Analysis: measure on the WGS 84 ellipsoid in Calculate Geometry, the Measure tools and the network - #957
Fixes#939. After #905 (buffers, Tissot's circles, Spatial Join distances on WGS 84) and #928 (the geoprocessing Calculate Geometry on WGS 84), three measurement paths still ran on the mean sphere (R = 6,371,008.8 m), so the same feature measured about 0.26 % differently depending on the path taken — the exact gap #894 measured for Italian municipalities:
The attribute table's edit.calculateGeometry (crates/engine/src/geometry_calc.rs) now measures areas, perimeters and lengths on the WGS 84 ellipsoid, so the attribute table and the geoprocessing tool return the same numbers;
The measure tool (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs) measures on the ellipsoid on the Earth. On the Moon, Mars or another body it keeps measuring on that body's sphere and scaling, as Body::length/Body::area did;
The network tools (crates/analysis/src/network.rs) measure every edge length, snap distance and route length with the WGS 84 inverse solution.
wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2(ring) -> (f64, f64): GeographicLib's PolygonArea in one accumulation — the ring closes along a geodesic to its first point (so the attribute table's perimeter special case of the closing edge disappears), with the winding-agnostic convention compute(sign = true) whose magnitude is the enclosed area for a ring traced either way. This was cross-checked against geo's independent GeodesicArea implementation on clockwise, counter-clockwise and antimeridian-crossing rings. Both functions stop at non-finite coordinates with NaN, as haversine_m now does ([Bug]: A NaN coordinate measures as 20,015,114 m — a quarter of the Earth's circumference — instead of being refused #937).
Earth-only switch in the measure tool.Body::length and Body::area scale sphere measurements by the body's mean radius (documented so in body.rs); a Moon measure scaled to a body's radius is what the body tests assert, so only the Earth takes the ellipsoid.
The sphere functions stay for whatever still serves a sphere-on-purpose caller (spherical_centre, body-relative scaling, derived helpers); they are no longer used by the three paths above.
Docs:docs/user-guide/analysis.md (one measure behind Calculate Geometry, the Measure tools and the network lengths), docs/user-guide/editing.md and docs/user-guide/data.md (attribute-table Calculate Geometry on the ellipsoid).
Testing
rustgis-geom: wgs84_measures_match_geographiclib — the equator 1° × 1° box (perimeter 443,770.917 m, area 12,308,778,361.469 m²), the reversed ring, the unwrapped antimeridian box (perimeter 666,393.055 m, area 24,619,443,759.277 m²), a 3-segment equator length (3 × 111,319.4908 m), 179°E → 179°W measured folded (222,638.9816 m), NaN coordinates giving NaN, and the degenerate ring keeping its zero. All values from GeographicLib, cross-checked with geo.
rustgis-engine: the new areas_are_on_the_wgs84_ellipsoid runs edit.calculateGeometry on that box and compares against the same hard-coded references; polygon_holes_multipart_and_area_units now builds its expectation through wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2; the existing tests (units, overwrite and undo, antimeridian polygons, longitude bounds) pass unchanged — the 2° equator line measures 222.639 km, inside the old 222–223 range.
rustgis-analysis: the network tests pass without edits — route_ends_snap_onto_long_segments measures 3,339.36 m against its old 3,336 ± 20 bound, and the radius_distance_m helpers keep their own local metric.
Geometry, map measurement, and network-route measurements on Earth now use distances and areas measured against the WGS 84 ellipsoid. Measurements on the Moon and other bodies continue to use body-scaled calculations.
Non-finite values in distance, area, and coordinate readouts now display as an en dash.
Documentation
Updated guidance to describe measurement methods and note that Spatial Join’s Largest overlap uses a spherical area calculation that may differ from WGS 84 results.
…t as an em dash
A single NaN or infinite vertex used to measure as 20,015,114.442 m -- a quarter
of the Earth's circumference -- because haversine_m's h.sqrt().min(1.0) fell into
f64::min's NaN rule and turned the broken haversine h into asin(1). The measure
tool, the attribute table's Calculate Geometry and the network tools sit under
it, and WKB-based files can carry such vertices, so a corrupt file measured
silently plausible lengths.
Now a non-finite endpoint keeps the haversine result NaN: sums and panels stay
visibly broken and comparisons (NaN <= r) exclude the point, while finite edges
next to a broken one keep measuring. The formatters format_distance,
format_area, format_lonlat and format_dms show an em dash for non-finite values,
never "NaN km" or "NaN deg", as the router's formatter already avoided.

