Summary

The QGIS projects and styles used to audit the importer (#825, #876, #877), as asked for in deniial00's comment on #876. They are in crates/map/testdata/qgis/ (3.6 MB), and the README there lists what each part is and its licence.

  • generated/ (Apache-2.0, made for this): 90 .qml and 21 projects that QGIS 4.2.3 wrote through its API. Each varies one thing:

    • every symbol layer type, renderer and paint effect;
    • label settings and callouts;
    • data-defined properties and raster renderers;
    • one project per provider;
    • project structure (groups, themes, bookmarks, relations, joins, time);
    • a layout with every item and an atlas;
    • the annotation layer;
    • all-styles.qgz.

    The folder also holds the sample data they use (a small GeoPackage, GeoTIFF, CSVs and GPX, all made up) and generate.py, which writes them again. scrub.py removes the user name and absolute paths QGIS records. types.txt lists the element types QGIS 4.2.3 knows, which is the checklist the corpus covers.

  • smv25/SMV25_CHLV95LN02.qgz: the QGIS project swisstopo publishes with Swiss Map Vector 25, unchanged and zipped. It has 66 layers styled like the national map 1:25,000.

    • Source: Federal Office of Topography swisstopo. It is free geodata (OGD): free use with the source given.
    • SMV25 serves only as a large, demanding real-world QGIS project: 66 layers and about 2,000 symbol layers combining categorized renderers, dashes, markers along lines, font markers, pattern fills, rule-based labels and data-defined settings. It uses a handful of QGIS's features heavily rather than many of them; the generated files cover the breadth. Its Swiss data isn't the goal.
    • SMV25's data (about 760 MB) is not included; the README links its download.
  • Not copied: the QGIS Training Manual's 36 files from QGIS 1.8 to 3.x. They are GPL-2.0, so the README links qgis/QGIS-Training-Data instead.

Changes outside the corpus:

  • A new test, every_corpus_file_reads in crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs, reads every style and project (.qgz included) and checks:
    • each project has its layers;
    • SMV25 has its 66 layers in EPSG:2056.
  • ATTRIBUTION.md gets rows for the generated corpus and the swisstopo project.
  • CITATION.cff adds me as an author.

One point for the maintainer: AGENTS.md says "no third-party vendor … styles". The swisstopo project is a third-party style, included here as test data under swisstopo's open terms with attribution. If you'd rather not have it in the repo, I'll take it out and link it like the Training Manual.

Testing

  • cargo fmt, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test --workspace and cargo xtask layers all pass. Two font tests were skipped because they fail locally only, on this machine's fonts.
  • generate.py was run again in QGIS 4.2.3 (Flatpak) into a scratch folder. It wrote everything, and no user name or absolute path remained.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added attribution and licensing details for the QGIS test corpus and Swiss map project, including contributor and source information.
    • Documented the sample styles and projects, data sources, excluded datasets, and regeneration steps.
    • Updated citation metadata with an additional author.
  • Tests
    • Expanded checks across QGIS styles and projects, including compressed project files. Verified the Swiss map project’s layer count and coordinate system.

90 styles and 21 projects QGIS 4.2.3 wrote through its API, each varying one thing (every
symbol layer, renderer, paint effect, label setting, raster renderer, provider, project
structure, layout and annotation item), with their sample data and the generator; and the
QGIS project swisstopo publishes with Swiss Map Vector 25 (source: swisstopo, free geodata).
every_corpus_file_reads reads each one. The README links the QGIS Training Manual's files
(GPL-2.0) and SMV25's data instead of copying them.

Code review

This PR adds a QGIS test corpus (90 .qml styles, 21 generated projects, the SMV25 project, sample data and the generator scripts). It also adds one test, every_corpus_file_reads, plus attribution and citation entries. It contains almost no production code, so I found nothing that needs a fix. I read the diff and the test, and ran a few repository checks. I did not build or run anything: this session has no way to run cargo.

