test(analysis): check overlay, selection and join tools against GEOS - #916
Adds a reference test for the analysis tools: it runs them on small made-up layers and compares their results with the answers GEOS (the geometry engine of QGIS and PostGIS) gives for the same layers.
crates/analysis/tests/reference/generate.py writes the layers and the expected results (uv run generate.py; Shapely 2.1.2, GEOS 3.13.1, pyproj 3.7.2). The layers are built around the cases engines tend to disagree on: points exactly on shared edges, corners and hole boundaries, a polygon with a hole, a two-part polygon, a clockwise ring, polygons that only touch along an edge or at a corner, and a road running along a shared boundary.
crates/analysis/tests/reference.rs runs the tools on them and reports every difference together, in terms like P1: point_count 1, the reference 3.
21 cases cover Clip (polygons, lines, points), Erase, Dissolve (by field and all), Minimum Bounding Geometry (each and all), Select Layer By Location (including inverted), Summarize Within, and Spatial Join (Intersects, Contains, Within, Closest, Within a distance).
How it compares:
Overlays and predicates are worked out in Web Mercator, the plane the tools use, so the test checks the geometry engine rather than the choice of plane. Polygons must share all but 0.1 ppm of their area. Vertex positions aren't compared, because GEOS keeps vertices partway along straight edges that geo drops.
Distances in the reference are on the WGS 84 ellipsoid, as Spatial Join measures them since Analysis: buffers, Tissot's circles and Spatial Join distances on the WGS 84 ellipsoid (#888) #905: GeographicLib (through pyproj) for point to point, and for an edge the nearest point of the geodesic between its vertices, found by searching along it; the script checks each against dense sampling. Spatial Join finds nearest points in an azimuthal equidistant plane, so the tolerance is 1e-4; the largest difference observed is 1.3e-5 (8.6 cm over 6.7 km).
All 21 cases pass on current main. The first CI run caught #905's change from the sphere to the ellipsoid (distances up to 0.3 % apart); the reference now measures on the ellipsoid too. The layers are plain GeoJSON, so they can be opened in RustGIS or QGIS to see each case.
GEOS, Shapely and pyproj run only when the expected results are regenerated; none is a dependency or is included in anything RustGIS builds. ATTRIBUTION.md has a row for the corpus, following the QGIS test corpus. The test's header asks that a failing case be fixed with RustGIS's own code rather than by porting GEOS (LGPL-2.1).
Not covered yet: Buffer (now on the ellipsoid, #905) and Calculate Geometry (lengths and areas still on the sphere, #894); they can follow once #894 settles.
Testing
cargo xtask ci
cargo test -p rustgis-analysis --test reference: 21 of 21 cases agree.
Checked that the test catches a real bug: with Summarize Within changed to skip points on polygon edges (contains in place of intersects), it fails with P1: point_count Some("1"), the reference Some("3") and three similar lines.
Related issue
Related to #888 and #894 (measurement on the ellipsoid; #905 moved Spatial Join distances there, and this checks them).
Added reference checks for spatial analysis operations, including clipping, erasing, dissolving, convex hulls, location selection, point counting, and spatial joins.
Added sample geographic data and expected results to validate output geometries, feature details, and join results, including distance-based matches.
Documentation
Documented the reference data attribution and the tools used to prepare expected results.
A reference test runs the analysis tools on small made-up layers and
compares their results with what GEOS (the engine of QGIS and PostGIS)
gives for them: 21 cases across Clip, Erase, Dissolve, Minimum Bounding
Geometry, Select Layer By Location, Summarize Within and Spatial Join.
The layers put points on shared edges, corners and hole boundaries, and
polygons that only touch, where engines tend to disagree.
generate.py writes the layers and the expected results; GEOS runs only
then and is no dependency of RustGIS.

