Summary

  • Default Unique Values to any available field, including text; require numeric fields for Graduated Colors and Proportional Symbols. A compatible current field is kept.
  • Keep the current renderer on a failed switch and expose a target-compatible field picker so users can retry.
  • The retry state stays local to the Symbology pane. It ends when the pane closes, when another project, map or layer comes into view, or when the layer's renderer changes by any path (pane, ribbon, agent, undo). The latest failure is shown beside the retry controls.
  • Add regression coverage and update the symbology guide.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci — passed.
  • cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web — passed (with Homebrew LLVM clang as the wasm C compiler).
  • Kittest coverage: failed Graduated switch, failed retry with the error kept, successful retry with another numeric field, no empty numeric picker, the pane closing, layer and map round trips (including a layer id shared across maps), and edits from the pane, the app and the session directly superseding a pending retry.
  • Headless UI: a failed retry keeps its error; a retry with a populated numeric field applies Graduated Colors under the active definition query.

Related issue

Closes #768.

Related to #738: that PR stages a Unique Values field choice before applying it. This PR focuses on command-level field defaults/fallbacks and lets users recover from a failed renderer switch with a target-specific field picker. The picker work here is complementary, not a claim that field selection in the Symbology UI is new.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Symbology now selects a suitable field automatically: numeric fields for Graduated Colors and Proportional Symbols, and any available field for Unique Values.
    • If a numeric field is unavailable, the current renderer remains unchanged and an error is shown. When numeric fields are available, you can choose one to retry the change.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the cartography guide to explain field selection, retry behavior, and when pending retries are cleared.

📝 Walkthrough

Renderer field defaults now follow each renderer’s field requirements. The Symbology pane retains failed renderer changes and offers eligible fields for retry. Tests and cartography documentation describe these behaviors.

Any Err from layer.symbology sets the pending picker, not just the "no field" failure. Other errors, such as an empty layer or a failed class computation, will show a field picker that can't help. When the user picks a field and app.run fails again, the error is dropped and the picker stays with no feedback.

The pending state is also temp data keyed by Id::new("symbology_pending_field"). It is never cleared when the user switches the active layer and comes back, or after edits elsewhere. Consider showing the error text next to the picker, and only entering the pending state when the error is the missing-field one.

The new strings are wrapped in tl!, which fits AGENTS.md. The pane-level behaviour has no test, and the screenshot flow could cover it.

Code review

The core fix in layer.rs is sound. The main concern is the new field picker in the UI. I read the diff and the surrounding symbology function in panes.rs. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • Pending-field picker triggers on any error (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, around line 3371; confidence: medium). Any Err from layer.symbology sets the pending state, not only the "no field" failure. Other errors will show a picker that can't help. A failure when applying the chosen field is silently dropped. The temp-data entry is also not cleared when the user changes layers. I left an inline comment on this.

Security

  • Nothing found.

Performance

  • Nothing found.

Quality

  • Behaviour change for Unique Values with no field (confidence: low). It now defaults to the first field of any type instead of the first numeric one. This is documented, and the new test covers it. The first column is often an id, so the default may be less useful.
  • UI has no test (confidence: low). The layer.rs change is well tested, including that a failed switch leaves the renderer and undo depth unchanged. The new picker has no test. The ui_shot example could cover it.

AGENTS.md

  • The new strings use tl!, there are no unwrap or panic calls in non-test code, and the docs are updated.
  • The test code uses panic! inside let else blocks. That is acceptable in tests.

Reopening this after comparing #738 with the full scope of #768. #738 adds a pre-apply field choice for Unique Values; this PR covers the command-level field defaults and the distinct failed-switch path—keep the current renderer, offer target-compatible fields (including for a failed Graduated Colors switch), and allow retry. It also gives a useful explanation when no numeric field exists. This complements #738 rather than replacing its picker.

The branch includes the follow-up cleanup in 0aed56c; cargo xtask ci passes.

Any error from layer.symbology opens the field picker, not only the "no field available" case. A failure for another reason (for example a bad definition query) would show a misleading "Choose a field" prompt. Consider setting the pending state only for the missing-field errors, or only when fields is non-empty. Also egui::Id::new("symbology_pending_field") is repeated three times; a shared const would be cleaner. Confidence: medium-low.

Code review

I read the diff and the changed code. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None found in the engine change. For Graduated Colors and Proportional Symbols, the current renderer's field is now reused only if it is numeric. Otherwise the first numeric field is used, with a clear error when none exists. A failed switch returns before the renderer is replaced, and the new test checks that nothing changes and no undo step is added. Confidence: high.
  • Pending field picker (panes.rs, medium-low confidence):
    • Any error from layer.symbology opens the "Choose a field" picker, not only the missing-field errors. A failure for another reason, such as a bad definition query, would show a misleading prompt (inline comment posted).
    • When fields is empty the ComboBox still renders with nothing to pick, and the explanation appears only below it.

Security

  • Nothing found. The change adds no new input handling or unwrap/panic in non-test code. The panic! calls are in tests only.

Performance

  • Nothing notable. field_index is a lookup done once per symbology call.

