fix(ui): allow selecting a field before applying unique symbology - #738
When selecting Unique Values for a layer with text attributes, the UI now
shows a field selector before applying the renderer. This fixes the
“field is required” error for layers such as Permukiman.
Testing
cargo fmt --all --check
Added a regression test for selecting a text field before applying Unique Values.
The targeted Cargo test could not run because the configured registry proxy
at 127.0.0.1:18372 was unavailable.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
When choosing Unique Values, select a layer field before applying the symbology. The selector defaults to the first non-numeric field, or the first field if all fields are numeric.
Required tool inputs can now be satisfied by setting a parameter value, even when the corresponding layer port is not connected.
Bug Fixes
Applying a symbology change successfully clears the pending field selection. Failed changes retain it so you can try again.
Pending selections are cleared when the project, map, layer, renderer, or undo state changes, or when a renderer is applied elsewhere.
Visible identification results now include vector-tile features.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The Symbology pane now supports choosing a field before applying Unique Values. Pending choices include project, map, layer, and renderer context. The PR also updates vector-tile identification and tool parameter validation, and rewrites several existing condition checks.
Pending state records the project, active map, layer, renderer snapshot, and field. The app and pane clear the choice when its context no longer matches.
Select and apply the field crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs
The pane defaults to the first non-numeric field, or the first field if all fields are numeric. It provides a field selector and Apply action. A failed command keeps the choice pending and displays a notification; successful application clears it. Smoke tests cover field selection, failed commands, and context changes.

Vector-tile lookup now runs for Visible mode under the stated conditions. Required tool parameters pass validation when their layer port is wired or their value is set; nonempty defaults also satisfy the requirement.

A rabbit taps a field to choose, Then waits until the map says “use.” If context shifts, the choice takes flight, If Apply works, it clears from sight. Hop, hop, the colors bloom anew!
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
The change is small and mostly sound. Clicking Unique Values in the Symbology pane now opens a field picker with an Apply button instead of applying immediately. I couldn't run clippy or the tests here. All findings come from reading the diff and the surrounding code. I posted one inline comment covering all three points below.
Bugs
Stale picker (medium): the pending picker stays open if the user then clicks another symbology type such as Single or Graduated. symbology_pending should be cleared in the non-unique branch of the type click handler.
Quality
Default field (low): the default is all.first(), which may be an ID or numeric column. The new test is named for a "text field", so preferring the first text field and falling back to the first field would be a better default.
Collapsible if (medium):if ui.button(..).clicked() { if app.run(..).is_ok() { .. } } has no else, so clippy::collapsible_if will probably fire under CI's -D warnings. Merge the two conditions with &&.
Security
Nothing found.
Performance
Nothing found. The field-name vectors are now built before the early-return checks, which is a small cost per frame.
AGENTS.md
Translatable text: the new tl!("Field") and tl!("Apply") follow the translation rule.
No panics: no unwrap(), expect() or panicking indexing was added in non-test code. The test module uses unwrap, which is allowed there.
Tests: a smoke test covers applying the picked field.

The PR adds a field picker with an Apply button in the Symbology pane, so Unique Values no longer applies immediately with a default field. I found two issues. I only read the diff and the surrounding panes.rs lines. I did not build the code, run clippy, or run the tests.
Bugs
Pending state is restored after Apply (high confidence).crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs around line 3234. If the user picks a different field and clicks Apply, symbology_pending is cleared. The following if selected != pending_field check is still true, so it sets symbology_pending again. The picker row stays visible after a successful apply. The new smoke test only applies the default field, so it doesn't catch this. I suggest a test that changes the combo before clicking Apply.
Quality
Clippy collapsible_else_if (high confidence).crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs around line 3209. else { if app.run(...).is_ok() { … } } should be else if. This would fail cargo xtask ci because it runs clippy with -D warnings.

Clear the pending Unique Values field when the active layer changes, before the early returns.
The check at lines 3145-3147 runs only after the no-layer and raster returns. If the user switches from vector layer A to a raster layer or to no active layer, the pending choice for A stays set. When the user returns to A, the pending check sees the same layer ID, keeps the choice, and shows the Field selector again with the old value. The Apply button then runs Unique Values with that stale field.
Move the clear above the early returns, and compare the pending layer with the active layer instead of the loaded layer:

The PR adds a field picker for Unique Values symbology in the Symbology pane. Clicking the Unique tile now sets symbology_pending, and the user picks a field and presses Apply. I found no bugs. I did not build the code or run the tests. I checked it by reading the diff against the surrounding code, and I left one inline comment.
Bugs
None found. symbology_pending is cleared when the active layer changes, when another symbology type is applied successfully, and after a successful Apply. A failed Apply keeps the picker and the chosen field. The no-fields case falls back to running the command directly.
Security
None. There is no new input handling, and the field name comes from the layer's own field list.
Performance
The numeric and all field vectors are now built before the early raster return's counterpart. That is cheap and the same work as before, just moved.
Quality
The Unique tile is not highlighted while a field is pending, so the click gives no visible feedback until Apply (confidence: low-medium, posted inline).
The new smoke test sets symbology_pending directly, so it never exercises the Unique tile click path. That path covers the default field choice, the no-fields fallback and the clearing on layer switch (confidence: medium, posted inline).
AGENTS.md
There are no unwrap/expect calls or unsafe in the new code.
The new labels "Field" and "Apply" use tl!.
The change is egui-only, so layering and wasm are unaffected.

