
New test dialogs::tests::the_web_export_dialog_offers_no_geopackage_or_flatgeobuf: opens Export Features in the app with a download service (the web app) and without (the desktop), opens its Format list and reads what it offers: no FlatGeobuf or GeoPackage on the web, both on the desktop.
In the browser, this pull request's preview (14e6857), framed with ?embed and sent a one-layer project: ui.exportLayer as GeoJSON downloads; as FlatGeobuf it answers {"ok": false, "error": "unsupported file type: FlatGeobuf in the browser"} with no console error; a CSV export after it downloads, so the app is still running. The same steps on perf(data): export a streamed layer a chunk at a time #1146's preview aborted the app at the FlatGeobuf export.
Desktop exports can process large GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet, and Shapefile layers in chunks when exporting to supported formats, including GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage, and GeoParquet.
Export results report how many features were written and left out.
Bug Fixes
Exported files are finalized only after a successful write, preventing incomplete files from being left behind after failures.
Documentation
Clarified that FlatGeobuf and GeoPackage exports are unavailable in the web app.
`visit_chunks` for GeoPackage (desktop and the browser's reader), FlatGeobuf and
GeoParquet files and uploads, behind a new `visits_chunks()` capability that,
unlike `streams_chunks()`, leaves drawing alone. The Shapefile's chunk
accounting moves into a shared `Chunker`. The first part of opengeos#1111 step 2:
exports will stream from these chunks.

…eoPackage
- GeoParquet: a row group longer than a read takes from one is an error, not a
shorter traversal reported complete.
- GeoPackage: pages of rows by rowid on the source's own connection, read under
its lock and handed over after it, instead of reopening the file by path.
- The trait says what `matched` counts for each provider.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…pened
- GeoPackage: one statement on a read-only connection of its own (one
snapshot, the same query and order as a read) instead of pages by rowid,
refusing a file put in place of the one opened (device and inode, on Unix).
- GeoParquet: an oversized row group is refused before anything of it is read,
after a row group outside the extent is passed over.
- Tests compare unindexed extent visits in order; the trait names FlatGeobuf's
list of matches.

… short Parquet column
- GeoPackage: the file's identity is taken before the database is opened, so a
file swapped in while it opens can't pass for it; `visits_chunks()` is true
only with a file.
- GeoParquet: a row group over the cap and one with a short geometry column
give their own errors.
- Tests: the browser reader's skipped rows; a capped row group outside the
extent is passed over; a chunk is over the budget only for a row alone too big.

`share.exportLayer` of a layer read in place reads its source a chunk at a
time, reprojects each chunk in place and writes it, for GeoJSON, CSV,
FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage and GeoParquet on the desktop, so these exports no
longer hold the layer or stop at `MAX_LIMIT`. Each of those formats has one
writer, shared by the in-memory and streamed exports. A GeoPackage chooses its
point table type and id keeping from the features so far and starts again if
a later one contradicts that. Shapefile, KML, KMZ, GPX, sources by web address
and the web app keep the whole-layer path.
Also from opengeos#1131's review: the GeoPackage traversal's doc says a writer of the
file waits for it, and a removed file fails as missing.
Part of opengeos#1111.

…ile its own
- A GeoPackage export of a whole layer fails, rather than leaving a feature
out, should one not fit the table chosen for the layer.
- The temporary file of a streamed export is opened before its cleanup, so a
name already taken is never removed.
- The user guide says a GeoParquet source's memory grows with its largest row
group.
- The 2,000,001-feature export test checks every row, once and in order.

The flatgeobuf crate's writer always creates a temporary file, which in the
browser reaches `std::env::temp_dir` and aborts the app. The browser now
refuses FlatGeobuf with a message, and its Export Features dialog no longer
offers it. Also two comments reworded from opengeos#1146's review.

