docs: define ribbon design and contribution guidelines - #903
Define each tab’s purpose, including the distinction between Data exports and Publish products.
Preserve useful shortcuts to pane sections while merging controls that reach the same destination.
Keep View › Windows complete and task-specific modes beside their tools.
Use consistent names and icons, and split buttons with clear, fixed defaults.
Make the selected layer explicit; keep everyday controls on the ribbon and deeper settings in panes.
Evaluate layouts through real workflows, clicks, tab switches and laptop-width screenshots—not control counts alone.
Add a placement checklist for feature PRs.
The guidelines live in docs/contributing.md, linked from CONTRIBUTING.md and the architecture documentation. They describe the intended direction without implying that the current UI already follows every rule. Labeling is marked as planned; Directions remains an interim Home exception until Analyze is reorganised, following the later exchange in the discussion.
Documentation only; no ribbon controls, command ids or parameters change.
Testing
zensical build — passed with “No issues found”.
Generated HTML smoke check — verified the guideline sections, tab-purpose table and cross-links between the contributor and architecture pages.
cargo xtask ci — passed (formatting, Clippy, workspace tests and layering).
SKIP=cargo-fmt,cargo-clippy pre-commit run --all-files — passed; Rust checks covered by cargo xtask ci.
The pull request adds ribbon guidelines to the contributing documentation and links to them from the proposal checklist, architecture documentation, and agent guidance. The guidelines cover tab purposes, feature placement, control choices, workflow checks, and pull request documentation.

A rabbit reads the ribbon guide, Then checks each tab and path beside. A button says what it will do, Its default action stays in view. Before the merge, the checks are done, And every feature keeps a route.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
This PR only changes documentation: a new "Ribbon guidelines" section in docs/contributing.md, plus links to it from CONTRIBUTING.md and docs/architecture.md. It changes no code, so there is no crash, wasm, layering or i18n risk. I checked the following:
Anchors:#ribbon-guidelines is the new heading. architecture.md#everything-is-a-command and contributing.md#documentation both exist (docs/architecture.md:21, docs/contributing.md:153).
ui_shot reference: the Documentation section covers it (docs/contributing.md:167).
Assets: the PR adds no images, icons or fonts, so ATTRIBUTION.md and the rule against vendor assets don't apply.
Consistency with AGENTS.md: the guidance on the "everything is a command" rule, keeping CLI ids stable, and translatable strings matches what AGENTS.md says.

Quality
Self-link (nit, high confidence):docs/contributing.md:124 links to contributing.md#documentation from inside contributing.md. #documentation is simpler and still works.
Tab table (low confidence): the table lists Labeling, Plugins, Settings and Help. If the current ribbon doesn't have all of them, a reader could be confused. The intro does say the guidelines aren't a claim the ribbon already follows every rule, and Labeling is marked "(planned)", so this is minor.
Credit (nit): the credit to named contributors in the intro suits a PR description better than the long-lived contributor docs, but that is a style choice.
AGENTS.md
No violations.
AGENTS.md's "Before picking work" step and CONTRIBUTING.md already point contributors to the right place, and the new link from the proposal step fits that flow.
Optional: AGENTS.md could point agents to the ribbon guidelines for UI work. That is not required.

Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 6ef386d to PR head 7d6b909)
Adds "labels say what happens", with Go To XY as its example.
Splits the checklist: adding a control needs its task, tab, how it opens and a screenshot; moves and removals also need the remaining route and the workflow comparison.
Uses 1366 px instead of "laptop width".
Marks the layer chooser as planned.
Uses Select as the split-button example, since Add Data isn't one yet.
Adds a pointer from AGENTS.md.
Merge it into this branch if it looks right, or take whatever parts you like.
This PR only changes documentation: AGENTS.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, docs/architecture.md and a new "Ribbon guidelines" section in docs/contributing.md. I found no bugs, security problems or performance issues. I did not run the docs build or the app.
I checked the cross-links:
docs/contributing.md#ribbon-guidelines exists, and so does the #documentation anchor used for the ui_shot link.
architecture.md#everything-is-a-command matches the heading "Everything is a command".
The root CONTRIBUTING.md and AGENTS.md links to docs/contributing.md#ribbon-guidelines are valid relative paths.

Directions exception missing (low confidence, minor). The PR description says "Directions remains an interim Home exception until Analyze is reorganised". The guidelines never name it. They only describe the interim-exception rule in general (docs/contributing.md, "If a control seems to fit two tabs…"). Either add a one-line mention or drop it from the description, so the rule isn't left to the discussion thread.
Planned features stated as policy (low confidence, nit). The text says the layer chooser ("Styling: Countries ▾") is "planned" and the Labeling tab is "planned". It might be worth linking the tracking issue or ROADMAP entry so the doc doesn't go stale once they land. The doc does mark them as planned, so this is optional.
Heavy process rule (low confidence, nit). The PR checklist asks for before/after click and tab-switch counts and a 1366 px screenshot. That is reasonable for ribbon PRs, but AGENTS.md says screenshots are not committed to the repo (they live in rustgis-assets). Saying so in the checklist ("attach in the PR, don't commit") would avoid confusion.
AGENTS.md
The added bullet follows the existing format and links to docs that exist.
No rule is violated. No code, assets, interface strings or dependencies change, so the tl!, wasm, layering and attribution rules are not affected.
The PR reports cargo xtask ci as passing.

State one fixed default in the split-button example.
The preceding rule requires one fixed everyday default. The example says Select's main action is “click or box selection”, which names two possible defaults. State one primary action and place the other selection mode in the arrow menu.
