ArcGIS: sign in to ArcGIS Online and Enterprise portals with OAuth - #915
Secured ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online services answer error 499 "Token Required", and a service address given with ?token=… only authorized the first request: the layers, tiles and feature pages RustGIS builds from the service's document were fetched without it (the reporter's case).
What changed
Sign in to ArcGIS (a folded section in Add From Service, shown for ArcGIS addresses; arcgis.signIn): OAuth 2.0 authorization code with PKCE (S256) in the system browser, against an ArcGIS Online organization or an ArcGIS Enterprise portal. The user signs in on the portal's own page (SSO and MFA included); RustGIS never sees a password. The browser returns to a loopback callback, http://127.0.0.1:7290/arcgis/callback, which the portal admin registers on an OAuth app (Developer credentials). The portal and client ID are remembered; tokens are not.
Scoped token header: the token goes in X-Esri-Authorization, from both the native fetcher (per redirect hop, like the Earthdata token) and the browser's fetch, only to the portal and the organization's own hosted services (*.arcgis.com/<org id>/…, from portals/self) on ArcGIS Online, or the portal's host and its federated servers (portals/self/servers) on Enterprise. Esri basemaps and other orgs' services never get it, so nothing is billed to the user's org by accident.
Renewal and sign-out: the access token is renewed from the refresh token before it expires (one renewal at a time); a refused renewal ends the session. Sign out (arcgis.signOut) forgets it and revokes the refresh token. arcgis.status lists sessions, never tokens.
?token= addresses: service.layers and service.add take the token parameter out of an ArcGIS REST address and keep it for that ArcGIS Server, so child requests carry it and the project never stores it. arcgis.token does the same explicitly. This path works in the browser build too.
A 499 or 498 answer now says how to sign in.
Docs: Data formats › Secured ArcGIS services.
Learned from GeoLibre's arcgis-oauth.ts: PKCE flow, expiration=20160, token and revoke calls on www.arcgis.com for org portals, in-memory sessions keyed by portal, the client ID remembered per portal.
Verified against ArcGIS Online (myutk.maps.arcgis.com)
Before writing the code, with a throwaway OAuth app registered in that org:
ArcGIS matches the redirect URL exactly: another port, localhost instead of 127.0.0.1, another path, or the OOB URN are all refused with "Invalid redirect_uri". So RustGIS uses a fixed, documented port (overridable with "port").
A private hosted FeatureServer answers 499 without a token and works with X-Esri-Authorization: Bearer … (service JSON, query?returnCountOnly, f=geojson). Its CORS allows that header, so the browser build can send it.
Tests
rustgis-tilesarcgis_auth::tests: portal addresses, endpoints and request forms (RFC 7636 PKCE vector), token answers and refusals, the scopes of an Online and an Enterprise sign-in (look-alike hosts, other orgs, basemaps, plain HTTP and user info refused), ?token= adoption, a server token over a portal sign-in.
rustgis-enginean_arcgis_token_in_a_service_address_reaches_its_layers: the reported case through service.layers/service.add; the tile and query addresses carry the token, the project and listings never do, and arcgis.signOut drops it.
Not in this PR
The OAuth sign-in in the browser build (it needs a same-origin callback page); the browser takes tokens with the address for now.
End to end against ArcGIS Online
The release CLI's MCP server (rustgis-cli mcp --yes), signed in to myutk.maps.arcgis.com with an OAuth app registered there:
service.layers on a private hosted FeatureServer (Las_Vegas_Buildings): Token Required with the new hint.
arcgis.signIn gave the portal's page; in Chrome, Allow, and the browser landed on RustGIS's "Signed in" page. arcgis.status: signed in as the org user, renews.
service.layers listed the layer; service.add read all 540 features (paged queries with the header); the export is below.
arcgis.signOut, then service.layers answered Token Required again.
Also: cargo xtask ci green apart from three connectiontree UI tests that timed out under load and pass when rerun; the wasm build passes.