The change adds chunk traversal for supported feature sources and incremental writers for selected export formats. The engine uses this path for eligible streamed layers. The web export list excludes GeoPackage and FlatGeobuf, and documentation describes desktop chunked exports.
Changes: Chunked feature export
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Chunk traversal across feature sources crates/data/src/source/*, crates/data/src/source/tests.rs
A shared chunker batches features by estimated memory use. GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf, and GeoParquet sources provide complete-source traversal, with tests for ordering, filtering, limits, and traversal failures.
Incremental format writers crates/data/src/io.rs, crates/data/src/source/fgb.rs, crates/data/src/source/gpkg.rs, crates/data/src/source/parquet.rs
GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage, and GeoParquet writers accept feature batches. File-based writes use temporary files and install output after successful completion.
The data crate adds a public chunked export API. Map layers provide a readable source and export metadata; the engine selects streamed or whole-layer export. Tests cover parity, writer restarts, failures, and exports beyond the whole-read limit.
Platform format availability and documentation crates/ui-egui/src/*, docs/comparison/index.md, docs/user-guide/*
The web format list excludes GeoPackage and FlatGeobuf. Documentation describes desktop chunked exports and notes that web-address sources are exported whole.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the web app now refuses FlatGeobuf exports with an error instead of aborting. The changeset matches this. It adds the browser refusal in fgb::write_features, removes FlatGeobuf from the web Export Features list, and updates the docs. The title uses the conventional fix(data) prefix and stays under one line. It does not cover the streamed export work, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Nit (docs, high confidence): this says the streamed writer gives "the collection to_geojson gives ... its members in the order type, name, features". That isn't true. serde_json here has no preserve_order (no indexmap in Cargo.lock), so to_geojson's json! object serializes its keys sorted: features, name, type. Since projected_bytes now uses this writer, whole-layer GeoJSON bytes also changed order. The JSON is semantically identical, so this is only a wrong comment. Suggest describing the member order the writer emits, not claiming it matches to_geojson.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 700bd34: the doc now says it's the same collection as to_geojson, its members written in the order type, name, features, while a serialized to_geojson sorts them. (#1146's description notes the order change for whole-layer GeoJSON.)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Memory (medium confidence): for an in-memory FlatGeobuf, visit_with calls open() several times, and each call does Cursor::new(b.clone()), copying the whole upload. The reader plus the search reader are alive together, so peak memory is about 2 to 3 times the upload. That contradicts the visit_chunks doc ("one feature decoded at a time from the file or upload"). The same clone already exists in read_with, so this isn't new, but this PR advertises chunked memory for exports. Suggest holding the bytes in an Arc<[u8]> (or similar) so each open is a cheap clone, or documenting the copy.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
No copy: Input::Bytes holds a Shared, which is #[derive(Clone)] struct Shared(Arc<Vec<u8>>) (source/mod.rs:318-320), so b.clone() bumps a reference count and every Cursor reads the one buffer. (Answered the same way on #1146.)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Test gap (medium confidence, AGENTS.md: "every crash fix gets a regression test"): the wasm refusal is a cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32") check, so native tests never reach that branch. The dialog test only proves the menu hides FlatGeobuf. Nothing tests that write_in / write_features refuses with Unsupported rather than calling FgbWriter::create_with_options, which is the crash. Suggest moving the guard into a small helper taking a web: bool (or the platform flag as a parameter) so a native test can cover both branches.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in 700bd34: the refusal goes through fgb::writable(browser), called with cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32"), and flatgeobuf_is_refused_in_the_browser_and_written_on_the_desktop covers both cases natively. The end-to-end check is in the description: this PR's preview answers the FlatGeobuf export with the error and keeps running. cargo xtask ci (2,890 tests) and the wasm build (no warnings) pass.

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit (docs, high confidence): "row groups of 65,536 features" is no longer exact. The streamed export feeds each chunk separately, so every chunk ends with a smaller row group (the code comment in parquet.rs says so). Suggest "row groups of up to 65,536 features". Related: the row at line 333 still says "Feature export loads a streamed layer's whole source", which conflicts with the new streamed desktop export described in data.md.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 700bd34: "row groups of up to 65,536 features", and the Writing table's note now says a streamed layer exports a chunk at a time on the desktop to GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage or GeoParquet, and is loaded whole otherwise.
No correctness bugs found. I traced the streamed GeoPackage restart logic (at most three passes, temp file dropped on each restart), the GeoParquet row-group and covering-box filtering, and the chunker's oversized-row path. They match the whole-read behaviour, and the parity tests cover them. (confidence: high)
Security
No new issues. The GeoPackage chunk reader uses the same read-only, query-only hardened open as the existing reader. Parquet row counts are capped and use saturating arithmetic. Non-test code has no new unwrap, expect, panic, or unchecked indexing. (confidence: high)
Performance
In-memory FlatGeobuf memory: visit_with clones the whole upload on every open(), and up to about 3 copies can be alive at once, which contradicts the "one feature at a time" claim. The same clone already exists in read_with, so this is not new. (confidence: medium) — inline comment posted.
first_kind pulls up to one 32 MB chunk before it can peek the first geometry. It only runs for layers with no declared geometry type, so the cost is small. (confidence: low)
Quality
The wasm guard in fgb::write_features is a cfg! check, so native tests never reach it. The crash fix therefore has no regression test that exercises the refusal; the dialog test only checks that the menu hides FlatGeobuf. (confidence: medium) — inline comment posted.
The GeoJsonWriter doc says its member order matches to_geojson. It doesn't: serde_json here has no preserve_order, so to_geojson emits keys sorted (features, name, type). (confidence: high) — inline comment posted.
Nits, grouped: the data-formats.md GeoParquet "row groups of 65,536 features" line is now only an upper bound for streamed exports, and the Export Features row still says "loads a streamed layer's whole source". Both are inline-commented on data-formats.md. The Chunker's shrink_to_fit on every flush and the first_kind sentinel-error control flow are style points, not defects.
AGENTS.md
Wasm: export.rs and the new helpers compile for wasm32; streams() and the cfg! guard keep the browser away from the writers.
Crash rule: "every crash fix gets a regression test" is only partly met (see Quality above).
Translation, layering, assets, and commands-don't-open-dialogs: no violations found. No new dependencies.

