feat(labels): try alternate positions along lines - #1213
A line label disappears when its middle collides with another label, even when the rest of the line is free. With LabelClass::other_positions enabled, non-repeated Parallel and Curved labels now try the middle, then nearby places on either side (at most eight per visible stretch). A curved label can also leave a sharp bend at its middle for a straighter stretch.
Each alternative retains its angle and glyph geometry through turned/tilted views and terrain/roof lifts. Curved glyph layout is deferred until the preceding place fails; locked labels replay their selected index at a cached geographic anchor against full projected runs, so clipping, panning and zooming do not slide the label along the line. The anchor cache is runtime-only (serde(skip)), computed only when capturing a non-tilted lock and cleared when label changes invalidate it. The label still occupies one candidate slot. When every place fails, View Unplaced shows it once at the middle. With the option off, or with repeats, the existing path remains unchanged.
This completes the render-only first part of #1187. The distance/Above/Below model, command, importer and UI work remains the second part. This PR adds no dependencies or project-format fields and does not expose a new UI control.
Testing
cargo xtask ci passed: formatting, Clippy, workspace tests and layering. Render: 282 passed, 1 ignored.
pre-commit run --all-files passed.
Projection regressions reject unprojectable places without renumbering lock slots. Parallel and Curved siblings share one candidate slot, with at most eight physical camera bands and a shared per-frame budget of 160,000 curve layout attempts. A crowded regression uses successful layouts that subsequently collide.
Regression coverage: middle collision and sharp bend fallback; unchanged unblocked/default/repeated output; lock replay after clipping, pan and zoom; multipart/overrun anchors and endpoint rounding; actual turned/tilted rendering; terrain/roof translations preserving relative glyph offsets; drape/frame-coverage drawings preserving lock anchors; icons turning once; successful later-band placements not consuming the unplaced-preview cap; tilted unplaced previews using their visible anchor’s line direction; malformed lock slots never inventing a middle preview.
Lazy-layout tests count one layout when the middle fits, only the attempted layouts after a collision, and one layout for a locked index. A 4,000-candidate crowded curved-label test stays within eight layouts per candidate, without a wall-clock assertion.
Failed previews are collected only when View Unplaced is enabled, with at most 2,000 finalized previews and one pending preview per band group. Rejected curved layouts reuse glyph/String allocations; terrain and roof offsets are evaluated per placement.
UI evidence
Actual RustGIS renderer output from the regression's made-up road and point data. The only setting changed is other_positions. Images were visually inspected and losslessly encoded as WebP; proposed in rustgis-assets#14.
Main currently stores LabelKey → u8. #1128 changes the value to LockedPlace { place, callout }. Whichever PR lands second must adapt the lookup to .place and the capture/restore sites (including frame_coverage) to preserve the new value and callout state. This PR keeps the current main API until that change lands.

Walkthrough
The renderer now supports nearby alternatives for non-repeated parallel and curved line labels when other_positions is enabled. Curved glyph layout can be deferred until collision placement. Candidate geometry is transformed through view changes and terrain or extrusion lifts. Selected line anchors can be saved for locked placements.
New placement data holds curve specifications, candidate positions, and queued transforms. Line helpers provide anchors, nearest-point lookup, and bounded alternatives.
Non-repeated line labels can store nearby alternatives. Curved candidates retain deferred layout data. Candidate geometry is transformed for terrain, extrusion, tilted, and turned views; tilted placement retains bounded line-band fallbacks.
Locked line anchors and state preservation crates/map/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/layout.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/*
The map stores geographic anchors for locked line placements without serializing them. Lock changes and map duplication clear the anchors. Temporary rendering paths save and restore them.
Collision selection and validation crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/line_positions_tests.rs
Collision placement evaluates alternatives and records selected line anchors. Tests cover blockers, locks, transformations, fallback placement, and bounded layout work.

Mergeable with bounded follow-up: line alternatives can use an incorrect terrain offset, and changing repeat settings while labels are locked can hide a label until unlocking. Fixing these localized rendering issues before merge is preferable.

Explanation
The title "feat(labels): try alternate positions along lines" matches the main change: non-repeated Parallel and Curved line labels now try alternate placements along the line when other_positions is enabled. It is specific, concise, and follows a conventional commit style. The title does not mention the curved-label deferred layout or the lock anchor cache, but those are supporting details.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template and is mostly complete. It has a Summary that explains the change, why it is needed (a line label vanishes when its middle collides), and the scope (render-only part 1 of #1187). It has a Testing section with concrete commands, results, and regression coverage. It has a UI evidence section with before and after images that are hosted in an external assets PR, so the image links depend on an open PR. It has a Related issue section that says the work is part 1 of #1187. The template's Summary, Testing, UI evidence, and Related issue headings are all present and filled in. Minor gaps: the Testing section reports a render test count of 282 while the objectives text reports 276, which is a discrepancy the author should reconcile. The Related issue section uses a 'Part of #1187' reference, which fits the template. The description is long and includes detail beyond the template (such as an integration note for #1128), but the required information is present.