Add From Service › Sign in to ArcGIS, light and dark:
The 540 buildings of the private FeatureServer, read after signing in:
Secured ArcGIS services answer error 499 "Token Required", and a
service address given with ?token=... only authorized the first
request: the layers, tiles and feature pages built from the service's
document were fetched without it.
Sign in to ArcGIS (Add From Service, arcgis.signIn) runs OAuth 2.0
authorization code with PKCE in the system browser against an ArcGIS
Online organization or an Enterprise portal, returning to a loopback
callback at http://127.0.0.1:7290/arcgis/callback (ArcGIS matches the
registered redirect URL exactly). The session's token goes in the
X-Esri-Authorization header, from the native fetcher and the browser's,
only to the portal and the organization's hosted services (ArcGIS
Online) or the portal's host and federated servers (Enterprise). It is
renewed with the refresh token, revoked on sign-out, and kept in memory
only. A ?token=... in a service address is now taken out of the address
and kept for that ArcGIS Server, so its child requests carry it too
(arcgis.token does the same). A 499 or 498 answer says how to sign in.

ArcGIS sign-in works as designed, but a few edge cases remain open. Refresh tokens that the portal rejects may not clear the session, and token scope matching and the browser request timeout need follow-up. Browser requests also put the token in the URL, which request logs can retain, and the docs should say so. Resolve or explicitly accept the refresh-handling and scope-matching items before merging.

Explanation
The title "ArcGIS: sign in to ArcGIS Online and Enterprise portals with OAuth" matches the main change in the changeset. The changeset adds ArcGIS OAuth 2.0 authorization code sign-in with PKCE for ArcGIS Online and Enterprise portals, along with token renewal, sign-out, and token propagation to derived service requests. The title covers the primary feature but omits the secondary parts, such as scoped token handling and ?token= address propagation. It is concise, specific, and free of noise.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has a Summary section that explains the change and its motivation (error 499 on secured services, and a ?token= address that authorized only the first request). It has a Testing section with specific tests, a manual end-to-end run against ArcGIS Online, and CI results. The template's Related issue section is handled with "Fixes #914" at the end, which is a close-keyword reference but sits below the Screenshots section rather than under a "Related issue" heading. The description also adds extra sections (What changed, Screenshots, Not in this PR), which go beyond the template but do not conflict with it. The required information is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Active direct issue [#914] requires ArcGIS Enterprise OAuth 2.0 authorization-code flow with PKCE, portal and client ID input, callback and token exchange, session token storage, and authentication of derived REST requests. The reviewed changes implement portal discovery, PKCE sign-in, callback handling, in-memory sessions, renewal, revocation, and scoped authorization for portal and federated-server services. Native and browser fetch paths apply ArcGIS authorization. Service commands adopt ?token= credentials for child requests without storing them in projects. The changes include focused authentication and propagation tests.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed changes remain connected to [#914]. ArcGIS Online support, browser support, renewal, sign-out, scoped authorization, error guidance, UI controls, documentation, network permissions, and focused tests support secured ArcGIS REST connections. The ?token= propagation path directly addresses the issue's child-request failure. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

A rabbit taps the portal door, PKCE opens paths to explore. Tokens travel, scoped and neat, Sessions guide each service sheet. The callback fades; the cache is clear, And ArcGIS requests draw near.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
I focused on crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs and the engine commands in cmd/arcgis.rs. I did not read the UI, web or docs changes, the tests, or the other diff hunks beyond a quick pass. I did not build or run anything.
The design is sound:
Auth flow: OAuth with PKCE, a state check on the callback, and no redirects on token requests.
Token handling: tokens stay in memory only, Grant's Debug output hides them, and the callback page escapes what it echoes.
Token scope: the Scope allow-list limits where a token is sent.
Bugs
Sign-in restart can fail to bind (arcgis_auth.rs:672, medium confidence): cancel_sign_in() only sets a flag. The old callback thread keeps its listener for up to about 50 ms, or about 2 s while reading a stalled connection. Starting a new sign-in straight away can fail with AddrInUse, and the "is another sign-in open?" message is misleading. Retrying the bind briefly would fix it.