Remove the staging file when a writer panics.
606-617: Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Remove the staging file when a writer panics.
write_atomic_with creates the staging file and then runs the caller's writer. Its cleanup runs only when the writer returns Err. If the writer panics, the unwind skips that cleanup, and the partly written staging file remains beside the destination. The engine's command guard catches the panic and returns an error, but it does not remove staging files. Use a drop guard that deletes the staging file unless the rename succeeds, so cleanup also runs on unwind.

Review comment at @crates/data/src/io.rs around lines 606 - 617:
Update write_atomic_with to use a drop guard that removes the staging file
unless the rename succeeds. Ensure the guard remains active while the caller’s
writer runs, so it cleans up on both returned errors and panics, and disarm it
only after a successful rename.

…a panicking export
- The browser refusal goes through `fgb::writable`, so a native test covers it.
- A streamed export's temporary file is removed by a drop guard, on a panic in
its writer as on an error.
- The user guide says a streamed layer exports a chunk at a time on the
desktop, and GeoParquet row groups hold up to 65,536 features; the GeoJSON
writer's doc gives its member order.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both reviews of 14e6857 are handled in 700bd34; cargo xtask ci (2,890 tests) and the wasm build (no warnings) pass. Inline findings have their own replies. CodeRabbit's follow-up, the staging file left by a writer that panics, is fixed: write_atomic_with holds the file in a guard that removes it when dropped (on an error or an unwind alike) unless the rename succeeded, with a_panicking_writer_leaves_nothing_behind checking it.
The browser check is now in the description: this PR's preview answers a FlatGeobuf export with "unsupported file type: FlatGeobuf in the browser" and keeps running.
Changed since your approval of 14e6857: a streamed export's temporary file is removed by a drop guard (also on a panic); the browser refusal goes through fgb::writable with a native test; user-guide corrections (streamed exports, Parquet row groups) and the GeoJSON writer's doc.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (medium confidence): a streamed export calls write_features once per source chunk, and each chunk becomes its own row group(s). Chunks are sized by bytes (32 MB), so a layer whose features average around 16 KB gets about 2,000 rows per row group, against the 65,536 a whole-layer export writes. That is roughly 30× more row groups for the same layer, and every extra row group adds per-column footer metadata and reader overhead (4 bbox columns plus geometry and attributes each). Features bigger than the budget get a row group of one row each.
The doc line "row groups of up to 65,536 features" is accurate but hides this. Either buffer rows across chunks up to WRITE_GROUP_ROWS, or close a row group when the buffered bytes reach the budget, or at least document that streamed GeoParquet row-group size follows the source's chunk size.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Row groups of a streamed export are sized by bytes, a chunk's 32 MB of decoded features (smaller on disk once encoded and compressed), and capped at 65,536 rows. For small features that's the whole-layer size; for large ones it's fewer rows of about the same bytes, which is within the usual row-group sizes for Parquet readers, and buffering across chunks would hold more than one chunk, which the streamed export avoids. The code comment on write_features says the groups end with the chunks; I'll carry a line to the same effect into the user guide with the follow-up below.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (low confidence):first_kind(src, bytes) peeks with the full export budget (32 MB). Chunker hands a chunk over only once it is full, so the early stop on the first geometry happens only after up to 32 MB of features have been decoded, even when the first feature has geometry. The sentinel-error early exit also reads awkwardly.
A smaller peek budget removes most of the wasted work and keeps memory bounded:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed: a 1 MB peek finds the first geometry with far less decoding, and it only runs for a layer that declares no type. This head is approved, so rather than start another round I'll make it, with the user guide's wording on the GeoParquet row-group cap and on row-group sizes, in a small follow-up once this stack has merged.
I read the full diff against the staged AGENTS.md and checked the key claims against the head sources. I did not build or run the tests (no shell here), so the findings below come from reading the code. No blocking correctness bug turned up. The wasm gating, the FlatGeobuf browser refusal, the atomic-write cleanup and the GeoPackage redo logic all check out on reading.
Bugs
None confirmed.
Security

