Builds on #876 (approved, not yet merged); this PR shows its commit too until it merges. The commit of its own is the last one, 833199a.

Before, a QGIS raster's colouring was noted as skipped, and style.importQgis refused raster layers. Now QGIS's raster renderers become RustGIS raster styles.

QGIS renderer RustGIS
Singleband grey Stretch from black to white (QGIS's grey covers the full range; RustGIS's Greys ramp stops short of both ends)
Singleband pseudocolour, interpolated Stretch along a ramp built from its colour map, with its colours and their transparency
Singleband pseudocolour, discrete Classify: a value takes the first class at or above it, as in QGIS; an open-ended last class (inf) is kept as the largest f32 so a project can hold it
Singleband pseudocolour, exact, and paletted Unique Values, at most 256 (more are noted)
Multiband colour RGB from QGIS's 1-based bands, with a stretch per band
Hillshade Shaded Relief (azimuth, altitude, z-factor); several light directions are noted
Contour, singleband colour data, others noted, as before

What else carries over:

  • The stretch: the contrast enhancement's bounds. When QGIS works them out from the canvas (CurrentCanvas/UpdatedCanvas), the stretch is RustGIS's min/max, percent clip or standard deviation stretch with dynamic range adjustment on.
  • Adjustments: brightness (QGIS's −255…255 scaled to −100…100), contrast and gamma, and bilinear resampling when QGIS smooths zoomed in.
  • The mask: values made fully transparent, values outside a clipping colour map or clipping enhancement, and single user no-data values hide as the raster's mask. Ranges and partial transparency are noted.
  • Noted: hue and saturation settings, an alpha band.
  • Applying styles:
    • A project's rasters take their colouring and blending.
    • style.importQgis now works on raster layers (need_layer instead of need_feature_layer).
    • A feature layer's style applied to a raster is noted.
    • A raster style that reads a band the raster doesn't have is noted, and the raster keeps its style.

Checked:

  • All 10 raster .qml files in a corpus of 149 QGIS files apply now, and none of the 149 crashes.
  • swisstopo's SMV25 project draws its rock, scree, glacier and relief rasters in QGIS's colours. Compared pixel by pixel with QGIS's own rendering, the share that differs went from 11.6% to 11.0% in a 4 m/px overview of Winterthur and from 7.3% to 7.2% in a 1 m/px view of the old town.

Tests: raster_renderers_read_as_rustgis_raster_styles (map) covers every renderer, the stretches, mask, adjustments and nonsense bands. a_qgis_raster_style_colours_a_raster (engine) applies a style to a raster and refuses one reading a missing band. The QGIS section of docs/user-guide/workspace.md lists the raster mapping.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • QGIS imports now support raster styles, including grayscale, pseudocolor, paletted, multiband RGB, and hillshade renderers.
    • Raster styling supports contrast adjustments, resampling, transparency, and clipping and no-data masks.
    • Compatible styles are applied to raster layers. Missing-band styles are reported and left unapplied when raster data is available; band checks are noted as unavailable while remote data loads.
    • QGIS style import is available for raster and feature layers.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the workspace guide with supported QGIS raster styling and import-note examples.

Code review

I read the diff and the new crates/map/src/qgis/raster.rs, and found nothing I'm confident is a bug. I did not run the code or the tests, so everything below comes from reading.

Bugs

  • None found with confidence. What I checked:
    • Style::apply now sets transparency, blend and scale limits before the raster branch.
    • raster_misfit guards the out-of-range band case.
    • Band, item and unique-value counts are all bounded (MAX_BAND, MAX_ITEMS, MAX_UNIQUE_VALUES).
    • There is no unwrap, indexing or panic in the new code, as AGENTS.md requires.

Quality

  • Low confidence, noise: labels.rs now reports an "approximated" note for every layer whose label halo is on (labels.rs ~line 143). The note fires even when the halo looks close to RustGIS's own, so a typical project imports with a note per labelled layer. You could limit it to a halo that differs from RustGIS's default in colour or width.
  • Low confidence, duplicated check: import_style in cmd/qgis.rs computes raster_misfit itself. Style::apply computes it again to decide whether to apply the style. This is harmless, but a small helper would keep the two in step.
  • Low confidence, new note text: in import_style, a raster style with a feature renderer and no raster reports "a feature layer's symbols and labels". A raster style file that has only an unsupported renderer (raster == None because read() returned None and already noted it) gets no extra note, which looks right.