Quality

  • The Unique Values default field changed. It used to prefer a numeric field and now takes the first field of any type. The new behaviour is documented, and the test with text-only fields (g_id) covers it.
  • egui::Id::new("symbology_pending_field") is built in four places. A shared const would be tidier (covered in the inline comment).

AGENTS.md

  • New UI strings use tl!, and the catalogs do not need updating in the PR.
  • There are regression tests for the engine and the UI, and the docs are updated.
  • I could not confirm that cargo xtask ci passes.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the pending renderer choice when the active map changes.

A failed renderer choice stores (layer id, kind) in egui temp data. The stored key is only a layer ID, and layer IDs restart in each map. After a map switch, the new map's first layer can take the same ID, so the Symbology pane offers the old choice on that layer. Choosing a field applies the old renderer kind to the new map's active layer.

Scope of the fix: the key must identify the map as well as the layer. Alternatively, clear the pending entry in the map.activate path. Either change touches every reader and writer of symbology_pending_field.

Impact details
  • Pending is written only when layer.symbology fails (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:3359).
  • map.activate sets active_layer to the first layer of the new map (crates/engine/src/cmd/navigate.rs:190-191).
  • Each map starts its layer ID counter at 1 (crates/map/src/lib.rs:918). The first layer of each map usually has ID 1.
  • The cleanup at crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:3294-3295 keeps the entry when the stored ID equals the new active ID.
  • The display at crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:3375 filters only by layer ID.

Clear the pending renderer choice when the active layer changes, even while the Symbology pane is closed.

The cleanup at panes.rs:3294-3296 runs only inside symbology(). If the pane is closed during a layer round trip, the stored pending choice is not cleared. Reopening the pane for the original layer then shows the field picker again, even though the user moved away from that layer.

Possible approach

Run the pending-choice invariant from a place that executes on every frame, or clear the value in the layer-change path, rather than only in symbology(). The exact location is not verified, so this report does not include a diff.

Unverified concern: A failed picker retry leaves the picker open without displaying the retry error locally. For a numeric field that has no numeric values, selecting it may appear to do nothing.

Validation was inconclusive.

Potential consequence: The renderer remains unchanged and the picker gives no reason that field could not be applied.

Condition requiring verification: A pending Graduated Colors switch offers a numeric-typed field whose visible rows contain no numeric values, and the user selects it.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the pending field choice after any successful renderer edit.

A failed switch stores symbology_pending_field. The pane keeps showing "Choose a field to apply this renderer" until the user picks a field from it or the active layer changes. A successful edit through field_combo does not clear the stored value. The stale prompt stays visible. Selecting one of its fields then applies the earlier switch and replaces the renderer the user just edited.

The same gap applies to other successful renderer changes, including the graduated method and class controls and the ribbon's layer.symbology calls. A fix limited to field_combo covers only the reported trigger.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Show the field picker only for failures that a field choice can fix.

When the active layer's definition query excludes every feature, layer.symbology returns "no feature passes the definition query" for the Unique Values, Graduated Colors, and Proportional Symbols types. The pane's error branch treats every failure as a missing field. It stores a pending choice and shows "Choose a field to apply this renderer:". A field chosen from that list calls layer.symbology again with the same definition query, and the same error returns. The picker stays open with no message, so the user has no path to recovery in the pane. The user must change the definition query outside this picker.

The error text is only written to the log at crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1433-1435. The pane does not show it beside the picker. Show the picker only for field-related errors, or show the returned error text next to the picker so the user can see why the choice failed.

Why a field choice cannot help

In the Unique and Graduated arms, rows()? is evaluated before field(...)?. Rust evaluates arguments left to right, so the query error returns first. An explicit field parameter is only read inside the field closure, which is never reached.

Add a test for a numeric field with no values before the default-field choice.

The new graduated-default test checks only that the chosen field has a numeric type. It does not check that the field has values. The default choice in layer.rs does not check values either. A future change that picks an unusable first numeric field would still pass this test.

For a layer loaded from GeoJSON, a numeric field always has at least one non-null value. An all-null column is typed as Text. The default choice therefore cannot pick an empty numeric field on load. A field can become empty only through later edits, and this review did not verify which edit paths can do that.

Before adding a test, decide the intended behavior. The default should either skip an empty numeric field and use a later one, or fail with a clear error. The test should assert that behavior on a layer whose first numeric field has no values.

Add a UI test for the failed renderer switch and the picker retry.

The new test at crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4999-5020 only checks cleanup when the active layer changes. It writes the pending state directly with h.ctx.data_mut(...insert_temp(pending_id, ...)). It never calls app.run("layer.symbology", ...), so it does not exercise a failed switch.

No other test covers the UI path. The renderer button at panes.rs:3357-3363 records the pending choice when app.run fails. The picker at panes.rs:3380-3388 retries with a chosen field and clears the pending state when the retry succeeds. The only engine test for the failed switch is symbology_chooses_fields_by_renderer_requirements in crates/engine/src/tests.rs:2009-2037. It checks that the command returns an error, leaves the renderer unchanged, and adds no undo step. It stops before any retry. A regression in the button callback at panes.rs:3358-3362 or the picker callback at panes.rs:3383-3385 would leave the new test green.