Performance
GeoParquet streamed export writes one or more row groups per source chunk, so row-group size follows the byte budget rather than 65,536 rows. For features averaging ~16 KB this is about 30× more row groups than a whole-layer export. Posted inline at crates/data/src/source/parquet.rs:1039. Confidence: medium.
first_kind peeks with the full 32 MB export budget before deciding the layer's geometry type. Posted inline at crates/data/src/export.rs:61 with a one-line suggestion. Confidence: low.
FlatGeobuf uploads (Input::Bytes) copy the whole buffer on each open(). The existing read path does the same, so this is not new. Confidence: low.
Quality
The GeoJSON writer changes member order (type, name, features) in projected_bytes, so web and data.convert downloads change bytes, though the content is equal. The doc comment acknowledges this. Confidence: high that it changes; low that it matters.
The GeoPackage streamed export can rescan the whole source up to three times (once per redo) when a duplicate id or a multipoint appears late. Bounded and correct, but worth a note in the docs. Confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code. Crash fixes have regression tests. The wasm gating (cfg(not(wasm32)) on the GeoPackage writer, writable() on FlatGeobuf) fits the rule. No new user-facing literals need tl!.
The docs say "with no limit on its size" for streamed export. Desktop GeoParquet still refuses row groups above 2^24 rows, so that claim is too broad. Confidence: medium.

Summary
The third part of step 2 of #1111. Exporting a layer as FlatGeobuf in the web app aborted the whole app; now the browser refuses FlatGeobuf with a message, and its Export Features dialog no longer offers it.
Builds on #1146 (which builds on #1131), whose commits show here until they merge; this pull request's own change is the last commit.
The crash. Reproduced in the preview of #1146 (
?embed, thenui.exportLayerwith"format": "fgb"): GeoJSON downloads, FlatGeobuf panics withno filesystem on this platform(std'stemp_dironwasm32-unknown-unknown), the panic traps asRuntimeError: unreachable, and the app stops answering.catch_unwindcan't help there, as the web build aborts on a panic. Why not write it unindexed, as #1111 planned. The
flatgeobufcrate's writer creates its spill file withtempfile::tempfile()inFgbWriter::create_with_optionswhether or not it writes an index (6.0.1, the latest, and its current master), and its feature encoder is private, so there is no public way to write a FlatGeobuf without that file. Writing the format ourselves would mean re-implementing the encoder on a new directflatbuffersdependency. The better fix is upstream: a way to give the writer an in-memory store (or to skip it when there's no index). Once that ships, the web app can offer FlatGeobuf again. The change.
fgb::write_features, the one place FlatGeobuf is written (whole-layer exports,io::write_bytes_in, and the streamed exports of perf(data): export a streamed layer a chunk at a time #1146), refuses in the browser before it creates the writer: "unsupported file type: FlatGeobuf in the browser", as GeoPackage already is. Any route to it in the web app (the dialog, command search, a script, the AI Assistant) now gets that message instead of a dead app.dialogs::export_formats(web), which leaves out GeoPackage and FlatGeobuf; the desktop lists all of them.parquet.rs,export/tests.rs).Testing
cargo xtask ci(fmt, clippy-D warnings, the workspace tests, layers): passes (2,888 tests).cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web: passes, without warnings.dialogs::tests::the_web_export_dialog_offers_no_geopackage_or_flatgeobuf: opens Export Features in the app with a download service (the web app) and without (the desktop), opens its Format list and reads what it offers: no FlatGeobuf or GeoPackage on the web, both on the desktop.?embedand sent a one-layer project:ui.exportLayeras GeoJSON downloads; as FlatGeobuf it answers{"ok": false, "error": "unsupported file type: FlatGeobuf in the browser"}with no console error; a CSV export after it downloads, so the app is still running. The same steps on perf(data): export a streamed layer a chunk at a time #1146's preview aborted the app at the FlatGeobuf export.Related issue