Token refresh can stall requests (arcgis_auth.rs:829, medium confidence): if the portal is unreachable, the session is kept, which is right. But every request to a covered URL then retries the refresh behind the RENEWING lock, with a 30 s timeout each. A network blip can stall loading for a long time. Remember the last failed attempt and back off.
Token overwrites sign-in (arcgis_auth.rs:829, low confidence): sessions are keyed by portal. Calling arcgis.token with an address that resolves to a signed-in portal's base replaces the OAuth session without revoking its refresh token.
Security
Nothing blocking found. Tokens reach only the origins and paths a session's Scope covers, and the callback server binds to 127.0.0.1 only.
Performance
The token-refresh serialization above is the only concern.
Quality
No other issues found.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic in the non-test code I read, and the new sign-in code is split cleanly between wasm and native builds. I did not check the tl! interface-text wrapping in the UI code or whether the new commands are covered by the hostile-parameter test.

I read the diff and the whole of arcgis_auth.rs. I did not read arcgis/tests.rs, arcgisui.rs, the cache and UI changes, or the docs, and I did not run any tests. The PR adds ArcGIS sign-in (OAuth with PKCE, a loopback callback server, in-memory sessions with scoped tokens) and ?token= handling. The design is careful. Tokens stay in memory only, and Debug and Info never show them. A token goes only to the origins and paths its session covers. Redirects are disabled on token requests, and the callback checks state and listens on 127.0.0.1 only.
Bugs
Restarting a sign-in can fail with "address in use" (medium confidence, arcgis_auth.rs:674-677). cancel_sign_in() only sets a flag, so the old listener is still bound when the new bind runs. A quick retry fails with a misleading "is another sign-in open?" error.
A literal + in a ?token= value is decoded to a space (medium-low confidence, arcgis_auth.rs:426-429). valid_token allows +, but after decoding it becomes a space, so add_token rejects the token or alters it.
Security
No blocking issues found.
The Enterprise portal scope covers the whole portal host (path /). That is reasonable behind one web adaptor, but it is broader than the federated servers alone (low confidence, informational).
Performance
Nothing notable.
The callback server handles one connection at a time, with 2 s read timeouts. A local process holding a connection open can delay the real callback. This is minor and bounded by the 5-minute timeout.
Quality
arcgis.signOut is missing from NETWORK in crates/engine/src/cmd/tiles.rs (low-medium confidence). It posts revocations to the portal.
refused_hint in arcgis_auth.rs duplicates the 499/498 hint text that ogc.rs now hard-codes. Reusing it would keep the two messages from drifting apart.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, panic or unsafe in the non-test code I read. Native-only code is gated for wasm, and web.rs handles the header separately. I did not check whether new UI strings use tl!, or whether new asset rows are needed.

Normalize or reject dot-segment paths before scope checks.
In the browser path, Scope::covers can match /covered/../uncovered against /covered/. The Fetch URL parser removes dot segments before sending the request, so the token can be sent to /uncovered. The same issue applies to Scope::Org.
Reject dot-segment paths, including percent-encoded forms, or canonicalize the path before session selection. Add regression tests for Prefix and Org scopes.

Minor · Rank sessions by matching scope specificity. · arcgis_auth.rs:458
The server-token preference is intentional over a broader portal sign-in, but the current key applies it before scope specificity. A broad address-token scope can therefore override a narrower OAuth scope. portal.len() does not measure the matching scope.
Rank the matching scope first, then use the address-token flag as a tie-breaker.

- Build for wasm: status no longer mutates a value the browser build
leaves alone (unused_mut under -D warnings).
- A new sign-in retries binding the callback port for a few seconds
while a cancelled one lets go of it.
- A renewal the portal couldn't be reached for isn't retried for 30 s,
so requests don't each wait on another attempt.
- A token given for a portal's own address sits beside its sign-in
instead of replacing it.
- Signing out clears the tile cache; adopting a new ?token= does too,
so refused tiles are asked for again.
- ?token= is taken out of ArcGIS REST addresses only.
- A pasted token's + stays a +.
