fix(analysis): calculate geometry attributes on the WGS 84 ellipsoid - #928
Calculate Geometry used the mean-radius sphere for area, perimeter and length, producing the reported 0.26% area discrepancy in northern Italy. Measure these attributes on the WGS 84 ellipsoid with the existing geo::Geodesic and GeodesicArea APIs, directly on longitude/latitude coordinates.
For polygons, normalize ring winding in continuous longitude space and use unsigned geodesic area, subtracting holes and summing multipart geometry. This preserves non-polar regions larger than half the Earth while keeping reversed local rings and small dateline crossings small. Pole-winding rings retain the smaller-cap interpretation for either input winding; reversing a ring does not select its global complement. This convention is stated in the guide. Preserve the existing field names/units, geometry, attributes and in-place update/undo behavior. The guide now distinguishes Calculate Geometry from Spatial Join's still-spherical largest-overlap area.
This fix is focused on Calculate Geometry. The shared spherical helpers and their planetary/measurement callers keep their existing behavior. No dependency, parameter or project-format changes.
Testing
New polygon and line regressions failed before the fix; both and the existing small-value precision regression passed after it.
Independent reference values generated with PROJ / pyproj 3.7.2 Geod(ellps="WGS84"), checked to 1 m² for area and 1 mm for length/perimeter. Cases cover the equator, 46.5°N, 60°N, holes, multipart geometry, either winding and the antimeridian; line cases include an equatorial arc, a meridian arc and a dateline crossing.
A large-region regression failed before the review fix: a band with a hole returned 74,740,935.833 km² instead of 435,300,068.334 km². GeographicLib 2.1 reference values now cover that region, either winding, hole perimeters, north/south polar caps and dateline crossings, with geometry preservation checks.
Non-finite and out-of-range coordinates bypass planar orientation; a regression checks that these inputs return without a panic.
Engine regression checks one-step undo/redo, geometry and attribute preservation.
Line lengths and polygon areas and perimeters are measured on the WGS 84 ellipsoid, independent of map projection, with edges following shortest geodesics.
Polygon holes are subtracted regardless of ring orientation, and measurements are summed across multipart geometries. Large regions and antimeridian crossings are measured consistently; point coordinates are unchanged.
Geometry calculations remain undoable and redoable.

Walkthrough
Calculate Geometry now measures polygon areas and perimeters and line lengths on the WGS 84 ellipsoid. Tests cover reference measurements, ring orientations, antimeridian-crossing geometries, polar regions, and undo/redo. The user guide distinguishes these measurements from Spatial Join’s spherical Largest overlap calculation.
Polygon ring areas and perimeters and polyline lengths now use geo geodesic operations. Tests cover WGS 84 reference values, ring orientations, large and polar regions, antimeridian crossings, and invalid coordinates.
Validate and document geometry results crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
An engine test checks calculated length, geometry and attribute preservation, and undo/redo. The user guide describes ellipsoidal measurements and clarifies that Spatial Join’s Largest overlap remains spherical.
Issue 810 reports oversized area results for antimeridian-crossing rings. This change updates polygon area calculations and includes tests for antimeridian-crossing polygons; the reported case is not independently verified here.

What I checked
Correctness of the swap:calculate_geometry now uses geo's Geodesic, GeodesicArea::geodesic_perimeter_area_signed and Length (WGS 84) instead of the spherical helpers.
Taking .abs() of each ring's signed area and subtracting hole rings makes the result independent of ring winding. The test covers both windings.
geo::Polygon::new closes unclosed rings, so open input rings are handled.
Rings are built one at a time with no interior rings, so the hole logic stays in the existing loop.
Never crash: the changed lines have no unwrap, indexing or panics outside tests. Degenerate rings, NaN coordinates and out-of-range latitudes make the geodesic routines return NaN or zero rather than panic. The existing hostile_params_never_panic tests still cover this tool.
Antimeridian: the new tests cover rings and lines that cross ±180°, which the geo geodesic code handles.
Dependencies and wasm: the geo = "0.33" workspace dependency was already there, so no new dependency or licence change. The geo geodesic code is pure Rust and should build for wasm.
Leftover users of the old helpers:geodesic_length_m and geodesic_ring_area_m2 are still used in join.rs and geodesic.rs, so removing the import from tools.rs leaves no dead code. The docs correctly say that Spatial Join's Largest overlap stays spherical.
Tests: there are new unit tests with PROJ/pyproj reference values at several latitudes and across the antimeridian. An engine test checks that gp.run undoes and redoes in one step, and that the geometry and other attributes are unchanged.
Quality (minor, low confidence)
The area and perimeter use geo::Polygon::new(line(r), vec![]), which allocates a LineString and a Polygon for every ring. Calling geodesic_perimeter_area_signed on the polygon is fine for correctness. For very large datasets, a ring-level call could avoid the extra allocation, but I wouldn't hold the PR for this. (confidence: low)
The line closure at the top of calculate_geometry is used by both branches, which is fine. A short comment saying the perimeter includes hole rings, as it did before, would help future readers. (confidence: low)

I read the full diff (calculate_geometry in crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, the new tests, the engine undo test and the docs). I did not build the code or run the tests. I found no blocking problems, so I posted no inline comments.
Bugs
None found. I looked at these cases:
Longitude unwrapping: it carries the longitude forward, so small antimeridian crossings stay small. NaN or infinite input turns every later longitude into NaN, and the orientable guard then routes the ring to the signed path. The "does not orient invalid coordinates" test covers NaN, infinity and latitude 100.
Closing the ring:ring.close() is safe for empty and short rings.
Polar rings: the check compares the first and last longitude after unwrapping, so it only fires when the ring winds around a pole. Those rings take the signed absolute value, the smaller polar region, as the docs describe.
Holes: ring 0 is added and later rings are subtracted, with each ring oriented on its own. That makes the result independent of winding, and the reversed-ring tests check it.
Lines:Geodesic.length on a line crossing the dateline takes the shortest geodesic, which the test checks.
Confidence: moderate. I reasoned from the code and did not run it.
Security
None. All parameters and geometry are handled without unwrap, indexing or panics, which fits the "never crash" rule.
Performance
Each ring is copied into a geo::LineString (and line(p) does the same for every line part). That is O(n) per feature and fine. Confidence: high that it doesn't matter.
Quality
The per-ring block inside calculate_geometry (unwrap, polar check, orientation, fallback) is dense and nested four levels deep. Moving it into a helper such as ring_geodesic_area_perimeter(&[Coord]) -> (f64, f64) would make it easier to read and test on its own. This is a nit. Confidence: medium.
The rustgis_geom::{geodesic_length_m, geodesic_ring_area_m2} imports were removed here. Spatial Join's Largest overlap still uses a spherical area, and the docs say so. Two area methods now live side by side, so a follow-up to unify them would help. Confidence: low.
The tests hardcode many reference values from PROJ and GeographicLib, with source comments. That is good, but the comment for the "large" case combines two numbers inline (435312377.1122553 - 12308.778…). A short note on which number is the hole would help readers. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code. Tests are the only place they appear.
A regression test covers the hostile-coordinate case, and an engine undo/redo test covers the command path.
The user guide was updated. The change touches no UI strings, no wasm-specific code and no new dependencies, as far as I could see. I did not check whether geo already has the Geodesic and GeodesicArea APIs enabled for the wasm build. CI's wasm build will confirm.