Bugs

  • None found. The test's use of unwrap is fine because it is test code. rustgis_data::zip::read_matching_within exists with the signature the test calls. The counts the test asserts match the files on disk: 90 styles, and 20 .qgs plus 1 .qgz plus the SMV25 .qgz, which makes 22 projects.

Security

  • None found. The PostGIS and SQL Server projects carry a made-up password (secret) on purpose, and the README says why. I grepped the generated projects and styles for /home/, /Users/ and C:\Users and found no absolute user paths. I did not search the SMV25 archive, which is compressed.

Performance

  • Binary and XML fixtures add about 3.5 MB to the repository. The SMV25 .qgz is 555 KB and the largest generated .qgs files are about 150 KB. This is acceptable for testdata, but each regeneration adds to repository history (confidence: low).

Quality

  • every_corpus_file_reads hard-codes counts (90, 22, 66 layers). Any regeneration or added file breaks the test, so it works as a deliberate tripwire. A short comment saying that the counts must change together with the corpus would help (confidence: low, nit).
  • For .qgz files the test takes the first .qgs entry from the archive. That is fine for these fixtures.
  • The test only checks that each file reads and that projects have layers. It does not check the importer's notes or report content, so it will not catch silent loss of fidelity (confidence: medium, suggestion).

AGENTS.md

  • Assets: The new files have attribution rows in ATTRIBUTION.md. The corpus is original work, and the swisstopo project is credited under OGD terms. Committing binary fixtures (dem.tif, sample.gpkg, .qgz) is a testdata exception and not a screenshot, so it does not conflict with the images-live-elsewhere rule. Confidence: medium. The maintainer should confirm that the swisstopo OGD "source must be given" licence is compatible with the repository's licensing and deny.toml policy.
  • No crash and wasm rules: No production code is affected.
  • CITATION.cff: This adds a new author, Dominik Strebel. That is a maintainer decision, and I am noting it only so it is not missed.

Code review

This PR adds a QGIS test corpus (about 3.5 MB) and one new test, every_corpus_file_reads. The Rust change is small and sound. I raised two inline comments. I did not open the generated .qml and .qgs files or the Python scripts beyond confirming they exist, and I could not run anything.

Bugs

  • None found. rustgis_data::zip::read_matching_within exists with the signature the test uses. The unwraps are in test code only, which AGENTS.md allows.

Security

  • The README says the PostGIS and SQL Server projects carry a made-up password (secret). I found exactly one match in each of those two .qgs files. The /home/ and password= patterns matched nothing else in the .qgs files, so scrub.py appears to have worked there. Confidence: medium. I did not check the .qml files or all-styles.qgz.

Performance

  • The corpus adds 3.5 MB to rustgis-map, and crates/map/Cargo.toml has no exclude. If the crate is published, this ships with it. Confidence: low-medium. Consider exclude = ["testdata/"] if the crate is published.

Quality

  • tests.rs (inline comment): the hard-coded counts (90, 22, 66) are brittle. The test also reads every directory entry, so a stray file such as an _attachments.zip would fail with an unhelpful message. Confidence: medium-low.
  • The test checks that each file parses and has layers. It doesn't check what was read, so a silent regression in the importer would pass. That may be fine for a first corpus. Confidence: low.

AGENTS.md

  • ATTRIBUTION.md (inline comment): the swisstopo SMV25 .qgz is a third-party style, and AGENTS.md says "No third-party vendor … styles". The author raised this in the description. It needs a maintainer decision before merge, along with confirmation that swisstopo's OGD terms allow redistribution inside an Apache-2.0 repository. Confidence: medium.
  • The new ATTRIBUTION.md rows follow the "every asset has a row" rule. Images are not committed, so that rule is not an issue here.
  • README.md says generate.py and scrub.py are Apache-2.0, but neither file's header was checked for a licence line.

Validate corpus membership, not only entry counts.

