Summary

Manual breaks for graduated colours, the last part of the roadmap's open styling item (after #805).

  • ClassMethod::Manual, added at the end of the enum, so existing projects read as before.
  • layer.symbology takes "breaks": [numbers], the classes' upper bounds as typed: sorted, once each, and closed by the field's largest value so every feature has a class; up to 12 classes. "breaks" alone means manual; "method": "manual" with no bounds keeps the layer's current ones on the same field, so switching to it changes nothing. Bad input (not numbers, none, more than 12 classes) is refused and the layer keeps its style.
  • Renderer::graduated_manual builds it; graduated and it share one constructor.
  • The Symbology pane: with Manual chosen, each class's upper bound is a number to edit or take out, and Split the widest class adds one. A bound being dragged or typed is applied once, when the drag stops or the field is left, so a drag is one undo step.
  • raster.symbology refuses manual: a raster's classes are worked out, and its pane doesn't list it.
  • Docs: the cartography guide, the command's parameters, the thematic-map skill, the Python docstring; the roadmap moves manual breaks to Done.

Testing

  • manual_breaks_are_the_ones_given (engine): bounds as typed and closed by the maximum, sorted and deduplicated, breaks alone, manual keeping the current bounds, bad input refused; the raster test checks manual is refused
  • cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings (with the three lints my clippy 1.95 flags on main allowed, as in feat(symbology): geometric interval and standard deviation classes #805), cargo xtask layers
  • cargo test --workspace: 1955 passed. Two failed here: plugin_tools_run_off_the_session passes when run alone, and a_curved_labels_halos_go_under_all_its_letters (render, from feat(labels): label lines along them, straight or curved, and italic labels #802) draws no letters on this Windows laptop, likely a font it doesn't find; this pull request doesn't touch the render crate
  • ui_shot: Countries by pop_est with bounds 10M and 100M (the maximum closes a third class), then Split the widest class (screenshots below)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Graduated Colors now supports manual class breaks. Enter upper bounds directly, edit or remove breaks, and add classes by splitting the widest class. The final class extends to the largest value in the selected field.
    • When manual breaks are supplied without a classification method, they are used automatically. If manual mode is selected without new breaks, existing bounds are retained when applicable.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the cartography guide with instructions for using manual classification.
  • Behavior Changes
    • Raster symbology does not support manual classification; raster classes are calculated automatically.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds Manual classification for graduated symbology. The layer command accepts explicit class bounds, and the UI supports editing them. Raster symbology rejects Manual classification.

Changes: Manual Graduated Color Breaks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Manual class method and renderer
crates/map/src/symbology.rs
ClassMethod adds Manual. Renderer::graduated_manual filters, sorts, and deduplicates supplied bounds, adds the selected data maximum when needed, and rejects more than 12 resulting classes.
Command parsing and validation
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/raster.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, apps/rustgis-python/python/rustgis/__init__.py
The layer command accepts manual bounds and reuses matching current bounds when no new bounds are supplied. Raster symbology rejects Manual. Tests cover manual bounds and invalid inputs; the Python documentation describes the option.
UI editing and supporting documentation
crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md, crates/assistant/skills/thematic-map/SKILL.md, ROADMAP.md
The UI supports editing and removing bounds, and adding a class by splitting the widest class. The documentation and roadmap describe Manual classification.

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 739: The roadmap update marks manual breaks as completed but does not implement the issue’s broader roadmap proposal.
  • Issue 651: The UI applies manual class-bound edits when dragging stops or focus leaves the field, but the change does not modify label controls.
  • Issue 748: The tests cover the new manual graduated-color workflow, which falls within the issue’s scope of testing symbology workflows.

Code review

This PR adds one engine test, manual_breaks_are_the_ones_given, and none of the code it tests. I read the diff and grepped the repository. I did not build or run anything.

