feat(symbology): geometric interval and standard deviation classes - #805
Two more classification methods for graduated colours and classified rasters, from the roadmap's open styling item:
Geometric Interval: class widths that grow by one ratio, for values piled up at the low end (population, areas, counts). For positive values each bound is the one before times (max / min)^(1/k); values from zero or below are shifted so the minimum sits at a hundredth of the range, so the widths still grow by one ratio.
Standard Deviation: classes one population standard deviation wide about the mean. An even class count puts a bound on the mean, an odd one centres a class on it. Bounds past the data are dropped, so no class is empty and the count can come out lower than asked.
Both go through class_breaks, so layer.symbology ("method": "geometricInterval" / "standardDeviation", also "geometric" / "stddev"), raster classify and the Symbology pane's method list (it loops ClassMethod::ALL) get them. The command's parameter text, the cartography guide, the thematic-map skill and the Python docstring list them; the roadmap keeps manual breaks open.
The new variants are added at the end of ClassMethod, so existing projects read as before.
Testing
three new tests in symbology.rs: geometric bounds for positive data and for data from below zero, standard deviation bounds for even and odd counts and with bounds past the data, every method read back from its name and label
cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test --workspace (1923 passed), cargo xtask layers. My clippy (1.95) also flags three lints already on main (data/src/raster/mod.rs:403, ui-egui/src/opendataui.rs:630, apps/rustgis/examples/navigate_bench.rs:81), so I ran it with those allowed
ui_shot: Countries by pop_est with each new method in the Symbology pane; Standard Deviation on this skewed field gives 3 classes for 5 asked, as described above (screenshots below)

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Graduated-colour maps now support geometric interval and standard deviation classification. Geometric interval creates class widths that grow by a consistent ratio and adjusts when values include zero or negatives. Standard deviation groups values into intervals around the mean, omitting empty classes.
Documentation
Updated the cartography guide and styling references to describe the new classification methods. The roadmap now lists them among completed graduated-colour options and lists manual breaks alone under styling quick wins.

Walkthrough
The change adds geometric interval and standard deviation as graduated-colour classification methods. It adds class-break calculations and name aliases, tests the methods, and updates parameter descriptions, guidance, user documentation, and roadmap entries.

Summary
Method definitions and class breaks crates/map/src/symbology.rs
ClassMethod includes geometric interval and standard deviation, with name aliases. class_breaks calculates geometric bounds and population-standard-deviation bounds. Bound deduplication now removes only exactly equal values. Tests cover bounds, numeric edge cases, labels, parsing, and method listing.
Method guidance and documentation apps/rustgis-python/python/rustgis/__init__.py, crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/assistant/skills/thematic-map/SKILL.md, docs/user-guide/cartography.md, ROADMAP.md
Parameter descriptions and thematic-map guidance list both methods. The user guide describes their classification rules. The roadmap updates its styling and completed-cartography entries.
opengeos/RustGIS#747: It edits the roadmap entries for the same classification methods.

I read the full diff and checked class_breaks in crates/map/src/symbology.rs against the code around it. Nothing blocks merging. I did not build the code or run the tests.
Bugs
None found. The early return for hi <= lo guarantees s = max(|lo|, |hi|) > 0, so the standard-deviation scaling cannot divide by zero. Non-finite input only produces bounds that the v > lo && v < hi filter drops, so the result falls back to [hi]. There are no panics, indexing, or unwraps, so the "Never crash" rule holds. (confidence: medium-high)
Quality
Geometric interval for lo <= 0 is a custom convention (symbology.rs, lines 1002–1020). It treats the minimum as sitting at 1% of the range, which gives a fixed 101^(1/k) ratio. That differs from QGIS and ArcGIS, which handle non-positive data differently. The code comment explains it, but docs/user-guide/cartography.md should say so too, so users aren't surprised. (confidence: medium)
Standard-deviation classes can be fewer than requested (symbology.rs, lines 1022–1041). Bounds that would give an empty class are dropped, which suits the tests. The UI's class-count control may still suggest k classes, and the docs don't mention this. (confidence: low-medium)
Overlong doc line (docs/user-guide/cartography.md, around line 236). The edit leaves "If no field is chosen…" on the same long line as the new text. Re-wrapping would be tidier. (confidence: high, nit)
Test name (symbology.rs): every_method_is_listed_named_and_read_back builds the camel-case name from the Debug output. That is clever but brittle if a variant is renamed. (nit)
Performance
The standard-deviation branch does a partition_point for each bound, which is O(k log n) on top of two O(n) passes. That is fine.
Security
None. The change is pure numeric code with no new I/O.
AGENTS.md
The new ClassMethod::label strings are English literals. The UI presumably translates them where they are displayed; I didn't confirm this. The guidelines say missing catalog entries are acceptable.
The roadmap, Python docstring, assistant skill, command params string and user guide are all updated consistently. This is good practice for "everything is a command".
The new tests cover overflow near the float limits, in line with the hostile-input rule.