A rabbit watched the road labels glide As curved glyphs waited, then took stride Near bends, new places came to view A saved anchor held them true The bunny hopped beneath the map And tucked its ears in one last gap
I found no correctness bugs in the changed code. I traced the new LabelPlace swap logic through place_labels, tilt_candidate, and the turned-view loop in render_frame, and the behaviour for existing point alternatives is unchanged. The findings are maintainability and test-coverage notes.
Bugs
None found. I checked the swap/take sequence in place_labels across the at = Some(...) and continue paths, and the restore of the original geometry in the all-collide case. Both are correct.
Security
None. The diff adds no parsing, I/O, or unsafe code, and no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code.
Performance
LabelPlace::of(&c.label) in tilt_candidate clones each curved label's glyph Vec, and every LabelGlyph owns a String. This runs once per curved label per tilted frame. Confidence: low. Probably fine at typical label counts. (crates/render/src/lib.rs:4490)
Quality
LabelPlace::from((x, y)) sets angle: None. Once swap or transform runs, a candidate's own angle is overwritten. This is safe today because only point candidates get alternatives and point labels never carry an angle. The invariant is implicit and should be documented. Confidence: medium. (crates/render/src/lib.rs:1860)
LabelPlace::take empties l.glyphs as a hidden side effect, so the label is half-formed until the next swap. The logic is correct, but the name and the doc don't say so. Confidence: medium. (crates/render/src/lib.rs:1870)
Nit: the filter_map in tilt_candidate mutates c.label from inside an iterator adaptor. Readable, but a plain loop would be clearer.
Tests
The turned-view transform of alternatives (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3927) has no test. The tilted-view test covers only tilt_candidate. Confidence: medium.
The lift and raise paths now translate alternatives. Glyph offsets are relative to x/y, so they should be unaffected, but no test covers this. Confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
No violations. No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, no unsafe, no new dependencies, no user-visible strings, and the change is confined to the render layer.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 1caa718 to PR head aaa526f).
I found no correctness bugs that can be reached through normal input. I could not compile or run the tests here (no Bash), so the checks below come from reading the diff and the code it calls. Inline comments are posted on five lines.
Bugs
Latent: straight Parallel alternatives can be dropped. If the middle parallel call fails, the candidate is never created and its alternatives are discarded. Normal input can't reach this, because positions keeps every alternative inside the same range the middle must already pass. Confidence: low-medium. (inline, lib.rs:3802)
Security
None found. The change is render-only and adds no parsing or I/O.
Performance
Layout is lazy and bounded at eight places per candidate, and the placement path does not add extra allocations beyond what the existing code does. I found nothing to flag.
Quality
Doc is wrong.Curves::anchor_in says it serves "band deduplication and height lifting", but its only caller is tilt_candidate. Confidence: high. (inline, label_places.rs:49)
Duplicated formula. The curve width in render_frame repeats Line::curved's length formula. The two copies must agree, so a shared helper would be safer. Confidence: medium-high. (inline, lib.rs:3774)
Large duplication. The new curved and straight branches repeat most of the existing repeat/curve code in render_frame. Consider factoring it out. Confidence: medium.
Shadowed names. In place_labels, c is used for the collide spec and again for the closure parameter and match arm of Curves. Confidence: high, nit.
Tests
Wall-clock assertion. The 5-second elapsed check in the dense-label test can flake on slow debug or Windows/macOS runners. The layout-count bound already covers the budget. Confidence: medium-low. (inline, line_positions_tests.rs:189)
The regression coverage matches the PR description: middle collision, sharp bends, lock replay after a pan, turned and tilted rendering, and terrain and roof translation.
AGENTS.md
No non-test unwrap, expect, panic, or indexing was added. Non-test code uses get().
No new UI strings were added, so the translation rules don't apply.
No std::time or new platform-specific calls were added below apps/. The only web_time/std::fs use is in #[cfg(test)].
The PR states its test results and attaches the UI evidence, which the guidelines ask for.