Summary
Reference inputs and generation crates/analysis/tests/reference/layers/*.geojson, crates/analysis/tests/reference/generate.py, ATTRIBUTION.md
Adds five GeoJSON input layers and a script that generates expected outputs and case metadata. The script uses Shapely and GEOS for overlay results, and pyproj and PROJ for geodesic distance calculations. Attribution identifies the sources and licences and states that the tools are not included in or linked into RustGIS.
Generated cases and expected outputs crates/analysis/tests/reference/cases.json, crates/analysis/tests/reference/expected/*.geojson
Adds expected results for clipping, erasing, dissolving, convex hulls, location selection, point counts, and spatial joins, including distance-limited joins and unmatched pairs.
Reference test harness crates/analysis/tests/reference.rs
Adds checks for output geometries, IDs, field values, and join pairs. The test aggregates differences and applies geometry and distance tolerances.
opengeos/RustGIS#748: Adds trusted reference tests for several analysis workflows, covering part of the broader request to compare existing workflows with trusted results.
opengeos/RustGIS#851: Adds Spatial Join reference cases for predicate, closest-match, and distance-limited behaviors, but does not implement the broader feature set.

Explanation
The title "test(analysis): check overlay, selection and join tools against GEOS" matches the main change. The PR adds a reference test that runs the analysis tools on small layers and compares their results with GEOS output. It is specific and follows a conventional-commit style. It does not mention the ellipsoid distance reference or the generator script, but it does not need to cover every detail.

This PR adds a test that compares the analysis tools with GEOS reference results. I read crates/analysis/tests/reference.rs in full. I did not read the Python generator, cases.json or the GeoJSON fixtures, so the data and the generation script are unreviewed. I found no blocking problems. The notes below are low-confidence and all concern test code. I posted no inline comments.
Bugs
Geometry kind (low confidence):compare_geometry chooses the polygon or line comparison only from the expected geometry (reference.rs:93). If the reference result is empty or has no polygons, for example an Erase that removes everything, the line branch runs. Any polygons the tool wrongly returns are then ignored, because lines() filters them out. Checking the output's geometry kind, or asserting that the output is empty when the reference is empty, would close the gap.
Counts without a key (low confidence): when a case sets "key": null and also gives counts (reference.rs:141-148), every row's key becomes "". The lookup in counts then fails and reports a false mismatch. This can only happen if such a case is added later. The current cases are presumably fine, since all 21 pass.
Silent skip (low confidence): the got.get(k) / want comparison skips any feature that has no geometry. A tool that returns an empty geometry for a key the reference expects as a polygon is only caught through the area check. That check does catch it, since xor against the full polygon is large.
Security
Nothing to raise. The test only reads fixtures from the repository.
Performance
Nothing to raise. The corpus is small, and the xor and Hausdorff computations are on tiny layers.
Quality
Direct indexing (nit):layers.0[&layer] at reference.rs:154 panics if the tool returns a selection on an unknown layer. In a test the panic still fails the run, but it aborts the report that is meant to list every difference together. Using .get() and pushing a problem string would keep that promise.
Panics in the test (nit): the unwrap() calls at reference.rs:225 and :233 and the panic! calls in read_layer are fine in test code. They give less helpful messages than expect with the file name would.
Overlapping tolerance (nit):DISTANCE_TOLERANCE * wd + 1e-3 is a sensible mixed relative and absolute tolerance. The else if gd.is_some() != wd.is_some() branch (lines 209-211) is easy to misread, though. A short comment, or a separate check made before the tolerance check, would make it clearer.
Reproducibility (nit): the expected results are generated by an external script (uv run generate.py) that uses pinned Shapely and GEOS versions. A CI check that regenerating gives identical output would catch drift between cases.json and the generator. This is optional.
AGENTS.md
Licensing and attribution: the PR adds an ATTRIBUTION.md row for the corpus, and the test header says not to port GEOS code (LGPL-2.1). That follows the "no third-party code" rule. Confidence: high.
Never crash: the rule against unwrap() and panic! applies to non-test code, so the integration test is exempt. I could not run cargo xtask ci here. The PR states that it passes.
Wasm and layering: the new code is tests and data only, so wasm and layering are unaffected.