…d geodesic
The attribute table's Calculate Geometry (edit.calculateGeometry), the map's
Measure tools on the Earth and the network tools' edge and route lengths still
measured on the mean sphere (R = 6,371,008.8 m), after opengeos#905 and opengeos#928 made the
buffers, joins and the geoprocessing Calculate Geometry ellipsoidal. The same
polygon then returned two areas about 0.26 % apart depending on which
Calculate Geometry ran (opengeos#939).
rustgis-geom gains wgs84_length_m (inverse geodesic solves, one per segment)
and wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 (GeographicLib's PolygonArea, the ring closed
along a geodesic, unsigned in either winding), both stopping at non-finite
coordinates as haversine_m now does. The three paths above use them; on the
Moon or Mars the Measure tools keep measuring on that body's sphere and scale,
as before. Network tests keep passing without changes to their tolerances.

WGS 84 ellipsoidal measurements are now used by geometry calculations, network routing, and Earth map measurement tools. New geometry helpers handle ring perimeter and area calculations. Non-finite measurement values and coordinates receive explicit handling.
Changes: Earth Measurement Calculations
Layer / File(s)
Summary
WGS 84 measurement helpers crates/geom/src/lib.rs
Adds WGS 84 length and ring perimeter/area helpers. Non-finite inputs produce NaN, and non-finite values display as an en dash. Tests cover reference measurements, edge cases, and formatting.
Geometry calculation and routing crates/engine/src/geometry_calc.rs, crates/engine/tests/geometry_calculator.rs, crates/analysis/src/network.rs
Geometry calculation and shortest-route distance calculations now use WGS 84 measurements. Geometry tests check reference values and use the new ring-area helper.
Map measurements and documentation crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md, docs/user-guide/data.md, docs/user-guide/editing.md
Earth map measurements use WGS 84 metrics; other bodies retain body-scaled geodesic calculations. The guides describe these measurement bases and the spherical Spatial Join area calculation.
Calculate Geometry and the Earth Measure tool can report a wrong area for world-spanning bands (zero) and for polygons larger than half the Earth (the smaller complement). Typical regional polygons are measured correctly. Fix these two edge cases, or document them as unsupported, before merging.

Explanation
The title names the three measurement paths the PR changes: attribute-table Calculate Geometry, the Measure tools, and the network tools. It also names the WGS 84 ellipsoid as the new basis. The title is specific and matches the changeset. It is long, at 98 characters, but it is not vague.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Summary, Testing, and Related issue content. The Summary explains the change, the reason, the affected paths, the new helpers, and the limits. The Testing section lists the tests run, the commands, and the results. The Related issue section is present as a 'Fixes #939' reference in the Summary, and no separate Related issue heading is included. This gap is minor, so the description is mostly complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #939 requires WGS 84 ellipsoidal measurements in the attribute-table Calculate Geometry path, Earth Measure tools, and network edge and route calculations. The diff replaces the attribute-table sphere helpers with wgs84_length_m and wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2. Earth map measurements use the same helpers, while other bodies retain body-scaled spherical measurements. Network edge costs, snap distances, attachment edges, and direct same-segment routes use wgs84_distance_m. The new geometry and engine tests cover GeographicLib reference values, winding, antimeridian rings, lengths, and attribute-table area and perimeter results.

Explanation
The changes stay within issue #939. The new shared helpers, focused tests, documentation, and finite-value handling support the affected measurement paths. The documentation explicitly records that Spatial Join largest-overlap areas and non-Earth body measurements remain unchanged. No unrelated feature or behavior change is demonstrated.

