Main CI fails on macOS and Windows since #802: a_curved_labels_halos_go_under_all_its_letters reports "the letters are drawn: 0". At 12 px the thin l of Segoe UI / SF never gets darker than the test's threshold (reproduced locally with Open Sans Light: darkest pixel 77, threshold 40).

The test now draws the letters at 30 px, so every font's strokes have solid middles, and places them 2 px apart so the regression it guards (each letter's halo drawn right before it, covering the previous letter) is still caught. Verified locally with Open Sans Light, Liberation Sans, the built-in Ubuntu Light and Inter: the test passes on all four, and fails on all four with the halo/text loops swapped.

This PR's first macOS run also hit a timing race in chatgpt::native::tests::callback_reads_and_auth_requests_obey_cancel_and_deadline: the thread that sets the cancel flag after 30 ms could run after the 150 ms work had already finished, so cancellable returned Ok. The work now runs until the flag is set (at most 5 s), so the result no longer depends on scheduling.

Labelled ci:full to run on macOS and Windows.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded text-rendering coverage to check that halo effects do not lighten letters when glyphs are larger and more widely spaced.
    • Updated cancellation coverage to verify that cancellation is reported while simulated work is still running, with a timeout as a safeguard.

…in fonts

At 12 px, Segoe UI's and SF's thin 'l' never reaches the darkness the
test looks for, so it found no letter pixels on Windows and macOS.
At 30 px every font's strokes have solid middles; the letters sit
closer so a halo drawn per letter still covers its neighbour.

Walkthrough

Two tests change. The curved-label test uses larger, more widely spaced glyphs and checks rendered ink width. The cancellation test checks for cancellation while simulated work runs.

Changes: Curved-label halo regression test

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update curved-label halo test
crates/render/src/lib.rs
The test increases glyph size and spacing, enlarges the pixmap, and compares the ink width of one- and two-glyph renders. The existing halo pixel comparison remains.

Cancellation test

Layer / File(s) Summary
Check cancellation during simulated work
crates/assistant/src/chatgpt.rs
The test replaces a fixed 150 ms sleep with work that checks a cloned cancellation flag every 5 ms, stopping on cancellation or after five seconds.

Code review

I found nothing worth raising in this PR. It changes one test in crates/render/src/lib.rs and no non-test code.

What I checked

  • The change: the test a_curved_labels_halos_go_under_all_its_letters now draws its "ll" at 30 px instead of 12 px, in a 60×80 pixmap instead of 40×40. The letters are placed ±1.0 px from the label centre (2 px apart) instead of ±0.75 px (1.5 px apart). The anchor (30, 40) puts both letters well inside the larger canvas, with no clipping.
  • Thin fonts: at 30 px a thin glyph like Segoe UI or SF "l" should have a solid middle. That should get the darkest pixel under the red() < 40 threshold, which is the failure the PR describes on macOS and Windows. I couldn't run it here. The PR author says they verified it on four fonts.
  • Regression coverage: the halo assertion (b.red() < 80) and the letters > 5 guard are unchanged. The 2 px spacing is smaller than the glyph's stroke width plus the halo, so a halo drawn over the previous letter would still be caught. This matches the author's claim that the test fails on all four fonts when the halo/text loops are swapped.
  • AGENTS.md: there is no unwrap()/expect() in non-test code, no new dependencies, no assets and no interface text. The Pixmap::new(..).unwrap() is inside a test, which AGENTS.md allows.

Minor, not blocking (low confidence): the new comment says "Large enough that even a thin system font's strokes … have solid middles", but the test still relies on the < 40 threshold. A very light font could still fall short. That is theoretical, and I'd leave it.

The cancelling thread could run after the 150 ms work had finished on a
loaded macOS runner, so the request came back Ok. The work now runs
until the cancel is set (at most 5 s), however late that is.

Code review

This PR only changes tests, to fix two flaky ones. I found no bugs or security issues. Nothing was built or run: I read the diff and the surrounding test code.

Bugs

None found.

  • crates/assistant/src/chatgpt.rs: the work closure now polls the shared cancel flag, with a 5 s cap. It outlasts the 30 ms cancel however the scheduler orders the threads, so the cancelled assertion no longer depends on a 150 ms sleep winning the race. The lock is held only for the one-line read, so it can't deadlock with the setter. cancel.clone() fits the existing Arc<Mutex<bool>> usage. Confidence: high.
  • crates/render/src/lib.rs: the label is now size 30 on a 60×80 pixmap, at x=30, y=40, with glyph offsets of ±1.0. That is enough room for thin system-font strokes (Segoe UI, SF) to have solid middles, and the glyphs still fit on the canvas. The test's intent is unchanged. Confidence: medium. I couldn't run it against the platform fonts.

Security

None.

Performance

None. The polling loop sleeps 5 ms per iteration, and the 5 s cap only matters if cancellation never arrives.

Quality

  • Nit, low confidence: the ll halo test depends on system font metrics, so it could still be fragile on fonts with unusual stroke widths. A bundled test font would remove that dependency, but that is beyond this PR.

AGENTS.md

  • Test-only changes, so the no-unwrap rule for non-test code doesn't apply. The unwrap() calls are in #[cfg(test)] code.
  • No new dependencies, assets, UI strings or wasm impact.

Code review

I reviewed both changes, which are test-only: the crates/render halo test and the chatgpt.rs cancel-race test. I found nothing worth raising.

Bugs: none found

  • crates/assistant/src/chatgpt.rs: the work closure now polls the cancel flag, so it always outlasts the cancelling thread. The 5 s cap keeps a failure from hanging the test. The move closure needs 'static, which Arc::clone of cancel provides. The wait loop locks the mutex only briefly, so there is no deadlock with the canceller. Confidence is high.
  • crates/render/src/lib.rs: the 30 px glyphs, 2 px apart, give thin system fonts solid stroke middles. That removes the "letters drawn: 0" failure on macOS and Windows. The new inked(&plain) > inked(&one) assertion fails the test if a second letter isn't drawn at all, so the test can't pass without drawing both letters. The ink-width check is reasonable: two letters 2 px apart should be wider than one. Confidence is medium-high.

Security: none. The changes only touch tests.

Performance: none. The 5 ms poll and the larger 60×80 pixmap are negligible.

Quality: nit (low confidence)

  • The test relies on the 5 s cap to bound a failure. That is fine as written.
  • The long inked closure line is about 130 characters, under the repo's max_width = 140, so fmt should accept it.

AGENTS.md: no violations.

  • The test code uses unwrap, which is allowed in tests.
  • No dependencies, assets or UI strings changed.
  • The PR is labelled ci:full to exercise macOS and Windows, as the guidelines suggest.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Synchronize cancellation with callback entry.

cancellable checks the flag before it invokes the callback. The cancellation thread can set the flag during that check, so unwrap_err() can pass without executing the callback. This leaves cancellation during callback work untested.
