fix(edit): discard stale vertex drag gestures - #867
A queued mouse release could apply an old vertex preview after the source geometry was replaced or undone. If the layer, row and vertex address still existed, the release overwrote the current geometry and could create a new edit after undo.
Capture the gesture's project/map context and a weak identity of its source rows. Cancel stale previews and their pending pointer action before drawing, updating or committing them. This does not retain source rows or clone geometry, and keeps VertexDrag copyable. Any row edit in the source layer, loss of edit eligibility, map switch/replacement or map rename cancels conservatively; ordinary styling and camera changes can continue the drag.
The change is limited to two UI implementation files and one regression file. edit.vertex parameters, snapping priority/exclusion, closed-line versus polygon-ring semantics, immediate edge clicks and single-step undo remain unchanged. No dependency or project-format changes.
Testing
Two real-pointer regressions fail against the unmodified baseline: geometry replacement and undo during a held drag. Both pass with the fix.
The original 23 targeted UI tests passed on Windows x86_64 (Rust 1.98.0), macOS ARM64 and Linux ARM64 (Rust 1.95.0): 13 ownership regressions, 5 existing vertex-snapping tests and 5 existing Point/MultiPoint gesture tests. Command: cargo test --locked --offline -p rustgis-ui-egui --test vertex_drag_ownership --test vertex_snapping --test snapping_point_types.
Follow-up review regression: renaming_active_map_rejects_queued_release passed on Windows with --exact, covering both movement and midpoint insertion. It changes only the map name while keeping the row allocation, map slot, project generation and undo history unchanged, then checks cancellation and an unchanged source after release. The original 23 cases were not rerun; the added case has not been rerun on macOS/Linux.
Ownership regressions also cover redo, row reuse without a geometry revision bump, cloned maps sharing rows, map-slot replacement, project reopening, selection/visibility/editability loss, insertion cancellation, normal move/insertion undo/redo, no-op releases, style/camera changes and closure semantics.
Initial-patch UI library/ownership-test Clippy with -D warnings, the UI library's wasm32-unknown-unknown check, changed-file rustfmt and diff checks passed.
Private-item Rustdoc built for the initial patch; its 32 added/adjusted named functions and test helpers are documented. The follow-up adds one documented regression (33 named functions in the local inventory). Seven documentation warnings were traced to unchanged baseline source lines; no new warning was introduced.
Three actual headless application screenshots were inspected: a rotated valid preview, cancellation after geometry replacement, and a normally committed insertion. Screenshot drivers/images are not included in this patch.
The original three-platform results, Clippy/WASM/Rustdoc checks and screenshots are reused because production behavior and the original tests are unchanged. The review follow-up ran only the new exact Windows test and changed-file format/diff checks. Full workspace CI, Linux x86_64 runtime and browser runtime were not run locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Vertex-drag edits are canceled if the map, project, geometry, or editing state changes during a drag, preventing a delayed release from modifying a different or outdated feature.
Drag previews remain available until release, and edits are committed only once the drag completes. Returning a vertex to its original position does not create an edit, and closed-line and polygon behavior remains consistent.
Changes to styling or the camera do not interrupt an otherwise valid vertex drag.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
Vertex drags now retain an identity for their source project, map, feature rows, and target vertex. The UI cancels a drag when that context or editing eligibility changes. Integration tests cover stale releases and valid commit behavior.

This PR stops a held Edit Vertices drag from being committed against rows that changed after the press. It does this with a DragOwner that records the project id, map slot, map name and a Weak pointer to the layer's rows. cancel_stale_drag runs on every map show and at the start of drag_to and drag_stop. I found no blocking problems. I read the diff and Features::allocation_key but did not run the tests or the build.
Bugs
None found. The ownership check relies on Features::allocation_key, which exists in crates/data/src/lib.rs. Its doc comment says any mutable row access drops the weak identity, so edits without touch_geometry are covered. Camera and style changes leave the gesture alone, as the test style_and_camera_changes_keep_a_valid_drag expects. (Confidence: medium-high. I checked the logic by reading, not by running it.)