I found no crash, security, or data-loss issues. The main concern is a lock that can drift after a pan. Five inline comments are posted. I checked the diff against pr-context/AGENTS.md, the render-crate surroundings, and Path::at, which clamps past the ends instead of returning None.
Bugs
Locked curve and straight-line indices are relative to positions derived from longest_on_screen, the longest stretch in view. A pan that clips a different part of the line can move the locked label to another place. The lock test pans with the line fully visible, so it misses this. (~50%, lib.rs:3806)
turn_candidate discards the bool from LabelPlace::transform, so a failed alternative keeps source-view coordinates. This is unreachable today because the turned view's at always returns Some. (~35%, lib.rs:4649, with a suggestion)
Security
None found.
Performance
place_tilted_labels pushes every band's sibling into first.fallbacks with no cap. The take(20_000) bound applies only to top-level groups, and each failing sibling can cost up to eight curve layouts. Realistic band counts are small. (~30%, lib.rs:2326)
Quality
A locked line whose alternative is missing is now dropped (continue), while a point keeps its own place. The two cases are inconsistent unless that is intended. (~40%, lib.rs:3888)
Nit: the outermost positions sit exactly on upright's strict limit, so float rounding can silently reject them. (~30%, line_labels.rs:237)
Nit: line_positions_tests.rs writes PNGs when RUSTGIS_LINE_LABEL_EVIDENCE_DIR is set. This is a debug hook left in a test (not commented inline).
AGENTS.md
The PR body embeds screenshots from a contributor fork (raw.githubusercontent.com/choupeanut/... at a pinned commit). AGENTS.md says images are served from assets.rustgis.app/images/…. Point them at the canonical location once rustgis-assets#14 merges. (~60%)
The never-silent and never-panic rules are met: no non-test unwrap, and the placement fallbacks are tested both ways.

3835-3836: Minor · Potential issue · Heavy lift
New line alternatives can be far from their primary anchor, but the tilted terrain path samples one lift at c.label and applies that same shift to every alternative and deferred curve position.
The selected label can hover above or sink into the terrain instead of following its road.
This can occur when: An alternative is selected on a stretch of road whose terrain elevation differs appreciably from the primary anchor's elevation.

Update the tilted-terrain label placement that uses line_labels::positions so
each alternative and deferred curve position gets a lift sampled at its own road
anchor, rather than reusing the lift sampled at c.label. Preserve the existing
primary-anchor behavior.
Reject straight alternatives whose baseline direction does not project.
1894-1897: Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff
Reject straight alternatives whose baseline direction does not project.
transform rejects a place when a glyph's baseline direction does not project, but it does not reject one when the straight label's angle does not. turn_with then keeps the source-view angle. The place can be selected and drawn with that stale angle.

Review comment at @crates/render/src/lib.rs around lines 1894 - 1897:
Update the place validation in transform to reject a glyph when its
straight-label angle does not project, in addition to the existing position and
baseline-direction checks; this prevents turn_with from retaining a stale
source-view angle.
Add a test for two failing bands that share a feature key.
Add a test for two failing bands that share a feature key.
The current code keeps one failed preview per feature key. The test at line_positions_tests.rs:276-279 places a successful later band, which removes every failed preview for that key. It therefore does not check the failed-preview gate. Without a successful sibling, removing the failed_curves check in place_labels would add a second unplaced entry for the same key. This is a test-coverage gap, not a current defect.

Add a test alongside the existing `place_tilted_labels` coverage that passes two
failing bands with the same feature key and asserts there are no placed labels