Add a kittest case that does the following: set up a layer with no numeric field, click the Graduated Colors renderer button, confirm the picker appears, select a field, and confirm the renderer changes to Graduated. This test would detect a broken failure record or a broken retry.

it when an edit fails.
- Around line 3358-3359: Update the error handling around
`app.run("layer.symbology", ...)` so the field picker appears only for
field-related failures; for other errors, display the returned error text in the
pane so users can understand why choosing a field will not resolve the failure.

then select a field and verify the renderer changes to Graduated. This must
cover both recording the failed switch in the renderer button callback and
successfully retrying and clearing pending state in the picker callback.

Behaviour change worth a second look (confidence: medium): for Unique Values with no current field, the default is now the first field of any type. Previously a numeric field was preferred. On datasets whose first column is an ID or name, this builds one class per feature (and the unique renderer may hit its class cap or produce an unreadable legend). Consider preferring a low-cardinality/text field, or at least skipping fields where every value is distinct, instead of plain "first field".

Maintainability (confidence: low-medium): the list of commands that supersede a pending retry is a hand-maintained string allowlist, so any new style command (or a project/layer-edit command not listed, e.g. a field rename or layer.definitionQuery change) silently leaves a stale error and picker on screen. Also, app.run only calls this once frame_ctx is set, so commands run before the first logic() skip it. Consider deriving the set from a layer./style. prefix, or clearing on any successful command that changes the session's undo depth.

I've posted two inline comments and am now writing the final review summary.

Code review

I found no crash or correctness bugs in the PR. It makes layer.symbology pick a field that suits the target renderer. When a switch fails, the pane keeps the current renderer and offers a field picker. I read the whole diff and the changed code, and I did not build or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None found. The numeric filter in the field-selection closure is correct. The engine test confirms a failed switch leaves the renderer unchanged and adds no undo step. I did not check the pane's retry and cleanup logic against the app's real command flow.

Quality

  • Unique Values default is now the first field of any type (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:2611). A dataset whose first column is an ID or name will produce one class per feature. Confidence: medium.
  • The list of commands that clear a pending retry is a hand-kept allowlist (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:3322). A style or layer-edit command missing from it leaves a stale error and picker on screen, for example a definition-query change. app.run also skips the cleanup until frame_ctx is set on the first logic() call. Confidence: low to medium.
  • The pane shows engine error strings as-is, untranslated. This is consistent with the rest of the repo, so it is only a minor note.

Security

  • Nothing found. The PR adds no file or network input, and it uses no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe outside tests.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. The pane clones the layer each frame, as it already did, and the new per-frame work is a single temp-data lookup.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic! outside tests. The engine and UI regression tests cover the new behaviour.
  • New UI literals use tl!.
  • frame_ctx is no longer limited to native builds, so nothing here should break the wasm build.
  • The docs are updated.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear pending retries after direct Session style commands.

If the native relay or file bridge successfully changes the pending layer’s style, it runs against Session directly and bypasses this callback. follow_symbology checks layer identity, not style changes. The pane can therefore keep an obsolete error and offer a retry for a switch that the newer edit superseded. Track successful style changes on these direct command paths, or make pending-state cleanup detect the changed renderer.

Code review

I found no blocking issues in this PR. I read the diff and the surrounding context, but I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None found. The field(numeric_only) closure in layer.rs falls back correctly. A stale non-numeric field from the previous renderer is skipped for Graduated and Proportional. An explicit field parameter is still passed through and validated by the renderer constructors. The new engine test also checks that a failed switch adds no undo step and leaves the renderer unchanged.
  • Behaviour change (intended, documented): Unique Values with no field now picks the first field of any type. It used to pick the first numeric field. Existing scripts or agent calls that omit field may get a different default. Confidence: high that it is intended.

Security

  • None. All input is handled through get() and Result, with no unwrap or panic in non-test code.

Performance

  • Minor: pending_symbology compares the full Renderer (l.renderer == *pending.renderer) on every frame while the Symbology pane is open and a retry is pending. A layer with many unique classes makes this a deep comparison. The cost is small and only applies while a retry is pending. A cheap revision counter or a class count would avoid it if it ever shows up in profiles. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • The error text shown in the pane (pending.error) comes from the engine in English and is not passed through tl!/i18n. This is consistent with other engine errors, and AGENTS.md says command and data text isn't translated, so it is fine. A note would help if translated errors are wanted later. Confidence: low.
  • pending_symbology is called twice per frame, once in show() and once in symbology(). The second call is the one that actually renders. This is harmless, but the first call exists only for its stale-clearing side effect. Splitting it into a clearer drop_stale_pending would make that intent explicit. Confidence: low.
  • The pending state is keyed on project, map, layer and renderer, with tests for pane close, layer round trip, map round trip and external edits. That design is robust.

AGENTS.md

  • New UI strings use tl!.
  • No new dependencies, assets or unsafe.
  • Regression tests cover the new behaviour.
  • The docs in cartography.md are updated.
  • No violations found.