- Add From Service shows Sign in to ArcGIS for a service known as
ArcGIS by its answer, or refused for a token.
- arcgis.signOut is a network command (it revokes at the portal).
- Docs: the callback address is RustGIS's; ArcGIS requires the one
registered.
The design is sound: OAuth with PKCE, a state check, in-memory sessions, tokens scoped per origin, and no redirects on token calls. The code follows the "never crash" rules, using get() rather than indexing and no unwrap. I found nothing blocking, only the items below. I read the diff and the main source files; I did not build the code or run the tests.
Bugs
None confirmed.
The single-threaded callback server can be held up by a local client that trickles bytes. The read timeout resets on every read, so the 5-minute deadline and cancel are not enforced during a read (arcgis_auth.rs:904). Local only, low-medium confidence.
Security
An Enterprise portal's token scope is the whole origin (path: "/"), not just the portal's path (arcgis_auth.rs:305). On a shared host, the token goes to other apps there. This may be intended, so I'd document it or narrow it. Low-medium confidence.
Sending the ?token= value as Authorization: Bearer in X-Esri-Authorization works on current ArcGIS. Older ArcGIS Server versions that only accept a token query parameter would see failures after the token is stripped from the address. Low confidence, and worth a docs note.
Performance
A renewal holds a global mutex during a blocking POST of up to 30 s, so concurrent tile workers wait on it. This is documented as intended, with retry_at as the backoff. No change requested.
Quality
refused_hint is used only by its own test, and the same wording is duplicated in ogc.rs (arcgis_auth.rs:585). The two copies can drift. Medium confidence.
A line in web.rs is over 140 characters, so cargo fmt --check will likely fail (web.rs:576). Formatting only.
AGENTS.md
Interface text uses tl!/i18n::fmt, the layering is respected, the wasm paths are cfg-gated, and the new dependencies are workspace or standard crates.
I could not check whether THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt was regenerated after adding getrandom and base64 to rustgis-tiles. I only saw a Cargo.lock change, so run cargo xtask notices. Low confidence.

ArcGIS Online and its organizations need no client id now: a sign-in
without one uses RustGIS's own OAuth app (registered on ArcGIS Online
with the desktop's loopback callback and the web app's callback page).
An Enterprise portal still registers its own.
The web app signs in too: the portal's page opens in a pop-up window
that comes back to the app's oauth-callback.html, whose address the
app reads (same origin), then exchanges the code with the browser's
fetch and keeps the session as the desktop does. The fetcher renews an
access token before it expires. Renewal and discovery are now sans-I/O
steps (renewal_due/renewal_done, discovery_url/discovered_scopes) that

Low confidence. The federated server URLs come from the portal's JSON answer and each one gets the bearer token, with no check that it relates to the portal. The portal is already trusted, and it issued the token. Still, a compromised or misconfigured portal can list https://anything/ and receive the token. Consider requiring servers to share the portal's registrable domain, or ask the user to confirm foreign hosts.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not changed: the portal is the authority that issued the token, and federated servers are routinely on other hosts or domains (maps.agency.gov behind gis.agency.org), so a same-domain rule would break real deployments. Leaving this open for the maintainer.
I read the new arcgis_auth module, the web and desktop sign-in paths, the engine commands, the ?token= handling, the fetcher hooks and the tests. I did not build or run anything. The design is careful: PKCE with state checks, tokens scoped per origin and path, HTML-escaped callback pages, no redirects on token requests, and a Debug impl that hides tokens. I found one likely test flake and a few smaller points.
Bugs
Likely flaky engine test (medium confidence).hostile_params_never_panic runs arcgis.signOut with junk params, and most junk objects have no portal. That calls sign_out(None), which wipes the process-wide session store. an_arcgis_token_in_a_service_address_reaches_its_layers runs in parallel in the same binary and asserts on that store, so it can fail intermittently. Skip arcgis.signOut in the hostile list (as is done for arcgis.signIn) and cover it with a dedicated test. Inline comment at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:1723.
