feat(services): identify WMS layers with GetFeatureInfo - #943
Clicking a WMS layer with Explore now shows the attributes of the features under the click. This uses the standard WMS GetFeatureInfo request.
What it does
From the capabilities: each WMS layer gets its GetFeatureInfo request. That covers the GET address from the request's DCPType (which can differ from GetMap's), the version, the INFO_FORMATs the service offers and the layer's queryable attribute. queryable is inherited from parent layers, as WMS 1.3.0 Table 7 says.
The request: a 101×101-pixel window of the map around the click, at the view's resolution, in EPSG:3857. It uses LAYERS/QUERY_LAYERS, STYLES=, FORMAT, INFO_FORMAT, FEATURE_COUNT=10 and EXCEPTIONS. With 1.3.0 it sends CRS and I/J; with 1.1.1 it sends SRS and X/Y.
Answer formats: the request asks for GeoJSON first, then GML, other XML, plain text and HTML. The reader detects the format from the answer itself, so it handles:
GeoJSON (layer from layerName/layerBodId or a GeoServer layer.fid id)
GML feature collections (featureMember(s), WFS 2 member) and MapServer's msGMLOutput
Esri's FeatureInfoResponse
GeoServer's and MapServer's name = value text
HTML, as its text
A ServiceExceptionReport is reported as an error. Answers are capped like capabilities (features, attributes, value length, XML nodes).
Pop-up:identify lists the WMS requests in featureInfo. The app fetches them in the background, and their features join the pop-up (‹ 1 of n ›) as they arrive. While the answers are on their way, the pop-up title reads "Asking the map service…". Errors appear as toasts.
Which layers are asked: visible mode asks every WMS layer that is shown (up to 8). Topmost mode asks only the top WMS layer, and only when no feature of the map's own layers is under the click. The selection modes ask none.
New command identify.featureInfo: reads an answer passed as text. On the command line, MCP and the assistant, it asks the service itself and waits, like the service.* commands do. It is in the NETWORK list, so plugins need the network permission to run it.
Project format: unchanged
The request lives in a runtime-only field, #[serde(skip)] TileLayer::feature_info. Its type, ogc::FeatureInfo, already derives Serialize/Deserialize, so saving it later is a one-attribute change. A WMS layer from a saved project works out its service's GetCapabilities address from the GetMap template it keeps. On the first click it reads the capabilities once, then asks as usual. A test checks that the saved project contains no feature-info data.
Tests
rustgis-data (ogc::info): capabilities parsing, including inherited and overridden queryable, the DCPType address and no GetFeatureInfo offered; 1.3.0 and 1.1.1 requests; recovering the service from a template; GeoJSON, GML, MapServer, Esri, text and HTML answers; exceptions; hostile input.
rustgis-engine (identify_asks_wms_layers): service.add through identify to identify.featureInfo; hidden and non-queryable layers aren't asked; a reopened project reads the capabilities first; the selection modes don't ask.
Live check against swisstopo (wms.geo.admin.ch, ch.bfs.gebaeude_wohnungs_register at Zürich Bahnhofplatz): the CLI and the app both return the two building entrances there with their GWR attributes.
cargo xtask ci passes. cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web is clean.
Not included
WMTS GetFeatureInfo (KVP and RESTful resourceType="FeatureInfo"). It could follow the same pattern.
Highlighting the answered geometry, and adding WMS features to the selection.
Identify pop-ups can show results from visible, queryable WMS layers, with features appearing as they arrive. Topmost mode checks the highest queryable WMS layer covering the click when no map or vector-tile feature is under it.
WMS feature information supports GeoJSON, GML, other XML, plain text, and HTML. Command-line tools can inspect feature-info requests and answers or send requests and retrieve results.
Pop-ups show which layers are being queried and report request failures.
Documentation
Updated the editing guide with WMS identify behavior and command-line options.
Identify (topmost and visible pop-up modes) now asks the WMS layers drawn
under the click what is there, with a standard GetFeatureInfo request:
- The capabilities give each WMS layer its request: the GetFeatureInfo
DCPType GET address, the version (1.3.0 CRS/I/J or 1.1.1 SRS/X/Y),
the offered INFO_FORMATs and the layer's queryable attribute
(inherited, as the standard says). A 101-pixel window of the map
around the point at the view's resolution, FEATURE_COUNT=10,
EXCEPTIONS as XML.
- Answers are read whatever the format: GeoJSON (preferred), GML
(feature collections, MapServer's msGMLOutput), Esri's XML, plain
text (GeoServer's and MapServer's name = value lines) and HTML;
a ServiceExceptionReport is an error.
- identify lists the requests in "featureInfo"; the app fetches them in
the background and the answers join the pop-up as they arrive.
identify.featureInfo reads an answer, or on the command line asks the
service and waits.
The project format is unchanged: the request is a runtime-only field on
the tile layer (a type that already derives Serialize/Deserialize, so a
later format change can keep it). A WMS layer from a project finds its
request by reading its service's capabilities on the first click.