The README defines every_corpus_file_reads as a check that reads each corpus file. The current test can still pass when one named fixture is removed and another parseable entry replaces it, because it checks only the counts. The README also requires all-styles.qgz to contain every style on its own layer, but the test checks only that the project has at least one layer.

Compare the discovered names with committed expected file sets, and compare all-styles.qgz layer names with the style stems.

Define EXPECTED_STYLE_NAMES and the corresponding expected project-name set from the checked-in corpus.

Code review

This PR adds a QGIS test corpus (styles, projects, sample data and a generator script) and one test that reads every file. I found no correctness or security problems. The one item that needs a maintainer decision is the policy question the author raised.

I checked that rustgis_data::zip::read_matching_within(&[u8], impl Fn(&str)->bool, usize) exists with that signature. I also checked that rustgis-data is already a dependency of the map crate. The corpus holds 90 .qml files, 21 .qgs/.qgz projects under generated/qgs/ and one SMV25 project, so the test's counts of 90 and 22 match. I did not run the test.

Bugs

  • None found.

Security

  • None found. The PostGIS and SQL Server projects carry a made-up password (secret) and point at *.invalid hosts. The README documents this as deliberate, to test that the importer drops the password. Confidence: high.

Performance

  • None found. The corpus adds about 3.5 MB to the repository, mostly the 555 KB SMV25 .qgz and the generated layout and project files. The test reads them once.

Quality

  • crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs: the test hardcodes 90, 22 and 66. Adding or regenerating a corpus file means editing the test too. This is acceptable for a pinned corpus, but a failure message that names the folder would help. Confidence: low, nit.
  • The test uses unwrap() and expect-style calls. That is allowed in test code.
  • The test also reads testdata/ through CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR. It works in the workspace, but would fail if the crate were packaged without testdata. crates/map/Cargo.toml has no include or exclude list, so the files would ship in the crate. Confidence: low.

AGENTS.md

  • Third-party styles: AGENTS.md says "No third-party vendor icons, images, styles, fonts, help text or code." smv25/SMV25_CHLV95LN02.qgz is swisstopo's project and carries its styling. The PR description flags this and offers to remove the file. It is attributed in ATTRIBUTION.md with an OGD licence that allows free use with the source given. The author's point is that it is test data, not a shipped asset. The maintainer should decide whether this fits the rule or whether it should be linked instead, as the GPL training data was. Confidence: medium that it needs an explicit maintainer call.
  • Licence compatibility: the ATTRIBUTION.md row for the SMV25 file says "free use, the source must be given". Make sure that is compatible with the repo's Apache-2.0 licence and with deny.toml or packaging expectations. testdata is probably not in release packages, which would settle it. Confidence: low.
  • Attribution and citation: ATTRIBUTION.md has rows for the new assets, as required. CITATION.cff adds the contributor as an author. That is the maintainer's call, not a defect.
  • No new dependencies and no UI strings, so tl! and the licence notices don't apply.

Code review

I read the test, the docs and the first ~600 lines of the diff, which is mostly generate.py. I did not read the rest of the diff: the 90 .qml files, the .qgs/.qgz projects, the remaining generator scripts and the rest of generate.py. I could not run the tests (no Bash tool, no build).

The PR adds a QGIS importer test corpus: styles and projects written by QGIS 4.2.3, the swisstopo SMV25 project, a generator script, a README, attribution rows, and one test, every_corpus_file_reads, that reads every file.

Bugs

  • None found. The functions the test calls exist with matching signatures: zip::read_matching_within(&[u8], impl Fn(&str)->bool, usize), read_project(&str, &str, &mut Report), read_style(&str, &str, &mut Report), and Project.crs: Option<String>.

Security

  • None found. The README says the PostGIS and SQL Server sources carry a made-up password (secret) and point at .invalid hosts. These are test fixtures that check the importer drops the password.

Performance

  • None. The test reads about 3.5 MB of fixtures, and the zip read is capped at 64 MiB.

