Done in d2d0df1: the doc line is back on stroke_json, and DASH_PRESETS has only its own.

The MAX_DASHES guard uses the path's bounds span, which is only a lower bound on its length. A winding path with small bounds but a very long length can still be cut into far more than 100k dashes. The reverse also happens: a long line zoomed far in (mostly off-screen) has a huge span in pixels and silently turns solid, so the dashes vanish at high zoom. If tiny_skia::StrokeDash already limits the dash count, say so in a comment. Otherwise consider clipping the path to the viewport before dashing. (Confidence: medium-low.)
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Thanks, the first point is right. Fixed in e02f6f6: the limit now uses the path's length (path_length: lines exactly, a curve by its control polygon, which is never shorter). The bounds' span was only a lower bound. Test: a_winding_path_counts_its_length_against_the_dash_limit, a zigzag of 200,000 px inside a 10 px square. It's now drawn solid with a 1 px period and dashed with a 4 px one.
The second point is deliberate. tiny-skia dashes the whole path, including the part that's off screen, so the limit has to count all of it to bound the work. At the default 1 pt "Dashed" pattern (6 px a period), a line turns solid only once it's about 600,000 px long on screen, roughly 300 screen widths. Clipping the path to the view before dashing, with the dash phase carried through, would lift that. It's a bigger change, so I've left it for a follow-up and noted it in the doc comment on dash.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low valueDocument the empty pattern that
From<Vec<f32>>can return.
Dashsays it is "Built only through [Dash::new]" and that its steps "add up to more than nothing." TheFrom<Vec<f32>>impl does not follow that rule. WhenDash::newrejects the clamped steps, the impl returnsDash { steps: [0.0; MAX_DASH_STEPS], len: 0 }. That value has no steps, andperiod()returns0.0. A public caller ofDash::from(vec![])gets a zero period, which the type documentation says cannot occur. In this workspace, no consumer sees the empty value.
Dashdeserializes throughserde(from = "Vec<f32>").LineStroke::clampedremoves an empty pattern and makes the stroke solid.de_strokes,de_class_strokes,set_class_strokes, and the layer command all callclamped.Dash::newcallers use the checked constructor and never receive the sentinel. The fix is documentation. Either the
Dashcontract must allow the empty sentinel fromFrom, or the sentinel must not be public. Removing the impl would break the deserialization rule that a pattern without length is solid. A safe code change is not established, so this comment proposes only the documentation update.📝 Suggested documentation fix

Dashdeserializes throughVec<f32>(#[serde(from = "Vec<f32>")],crates/map/src/symbology.rs:174). Serde builds the full vector first.From<Vec<f32>>then keeps only the firstMAX_DASH_STEPSvalues. A crafted file can therefore force the full allocation. The bound limits the stored pattern, not the memory used to read it.The path is reachable today:
- Project load:
Project::from_jsonandProject::loadaccept text up toMAX_BYTES, which is 512 MB (crates/engine/src/project.rs:42,670-674,685-691).serde_json::from_str::<Project>then reads the file with no array-length check.- Layer load:
add_layer_fileaccepts files up to 512 MB (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:1887-1891).add_layer_textcallsserde_json::from_str::<rustgis_map::Layer>(1897).- The
dashfield has nodeserialize_withattribute (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:253-254).A file of about 512 MB can hold roughly 250 million short dash entries. The
Vec<f32>alone can reach about 1 GiB, and vector growth adds a transient copy. Opening such a file can exhaust memory on a small machine. The fix limits memory, not parse time. Parsing remains linear in file size.Fix: implement
DeserializeforDashwith a visitor. The visitor should read at mostMAX_DASH_STEPSvalues and discard the rest withserde::de::IgnoredAny. Keep the existing clamping inFrom. The stored result stays the same.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

stacked_linepasses the path fromring_path(..., false)tostacked_path. For a line that extends past the clip box,clip_linestarts the drawn polyline at the clip entry point.dash()then uses a zero phase offset. The dash pattern therefore anchors to that entry point, not to the line's true start. The entry point moves along the geometry as the view pans, so dashes can slide relative to the line. The effect applies only to dashed strokes whose start lies outside the clip box. The guard in
RenderCtx::dashestimates dash count from the bounding box, not from the path length.span = (b.width() + b.height()) * 2.0is compared withMAX_DASHES. A line that winds inside a small box has a much longer path thanspan. Such a line passes the guard and can produce far more dashes thanMAX_DASHES(100,000).For example, a 10 × 10 px box holds a line of about 100,000 reversals that are 1 px long. Its length is about 100,000 px. With a 1 px dash period, that is about 100,000 dashes. The guard sees

crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4098-4099
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low valueStroke dash presets on widths below 1 pt do not follow the documented width scaling.
The Dash presets multiply each length by
w.max(1.0), so a stroke narrower than 1 pt gets the 1 pt scale. For a 0.5 pt stroke, Dotted stores[1.0, 2.0]points instead of the width-relative[0.5, 1.0]. The stored lengths are twice the width-relative values. The user guide says the presets are "sized to the stroke's width," and the floor is not documented. Either document the 1 pt floor, or change the scaling so it still gives a valid pattern at very small widths.Do not remove the floor alone. At a width of 0, the scaled pattern is all zeros.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nit (confidence: medium): when the typed pattern is invalid (4 x, more than 8 steps, a step over 500, 0 0), parse_dash returns None and the draft is silently dropped on focus loss. The box then snaps back to the old pattern with no message. Consider a red outline or a hover note while the draft doesn't parse. Also, the preview treats a period under 1 px as solid using k-scaled steps, while the renderer uses ppp-scaled steps, so the two can disagree for fine patterns.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Both done in 0c8a3e6. Text that doesn't parse as a pattern now gets a red outline while it's typed, since it won't be kept when the box loses focus; the hover text already gives the format. The preview now draws solid by the map's rule: the pattern's own period times the screen's pixels per point, under 1 px. It no longer uses the preview's fitted scale.