the failed-preview deduplication gate without a successful sibling removing the

Follow-up in aeb25bf also addresses the summary notes: documented ready/deferred slot numbering versus band siblings, reused the existing key, and clear the geographic anchor cache whenever label changes, style application or map duplication invalidate the lock. Temporary unplaced previews remain bounded by candidate heads; applying the final 2,000 cap after successful-group filtering is intentional to preserve genuine unplaced labels (covered by the existing regression). The PNG/environment hook is removed. Local full CI, pre-commit and wasm32 build pass. The screenshot assets PR remains open, so the existing pinned preview URLs are retained until canonical assets are available.
Terrain lift is applied uniformly to line alternatives and deferred curves (medium, ~60%). lift_labels takes one offset from the candidate's middle and shifts every alternative and curve position by it. Terrain height varies by location, so alternatives on a different slope float or sink. Posted inline at crates/render/src/lib.rs:2197.
Performance
Anchor back-projection still runs on tilted frames while locked (medium-low, ~50%). The gate added in the earlier fix does not cover this case, because tilted renders take the lock and see lock == None. Posted inline at crates/render/src/lib.rs:3837.
Per-frame locked replay projects every vertex of each locked line (low). line_near_anchor projects the whole feature for each locked label. This is about as costly as the longest_on_screen pass it replaces, so I am noting it rather than raising it.
Quality
Stale docs in crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1842 and :2262 (high). They say other_positions applies to "a point's label" and "the places round a point". Line labels now use it too. This file is outside the diff, so I did not post it inline.
Anchors are indexed by place number, but straight alternatives are compacted (low, ~25%). line.anchors.get(i) uses the place index. line_alternatives skips any position where parallel fails. Current geometry never fails within the allowed range, so this is latent. Keeping slots stable would make it robust.
lift_labels / raise_labels store an offset and re-add it (nit). The old code assigned the projected point directly, so the new l.x + (sx - l.x) can differ from sx by one ulp.
render_frame keeps growing. The new positions, anchors and others closures and the nested if curving branches make an already very large function harder to follow. Extracting the line-placement block would help.
AGENTS.md
Never silent (low, ~35%). When the shared 160,000-layout budget runs out, the remaining curved labels stop placing. Those with View Unplaced on show a middle preview; with it off, they vanish without a notice. The existing take(20_000) cap is also silent, so this follows the current pattern.
No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. The new test-only unwrap calls are fine.
No new interface strings, so no translation work is needed.
The PR adds a user-visible change to line labels. The stale docs above are the only doc gap I found.
Prior reviews
The PR has 27 earlier review threads. I left 26 alone. One unresolved thread (turn_candidate taking a fallible projection) is unchanged, so I did not re-raise it. The anchor-gate thread is raised again as a new case: the fix is correct for lock-off frames but not for locked tilted frames.
Checked
I read the full diff, the staged metadata and all prior threads. I checked lock and anchor save/restore across every label_lock site, including the drapes, frame_coverage and the tilted paths. The projection, glyph and placement logic in place_labels and Curves looked sound on reading. I did not run the test suite. I only had read access and no build.

Assert the line anchor cache in the invalid-slot test.
The test an_invalid_locked_straight_slot_never_invents_a_middle_preview checks only that labels and unplaced are empty. Its comment says the valid lock's geographic anchor stays put, but no assertion reads label_lock_line_anchors. The current code keeps that cache on this path, so a change that cleared it here would still pass. Capture the cache after the first render and assert that it is unchanged after the invalid-slot render.

Performance
crates/render/src/lib.rs:4948: place_labels now collects every failed label with text into unplaced and applies the 2,000 cap only after filtering at the end. The earlier cap was applied during collection. With View Unplaced off, a crowded frame still builds up to 20,000 entries and discards them. Confidence ~45%. Inline comment posted.
crates/render/src/label_places.rs:110: each Curves::place attempt clones every grapheme String, and transform projects each glyph twice before turn_with. The 160,000 budget bounds this, but the per-attempt cost is high. Confidence ~30%. Inline comment posted. This is a different site from the resolved LabelPlace::of clone thread.
Quality
crates/render/src/lib.rs:3918: anchors is indexed by position, but line_alternatives skips positions whose parallel call fails, so slot numbers and cached anchors can drift apart. Probably unreachable, since positions is built to fit the same bounds. Confidence ~25%. Inline comment posted.
crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1842 (nit, high confidence): the other_positions field doc still says "A point's label". It now also applies to lines. The inline comment could not attach because this file is not in the diff, so the suggested wording is here: "A label taken by another tries the other places round it (for a point, the LabelPlacement::alternatives; for a line, nearby stretches) before it is left out ([Feature]: Point labels try other positions around the point when the chosen one collides #1011). Off by default: placed elsewhere, a label may take the place another has today."
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic!, or unsafe in non-test code. Every unwrap added in the diff is inside test code.
No std::time, eprintln!, or new dependencies. The changes stay in the render, map, and engine layers.
Lock-clearing sites were checked: items.rs, labels.rs, navigate.rs, layout.rs, and the drapes.
The PR body names QGIS only in pre-existing comments, not in new code.
Earlier review threads: I left 30 earlier concerns alone because they were already raised. Most are resolved. Three open threads (repeat relock, per-place terrain lift, tilted anchor gate) appear addressed in this head. The new findings above are not re-raises of those threads.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 92dc732 to PR head 02c78bc).
Scope: all 11 changed files, read against the base-branch AGENTS.md and the 33 existing review threads. I could not build or run the tests here; the PR reports cargo xtask ci, pre-commit and the wasm build as passing.
Bugs: none confirmed. I traced the new placement transforms (LabelPlace::transform/swap/take), the deferred curve layouts (Curves::place, shift_each, preview_in), the lock replay (line_near_anchor, Line::nearest, Path::at extrapolation) and the lock-clearing sites (render, drapes, frame_coverage, items.rs, labels.rs, navigate.rs). I found no path that loses or misplaces a label beyond the cases the existing threads already discuss.
Security: none found. The change is render-only and adds no parsing of untrusted input.
Performance: nothing new beyond existing threads. Per-attempt cost is O(glyphs) inside the shared 160,000-layout budget. That was raised earlier in the clone thread at label_places.rs:110, so I did not repost it.
Quality: nothing new worth an inline comment.
AGENTS.md: no violations in the changed non-test code. I found no unwrap, expect, panic, unsafe, or new user-visible strings. The new label_lock_line_anchors is cleared at every site that clears label_lock. Nothing below apps/ breaks wasm.
Latent (one inline comment posted):
crates/render/src/lib.rs:2453 (~25% confidence): raise_labels applies the middle's roof offset to all alternatives and curves. Unreachable today, since only polygon layers are extruded and only point and line candidates get alternatives or curves.
Earlier concerns left alone: 33 threads were already on the PR. I did not repost any of them. Of those, 4 are still open with no reply and their code is unchanged or only partly changed: the unbounded unplaced collection (lib.rs around 4964; now gated by show_unplaced, but still uncapped while View Unplaced is on), the per-attempt glyph clone (label_places.rs:110), and the two low-confidence notes on the place_labels budget. The other 29 are resolved in the head or were already answered.