Security
Path scope doesn't normalise dot segments (low confidence).Scope::covers uses a raw prefix match. A URL such as https://host/server/../other gets the token, and a client that normalises the path then sends the request to /other on the same host. The leak stays within the origin. Inline comment at crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs:286.
Federated server URLs come from the portal's answer (low confidence). Each one gets the bearer token with no relation check against the portal. The portal issued the token, so it is already trusted. A compromised or misconfigured portal could still name an unrelated host. Inline comment at crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs:329.
Local callback server (informational). Connections are handled one at a time with a 2 s read timeout, so a local process could stall the sign-in briefly. The state check prevents any real abuse.
Performance
cache::clear() empties the whole tile cache on every sign-in, sign-out and token adoption, including tiles unrelated to ArcGIS. Clearing only entries under the affected scopes would avoid re-fetching basemaps (low impact).
Quality
The web request() helper in apps/rustgis-web/src/arcgis.rs checks the 4 MB cap only after reading the whole body, and ignores the HTTP status. Inline comment at line 140 (nit).
An expired token session that matches covering still shadows a less specific session that has a valid token. In practice authorization returns None until a renewal lands. This is an edge case.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, and wasm is gated with cfg. New UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. The token key is covered by holds_secret, so arcgis.token isn't recorded into saved tasks. The new commands appear in the network list. The hostile-params test gets a regression exemption, but see the flake above. I did not verify the ATTRIBUTION.md row for oauth-callback.html. cargo xtask notices should be rerun for the new base64 and getrandom dependencies in rustgis-tiles if it hasn't been.

ArcGIS's query endpoints answer a CORS preflight with HTTP 400, so a
request with the X-Esri-Authorization header can't be sent from a web
page (the service document worked, its feature query didn't). The web
fetcher adds the token as the request's token parameter instead, as
ArcGIS's own JavaScript API does: a plain GET needs no preflight. Only
the request carries it; the address kept and named in messages has
none. The desktop keeps the header.
I read the full diff and the new arcgis_auth module, which covers OAuth with PKCE, token scoping, renewal and the loopback callback server. I also read the browser pop-up flow, the commands, the UI, the fetcher hooks and the tests. I found no crash or security defects. The scoping, state and PKCE checks, no-redirect handling and token redaction all look sound. I did not build or run anything.
Bugs
Likely flaky engine test (medium confidence).hostile_params_never_panic calls arcgis.signOut with {} or Null, which clears every session in the process-wide store. That can race the new an_arcgis_token_in_a_service_address_reaches_its_layers test in the same binary. (crates/engine/src/cmd/arcgis.rs:99)
Browser renewal can end a session on a transient server error (medium). The browser request() never checks the HTTP status. A 502 with an HTML body is read as "token answer isn't JSON". renewal_done treats that as a refusal and removes the session. The desktop treats the same case as unreachable and only retries later. (apps/rustgis-web/src/arcgis.rs:154)
signed_in can return the wrong session (low).signed_in(&p.portal) matches only on the portal string, not the session kind. A token session for the same portal root could be reported instead of the sign-in. (crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs:964)
Security
Nothing blocking.
The browser build puts the token in the request URL's token parameter. Server logs and devtools can therefore see it. The PR explains this is needed because ArcGIS's query endpoints reject the header's CORS preflight, so I treated it as a known trade-off (low).
Performance
authorization_fresh does a blocking renewal POST (up to 30 s) while holding a global mutex. Other tile workers wait for it. This is acceptable because renewal is infrequent (low).
Quality
The without_token doc comment says the token goes "in a header", but in the browser it goes as a query parameter (nit). (crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs:51)
AGENTS.md
No unwrap or panic in non-test code, and the new code builds for wasm behind cfg. arcgis.signIn is added to NETWORK, and interface strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
The new dependencies (base64 and getrandom) were already in the lockfile. Please confirm cargo xtask notices was run.

- Drop the unused refused_hint in tiles: the 498/499 wording lives in
the data crate's error alone.
- The callback server gives each request five seconds in all, so a
client trickling bytes can't hold it past the deadline or a cancel.