Walkthrough
This change adds WMS GetFeatureInfo metadata, request construction, and answer parsing. Identify commands list eligible requests and process answers. Map popups fetch capabilities and answers, then add parsed results. Tests and user-guide documentation cover the flow.
Changes: WMS feature-info flow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
WMS metadata and answer parsing crates/data/src/ogc.rs, crates/data/src/ogc_info.rs, crates/map/src/tiles.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs
WMS parsing creates per-layer feature-info metadata and carries queryability through the layer tree. Other service layer constructors initialize the field to None. New types build requests, convert GetMap templates, and parse supported answer formats. Map tiles store this metadata without serializing it. Service-layer addition copies it to the tile.
Identify requests and command handling crates/engine/src/cmd/select.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/select_info.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/tiles.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
identify includes eligible WMS requests in its results. identify.featureInfo lists requests, learns request data from capabilities, parses supplied answers, and fetches data on native targets. The command is added to the network command list. Tests cover requests, parsing, layer eligibility, capabilities after a project round trip, and refusal to request a local-network endpoint.
The popup starts WMS requests, processes capabilities and answer responses, adds parsed features, and displays pending layers. The user guide describes identify behavior and the command.

Nit: this line is far over the file's usual width, so cargo fmt will probably reflow it. Run cargo xtask ci to confirm. Also, queryable is inherited from the parent only when the attribute is absent, which matches the WMS spec. Values other than 1/true (e.g. TRUE) count as false, so compare case-insensitively with eq_ignore_ascii_case. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
after.to_ascii_lowercase() copies the whole remainder of the document on every <script/<style tag. A hostile answer made of many short blocks (up to the 8 MB download cap) costs O(n²), which hangs the UI or CLI. This breaks the "answers are hostile input" rule. Lowercase once before the loop and search that copy by offset. Confidence: medium-high.
This PR adds WMS GetFeatureInfo support to Identify. I read the whole diff but did not build the code or run any tests. Two inline comments are posted: a performance finding and a nit.
Bugs
None confirmed. I traced the capabilities → request → answer flow, including the project-reload case, where the layer asks for the service's capabilities again. It terminates, because learn always sets feature_info.
Security
Performance and denial of service (medium-high):html_text in crates/data/src/ogc_info.rs copies the rest of the document with to_ascii_lowercase() on every <script or <style tag. A hostile answer made of many short blocks, up to the 8 MB cap, would take O(n²) time and could hang the UI or CLI. Lowercase the text once before the loop.
The request and capabilities URLs go through is_web, and answers are length-capped. I found no injection issue.
Performance
Same html_text finding as above.
Quality
Nit (low): one long line in crates/data/src/ogc.rs (the queryable parsing) will probably be reflowed by cargo fmt. Treating values like TRUE as false is spec-consistent but strict, so you could compare case-insensitively.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap(), panic! or unsafe in the non-test code I read.
User-visible text uses tl! and i18n::fmt. Code paths for wasm are guarded with cfg.
identify.featureInfo is listed in NETWORK.
Not verified: whether hostile_params_never_panic covers identify.featureInfo, and whether the docs and ribbon guidelines are met.

… local endpoints not asked
- html_text lowercases the answer once instead of the rest of it at every script or style tag.
- The app fetches capabilities and answers with the 8 MiB limit identify.featureInfo uses.
- A request whose address reaches into the local network from a service on the web isn't made.
- queryable="TRUE" counts as queryable.

Plain-text parsing treats any line starting with Feature or Layer as a heading, before the name = value check. An attribute such as Feature class = Road or Layer name = x is silently swallowed and splits the feature. Checking for " = " first, or matching headings more strictly (Feature <digits>:, Layer '…'), would avoid that. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 7379864: a line containing = is always an attribute, so Feature class = Road and Layer name = x no longer read as headings. A test covers both.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
descendants() matching member also matches an attribute element named member nested inside a feature, which would produce a spurious feature. Restricting to the collection's direct children, or skipping members already inside a matched member, is safer. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 7379864: a member, featureMember or featureMembers element inside another one counts as a feature's attribute, not as a feature. A WFS 2 test with an attribute named member reads one feature.