Quality

  • Low confidence: the exact counts in the test (90 styles, 22 projects) break whenever a corpus file is added, removed or regenerated. files() also reads every entry in each folder, so a stray file such as .DS_Store or dem.tif.aux.xml would be parsed and fail the test. Filtering by extension and using lower bounds would be sturdier (inline comment posted).
  • Low confidence: the test reads the corpus directly through CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR. That is fine in a native test, but check that it is not compiled for wasm, since the layering rules require the crates to build for wasm32. It is a #[test], so it should be skipped on that target.

AGENTS.md

  • The unwrap() calls are in test code only, which the "never crash" rule allows.
  • ATTRIBUTION.md has rows for the corpus and for SMV25, as the asset rule requires. Check that the committed binary and data files (dem.tif, sample.gpkg, the .qgz files) are all covered, and that the swisstopo OGD terms ("source must be given") are met by that row.
  • Third-party assets must be accounted for. The SMV25 .qgz is third-party data under OGD terms, and ATTRIBUTION.md does list it.
  • CITATION.cff gains the contributor as an author. That is the maintainer's call, so I flag it only for awareness.

Code review

The PR adds a QGIS test corpus under crates/map/testdata/qgis/ and one new test, every_corpus_file_reads. I found no bugs and no security problems. There is one open policy question and one small test gap.

I checked these things:

  • The test's calls match real signatures: read_style, read_project and rustgis_data::zip::read_matching_within.
  • The expected counts agree with the files on disk: 90 .qml files and 21 generated projects plus the SMV25 one, which makes 22.
  • A search of the testdata for /home/ found no leaked absolute paths.
  • unwrap is used only in test code, which is allowed.

Bugs

None found.

Security

None found. The made-up secret password in the PostGIS and SQL Server projects is test data. It points at .invalid hosts.

Performance

None. The test reads about 3.5 MB of files once.

Quality

  • The README says the made-up password exists "to test that the importer drops it", but every_corpus_file_reads never asserts that. Either add an assertion or soften the README. Confidence: low-medium. Inline comment posted.
  • The test hard-codes the counts 90, 22 and 66. That works as a guard, but every corpus change needs a test edit.
  • CITATION.cff adds the PR author as a citation author. The maintainer should confirm that.

AGENTS.md

  • AGENTS.md says "No third-party vendor … styles". The swisstopo SMV25 .qgz is a third-party QGIS project with styles. It has an ATTRIBUTION.md row and open OGD terms, and the PR itself asks the maintainer to decide. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted.
  • The new ATTRIBUTION.md rows cover the generated corpus and SMV25. The corpus README rows state their licences.
  • No dependencies were added, and the code stays within the layer rules.

Code review

PR #881 adds a QGIS test corpus (90 .qml styles, 21 generated projects, and swisstopo's SMV25 project). It also adds the every_corpus_file_reads test, two ATTRIBUTION.md rows and a CITATION.cff author. I read the test, the README and the corpus layout. I did not read the binary files or most of the generated XML, and I could not run the tests. The review found no bugs. The only inline comment is a maintainability one.

Bugs

  • None found. rustgis_data::zip::read_matching_within, read_style and read_project exist with the signatures the test uses, and rustgis-data is already a dependency of rustgis-map. Report and Project both derive Debug, so the password check compiles. (high confidence)

Security

  • The made-up password secret appears only in provider-postgres.qgs and provider-mssql.qgs, and the test checks that it never reaches the layers or the notes. That is a sound regression guard. (high confidence)
  • The service and database sources use .invalid hosts, and scrub.py removes the user name and absolute paths. I found nothing that leaks a real secret. (medium confidence, as I did not read every generated file)

Performance

  • The test reads about 112 files and a 555 KB .qgz, with a 64 MB inflate budget. That is cheap.
  • The 3.5 MB of binary and XML test data will stay in git history for good. (low severity)

Quality

  • crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs:435: the hard-coded counts (90, 22, 66) make the test brittle as the corpus grows, and files() doesn't filter by extension. This is the inline comment. (medium-low confidence)
  • The test uses unwrap() and expect-style panics freely. tests.rs already has about 25 such calls, so this matches the file's style and the "no unwrap in non-test code" rule.