- A refresh refused with HTTP 400 is read as the OAuth error it is
and ends the session; a 5xx or a non-JSON answer (a proxy's page)
counts as the portal not being reached and keeps it, on the desktop
and in the browser.
- hostile_params_never_panic skips arcgis.signOut, which signs out the
process's sessions other tests use; a non-string portal is now an
error instead of "every session" (tested).
- A path with dot segments gets no token.
- The browser's portal requests time out after 30 s, check the status
and Content-Length, and the renewal flag is cleared by a drop guard.
- Document that the browser's token travels in the request URL.
- signed_in matches sign-ins, not tokens given for the same root.
- service.rs doc: "as the request's credential", not "in a header".
I read the diff and the core of crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs: the browser PKCE flow, server_root, with_token, adopt_url_token, renewal_due and renewal_done. I did not read the rest of arcgis_auth.rs (the desktop callback server, Pending), crates/ui-egui/src/arcgisui.rs, or the test bodies, and nothing was built or run. The design is careful. The OAuth state is compared and must appear exactly once, PKCE is used, redirects are refused, cookies are omitted, and answer sizes and timeouts are bounded. Tokens are kept in memory only and kept out of layer addresses. The PR has no hard bugs I could confirm. The two concerns below are small.
One caveat on the inline comments: the first sleep comment landed on the wrong lines of apps/rustgis-web/src/arcgis.rs (about lines 113–120, inside request()). I used diff line numbers instead of file line numbers. The corrected comment is at lines 49–56. Please ignore the one at 113–120.
Bugs
Discovery request may be blocked by CORS (medium-low). In apps/rustgis-web/src/arcgis.rs:165, the portal-discovery request sends the token in the custom X-Esri-Authorization header. web.rs avoids that header in the browser because ArcGIS answers its preflight with an error. If that happens here, .ok() hides it. The session then falls back to the portal host's own scopes, and the org's other servers aren't covered. Pass the token as a query parameter, or log the failure.
sleep can hang (low). In apps/rustgis-web/src/arcgis.rs:49, if there is no window or set_timeout fails, the promise never resolves. finish then never returns, and SIGNING_IN stays set until reload.
Security
Nothing to raise. The token travels in the URL query in the browser, which is a trade-off the code documents. The cache and messages use the address without the token, and fetch_bytes refuses redirects when a token is attached.
Performance
Nothing to raise. The 4 MB answer cap and 30-second request timeout are in place.
Quality
Stale comments (low). The docs on adopt_url_token (crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs:445) and the new engine test say the token goes "in a header". The browser path uses a token query parameter. with_token also doesn't check whether the URL already has a token parameter, so it could be duplicated.
Placement inconsistency (nit).arcgis.signIn sits under "Home › Add › Service" and always errors on web, while arcgis.status and arcgis.cancelSignIn are no-ops there. This is fine if the UI hides them.
AGENTS.md
Never-crash: the new code has no unwrap/expect/panic. The two unsafe-free browser paths use ? and unwrap_or.
hostile_params_never_panic is adjusted for the commands that would start a server or sign everyone out, and a separate regression test covers their junk input.
User-visible strings in ogc.rs and the new commands are plain English and not wrapped in tl!, which is the command/CLI exception. Please confirm the UI text in arcgisui.rs uses tl!; I didn't read that file.
Cargo.lock shows new base64 and getrandom dependencies for the tiles crate. Please confirm cargo xtask notices was run and the licences pass cargo deny.

For an Enterprise portal the scope is the portal's whole origin with path /, so the bearer token is attached to every request to that host, including non-ArcGIS applications behind the same web adaptor or reverse proxy (e.g. https://gis.example.org/other-app/…). Narrowing this to the portal's own path (/portal/) plus the discovered federated servers would follow least privilege more closely. The comment says this is intentional for federated servers behind one web adaptor, so this is a design concern rather than a defect. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Same design point as the earlier thread on Enterprise scope: kept as the portal's whole host on purpose, because the portal, its hosting server and federated servers commonly share one host behind web adaptors, and the docs state it. Leaving open for the maintainer to decide whether to narrow it.