Performance (medium-high confidence):nearest now runs a GeographicLib inverse solve for every segment of the network, and it does so twice per route (once for each end). Before, this was a haversine of about 20 ns per segment; now it is a few microseconds. A 1,000,000-segment layer costs seconds per route, where it used to cost milliseconds. The PR's timing argument covers the edge build but not this scan, which is O(segments) per snap.
Suggested direction: rank candidates with the cheap haversine_m(q, p) (or the planar distance already computed), then call wgs84_distance_m once on the winning segment for the snap-distance check and the attach length. Near-ties may pick a different but equally close segment, which is acceptable here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (high confidence):wgs84_distance_m (above this hunk, unchanged) has no non-finite guard, unlike haversine_m. Its clamp(-90.0, 90.0) turns a +∞ latitude into the North Pole, so wgs84_length_m(&[Coord::new(0.0, 0.0), Coord::new(0.0, f64::INFINITY)]) returns a finite ~10,002 km instead of NaN. This PR now routes measure lengths, network edges and snaps through that function, so a corrupt vertex measures as a pole, the outcome the PR's comments say to avoid. The new tests only check NaN.
Suggested fix in wgs84_distance_m, plus an infinity case in wgs84_measures_match_geographiclib:
pubfnwgs84_distance_m(a:Coord,b:Coord) -> f64{// As `haversine_m`: a broken vertex is no place. The clamp below would turn +∞ into a pole.if !a.is_finite() || !b.is_finite(){return f64::NAN;}let(s12, _):(f64,f64) = WGS84.inverse(a.y.clamp(-90.0,90.0), a.x, b.y.clamp(-90.0,90.0), b.x);
s12
}
wgs84_distance_m (crates/geom/src/lib.rs, unchanged, reached through the new wgs84_length_m) has no non-finite guard, unlike haversine_m. Its clamp(-90, 90) turns a +∞ latitude into the North Pole, so a corrupt vertex measures as about 10,002 km instead of NaN. The new tests cover only NaN. Posted inline with a fix. Confidence: high.
Performance
nearest in crates/analysis/src/network.rs now runs a GeographicLib inverse for every network segment, twice per route. The cost was about 20 ns per segment with haversine and is now a few µs, so a 1M-segment layer goes from milliseconds to seconds per route. Suggested: rank candidates with haversine_m or the planar distance, then solve once for the winner. Posted inline. Confidence: medium-high.
Quality
Nit: wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 clamps latitude to ±90 silently, so an out-of-range latitude such as 95 gives a plausible area. That conflicts with its own "NaN, never a plausible number" comment. Confidence: medium.
Nit: the test comment "a NaN absorbing match on the older behaviour" in a_non_finite_coordinate_is_no_distance_no_area_and_no_place is unclear. Reword it.
Nit: the data.md paragraph in the docs diff is reflowed unevenly. Rewrap it.
Consistency (outside the diff, not anchorable)
crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs (around lines 999 and 1026) still measures distance, area and perimeter on the sphere. It is the same measurement family the PR moves to WGS 84, and the PR argues that one feature should not measure differently by path. Either include it or state in the PR why it is out of scope. Confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
I found no violations in non-test code: no unwrap, expect, panic, unsafe, or std::time. The engine test uses .unwrap(), which is allowed in test code. Each NaN fix has a regression test. I did not run cargo xtask ci, since I have no shell.
I checked the ellipsoid ring closure, the Earth-only branch in mapview.rs, and the docs against the code. Constants and GeographicLib reference values are not independently verified.

Preserve full-turn longitude edges.
For the existing world-band ring (-180,-10) → (180,-10) → (180,10) → (-180,10), the endpoints of each 360° edge are the same geographic point. Passing only those points to PolygonArea loses the full turn and yields zero area. The previous spherical helper explicitly retained 360° edges, and its test requires a nonzero band area. Handle this representation before geodesic accumulation, or reject it explicitly instead of writing zero to a calculated area field. GeographicLib’s add_point accumulates the inverse geodesic between successive points. (docs.rs)

Preserve areas larger than half the ellipsoid.
For a ring enclosing more than half the Earth, compute(true) reduces its signed area to the half-Earth range. area.abs() then returns the smaller complement. The attribute-table calculator stores that incorrect area, although the guide says large non-polar regions retain their full area. Determine the intended interior before selecting the unsigned-area calculation, and test both ring directions for a greater-than-hemisphere polygon. GeographicLib documents this distinction for compute(true). (docs.rs)