In topmost mode, filter_map(next_fetch) drops the top layer when it is out of bounds or fails the address check, then take(1) picks the next layer down. That asks a lower WMS layer, not the topmost one, contrary to the documented behaviour. Taking the first askable layer first and then calling next_fetch on it would match the docs. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This is as documented: "the WMS tile layers drawn at a point … only the topmost when first_layer". A layer whose bounds don't cover the point isn't drawn there, so the topmost layer drawn there is the next one down, and asking it is what Identify should do. A layer whose GetFeatureInfo address is refused can't be asked at all. Skipping it for the next layer down beats returning nothing, because the layer still draws its GetMap tiles. Leaving as is.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Layers are looked up by name only, and the first match wins. If two WMS tile layers share a title (the same layer added twice, or two services with a same-named layer), answers and learned capabilities go to the wrong one. The identify output only carries tileLayer as a name, so the ambiguity is hard to avoid. Worth confirming tiles::add makes names unique. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Tile layers are identified by name in every command (map.setTiles, map.removeTiles, the layer list), not only here. Adding the same layer again replaces it, since the same URL and name replace the old one. Two services offering a layer with the same title can share a name, but that ambiguity predates this PR and applies to all tile commands. It belongs in a separate change to how tile layers are named. Leaving as is.
I've posted four inline comments. Next is the final review summary.
Code review
The PR adds WMS GetFeatureInfo support to Identify. It reads the request from the capabilities, builds the point request, parses the answers, and adds the identify.featureInfo command and the pop-up wiring. The code follows the repo rules: no unwrap outside tests, answers are capped, a local-network guard is applied to request URLs, the project format is unchanged, and the UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. I read the diff and some surrounding code but did not build or run the tests.
Bugs
Topmost mode can ask the wrong layer (select_info.rs, requests, medium confidence): filter_map(next_fetch).take(1) skips a top layer that is out of bounds or fails the address check. It then asks the next layer down, not the topmost one the docs describe.
Plain-text parser swallows some attributes (ogc_info.rs, plain_features, low-medium): any line starting with Feature or Layer is read as a heading, even when it is a name = value pair such as Feature class = Road.
GML member matching can add spurious features (ogc_info.rs, xml_features, low): descendants() also matches an attribute element named member inside a feature.
Layers are found by name only (select_info.rs, wms_layer, low): two WMS tile layers with the same name would get each other's answers and capabilities. This depends on whether tiles::add makes names unique, which I did not check.
Security
No concrete problems found. The request URL comes from the capabilities and is passed through address::check against the layer's own URL before it is fetched. Downloads are size-capped at 8 MB, and the XML, JSON, text and HTML readers cap features, attributes, value length and nodes.
I did not check whether fetch_into_limited and download_blocking_limited follow redirects into local addresses. The address check only covers the first URL (low confidence).
Performance
No significant issues. html_text lowercases the input once, so it stays linear, and a test covers 200,000 short scripts. read_feature_info lowercases the whole answer when byte 512 is not a character boundary, which is bounded by the 8 MB cap.
Quality
select_info.rs and ogc_info.rs are cohesive and well tested. Only identify_asks_wms_layers in the engine and read_feature_info in the data crate have hostile-input tests. The new identify.featureInfo command should also be covered by the hostile_params_never_panic sweep, which I believe happens automatically through the command registry.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The new command is in the NETWORK list, the wasm32 paths are gated, #[serde(skip)] keeps the project format unchanged, and there are no new dependencies or assets.