Inconsistent handling of an invalid lock on curved line labels (bug, ~45% confidence). A straight line whose saved index has no representable place is now omitted, and the comment at ~3963 says there is "no truthful View Unplaced preview". A curved line never reaches that continue: its middle preview is always pushed here, and place_labels_with_previews then shows it in View Unplaced. When the lock index is malformed (for example u8::MAX in a stale project) and the saved anchor exists, that preview is drawn at the saved anchor, which belongs to a different slot. Without a saved anchor it is drawn at the middle. Either omit the curved preview when locked names a slot the curve cannot take, or add a regression matching an_invalid_locked_straight_slot_never_invents_a_middle_preview for curves.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Shared curve budget can starve later labels (behaviour, ~30% confidence).layouts_left is spent by every curve attempt in priority order, including band fallbacks. A group head can therefore use up to 8 × 8 attempts, so 20,000 colliding tilted groups can exhaust 160,000 attempts. Once it reaches zero, the break above drops every later curved label before its first place is tried, even when that place would fit. The only signal is View Unplaced, and that is hidden by default, so the loss is silent. The bound itself is reasonable. Consider reporting how many curved labels hit the budget, or letting the middle try run before the budget check.
I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and all 60+ prior review threads. I checked the lock write sites, the capture and replay projection pairs, glyph re-projection in turn_with, and Path bounds. I found no crash path, no unwrap in non-test code, and no wasm or layering problem. The lock state stays consistent across the write sites.
Bugs
Curved line labels with an invalid saved lock index still get a middle preview in View Unplaced, while straight lines omit it. The comment at ~3963 says no truthful preview exists. ~45% confidence. Inline comment posted at crates/render/src/lib.rs:3874.
Performance
The shared 160,000-attempt curve budget can run out through band fallbacks. Later curved labels are then dropped before their first place is tried, and nothing is reported unless View Unplaced is on. ~30% confidence. Inline comment posted at crates/render/src/lib.rs:4898.
Security
Nothing found.
Quality
Nits, left for the release quality pass: the doc comment on place_tilted_labels breaks mid-sentence at "Extruded / features'". The #[cfg(test)] on place_labels sits between a doc comment and its function. Confidence high, low impact.
AGENTS.md
No new user-visible strings, no new dependencies, and no unwrap, panic or unsafe in non-test code. Confidence medium-high. The "never silent" concern from the budget finding above is the only possible gap.
Prior concerns: I left 46 earlier threads alone because they are already raised or answered, and I did not re-post them.

…er curve budget
An invalid locked slot on a curved line no longer draws a View Unplaced
preview, matching straight lines. The shared curve layout budget now only
limits alternatives, so a label's own place is always tried.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Likely test failure, and the stated 160,000-layout bound is not a hard cap (bug, ~75% confidence; I could not run tests). This is a re-raise: the earlier shared-budget thread was answered with "reaches the bound exactly", which the code does not do.
In place_labels_with_previews (crates/render/src/lib.rs:4936-4942) the budget check is if layouts_left == 0 && i > 0 { break; }. The first place of every sibling (i == 0) is always laid out, and the counter is saturating. Here 2,600 groups × 8 siblings = 20,800 siblings, each with 8 positions. The first 20,000 siblings use 8 layouts each and exhaust the 160,000 budget exactly. The remaining 800 siblings each still lay out their middle, so LAYOUTS should read 160,800, not the asserted 160,000.
Either the assertion should be the real bound, or the middle-always rule should be documented as an extra one-per-sibling allowance. As written, the worst case is about 160,000 + one per sibling, roughly 320,000 layouts per frame, not the 160,000 that the PR description states.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance: the layout budget counts attempts, but each attempt projects every glyph several times (~40% confidence).place() runs LabelPlace::transform for each Change::Project. transform (crates/render/src/lib.rs:1902-1925) checks every glyph with at and turned_angle (about four at calls per glyph), then turn_with projects them again. For a 20-glyph label that is roughly 100+ projections per attempt, and up to 8 attempts per label. In a tilted view with many colliding curved labels, a frame can reach millions of projections, and the 160,000-attempt budget does not limit that cost.
Options: weight the budget by glyph count, or validate the glyphs once per candidate instead of on every attempt, since the projection is the same for every attempt on a band.
The shared-budget test colliding_band_groups_share_a_frame_layout_budget asserts exactly 160,000 layouts. By my reading the run reaches 160,800. The first place of each sibling is always laid out, even after the budget is spent, so the stated 160,000 bound is not a hard cap; the worst case is about 320,000 per frame. This re-raises the earlier shared-budget thread, because the reply that the bound is "reached exactly" does not match the code. Confidence about 75%. I could not run the tests. [Inline comment posted.]
The rest of the logic checked out on reading: the lock-anchor replay coordinates (flat and globe), the drape, frame-coverage and tilted paths for anchor save/restore, and the same_places repeat relock. I found no other concrete bug.
Security
None found. The change adds no input parsing, no I/O and no new dependencies.
Performance
Each curve layout attempt runs LabelPlace::transform, which projects every glyph several times. The 160,000-attempt budget does not limit that per-glyph cost, so a tilted view with many colliding curved labels can do millions of projections per frame. Confidence about 40%. [Inline comment posted.]
Point labels with other_positions now collect a Vec on every call to others() in render_frame (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3949). The old code used a lazy iterator on the locked path. This is minor. Confidence about 25%.
Quality (grouped nits; left for the release quality pass)
Curves::place in crates/render/src/label_places.rs:104 shadows the outer i with the glyph index.
The projection loop in shift_each duplicates the Change match in place, and the offset closures are duplicated between lift_labels and raise_labels.
The symbology.rs doc comment for other_positions breaks mid-sentence ("Off by default: placed / elsewhere").
AGENTS.md
No violations found in non-test code. unwrap is allowed in tests by clippy.toml. No new user-visible strings. The changes below the apps/ layer do not touch wasm-only paths.
Earlier "never silent" concerns (locked slots that cannot be represented are hidden without a notice) were answered as intentional, so I did not raise them again.
Prior reviews
I left about 30 earlier concerns alone because they were already answered or resolved. I re-raised one: the shared budget (see Bugs).
Change size
Compared with main (merge base 92dc732 to PR head 39310fd), the whole PR.
I found no new bugs in the changed code. I could not build or run tests here (no shell), so the checks below are by reading. No inline comments were posted: the findings below are minor and new, and the open correctness concern is already on its thread.
Bugs
None new.
Security
None found. The diff adds no I/O, parsing or credential handling. The new lock anchors are runtime-only (serde(skip)).
Performance
line_near_anchor (crates/render/src/lib.rs, ~4728) builds a Line for every run of every locked feature on each frame, where the old code built one for the visible longest run. Cost is linear in vertices, so it is probably fine, but it is worth a profile on large line layers. Confidence: low (~30%).
Quality
crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:161-163: the comment "on elsewhere it would do nothing" is no longer true for non-repeated Parallel and Curved line layers. The guard still refuses otherPositions on lines, which fits the PR's note that the command is part two, so only the comment needs rewording. Confidence: ~70%.
tilt_candidate (straight path) drops failed alternatives, which compacts slot numbers. turn_candidate keeps invalid slots as NaN, and its doc says slots are kept so lock indices stay stable. There is no effect today, because tilted views never capture or replay a lock. Confidence: ~50%.
Curves::preview_in reads raw anchors and ignores changes already recorded in Curves.changes. It is only correct because tilt_candidate runs before lift_labels and raise_labels. A debug_assert! or a doc line would make that explicit. Confidence: ~35%.
crates/map/src/symbology.rs, the other_positions doc: the line "Off by default: placed" wraps onto "elsewhere, …", which reads awkwardly. Nit.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic, unreachable, todo or unsafe in non-test code in the diff. No std::time use, so wasm is unaffected. No new interface strings. Layering holds (render depends on map, not the reverse). Screenshots are linked by URL, as the rules ask.
Not checked: cargo xtask ci and the wasm build. The PR body reports both as passing.
Earlier concerns left alone: 38 review threads already exist on this PR. 34 are resolved or outdated and I did not re-raise them. Of the 4 open threads:
lib.rs ~3907 (curved lock with an invalid index drawing a middle preview): the won >= positions.len() guard in the curved branch appears to address it. The thread could be resolved.
lib.rs ~4938 (shared layout budget): the i == 0 placement is no longer starved. The remaining point, alternatives silently skipped when the budget runs out, is still open.
line_positions_tests.rs ~468: I traced it by hand and agree. Each curve has 8 positions, so the 20,800 siblings consume 160,000 layouts, then the 800 later siblings each lay out their middle. The count is 160,800, not the asserted 160,000.
label_places.rs ~115 (glyph projection cost per attempt): unanswered, so it stays with its thread.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base ccf06b7 to PR head 48d66dd). Sizes are file sizes, not line counts.