AGENTS.md

  • The rule "No third-party vendor … styles" conflicts with including swisstopo's SMV25_CHLV95LN02.qgz. The PR description flags this itself and offers to remove it, so it is a decision for the maintainer.
  • The licence looks compatible. ATTRIBUTION.md has rows for both the generated corpus and the swisstopo project. swisstopo's OGD terms allow free use with the source given, and the row says so. (medium confidence)
  • CITATION.cff adds the contributor as an author. That is the maintainer's call, not a code issue.
  • AGENTS.md asks for cargo xtask ci before a commit. The PR description reports fmt, clippy, test and layers passing, but not the full xtask ci, and two font tests were skipped locally.
  • The new test calls rustgis_data::zip, which is not a new dependency, so cargo xtask notices and deny.toml are not affected. The wasm and layering rules don't apply, because the change is test-only.

Updated in aa0329d: merged current main and retained both the corpus test and the raster-import tests from #877. To follow the repository asset rule, removed the bundled swisstopo project and kept its external download links in the corpus README. The automated corpus now contains 90 generated styles and 21 generated projects. File enumeration filters by extension, pinned-count failures list the paths, and the existing password-redaction assertion is preserved. All seven outstanding bot threads have replies and are resolved. Pre-commit and the local WebAssembly build passed; the full local CI run and latest GitHub checks are still running.

Code review

This PR adds a QGIS test corpus (90 .qml styles, 21 projects, sample data, and the generator scripts), a corpus-reading test, and attribution entries. I found no blocking issues.

Bugs

  • None found. The test's rustgis_data::zip::read_matching_within call matches the signature in crates/data/src/zip.rs:122. The pinned counts (90 styles, 21 projects) match the files on disk.

Security

  • No absolute paths such as /home/ or /Users/ remain in the corpus, so the scrub step worked.
  • The made-up secret password in the PostGIS and SQL Server projects is covered by the test assertion that it never reaches the layers or notes. I could not confirm that the assertion is strong enough. It only checks the Debug output for the substring secret. That is a reasonable guard (confidence: medium).

Quality

  • every_corpus_file_reads (crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs) uses unwrap() in the test. That is allowed in test code. A failing file in the corpus panics with its path, which is useful.
  • The test only checks that each file reads without error and that each project has layers. It does not check the contents, such as renderer types, for any file. This is acceptable for a corpus smoke test. Some per-feature assertions would catch silent regressions in the importer (confidence: low).
  • The hard-coded counts 90 and 21 mean any added fixture needs a test edit. That is intended, as the comment says.
  • README.md mentions sample.sqlite, which is not committed. The SpatiaLite project that reads it will have a dangling data source. The test does not open data sources, so this is harmless (confidence: medium).
  • About 3 MB of fixtures are added, including 140 KB binaries (sample.gpkg, dem.tif). That is reasonable for a test corpus.

AGENTS.md

  • The ATTRIBUTION.md row is added for the new assets, as required.
  • No new dependencies are added, and nothing below apps/ is affected for wasm.
  • The test runs natively only, and the fixtures are read from CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR, which is fine for a unit test.
  • No translatable UI text is added.
  • AGENTS.md says the repo does not carry third-party vendor assets. The corpus is generated and made up, and the README says the SMV25 and Training Manual data are deliberately left out. This complies.
  • CITATION.cff adds the contributor as an author. That is a maintainer decision, not a defect.

Final verification for aa0329d: every check on the latest push has finished successfully (release-only jobs were skipped), and the PR is mergeable. A final review-thread read found no unresolved threads. Local pre-commit, the full cargo xtask ci suite, and the WebAssembly build also passed. The conflict in crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs was resolved by retaining both main’s raster-import tests and the corpus smoke test. No screenshots are needed for this test-data change.