Minor (confidence ~50%): text that doesn't parse (e.g. 4 x, a step above 500, more than 8 steps, or all zeros) is dropped silently on focus loss. The box reverts to the old pattern with no hint about why. Consider showing an error colour or hover while the draft is invalid, since the rules are stricter than the tooltip says (max 8 steps, each ≤ 500).
Also, dash_text rounds to 2 decimals. A stored pattern such as 0.004 shows as 0, and re-committing the shown text would change it. This is unlikely to matter in practice.

Focusing and leaving the box without typing can still change the stroke. dash_text rounds each step to 2 decimals, but this compares the re-parsed text with the exact st.dash. Take a preset scaled by a width like 1.333, which gives 5.332. The box shows 5.33, and on blur parse_dash returns 5.33, which differs from 5.332. The pattern is overwritten and an undo entry is added. The command path has the same effect for any non-round value.
Only apply the draft when the user edited it. For example, track r.changed() with a flag in the temp data, or only run this block when draft_for(...) was Some. Confidence: medium.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 278b240. The box sets a pattern only when its text was typed (a draft for this stroke exists, or it changed this frame), so focusing and leaving it never touches the stroke or adds an undo entry. It also shows the lengths as kept now, so 5.332 stays 5.332. Test: the_dash_box_sets_only_a_typed_pattern.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nit (low confidence): the type doc says a Dash is "built only through Dash::new, so its steps are always in range and add up to more than nothing". This fallback builds an empty Dash (len: 0), which breaks that invariant. It is only safe because LineStroke::clamped() filters empty dashes, and Dash::period() is 0 for such a value. Anything that deserializes a Dash and skips clamped() would see an empty pattern. Two ways to tighten this: make the deserialize path produce Option<Dash> through a deserialize_with function, or state the empty case in the doc.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 31f5427. A project's pattern is now read by a field deserializer (de_dash): steps are brought into range, and one left without length reads as None, solid. The empty Dash is gone, so a Dash is only ever built through Dash::new, as its doc says, and LineStroke::clamped() no longer has to filter it. The hostile-pattern test also reads a LineStroke on its own now, without clamped().
Also in this push: rebased onto main for the egui 0.37 bump (#781). The dash box's id comes from Ui::scope_id (3b2101f), which fixes the clippy and wasm32 failures.

A stacked line stroke can be dashed (`LineStroke::dash`): lengths in points, dash and gap in turn, as SVG's stroke-dasharray (an odd list is repeated). Kept in a project as that list; a crafted project's steps are clamped to 0..500 points, cut to 8, and a pattern without length is a solid line. - render: stroked with tiny-skia's dash, in pixels; drawn solid when a round of the pattern is under a pixel, or would cut a path into more than 100,000 dashes. - engine: `"dash": [points, ...] | null` on each stroke of `layer.lineStrokes`, refused when out of range. - ui: a Dash row on each stroke (typed, such as `4 2`, or picked: dashed, dotted, dash-dot, long dash, sized to the stroke's width), and the stroke preview draws the dashes. - docs: cartography.md › Line strokes.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Low confidence: contours drops any piece finish() rejects (a lone move-to), but stacked_path zips its output with starts.of(drawn), which matched the move-to count. If a piece is dropped, or offset_path removes or splits a piece, the pieces and starts silently shift by one and later pieces get the wrong dash phase. contours could return (Option<Path>, …) or keep indices so the starts stay aligned. Alternatively, assert contours.len() == at.len() before zipping and fall back to the solid or unphased path when they differ. The change is cosmetic (dash phase only), so it isn't blocking.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 508d45b, the second way you suggest: stacked_path uses the starts only when contours(drawn) gives exactly as many pieces as there are starts. Otherwise it strokes the path as one, unphased, as it does for a line that wasn't cut. In practice the counts match: of() counts the drawn path's move-tos, and every piece of a finished tiny-skia path is a path of its own again, even a lone move-to and close. But a mismatch now can't shift the later pieces' dashes.

Two small concerns here (confidence: medium-low):
startsholds distances along the unshifted line, butdrawncan be the offset path. An offset curve's length differs from the centre line's (inner/outer side of bends), so a cut line's dash phase drifts slightly for offset strokes. It's cosmetic, but the doc says dashes keep "where they'd be uncut".- When the contour count doesn't match (
c.len() != at.len()), the code silently falls back to one dash phase of 0 for the whole path. That means a clipped line's dashes jump at each cut. A test for an offset or multi-part dashed line would pin down which behaviour is intended.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Thanks. Taking them in turn:
-
Right: the starts are distances along the line itself, so an offset stroke on a line that bends before the cut gets a start that is off by how much longer or shorter the shifted line is up to there. That is a fraction of the offset per bend, and only on lines cut at the clip box, so I left it. Measuring it exactly would mean offsetting the whole uncut line for each offset stroke, just to measure up to each cut, which is the work the clipping exists to avoid. On a straight line the shifted line is as long as the line, and e469e6c pins that down:
a_line_cut_at_the_clip_box_keeps_its_dashes_where_they_werenow also draws a stroke offset 3 pt and checks its dashes against the same offset line drawn uncut. With no starts, 15 pixels of the row differ, so the test does catch a lost phase. -
The fallback is deliberate. It is what every dashed line did before 55f46b6, and with today's paths it is reached only when
offset_pathleaves a run with no length (all its points the same), which leaves nothing to draw there anyway. Using wrong starts would be worse than restarting the pattern.

Summary
A stacked line stroke can be dashed:
