Fix zonal statistics validation and review feedback - #838
Addresses remaining review feedback from #718, now merged into main. This branch is rebased onto main and contains only the review-fix commit.
Share band validation between commands and the workflow, default empty input to band 1, and reject oversized indices before conversion.
Remove unused polygon transformation code and share ring projection while preserving strict polygon validation.
Surface partial clipping failures in command results and send the workflow's effective selection choice explicitly.
Show raster availability and polygon-selection feedback in the workflow.
Avoid direct indexing in field lookup and document exact-name precedence and ambiguous case-insensitive matches.
Strengthen integration tests for multi-band values, validation errors, and clipping warnings.
Simplify equivalent existing validation predicates required by current Clippy checks.
Testing
pre-commit run --all-files: passed after rebasing.
The review-fix patch is identical before and after rebasing, verified with git patch-id --stable.
Before rebasing: cargo xtask ci and cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passed; headless screenshots inspected in both themes with missing raster data and selected polygon features.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
Raster analysis now validates band inputs and rejects malformed or unprojectable polygon parts while retaining valid parts for zonal statistics and clipping. Commands report skipped features or parts. The analysis pane validates raster availability and bands, and tests and documentation cover these behaviors.

Summary
Band validation and polygon masking crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs
Band parsing uses shared numeric validation. Polygon projection rejects malformed rings and records failed part indices for masks and zonal statistics. The public transform_polygon helper was removed.
Zonal band parsing and partial results crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Zonal band parsing defaults null and empty strings to band 1, rejects invalid array inputs, and preserves input order when deduplicating. Zonal statistics report skipped parts while retaining results from valid parts. Tests cover multiple bands, invalid values, and partial projection failures.
Clipping failure messages and selection crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Clipping returns messages for failed features and polygon parts. The request sends the effective selected-only setting. Tests and documentation cover skipped items and output bounds based on valid polygons.
Analysis-pane band validation crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs
The pane displays selected-feature information and reports unavailable raster data or invalid bands. Calculation requires available raster data and valid bands; the smoke test checks that invalid input disables calculation.
Ambiguity details use optional field access. The guide describes case-insensitive matching, exact-name precedence, and rejection of ambiguous matches in five tools.
Issue 821 concerns polygon-to-grid rasterization. This pull request updates polygon masking for zonal statistics and clipping, but does not add the separate alignment and rasterization commands described in the issue.
Issue 748 requests analysis workflow testing. This pull request adds regression tests for zonal statistics, clipping, and projection failures.

Explanation
The title names the change: fixing zonal statistics validation and review feedback. The changeset covers band validation, polygon projection, and clipping failure reporting for zonal statistics and clipping. 'Review feedback' is vague, but the title still points to the main change. The title is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.

The Testing section lists commands, a patch-id check, and manual screenshot checks. Only the Related issue section uses a short follow-up note instead of the 'Closes' or 'Part of' form. This is minor.

I posted one inline comment. A second one failed on line 1, so I'm moving that point into the summary and finishing the review.
Code review
I reviewed the new zonal-statistics feature (the rasterops additions, the tools.rs zonal tool, the field-lookup helper) and the clippy-style tweaks. I read the diff for rasterops.rs and tools.rs in full and checked the rest only briefly. I did not build or run anything.
Bugs
Per-feature error handling is inconsistent (low-medium confidence). In zonal_stats, rasterops::zonal_statistics(...)? is called inside the feature loop. An error there aborts the whole tool, while geometry failures just skip the feature and are reported. Bands and coordinates are already validated, so this is probably unreachable, but the two paths should behave the same. Posted inline at crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1718.
Security
Nothing found. Band and stat parsing reject NaN, infinity, huge values, negatives and decimals before casting. There is no unsafe, and non-test code has no unwrap/expect/panic.
Performance
Repeated setup per feature (low-medium confidence). zonal_statistics is called once per polygon feature, and each call re-checks coordinates and bands, builds a transformer per ring in project_ring, and allocates a mask. For layers with many polygons, the transformer and validation could be hoisted. Posted inline at crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1718.
Quality
Scope creep (medium confidence). find_field_case_insensitive replaces field_index in dissolve, xyTableToPoint, IDW, kriging and summary statistics. That changes existing tools' behaviour and is unrelated to zonal statistics. Split it out or mention it in the PR description. Also check whether field_index is already case-insensitive.
Broad public API (low confidence). PolygonTransformError, Accumulator, transform_*, parse_bands_str and zonal_bands are all pub, and some are re-exported from lib.rs. pub(crate) would be enough unless the engine or UI needs them.
Duplicated parsing (low confidence). Band and stat lists are parsed in near-identical ways (bracket and quote trimming, split on ,/;, dedupe) in parse_bands_str and parse_stats. They could share one helper.
Copied transform code (low confidence). The hole transform loop in transform_polygon_to_lonlat repeats the exterior loop almost line for line.
Changed polygon_mask behaviour (low-medium confidence). It now drops a whole polygon part when any ring fails, where before it dropped only the bad vertices. That is safer for holes, but it affects the other existing callers. Confirm they are fine with it and have tests.
AGENTS.md
The new code follows the no-panic rule outside tests. The tests use unwrap, which is allowed.
New interface strings and docs were not checked for tl! wrapping. Confirm the analysispane.rs additions use it.
Since the PR adds functionality, check that the hostile_params_never_panic tests cover the new tool with junk parameters, and run cargo xtask ci.

Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base bc5218c to PR head 08771fa).
Update the built-in tool count and table for zonalStats.
This PR adds a 21st built-in tool to TOOLS in crates/analysis/src/tools.rs: zonalStats, with the toolbox Analysis › Raster. Line 74 still says "There are 20 built-in tools". The id table on lines 77–98 also has no row for Zonal Statistics. A user who reads this table to find ids for gp.run does not see the new tool.
Change the count to 21 and add the row.

Add built-in zonal statistics with consistent band validation
Fix zonal statistics validation and review feedback
Oct 24, 2026
I read the full diff and the surrounding band-parsing and raster-mask code. I did not build the code or run the tests. The PR is a sound consolidation, with one UX regression and a few small notes.
Bugs
No functional bugs found.
band_from_f64 rejects non-finite, non-positive, fractional and oversized values before the cast.
The new recursive zonal_bands only recurses on numbers and strings, so recursion depth is bounded.
project_ring and polygon_mask now reject the whole polygon part if any ring fails. That is the intended fix for a lost hole enlarging the sampled area.
Quality
Band error message discarded in the workflow pane (inline comment, analysispane.rs). The specific error is replaced with a generic hint. The user no longer sees "raster has bands 1 to N" or which part of the list was invalid. Confidence: medium.
Behaviour change. An empty band string (bands: "") now means band 1 instead of an error. The test and docs are updated, and it matches the UI. This is deliberate, but API callers who relied on the error will notice. Confidence: low.
Test uses expect and unwrap_err. This is acceptable in tests. The new layer_by_name("all_bands_out").unwrap() is inside #[test], so it is fine.
Predicate rewrites. The De Morgan rewrites are logically equivalent and satisfy the stated clippy requirement. I checked each one:
main.rs
model.rs
lib.rs
globe.rs
select.rs
trend.rs
raster/mod.rs
embeddings.rs
agent.rs
Some are harder to read than before, for example !(a || b && c) in main.rs. Confidence: high that they are equivalent.
Unspecific clip warning. The clip warning in imagery.rs reports only a count. Naming the first failure cause would help diagnosis. Confidence: low.
Security
Nothing found. Band input is validated before any cast, with no indexing or panics added.
Performance
Nothing found. project_ring creates one transformer per ring instead of once per polygon_mask call. This is minor, but it could be hoisted for polygons with many holes. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Never crash. The change swaps matches[0] for slice pattern matching and .get(), which follows the rule.
Translatable text. New UI strings use tl!. The catalogs don't need updating in this PR.
Dead code. Removing the unused transform_polygon is clean.
No layering or wasm concerns.

I found no blocking issues. The change consolidates band parsing and makes the raster-grid projection of polygon parts fail per part, and the logic holds up. I read the diff and the surrounding code for parse_bands_str, effective_selected_only and transform_polygon. I did not build the code or run the tests.
Bugs
None found.
Behavior change (low confidence it matters).zonalStats with bands: "" used to be an error and now selects band 1. The updated test and the docs say this is intended. The [""] array form is still rejected (band items cannot be empty strings), so the two forms are now inconsistent. This is harmless, and I suggest only that you confirm it is deliberate.
Recursion (checked, fine).zonal_bands recurses only for array items, and those are limited to numbers and strings, so the depth is bounded.
Large band numbers (checked, fine).band_from_f64 rejects out-of-range values before the cast, so huge numbers cannot saturate on wasm32.
Security
None found. Hostile input is handled by get(), finite checks and clamped band numbers. No new unwrap or expect appears in non-test code. tools.rs replaces ds.fields[i] indexing with .get(i).
Performance
None. project_ring calls r.transformer() once per ring instead of once per call. That adds a little work for polygons with many holes, but only a negligible amount.
Quality
Specific error hidden in the UI (low). In analysispane.rs the pane now shows a generic "Band must be a positive integer…" message plus the raster's band range. It no longer shows the specific parse error, such as "band numbers must be integers" or "empty brackets". The generic text is translatable and the range is useful, but the detail is lost.
Removed public function (checked, fine).transform_polygon was pub and is now deleted. I found no remaining uses in the repo.
Dead branch (low). In polygon_mask_with_failures, rings.is_empty() is handled separately. project_ring already rejects short rings, so empty parts could be handled uniformly. This is a nit.
Good changes. Merging the duplicated band-parsing code into band_from_f64 and zonal_bands is a clear improvement. The tests cover the new behavior well, including the 4294967297 band value, partial-part retention, the UI band range and the clip messages.
AGENTS.md
Translatable text (OK). The new UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. Catalog entries are not required.
Never crash (OK). No unwrap or expect was added to non-test code.
Regression tests (OK). Regression tests were added for the new failure paths.