Clear the pending choice after a successful renderer field update.
A user can select Unique Values in the pane, select a field from the ribbon's Unique Values menu, and then select another field in this field_combo. The renderer update succeeds, but symbology_pending remains set. Clicking Apply later runs the pending field again and silently replaces the field selected in field_combo.

The fix is small and mostly sound. I found no crash, security or wasm problems. I read the diff and the surrounding code in panes.rs but did not build the project or run any tests.
Bugs
None found. The pending state is cleared when the layer changes or an apply succeeds. A failed apply keeps the user's chosen field. (confidence: medium)
Security
Nothing to raise. The change is UI-only, with no file, network or parameter handling beyond the existing layer.symbology command.
Performance
numeric and all are now built before the raster early-out, and they are cloned from the fields every frame. The cost is trivial, and the numeric list was already built every frame before. (confidence: low)
Quality
UX, extra step: Clicking "Unique Values" now only stages a pending field. The user has to click Apply as well, and the type selector doesn't show the pending state. Applying straight away with the default field would keep the old one-click flow. (confidence: medium, inline comment)
Stale field: If the pending field disappears from the dataset, the combo box still shows it. This is a minor edge case. (confidence: low)
Test coverage: The new smoke test sets symbology_pending directly. It doesn't cover the "Unique Values" button, the default-field choice, the no-fields fallback or the clear-on-layer-switch behaviour. (confidence: medium, inline comment)
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or unsafe in the new code, and the new labels ("Field", "Apply") are wrapped in tl!.
The PR says the new test could not run (the registry proxy was unavailable). cargo xtask ci should be confirmed green before merge. (confidence: medium)
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 0fc00c9 to PR head 1f45e4c).
- Merge main's field-retry and No Fill controls with the Unique Values field picker.
- Highlight pending Unique symbology and recover when its field disappears.
- Exercise tile selection, a different text field and Apply through the real pane in the smoke test.
The change is small and follows the repo rules (no unwrap in non-test code, tl! on the new labels). It adds a field picker, with an Apply button, to the Symbology pane. The picker shows when the user clicks Unique Values, so the field is no longer picked silently. I only read the diff and the surrounding code. I did not build or run the tests.
Bugs
Medium confidence. The Apply button in panes.rs:3467 drops the Err from layer.symbology (it only checks .is_ok()). If applying fails, the user gets no feedback and the pane stays pending. The existing card-click path shows the error. I posted an inline comment on this.
Low confidence. If the user clicks a different symbology type while the picker is open and that command fails, symbology_pending stays set. The Unique Values card then stays highlighted and the picker stays visible next to the error. This is cosmetic.
Security
Nothing found. The field name comes from the layer's own field list and is passed to an existing command.
Performance
Nothing significant. symbology_pending.clone() and the numeric and all vectors are rebuilt each frame. That is cheap, and the vectors were already being built.
Quality
Nit.numeric and all are moved above the early returns so the cards can use all. This is fine, but they are now built even when the pending-error UI is unused.
Nit.selected is cloned just to build the JSON params at line 3467, which is unnecessary.
AGENTS.md
Nothing found. The new strings "Field" and "Apply" are wrapped in tl!, and there are no panics.
The new smoke test covers the happy path. A regression test for the failure case above would be useful.

I read the diff and the surrounding Symbology pane code. I found no blocking problems. I could not build or run anything here, so none of this was tested.
Bugs
None found.
Switching layers clears the pending choice. symbology() resets symbology_pending whenever its layer id differs from the current layer. It only runs while the Symbology pane is drawn, so a stale entry can survive while the pane is closed. The pending_id == l.id check stops it from showing on the wrong layer. (Confidence: high that this is harmless.)
The Apply path reports errors through app.session.notify(error, true). The pending state stays set after a failure, so the user can retry. (Confidence: medium. I did not check the notify signature.)
Quality
Probably dead code (medium confidence): Clicking Unique Values now always opens the field picker. It never calls layer.symbology with {"type": "unique"} directly. The existing PendingSymbology error flow for kind == "unique" is therefore probably only reachable through other paths. If it is no longer reachable, it could be simplified in a follow-up.
Extra click (low confidence): The default field is the first non-numeric one, but the user must press Apply even when that default is what they want. If so, the new flow adds a click compared with the old auto-apply. This is a product decision.
Highlight while pending (low confidence): While symbology_pending is set, the type buttons show "unique" as selected instead of the layer's real renderer. If the user leaves the pane without applying, the layer keeps its old renderer. The state is cleared only on a layer change or a successful apply. Consider also clearing it when the user cancels or switches to another type. Another type click does clear it on Ok.
Style nit:numeric and all moved above the early parts of symbology(). numeric is still used only in the later pending-error block. This is fine, but all.contains(&pending_field) runs on every frame while pending, which is negligible.
Security
None. The change only affects UI state and passes a field name that comes from the layer's own field list.
Performance
None. The two Vec<String> clones per frame were already being built, just later in the function.
AGENTS.md
The new labels "Field" and "Apply" use tl!, as required.
There is no unwrap or panic in the non-test code. The test's unwrap() calls are allowed.
No new dependencies, and everything stays in the ui-egui layer.