I read the diff and the core of crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs. I did not read the ui-egui changes, the remaining tests or the docs. I could not build or run anything here.
Bugs
None confirmed in the parts I read: sign-in state, PKCE state check, scope matching, renewal and the pop-up loop.
Security
Token in the URL on the web (medium). In the browser, with_token appends the token as a token= query parameter (apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs). The reason given is ArcGIS's CORS preflight on query endpoints. The token can then appear in network logs and proxy or server access logs. Please check that no later error path formats the tokened request instead of url. Also consider set_referrer_policy(NoReferrer) and set_credentials(Omit) on this path, as arcgis.rs::request does. Redirects are already blocked.
Enterprise scope is the whole portal host (low-medium).scopes_for covers the portal's origin with path / (arcgis_auth.rs:321), so the bearer token goes to every request to that host, including unrelated apps behind the same web adaptor. This looks intentional, for federated servers. Narrowing to the portal path plus the discovered servers would follow least privilege more closely.
The good parts: PKCE, a single state parameter that must match, no redirects, no cookies, bounded responses and request timeouts, and dot-segment paths getting no token.
Quality
Docs say "header" where the web uses a query parameter (medium). The doc comments on adopt_url_token (arcgis_auth.rs) and without_token (crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs) say the token is sent "in a header". On the web it is a query parameter.
One renewal at a time (low). The global RENEWING flag skips renewals for other portals while one is in flight. This is harmless because the existing token stays valid for about a minute.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap/expect/panic in the non-test code I read, and the wasm-only module is gated behind cfg(target_arch = "wasm32").
The new ui.* strings should be wrapped in tl!. I didn't verify that in arcgisui.rs.
Cargo.lock gains base64 and getrandom. Check that cargo xtask notices and cargo deny were run, since the PR touches dependencies.
The hostile-params test skips arcgis.signIn and arcgis.signOut and points to a dedicated test for their junk handling. That is reasonable.
Change size
The whole PR against main (merge base 624c5e7 to PR head a846b39).
- The browser's discovery request sends the token as its parameter,
like the fetcher, and logs a failure instead of hiding it.
- with_token leaves an address that has a token parameter of its own
alone instead of adding a second one.
- Authorized browser fetches send no referrer and no cookies.
- Doc comments say which transport applies where.
I reviewed the ArcGIS sign-in PR for security, correctness and the repo guidelines, and found nothing serious. I did not read arcgisui.rs, crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth/tests.rs, the docs, or arcgis_auth.rs past line 700. That excludes the desktop callback server, the revocation code and the rest of the session store.
The design is careful on token handling:
A token is sent only to the origin and path its session covers.
Dot segments in a path, including %2e, get no token.
Redirects are refused, and the browser requests omit cookies and the referrer.
Tokens are kept in memory only and are left out of Debug output.
Sign-in uses PKCE S256, and the browser callback must carry exactly one state that matches.
Bugs
Busy loop if no timer can be set (low-medium confidence). sleep in apps/rustgis-web/src/arcgis.rs resolves at once when set_timeout fails. The polling loop in finish then spins until the 5-minute deadline. It is bounded, but it would block the main thread. Inline comment posted.
Token expiry in the browser (low confidence). web.rs renews a token only just before a fetch, and with_token returns None once the token has expired. If a renewal is slow or fails, requests go out unauthenticated and ArcGIS answers 499 (the 499 hint in ogc.rs then points the user to sign in again). This looks acceptable, but it is worth a test. I couldn't attach an inline comment to this spot in web.rs.
Security
Token in the query string in the browser (informational). The token goes in the URL, so it can appear in the portal's and any proxy's logs. The PR documents this, and it is needed because ArcGIS answers the header's CORS preflight with an error.
Error messages must not carry the tokenised URL (low confidence). The cache and the messages use the token-less url, as intended. The Failed to fetch path in fetch_bytes should be checked to confirm it never uses request.
Performance
Nothing significant. renew_if_due takes the session mutex on every fetch. That is cheap.
