Problem

Load All Features (Layer::load_all) on a layer whose web source is still opening in the background fails with "the layer's source isn't open". This happens with a freshly opened project, or a layer added by its address, before the first view has finished opening it.

load_all copies the source and calls open(). For a source by its web address that's already opening, open_remote shares the pending slot and returns Ok(()) while the result hasn't landed, so read_all finds no handle.

The engine test flatgeobuf_and_geoparquet_by_address_are_read_in_place hits this race at its "Load All Features before the layer has drawn" step. It fails in a full cargo test -p rustgis-engine --lib run whenever the background open is slower than the call. I saw it fail repeatedly on #765's branch, and once on #763's under load, while passing on its own.

Fix

After open(), load_all calls wait_open(30 s), as exports already do. On the desktop read_all downloads the file synchronously anyway, so nothing new blocks. On wasm wait_open is a no-op.

Test

load_all_features_waits_for_a_source_still_opening reopens a saved project against a server that holds its answers (serve_gated) and calls load_all while the source is still opening. The server is released 300 ms later. The test fails without the fix and passes with it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Loading all features now waits for a source that is still opening in the background, helping ensure the complete dataset is available before loading finishes.
    • If the source does not open within 30 seconds, loading reports an error instead of proceeding prematurely.
    • Existing feature limits and error behavior remain unchanged.

Walkthrough

Layer::load_all now waits up to 30 seconds for a source that remains unopened after open(). A regression test verifies that loading a gated streamed source completes with all 100 features.

wait_open sleeps the calling thread for up to 30 s. load_all is reached from tools and from Load All Features. If either runs on the UI thread, a slow or hung server freezes the app for the whole timeout, with no progress shown. Please confirm the callers. If any is on the UI thread, consider a shorter bound, or turning the "still opening" case into a "try again once it has opened" message.

On timeout, the code falls through to read_all. That returns the old "the layer's source isn't open" error, which hides the real cause (the source is slow). A specific message after the wait would be clearer. Confidence: medium.

The new test relies on a 300 ms sleep to release the gate. It should be stable, since the wait is 30 s, but it is timing-dependent.

Callers: layer.loadAll, the export commands and the tools (gp). Each already reads the whole source synchronously on the thread that runs the command, network reads included, so waiting for the open is part of that same read. The wait is bounded, and the export path (sync_source with block) already waits up to 60 s the same way. On the web build wait_open does not block.

The message is fixed in 53cb50d. If the source still has not opened after the wait, the error is the source's own error, or "the layer's source is still opening: try again once it has opened", instead of "isn't open".

The test no longer relies on a timed release. It checks that the load is still waiting before it opens the gate.

Code review

I posted one inline comment. I found no outright bugs. The change is small and does what it says: Layer::load_all now waits (up to 30 s) for a web source that is still opening, instead of failing with "the layer's source isn't open".

I checked the following:

  • How the wait works: wait_open only waits when opening is set. The cloned source shares the opening slot with the original, so a result that lands in the background is picked up by the clone (open_remote). The wasm build skips the wait, which fits the "never break wasm" rule.
  • Panics: the new code adds no unwrap, expect or panics outside tests.
  • Dependencies: the PR adds none.

Bugs

  • None found.

Quality / Performance

  • crates/map/src/lib.rs:397 (medium confidence): wait_open blocks the calling thread for up to 30 s. If load_all runs on the UI thread, a slow server will freeze the app for that long. Please confirm the callers.
  • Same line (medium confidence): if the wait times out, the code falls through to read_all and reports "source isn't open". That message hides the real cause, which is a slow source. A specific timeout message would be clearer.
  • crates/engine/src/tests.rs (low confidence): the new test releases the server gate after a fixed 300 ms sleep. Because the wait is 30 s, this should be stable, but it depends on timing.

Security

  • None found.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations seen. The change adds a regression-style test and touches no UI strings.
  • I did not run cargo xtask ci. I only read the diff and the surrounding source.

Code review

I found no blocking problems in this small, focused fix: 2 files, a 10-line change in Layer::load_all plus a regression test. I reviewed it by reading the diff and crates/map/src/source.rs (open_remote, wait_open, is_open, is_pending, read_all). I did not build or run anything, so the new test's behaviour is unconfirmed.

Bugs

  • None found. open() returns Ok(()) while the shared opening slot is still empty. wait_open then polls open() until the handle lands, an error is recorded, or the timeout passes. The new is_open() check turns the remaining cases into a clear error. A failed open surfaces copy.error, otherwise a "still opening" message. (High confidence.)
  • On wasm, wait_open does nothing, so a still-pending source now returns the "still opening: try again" message instead of the old "source isn't open". This is an improvement. (High confidence.)

Performance

  • wait_open can block the calling thread for up to 30 s. If the UI thread runs load_all through the command path, the UI freezes while a slow server is opening. The PR notes that desktop read_all already downloads synchronously, so this is no new class of blocking. It is still worth confirming that a command running on the UI thread is acceptable here. (Low confidence, informational.)

Quality

  • crates/engine/src/tests.rs: the test uses a fixed 300 ms sleep to assert the load is still waiting. It also asserts !load.is_finished() after that sleep. That is only a short window, but it could flake on a very slow CI machine if the open were to finish, or fail, for another reason. The failure message calls load.join() only when the assertion fails. That is correct but easy to misread. Joining there blocks until the 30 s timeout if the thread really is stuck. (Low confidence, nit.)
  • The test uses unwrap() and expect-style calls, which is fine under #[cfg(test)].

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic! in the non-test change, and web_time is already used inside wait_open. The new error string is a command-side message, not interface text, so tl! does not apply.
  • A regression test is included, as the "every crash fix gets a regression test" rule asks.
  • No new dependencies, assets or wasm-breaking APIs. std::time::Duration is only a type and is fine on wasm.