I read the full diff and the surrounding code in lib.rs, panes.rs and smoke.rs. I did not build the code or run any tests. The PR description says the targeted test could not be run.
The change adds a Field picker for Unique Values. The picked field is held in UiState::symbology_pending. The pending choice is dropped when the project, map, active layer or renderer changes. I found no blocking problems.
Bugs
None found. The stale-state handling holds up on read-through. The check runs in RustGisApp::run and again at the top of symbology(), which also covers commands that go straight through Session::run. Failed layer.symbology calls keep the choice for a retry. A successful call, or choosing another renderer button, clears it. (confidence: medium, since I couldn't run the tests)
Security
Nothing to report. The field name comes from the layer's own field list, and the command validates it.
Performance
PendingUniqueSymbology::is_current compares the whole Renderer after every command and on every frame the Symbology pane draws. A Unique renderer with many classes makes that comparison non-trivial. It only runs while a pending choice exists, so the impact is small. A cheaper change marker would help if this ever shows up in profiles. (confidence: low)
Arc is used for a value that is never shared across threads. A plain Renderer clone would be simpler. The Arc does make Clone cheap, because the pane clones symbology_pending every frame. (nit, confidence: low)
Quality
panes.rs: the numeric and all vectors moved above their first use, which is correct. The continue inside the renderer-button loop is easy to miss. An if/else would be clearer. (nit)
panes.rs: the new inline Field and Apply row duplicates part of the existing pending_symbology error-recovery field picker. A later cleanup could merge the two paths. (confidence: low)
panes.rs: when a layer has no fields, the Unique click falls through to layer.symbology without a field and fails, which shows the old error flow. That is acceptable but worth knowing about.
smoke.rs: the first test uses unwrap() and the second uses unreachable!. Both are fine in test code. The second test covers six invalidation scenarios, which is thorough.
AGENTS.md
The new strings are wrapped in tl!. No unwrap, expect or panic! was added in non-test code. The change stays in the egui layer. All good.
Tests were added for the new behavior. The author could not run them locally, so please confirm that CI runs cargo xtask ci green.

I read the whole diff and the surrounding RustGisApp::run. I did not build or run anything, because I have no Bash tool. No inline comments were posted. The concerns are about scope, not defects.
Bugs
None found (medium-high confidence).
I checked each boolean rewrite by hand and each is logically equivalent to the original. They are in navigate_bench.rs, main.rs, trend.rs (twice), agent.rs, raster/mod.rs, select.rs, model.rs, globe.rs, embeddings.rs and lib.rs.
The agent.rs rewrite uses Option::is_none_or, which needs Rust 1.82 or later. Please confirm the workspace MSRV allows it.
The new Unique Values flow holds up:
The pending choice is cleared after every RustGisApp::run once the project, map, layer or renderer changes.
It is also cleared in symbology() for commands that bypass run, such as session.run.
A failed Apply keeps the choice so the user can retry.
A layer with no fields falls back to the old path.
Security
None.
Performance
Renderer comparison on every command and frame (low confidence).is_current compares the layer's Renderer with == after each command and each frame the pane is open. For a Unique renderer with thousands of categories that is O(n). It only runs while a choice is pending, so I'd call it acceptable.
Quality
Scope creep (medium confidence).
About ten files get De Morgan rewrites with no connection to the symbology fix. They look like clippy nonminimal_bool cleanups. They are correct, but they make the PR harder to review and to revert.
Some are arguably less readable. !(!merc.is_empty() && …) in globe.rs is a double negation, and !(port && wired(p.name) || is_set(…)) in model.rs relies on && binding tighter than ||.
Consider moving them to a separate PR.
Apply error handling (low-medium confidence).
On a failed Apply, app.session.notify(error, true) is called. If Session::run already notifies on errors, the user sees the message twice. I did not confirm this.
The existing branch for the other symbology types stores the error in PendingSymbology instead.
Duplicated field-picker logic (low confidence).symbology_pending and the older PENDING_SYMBOLOGY egui temp-data path now both implement a field picker for Unique Values, in different places. A later change could merge them.
Tests (positive). There is a good regression test for the happy path. The second test covers six invalidation scenarios and the retry-after-failure case.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code. The new code uses get, first and Option combinators.
Translation: the new tl!("Field") and tl!("Apply") strings are wrapped. They are not added to the .tsv catalogs, which AGENTS.md allows.
Test code:unreachable!() appears only in test code, which is allowed.
PR description: it says the targeted test could not be run, so I'm assuming cargo xtask ci has not been run locally. Please confirm it passes (CI will show this).

Summary
When selecting Unique Values for a layer with text attributes, the UI now
shows a field selector before applying the renderer. This fixes the
“field is required” error for layers such as Permukiman.