Security

  • No issues. XML is read with roxmltree, and the new loops (legend depth capped at 64, take(MAX_ITEMS), take(8)) bound hostile input.

Performance

  • No issues. The new walks are linear and bounded.

AGENTS.md

  • The never-crash rules look followed, and the PR adds regression tests for the annotation-layer note and for a raster style (a_qgis_raster_style_colours_a_raster). I could not see crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs, which grows by about 18 KB. I assume the parsing cases are covered there.
  • The new notes are command output and not UI literals, so tl! is not needed.
  • The PR adds no assets or dependencies.

Low-confidence: r.data.as_ref()? makes the misfit check a silent pass when the raster's pixel data isn't loaded (for example a lazily or partly read GeoTIFF on the web). A style that reads a nonexistent band is then applied, and the renderer references a band that isn't there. If RasterLayer keeps a band count apart from data (metadata or a source header), use that. Otherwise this is acceptable, but a comment saying "not loaded: assume it fits" would help.

Leaving it. RasterLayer has no band count apart from data: data is None only while a remote read is in flight or when the source couldn't be read. In both cases there are no pixels to check against, and nothing is drawn. When the pixels do land, reload and poll_reload run RasterStyle::repair, which clamps every band the renderer names to the file's last band (crates/map/src/raster.rs:167 and :186). So a style naming a band that isn't there never draws from a missing band and can't panic. It just isn't noted at import, since the band count isn't known yet.

Follow-up: CodeRabbit raised the same case, and 090813b now notes it at style import (applied, bands not yet checked) instead of passing silently. The band count still isn't known before the pixels land, so the style is still applied, and repair clamps the bands.

Code review

I read the engine changes, qgis/mod.rs, qgis/labels.rs and the new qgis/raster.rs in full. I did not read the diff past line 600, so symbol.rs, renderer.rs, qgis/tests.rs and the docs were not reviewed. I did not build the code or run any tests.

Bugs

  • Low confidence: Style::raster_misfit (crates/map/src/qgis/mod.rs:164) passes silently when the raster's pixel data isn't loaded (r.data.as_ref()?). A style that reads a nonexistent band is then applied. I left an inline comment.

Security

  • Nothing found. The new XML parsing is bounded: MAX_BAND, MAX_ITEMS, take(8) on style names, and a depth cap in legend_layers. Non-finite numbers are filtered out, and there is no indexing or unwrap.

Performance

  • Nothing found.

Quality

  • Low confidence: labels.rs now adds a note for every layer with bufferDraw=1. Halos are common, so this will make import reports noisy.
  • Low confidence: import_style and add_layer in crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs repeat the same misfit check. A small shared helper would keep the two paths from drifting apart.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in the new non-test code.
  • New tests cover the raster style, a misfit style, the annotation layer note and the raster-style-on-a-feature-layer note.
  • No UI text was added, so tl! is not needed.
  • I did not check the cargo xtask ci gates or whether the docs need an ATTRIBUTION.md row.

Inconsistent with import_style: here, when the raster colouring doesn't fit, layer.style.apply(l) still applies opacity, blend and scale range (only the raster style is skipped), whereas import_style leaves the raster entirely as it was ("its opacity and scale range too"). The note says only the colouring is dropped, so for a project import this is accurate, but the two paths behave differently for the same style. Also, in the project import path, a raster whose data is still loading (data == None) gets no "unchecked" note, unlike import_style. Confidence: medium-low (consistency/UX, not a crash).

Leaving this on purpose. The two paths do different things. A project import adds the layer from the project, so opacity, blending and scale range are that layer's own settings and come in whatever happens to its colouring. Only the colouring is noted as skipped. style.importQgis restyles a layer that already looks the way the user set it, and a style that doesn't fit leaves it as it was, as the docs say. As for the loading case in project import: a project's rasters are added from their paths there, and a remote one that is still loading is clamped by repair when it lands. Noting every remote raster of a project as "unchecked" would add a note per layer for what is normally fine.