Bugs

  • The test can't compile because the feature is missing (high confidence).
    • ClassMethod::Manual doesn't exist in crates/map/src.
    • Nothing in crates/engine/src handles a "breaks" parameter on layer.symbology.
    • The Renderer::Graduated { breaks, method, .. } pattern assumes a method field I didn't verify.
    • The PR description says the rest follows in this PR, so this looks like work in progress. Until the implementation lands, the engine test target fails and cargo xtask ci is red. It shouldn't merge as it is. I left an inline comment on the test.

Security

  • Nothing to raise. The PR touches only test code.

Performance

  • Nothing to raise.

Quality

  • The test checks a lot of behaviour (low confidence). It covers sorting, de-duplication, closing the last class with the field maximum, "breaks alone means manual", keeping the current bounds, and the 12-class cap with its error cases. That is good coverage. Splitting it into a few focused tests would make failures easier to read, but that is optional.
  • Test-only unwrap() and panic! are fine (informational). AGENTS.md allows them in test code.
  • The hostile-parameter test needs a check later (informational). hostile_params_never_panic already runs junk parameters through every command. Once the implementation lands, confirm it still passes with the new breaks parameter (e.g. NaN, infinities, huge arrays).

AGENTS.md

  • The planned Symbology pane work will need tl! for new labels.
  • docs/user-guide and ROADMAP.md (the "manual breaks" item) should be updated when the feature lands.
  • Adding Manual at the end of the enum, so old projects still read as before, matches the layering and compatibility rules.

Code review

The change is clean overall. The new code has no unwrap or panic outside tests, and bad breaks input returns an error without touching the layer's style. It also adds a regression test, a docs update and the command parameter docs. I read the diff only and did not build or run anything, so the tests are unverified.

Bugs

  • Manual on rasters (low–medium confidence): raster.symbology accepts "method":"manual" through ClassMethod::from_name. class_breaks then silently falls back to equal intervals, so the raster is labelled Manual but has no typed bounds. The raster UI hides Manual, but the command doesn't. Reject it in the raster command.
  • Closing class can't be removed (medium): The command appends the field's maximum as the last bound. The × button on that class does nothing visible, because the bound is re-added on the next command.

Performance

  • Command on every drag frame (medium): manual_breaks runs layer.symbology whenever a DragValue reports changed(), which is every frame of a drag. Each run rebuilds the renderer over all rows and may add an undo entry per frame. Apply on drag_stopped() or lost_focus() instead.
  • Rows reorder mid-drag (medium): The command sorts and dedups the bounds. Dragging one bound past its neighbour therefore reorders the rows while the user is still dragging.

Quality

  • Placement (nit): manual_breaks is placed after mod tests at the end of panes.rs. Move it above the test module.
  • Untranslated label (nit): The "×" label isn't wrapped in tl!. It is a symbol, so this is fine if left as is.

Security

Nothing found. breaks is validated as numbers, non-finite values are filtered, and the class count is capped at 12.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic! in non-test code, and the layering is respected.
  • Interface strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • A regression test covers the new command path. I did not see a case for breaks with an unrelated method, or for hostile_params_never_panic with junk breaks. That test iterates every command, so it probably covers this already.

Code review

The change is clean and consistent with the repo guidelines. I found two small issues and no blocking ones. I read the diff and checked other uses of ClassMethod. I did not build the project or run any tests.

Bugs

  • Silent failure in the Manual UI (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, manual_breaks). The result of app.run("layer.symbology", …) is discarded. If a user lowers the last bound while 12 classes exist, the backend appends the field's maximum, which makes 13 classes, and returns an error. The pane then snaps back with no message. Confidence: medium.
  • breaks ignored with a non-manual method (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs). {"method":"quantile","breaks":[…]} silently drops breaks. Refuse the combination or let breaks win. Confidence: medium.
  • Row-indexed held values. The held-value ids in manual_breaks are keyed by row index. They are cleared on drag stop or focus loss, so the risk is low. Confidence: low.

Security

  • Nothing found. breaks is validated for type, finiteness and count (at most 12), and non-numeric input returns an error rather than panicking.

Performance

  • Nothing found.

Quality

  • graduated_manual and graduated share graduated_by, which avoids duplicated logic.
  • ClassMethod::Manual falls back to equal intervals in class_breaks, which is reasonable and commented.
  • The raster command rejects Manual, and the raster UI hides it.