opengeos#905 moved Spatial Join distances to the WGS 84 ellipsoid, and the first
CI run caught it: distances up to 0.3 % from the spherical reference. The
reference now measures with GeographicLib (pyproj): point to point
directly, and to an edge as the nearest point of its geodesic, found by
searching along it and checked against dense sampling.
Review follow-ups: Summarize Within's features are compared once each
(missing, extra or repeated ones fail); an output with another kind of
geometry than the reference fails; dissolve counts without a key match
by_key; a selection in an unknown layer is reported, not a panic; the
distance checks are a single match.

Thanks for the review. Changes are in e726a5b (cargo xtask ci passes):
Geometry kind:compare_geometry now fails when the output has a different kind of geometry from the reference, so polygons where the reference expects lines, or the other way round, no longer slip through.
Counts without a key: fixed. Count rows now take the same key by_key gives, which is all when the case has no key.
Silent skip: as you say, the area comparison catches a missing geometry. The new kind check also covers an output that has no geometry of the reference's kind.
Direct indexing: a selection in a layer that isn't one of the reference layers is now reported as a difference instead of panicking.
Panic messages: reading cases.json names the file when it fails.
Distance checks: rewritten as a single match, with a comment on the case where one side has a distance and the other doesn't.
Regeneration check in CI: not added. It would need Python and a package download in CI just to confirm that committed files match a deterministic script. cases.json records the Shapely, GEOS, pyproj and PROJ versions it was written with. Happy to add it if the maintainers want it.
Separately, the first CI run failed on Spatial Join distances because #905 merged meanwhile and moved them to the WGS 84 ellipsoid. The reference now measures distances with GeographicLib (through pyproj): to an edge, as the nearest point of the geodesic between its vertices, checked against dense sampling. All 21 cases agree on current main.
I read the test harness, cases.json and the generator's header. I did not read the expected-result GeoJSON files. I found no bugs, security problems or performance problems. The unwrap/expect/panic! ban applies to non-test code, so the panics in reference.rs are allowed. Nothing in the diff affects the wasm build or the layer boundaries.
Bugs
None found.
check compares expected and actual results in several ways: features by key, ids, per-feature values, and join pairs with distances.
It reports a missing, extra or repeated feature for each of them, and compare_geometry first requires the same geometry kinds.
The empty-output cases (g.0.is_empty() against a non-empty reference) are handled.
Security
None. The corpus is made-up data, and the test reads only files under CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR.
Performance
None. The layers are tiny.
Quality
PR description is out of date (high confidence). It says reference distances are computed "along great circles on the 6,371,008.8 m sphere". generate.py (Geod(ellps="WGS84")), the reference.rs comments and the ATTRIBUTION.md row all use the WGS 84 ellipsoid via GeographicLib. The last commit message says the same ("measure reference distances on WGS 84"). Please correct the description so it matches the code.
Hard-to-follow key handling (low confidence, nit). In check, key is Option<&str>, but the expected layer is always keyed by "id" through key.map(|_| "id"). That reads as an indirect way of saying "no key means a single group". A short comment, or an explicit match, would help.
Distance tolerance (low confidence). The tolerance is 1e-4 of the distance, and the largest observed difference is 1.3e-5. That leaves about 8× headroom, so a regression in the join's distance accuracy of up to roughly 8× would go unnoticed. This is acceptable for now, since it matches the tolerance in join.rs. You could tighten it to about 3e-5 later.
AGENTS.md
Attribution:ATTRIBUTION.md has a row for the new corpus, as required for asset files. It states the GEOS, Shapely and PROJ licences and that none is linked into RustGIS. The test header also warns against porting LGPL code.
Gates: I could not run cargo xtask ci here. The PR says it passed.
Dependencies:geo, serde_json and the other crates the test imports must already be dev-dependencies or dependencies of rustgis-analysis. The diff touches no Cargo.toml, so the test compiling depends on that. CI will confirm it.