New evidence on the shared-budget assertion (bug, ~85% confidence; I could not run tests). Earlier threads raised the 20_000 * 8 expectation, but the arithmetic they used assumed eight positions per curve. For this geometry (line length 360, text width 40, overrun 10), line_labels::positions gives mid plus three nearer pairs and stops there: room is about 169.9998 and the fourth step is 170, so d > room and it breaks. That is 7 positions, not 8.
Consequences:
2,600 groups × 8 siblings × 7 positions = 145,600 layouts. The 160,000 budget is never reached, so this test never exercises the shared budget. The name colliding_band_groups_share_a_frame_layout_budget is therefore not true of it.
The assertion == 20_000 * 8 will fail at 145,600.
To exercise the budget, use more groups (3,000 gives 168,000 candidate layouts) and assert the bound the code actually guarantees. The budget applies to alternatives only, and each sibling after exhaustion still lays out its middle. With 3,000 groups that is 160,000 + 1,142 = 161,142, so assert <= 160_000 + sibling_count or the exact value. Also make the PR text match: the budget is 160,000 plus one middle layout per sibling after exhaustion, not a hard 160,000.
I read the full diff, prior-reviews.json, and the surrounding render, engine and map code. I could not run tests here, so the findings below come from reading the code.
Bugs
Shared-budget stress test never reaches its budget, and its expected count is wrong (~85%). Re-raised with new evidence in an inline comment at crates/render/src/line_positions_tests.rs:468. For that geometry line_labels::positions yields 7 positions, not 8, so the test does 145,600 layouts against a 160,000 budget and the == 20_000 * 8 assertion fails. The test does not exercise the budget as its name claims.
Budget bound is not 160,000 in practice (~75%, already raised in the earlier thread on this line). The middle is always laid out, so exhaustion yields 160,000 plus one middle per remaining sibling. The PR text should say so.
Security
No findings. No new input parsing, no file or network access, and no new dependencies.
Performance
Rejected curve placements re-project every glyph several times per attempt (~40%, already raised). Budget is counted per attempt, not per glyph.
Locked line replay re-projects full runs for each locked label every frame (~25%, new). line_near_anchor re-projects every part of a feature on each locked frame, with no per-feature cache. The cost is O(vertices) per labelled line, which is probably acceptable, but it is worth measuring on a large road layer.
Quality
line_labels::positions is asymmetric (~30%, nit). When the fourth step fits, the eighth slot is the negative side, so the nearest-either-side order favours the start of the line.
render_frame grows a large nested block (~—, maintainability). The new placement logic in render_frame and place_labels_with_previews is hard to follow. Leave the nits for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
"Never silent" on budget and cap truncation (~30%). When the 160,000 layout budget is exhausted, or the 2,000-entry unplaced cap is hit, alternatives and previews are dropped with no notice. The existing take(20_000) cap was already silent, so this may be acceptable, but it is worth a decision.
Never-crash rules hold in the new non-test code. I found no unwrap, expect, panic, indexing, or unsafe. All the new indexing uses get().
Lock and anchor sites are all covered. Every label_lock take/restore site (drapes, frame_coverage, tilted and GPU-turned paths) now handles label_lock_line_anchors, and every command that clears the lock clears the anchors.
I checked prior concerns and left alone the ones already raised and unchanged: the tilted-band anchor gating, the drape and frame_coverage anchor restore, the lift and roof per-place offsets, the LinePlaces grouping, and the 2,000-cap accounting. Only the stress-test count above is re-raised, because it carries new evidence.
Change size
Compared with base main (merge base ccf06b7 to PR head 715fcd4).
I found no confirmed bugs, security issues, or AGENTS.md violations in the changed code, so I posted no inline comments. I read the full diff, the base AGENTS.md, and all 39 prior threads, then checked the riskiest paths against source: lock anchors across drape, frame-coverage, and turned/tilted renders; the curve layout budget; terrain and roof offsets; deferred glyph projection; and non-test code for unwrap, expect, and unchecked indexing. I could not run the test suite here, so the test results below are from reading the code.
Bugs
None confirmed.
Open thread on colliding_band_groups_share_a_frame_layout_budget (its assertion lower bound): not reproduced. line_labels::positions returns 8 places for this geometry, because the fourth step equals room exactly and d > room is false. That gives 2,600 groups × 8 candidates × 8 places, so the budget runs out after 2,500 groups and the total is 160,800, inside the asserted range. Confidence the test passes: about 85%.
Security
None. The anchor map is serde(skip), and the change adds no input parsing or I/O.
Performance
Already raised, still applies (open thread): each curved place attempt re-projects every glyph several times, and the 160,000-attempt budget limits the count, not the cost. Confidence about 40%. Left alone.
Quality (low confidence, for the release quality pass)
place_tilted_labels (around lib.rs 2326–2340): once a feature has MAX_TILT_BANDS - 1 fallbacks, further siblings are dropped with no notice. The renderer cannot produce more than eight bands per feature, so this is unreachable today. The stress test a_nearer_bands_unlayoutable_curve_does_not_claim_the_feature_key asserts the viable sibling is dropped (labels.is_empty()), which differs from the thread reply's description. Confidence about 35%.
Doc wrap nits: the other_positions doc in symbology.rs has a dangling "Off by default: placed" line, and the place_tilted_labels doc has a dangling "Extruded" line. Confidence high, low impact.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic, or unchecked indexing in non-test code. No new dependencies, new interface strings, or std::time use. The new thread_local is test-only. Layering is unchanged.
Never silent (open thread, left alone): when the shared curve budget is spent, later curved labels silently lose their alternatives. View Unplaced is the only signal, and it is off by default.
Earlier concerns
39 threads in total. 34 are resolved or outdated, and I checked the fixes for the invalid-lock preview, drape anchor restore, per-place terrain lift, repeat relock, band grouping, and the unplaced cap.
I left 5 open threads alone:
the invalid curved-lock preview, now handled: the lock check continues before the middle preview, and an_invalid_locked_curved_slot_never_invents_a_middle_preview covers it;
the per-attempt projection cost;
the budget silence;
two threads on the layout-count assertion, which I checked and do not reproduce.