Behaviour note, low confidence: any edit to the layer's rows during a drag cancels the gesture, including attribute edits that don't touch the dragged vertex. The doc comment says this is deliberate ("cancels conservatively"), and it fails safe.
Security
None. All new data is internal state, and the drag is cancelled when its source is gone. cancel_stale_drag and DragOwner::capture use get-style access (map.layer(..)?, is_some_and), with no indexing and no panics in non-test code.
Performance
matches runs once per frame during a drag. It calls targets(app) and scans it linearly, which is fine for the small selections this tool works on. cancel_stale_drag also runs on every map show, but it returns early when no drag is active.
Holding a Weak means a later Arc::make_mut on the rows moves them into a new allocation instead of mutating in place. This is a pointer move, not a clone of the rows. (Low impact.)
Quality
Nit, low confidence: drag_stop calls cancel_stale_drag and then takes vertex_drag. That is correct, but cancel_vertex_drag also clears self.drag when its kind is Vertex, so a stale release is swallowed. A short comment in drag_stop saying this would help future readers.
The test file is thorough. It covers undo, redo, replaced rows, map clone, slot replacement, project reopen, ineligible source, in-place edits and the closure semantics. The unwrap() and panic! calls in it are in test code, which the repo allows.
Nit: a blank line is missing between undo_during_drag_rejects_queued_release and the doc comment for redo_during_drag_rejects_queued_release.
AGENTS.md
No new user-visible strings, so tl! is not needed. No unsafe or non-test panics. Layering is respected, and the changes stay in L6 ui-egui. No new dependencies or assets.
Please confirm that cargo xtask ci passed.

Minor perf and robustness (confidence: low-medium). matches calls targets(app), which rebuilds the full editable-target list. It runs on every mapview::show, and again in drag_to and drag_stop, so a held drag does it two to three times per frame. On large selections that is wasted work. The ptr_eq check already covers row identity, so you could check eligibility for just d.layer and d.row instead of enumerating every target. Also, any in-place row mutation of that layer cancels the drag. If a refreshing layer replaces its rows mid-drag, the gesture is silently dropped. That is deliberate and documented, but worth knowing about.
The PR stops a held vertex drag from committing onto source rows that changed during the gesture. It records a DragOwner when the drag starts. The owner holds the project id, map slot, map name and a Weak pointer to the layer's feature allocation. The owner is checked before drawing, on each pointer move and on release. A mismatch cancels the preview and discards the pending release. I could only read the code, so I did not run the tests.
Bugs
No defects found (confidence: medium-high). I checked these cases:
Features::allocation_key returns a Weak, so any Arc::make_mut edit changes the pointer. The Weak also keeps the allocation alive, so a reused address cannot give a false match.
cancel_vertex_drag also clears map.drag when it is a vertex drag, so a stale release is dropped.
Dropping the vertex selection is intended: the row address may now belong to another shape.
drag_stop calls cancel_stale_drag before take(), so a stale release creates no edit and no undo step.
Security
Nothing found.
Performance
DragOwner::matches calls targets(app) on every check (confidence: low-medium). It runs on every mapview::show, in drag_to and in drag_stop, so a held drag does this two to three times per frame. It rebuilds the whole editable-target list each time. Checking only d.layer and d.row would avoid that. See the inline comment.
Quality
Any in-place row change to the layer cancels the drag, including changes from a refreshing or live layer (confidence: low). This is documented and conservative, but a user could lose a drag unexpectedly.
cancel_sketch now also cancels vertex drags (confidence: low). It looks intended, but check that no caller of cancel_sketch runs mid-drag, for example on a tool switch that should preserve the gesture.
The new tests cover the replacement, undo, redo, row reuse, map clone, rename, map removal, project reopen, ineligible source, in-place edit and no-op cases well. The unwrap() and panic! calls are in test code only, so they are allowed.
AGENTS.md
No new unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code.
There are no new user-visible strings, so there are no translation concerns.
There are no new dependencies and no new assets.
The changes stay within L6 and use no std::time, so wasm and layering are unaffected.
I could not run cargo xtask ci, so I could not confirm the quality gates pass.