This note fires for every layer with a text buffer, even the common default (1 mm white halo) that RustGIS draws nearly identically, so it will add noise to most imports of labelled layers. Consider noting only when the buffer's size or colour differs from QGIS defaults. Confidence: low-medium.

Same as on #876 (already merged with this note): RustGIS always draws its own halo, so a QGIS buffer's colour and size are always dropped, including for QGIS's default. Keeping the note.

Code review

I read the engine changes, the new raster.rs and most of mod.rs and labels.rs. I did not read the rest of the diff (symbol.rs, renderer.rs, qgis/tests.rs, docs). I did not build the code or run the tests. The PR adds import of QGIS raster styles, more notes on what an import leaves out, and support for older QGIS project formats. I found no crash or security problems.

Bugs

  • None found. The parsing is bounded (MAX_BAND, MAX_ITEMS, depth limits), uses .get()-style access and has no unwrap. Confidence: medium, since I did not run it.

Security

  • None found. XML is parsed with roxmltree, and the code adds no file or network access.

Performance

  • None found.

Quality

  • Project import and style import handle a non-fitting raster style differently (crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:206). Project import still applies opacity, blend and scale range, and import_style leaves the raster untouched. Project import also gives no "unchecked" note when the raster's data hasn't loaded yet. Confidence: medium-low.
  • The label halo note fires for every buffered label (crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs:194). That includes QGIS's default halo, which RustGIS draws nearly the same, so it adds noise. Confidence: low-medium.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found in what I read: no unwrap, expect or panic!, and engine and map tests cover the new behaviour. The new note strings are plain literals, which fits how the QGIS importer already reports notes.

Report the omitted UserDefinedEnhancement.

A reachable single-band gray QGIS renderer passes its contrast enhancement to stretch_of. UserDefinedEnhancement makes bounds_of return None, so the parser stores Stretch::None. RustGIS then uses default normalization and ignores the QGIS user-defined contrast function. The imported raster can render with different colors without an approximation note.

Preserve QGIS no-data band scope.

no_data adds exact values from every noDataRange to one global RasterMask. RasterMask::hides has no source-band argument, so a value configured as no-data for one QGIS band can hide the same value in every RGB channel.

Store each value with its enclosing noDataList@bandNo, and pass the selected source-band index to band-aware mask checks. Keep existing global mask behavior for settings that are not band-scoped.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Report ignored labels on raster layers.

When a QGIS style contains <labeling> but no <renderer-v2>, style.labels is set while style.renderer remains None. The raster branch therefore emits no skipped note. Style::apply then returns after handling raster styling, so it ignores feature-layer labels. Users receive no notice that the imported labels were not carried over.

…styles apply to rasters

QGIS's raster renderers become RustGIS raster styles instead of a "raster colouring" note:

- singleband grey: a stretch from black to white;
- singleband pseudocolour: a stretch along its colour map (interpolated), Classify (discrete:
  a value takes the first class at or above it) or Unique Values (exact);
- paletted: Unique Values; multiband colour: RGB with a stretch per band;
- hillshade: Shaded Relief.

The contrast enhancement's bounds become the stretch (following the view when QGIS works them
out from the canvas), with brightness, contrast, gamma and bilinear resampling; values made
transparent, clipped by the colour map or set as no data hide as the raster's mask. Contours,
hue and saturation, partial transparency and alpha bands are noted.

A project's rasters take their colouring and blending, and style.importQgis now styles raster
layers too; a style reading a band the raster hasn't is noted and leaves it as it was.
…acity too; a raster style on a feature layer and an unreadable raster renderer are noted

Code review

I read the full diff and checked the helpers it calls (Stretch::custom, custom_bands, RasterRenderer::bands, MAX_UNIQUE_VALUES, RasterMask). I didn't build the code or run the tests. I found no bugs, security problems, or AGENTS.md violations that would block the merge, so I posted no inline comments. The points below are minor.