Summary
A line label disappears when its middle collides with another label, even when the rest of the line is free. With
LabelClass::other_positionsenabled, non-repeated Parallel and Curved labels now try the middle, then nearby places on either side (at most eight per visible stretch). The anchor cache is runtime-only (
serde(skip)), computed only when capturing a non-tilted lock and cleared when label changes invalidate it.
Testing
cargo xtask cipassed: formatting, Clippy, workspace tests and layering. Render: 282 passed, 1 ignored.pre-commit run --all-filespassed.Projection regressions reject unprojectable places without renumbering lock slots. Parallel and Curved siblings share one candidate slot, with at most eight physical camera bands and a shared per-frame budget of 160,000 curve layout attempts. A crowded regression uses successful layouts that subsequently collide.
Regression coverage: middle collision and sharp bend fallback; unchanged unblocked/default/repeated output; lock replay after clipping, pan and zoom; multipart/overrun anchors and endpoint rounding; actual turned/tilted rendering; terrain/roof translations preserving relative glyph offsets; drape/frame-coverage drawings preserving lock anchors; icons turning once; successful later-band placements not consuming the unplaced-preview cap; tilted unplaced previews using their visible anchor’s line direction; malformed lock slots never inventing a middle preview.
Lazy-layout tests count one layout when the middle fits, only the attempted layouts after a collision, and one layout for a locked index. A 4,000-candidate crowded curved-label test stays within eight layouts per candidate, without a wall-clock assertion.
cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-webpassed.Failed previews are collected only when View Unplaced is enabled, with at most 2,000 finalized previews and one pending preview per band group. Rejected curved layouts reuse glyph/String allocations; terrain and roof offsets are evaluated per placement.
UI evidence
Actual RustGIS renderer output from the regression's made-up road and point data. The only setting changed is
other_positions. Images were visually inspected and losslessly encoded as WebP; proposed in rustgis-assets#14.Integration with #1128

LabelKey → u8. #1128 changes the value toLockedPlace { place, callout }. Whichever PR lands second must adapt the lookup to.placeand the capture/restore sites (includingframe_coverage) to preserve the new value and callout state.