Quality
split() in crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs indexes a string with &rest[..i]. It can't panic, because i comes from find. split_once('/') would avoid indexing. Nit, inline comment posted.
In apps/rustgis-web/src/arcgis.rs, Closure::once_into_js for the abort timer leaks a small closure when the timer is cleared before it fires. Nit.
AGENTS.md
Crash safety: the new code uses no unwrap, expect or panic, and hostile_params_never_panic skips arcgis.signIn and arcgis.signOut. The PR notes these are covered by other tests, which I did not check.
Wasm and layering: the browser code is gated by cfg(target_arch = "wasm32"), and web_time is used. I did not run cargo xtask layers.
Dependencies: the PR adds base64 and getrandom to the tiles crate. The licence check and cargo xtask notices should be confirmed (THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt was not in the changed files).
Assets:DEFAULT_CLIENT_ID is a public OAuth client id, which is fine.

redirect() drops the last path segment unconditionally. If the app is served at a path with no trailing slash and no file name (e.g. https://host/app), pathname is /app, so dir is "" and the redirect becomes https://host/oauth-callback.html, which is outside the app's directory. The portal then rejects it because it isn't a registered redirect URL, or the callback page 404s. The …/index.html and …/ cases work. Low confidence this is hit in practice: it only matters for deployments under a sub-path without a trailing slash. Consider treating a final segment without a . as a directory.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The callback server handles one connection at a time on a single thread, and a connection can hold it for up to 5 s (request_target) plus the 2 s read and write timeouts. Any local process or web page that opens connections to 127.0.0.1:7290 and sends nothing can stall the real browser callback, or push it past the 5-minute window. The state check keeps this from being an auth bypass; it is only a nuisance DoS, so low severity. Handling each accepted stream with a short deadline, or rejecting early on a missing request line, would limit it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
When 64 sessions are reached, all.remove(0) silently drops the oldest session. For a sign-in this also leaves its refresh token valid on the portal, because nothing is revoked. This is unlikely with realistic use (the cap is high), so low priority. Returning an error or revoking the evicted session would be cleaner.
I read the ArcGIS auth core (crates/tiles/src/arcgis_auth.rs), the browser flow, the engine commands, the fetch_bytes changes and the egui UI. I did not read the 15 KB arcgis_auth/tests.rs, the docs/user-guide/data-formats.md additions or the small edits to cache.rs, dialogs.rs and lib.rs. I found no serious defects. The design is careful: PKCE S256, a state check, no redirects, token scopes that reject dot segments, and tokens kept in memory only and kept out of Debug output.
Bugs
Low (about 35%):redirect() in apps/rustgis-web/src/arcgis.rs builds the wrong callback URL when the app is served at a sub-path with no trailing slash (e.g. /app). The result is /oauth-callback.html at the site root, which is not a registered redirect URL. This is an inline comment.
Low (about 30%):keep() silently evicts the oldest session at the 64-session cap, and it does not revoke that session's refresh token. This is an inline comment.
Security
Low (about 50%): the desktop callback server handles connections one at a time. A local client that connects and stays silent can hold it for up to 5 s per connection, which can delay or break the real callback. The state check keeps this from being an auth bypass, so it is a nuisance rather than a vulnerability. This is an inline comment.
Informational: in the browser the token goes in the request URL's token parameter, so portal and proxy logs may keep it. The PR documents this and mitigates it with no-referrer, omitted credentials and redirects that error. The reasoning (ArcGIS's CORS preflight refuses the header) is sound.
Quality
The arcgis_auth.rs module doc (lines 11-13) is hard to read: a parenthetical about the browser's token parameter splits the sentence.
hostile_params_never_panic skips arcgis.signOut because it clears a process-global store that other tests use. The PR covers it with a separate test. Skipping it is a pragmatic choice, but it leaves a gap in the AGENTS.md rule that every command is run with junk parameters. Running the command with a junk portal, which is rejected before it can sign anything out, would keep the coverage.
without_token in service.rs detects token in the query without first stripping a #fragment. This is an edge case and harmless.