Bugs

  • Rotation reset on import (low confidence). Style::apply replaces the whole RasterStyle with st.clone() (crates/map/src/qgis/mod.rs). The importer sets rotation: 0.0, dra and the other fields itself, so any rotation or other setting the user made in RustGIS is lost. QGIS has no equivalent, so this may be acceptable. If it isn't, copy rotation across from the existing style.
  • Mask taken from the red band only (low confidence). In the multibandcolor branch, clip(enh[0], …) takes the clip range from the red band's enhancement alone. A single min/max mask is then applied across all bands. If the three bands have different clip ranges, pixels may be hidden or kept differently than in QGIS. Raising an approximated note when the three ranges differ would make this visible.
  • Discrete class semantics not checked here (low confidence). The DISCRETE branch relies on Classify with ClassMethod::Manual treating each break as an upper bound, with the last class open-ended. The unit test covers this, but I didn't check Classify's own semantics.

Security

  • None found. Parsing is bounded by MAX_ITEMS, MAX_BAND and MAX_UNIQUE_VALUES. Numbers are filtered for finiteness and clamped, and there is no unwrap or indexing in non-test code.

Performance

  • None found.

Quality

  • Duplicate misfit check. add_layer calls raster_misfit and then style.apply, which calls it again. This is harmless but redundant. import_style has the same pattern.
  • Repeated entry parsing. The paletted and pseudocolor entry parsing is nearly identical (value, colour, alpha). A shared helper would remove the duplication. This is a nit.
  • No inline style.apply behaviour for rasters in import_style messages. The notes say "only its opacity and scale range are taken", but apply also applies blend. The wording is slightly inaccurate (nit).

AGENTS.md

  • Never crash: compliant. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect or panic!. The panic! in tests.rs is test-only.
  • Wasm and layering: no new platform-specific dependencies.
  • Tests: both new tests exercise the nonsense-band and misfit paths. I couldn't see whether hostile_params_never_panic covers style.importQgis on rasters. Please confirm that.
  • Docs: docs/user-guide/workspace.md is updated.

Low confidence: values.retain(|v| v.0.is_finite()) runs before the as f32 narrowing. A finite f64 beyond f32::MAX (e.g. 1e300) becomes inf after the cast, so it is kept as an infinite unique value that no pixel can match. Clamp like the DISCRETE branch does, or filter after the cast:

Low confidence: only the red band's enhancement decides clipping (clip(enh[0], …)). The green and blue clip modes are ignored, and a single RasterMask min/max is applied to all three bands using the red bounds. If the bands have different bounds, the mask is only correct for red. Consider noting this as an approximation when the three bounds differ.

Code review

I read the diff and the new raster.rs carefully. I found nothing serious, and I did not build the code or run any tests. The PR reads QGIS raster renderers into RustGIS RasterStyles and applies them on project and style import. I found two minor issues and posted each as an inline comment.

Bugs

  • Unique-value cast (low confidence): in raster.rs unique(), finite values are filtered before the as f32 cast. A value like 1e300 becomes inf and is kept as an unmatchable entry. Filtering after the cast, or clamping, fixes it.
  • Multiband clipping (low confidence): in raster.rs for multibandcolor, only the red band's enhancement sets the clip mask. It is then applied to all three bands. Bands with different bounds or clip modes are silently approximated, with no note.

Security

  • Nothing found. XML parsing is bounded: MAX_ITEMS and MAX_BAND cap the items and band numbers read. Parsing uses get/Option rather than indexing and has no unwrap in non-test code.

Performance

  • Nothing found.

Quality

  • Behaviour is consistent: a style that reads a band the raster hasn't leaves the raster untouched, opacity included. This is tested, and the "unchecked while loading" path is noted in the report.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, panic or unsafe in non-test code, and the new tests cover the new paths.
  • Note texts go to the import report rather than the UI, so tl! doesn't apply.
  • I did not run cargo xtask ci, so fmt, clippy and layering are unchecked.

Assert the repaired renderer after reloading the raster.