AGENTS.md

  • The change adds no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code.
  • User-visible strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • Tests cover the new command, including bad input.
  • The docs and ROADMAP are updated.
  • Nothing in the change affects the wasm build or layering.

Code review

I posted one inline comment, on crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs. I only read the diff, and nothing was compiled or run.

Bugs

  • Medium-high: crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, the × button on the last class does nothing. graduated_manual closes the list with the field's maximum whenever the last bound is below it. Removing the last bound therefore re-adds the maximum and the class count stays the same.
  • Medium: at 12 classes, dragging the last bound below the maximum makes 13 classes. The command refuses this, and let _ = app.run(...) drops the error, so the edit snaps back with no message.
  • Low: "method": "manual" with no bounds on a different field, or on a layer that isn't graduated, falls back to equal intervals but stores Manual as the method. The pane then shows editable bounds that were worked out rather than typed. This looks intentional, but it is worth documenting.

Security

  • Nothing found. breaks is validated as a list of numbers, non-finite values are dropped, and the class count is capped at 12. I saw no unwrap, expect or indexing in the new non-test code.

Performance

  • Nothing found.

Quality

  • manual_breaks rebuilds Id::unique(("manual-break", field, i)) on each frame. Other call sites in crates/ui-egui use the same Id::unique(...) pattern, so this matches the surrounding code. I did not open its definition, so I could not check that the ids stay stable between frames. If they don't, the held-drag value would never be found and the "apply once" behaviour would break.
  • The new ribbon strings go through tl! and i18n::fmt, which follows the translation rules.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The new enum variant is appended at the end. The command is documented, with tests added for the engine and for rasters refusing manual. The docs, skill file, Python docstring and roadmap are updated.
  • cargo xtask ci was not run here. The PR description reports two failing tests in the workspace run, which it attributes to flaky or font-dependent tests outside this change.

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding code. I found nothing blocking, and no inline comments are warranted.

Bugs

  • Low confidence, minor: in crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs (symbology), the "breaks go with the manual method" error fires before the type is checked. {"type":"single","method":"quantile","breaks":[…]} is refused, although breaks would be ignored for that type anyway. This is harmless and arguably stricter than needed.
  • Low confidence, minor: Manual with no typed bounds and no kept bounds falls through to Renderer::graduated(..., Manual, ...). That gives equal-interval classes labelled "Manual", as the class_breaks comment says. The UI then shows editable bounds, so it works. The method label does not match how the bounds were produced, though.
  • Low confidence, UI: in manual_breaks, held drag values are keyed by (layer, field, index). If the user removes a bound or the layer changes mid-edit, a stale held value could be applied to a different row. Held values are cleared only when that row's edit finishes. This needs a very narrow interaction to trigger.

Security

  • None found. The breaks parameter is validated: non-numbers are refused, non-finite values are dropped, the count is capped at 12, and an empty list is an error. There are no unwrap/expect calls in the new non-test code.

Performance

  • None found. graduated_manual sorts a small vector, and the class values are sorted once, as before.

Quality

  • The refactor into graduated_by with a closure is clean, and the existing graduated path keeps its behaviour.
  • The raster classify path refuses Manual, and the raster UI filters it out. This is consistent.
  • The new tests cover typed bounds, sorting and dedup, "breaks alone means manual", keeping the current bounds, refusing a conflicting method, and bad input leaving the style unchanged.
  • I did not run the tests: I had no Bash tool.

AGENTS.md

  • The UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, as required. Catalog entries are not needed.
  • The docs, Python docstring, assistant skill, command params text and ROADMAP are all updated.
  • I saw no panics and no unsafe.
  • Layering is respected: the egui code stays in ui-egui.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize the final manual bound to the field maximum.

When breaks ends above the field maximum, graduated_manual stores that value unchanged. Both layer.symbology and the manual-break UI call this constructor. The renderer then uses the value for class assignment and legend labels, so a field with maximum 10 and breaks [5, 20] produces a legend range ending at 20 instead of 10.