The url branch above runs address::check(url, Some(&t.url)), but this capabilities branch doesn't. The capabilities address is derived from the layer's saved template, and a project file is untrusted. A project whose WMS template points into the local network would get a GET there from identify (native fetch, or the UI's fetch_into_limited). That is the case the comment above describes. Tile fetching may already check the template, but this is a new request path. Consider applying the same check to the capabilities address. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining. wms_layer_of(&t.url) builds the capabilities address from the layer's own URL: same scheme, host and path, with only the query replaced. So address::check(caps, Some(&t.url)) can't fail where the layer's tiles are allowed. A local caps address means a local t.url, which makes the origin local too. A project whose WMS template points into the local network already has its GetMap tiles fetched from there, so the capabilities request adds no new destination. A forbidden address is still refused by the downloader's own address::check(url, None).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Two small points. (1) MAX_INFO_BYTES duplicates MAX_BYTES in select_info.rs, so the two limits can drift apart. Consider exposing one constant from the engine. (2) The comment says it plainly: up to 8 MB of hostile JSON, XML or text is parsed on the frame thread, for each of up to 8 layers. A much lower cap, such as 1 MB, is plenty for a 10-feature answer and avoids UI stalls. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
(1) Taken in bb7d303: one pub const MAX_INFO_BYTES in rustgis_data::ogc, used by identify.featureInfo and by both of the pop-up's fetches. (2) Kept at 8 MiB. Capabilities documents come through the same limit, and a large service's capabilities, with hundreds of layers and their styles, run to several MB. Parsing is linear now, the reader stops at 100 features and 200 attributes each, and the text is read at most 100,000 lines deep.
I read the whole diff (ogc.rs, the new ogc_info.rs and select_info.rs, and the changes to select.rs, service.rs, tiles.rs, the map tiles.rs, mapview.rs, the docs and tests). I did not build or run anything. The change is well structured and follows the repository rules. I found one security gap, and the rest are nits.
Bugs
None confirmed. I checked the BBOX and the I/J centre pixel for the 101-pixel window, the queryable inheritance, the cutoff logic for topmost mode, and the popup lifecycle (asks dropped, popup closing when nothing is found). All look correct.
Security
Capabilities fetch skips the address check (crates/engine/src/cmd/select_info.rs:75, medium confidence). The url branch of next_fetch runs address::check, but the capabilities branch does not. That address comes from a saved project's WMS template, which is untrusted. A project pointing at the local network would trigger a GET there, either through the native fetch or the UI's fetch_into_limited. A committable suggestion is on the comment.
Performance
Large answers parsed on the frame thread (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:24, low confidence). Up to 8 MB per answer, for up to 8 layers, is parsed on the UI thread. A cap of about 1 MB would be enough for a 10-feature answer.
Quality
Duplicated byte limit (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:24, low). MAX_INFO_BYTES duplicates MAX_BYTES in the engine. Expose one constant.
html_text entity decoding order (crates/data/src/ogc_info.rs, low). & is decoded before < and the others, so < becomes < (double decoding). It is cosmetic. Decoding & last avoids it.
flush in plain_features (crates/data/src/ogc_info.rs, nit). current.clear() after mem::take is redundant, except when the feature cap is hit, where it is intended. A short comment would help.
HTML detection (crates/data/src/ogc_info.rs, nit). If byte 512 falls inside a multi-byte character, text.get(..512) returns None and the whole answer is lowercased. It is harmless, but floor_char_boundary or a byte-slice check is cleaner.
AGENTS.md
No violations found: no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code, and sizes are capped. The new command is in the NETWORK list, user-visible text uses tl! and i18n::fmt, and the wasm path is handled with cfg gates. The ui-egui code uses web_time-safe Duration only.
Coverage is good, including an engine test for the local-network refusal.
I didn't see a hostile-parameters regression test specific to identify.featureInfo. The existing hostile_params_never_panic should cover it, since it iterates all commands.

Bug (confidence: high). When the service has no GetFeatureInfo element, info_request is None, so this leaves feature_info as None. askable() in select_info.rs then falls back to wms_layer_of(&t.url).is_some(), which is true for any WMS template. Every identify click on such a layer therefore asks: the popup flashes "Asking the map service…" with the layer name, downloads the capabilities, and closes. Each layer pays that once on its first click.
Storing a non-queryable request for these layers keeps them out of the ask:

Fixed in d7e4af5, as suggested: a service without GetFeatureInfo gives each layer a request that is never asked (no formats). askable then skips the layer without fetching the capabilities, even on the first click. The test without_a_get_feature_info_request_layers_are_not_queryable checks it. In practice the cost was one fetch per layer, because learn already stored the same non-queryable request after the first ask.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (confidence: medium).learn fetches the service's full capabilities for each WMS layer on its first query, and download_blocking_limited does not cache. A project with eight layers from one service therefore makes eight downloads of up to 8 MB each, plus eight parses, all for the same document. A per-service cache of the parsed feature_info for the session would avoid that. This is not a one-line change, so no suggestion.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining for this PR. The fetch happens once per layer per session, and only for a layer opened from a project. A layer added from the service already has its request, and after its first ask learn keeps it. Eight layers from one service in one project pay eight first-click fetches, which are not repeated. A per-service cache would need a session-level store keyed by capabilities address, with its own invalidation. That's a follow-up, if it shows up in practice.

Bug (confidence: high, low severity).& is decoded before < and >, so an answer containing < displays < where it should display <. Decoding & last avoids the double decode:
A WMS service with no GetFeatureInfo element still gets asked on every identify click. The layer's feature_info stays None, so askable() falls back to the template check. The popup flashes "Asking the map service…" and downloads capabilities once per layer, then closes. Suggestion posted on crates/data/src/ogc.rs:460. Confidence: high.
HTML entity decoding in html_text runs & before </>, so < displays as <. Low severity. Suggestion posted on crates/data/src/ogc_info.rs:389. Confidence: high.
Security
No issues found. GetFeatureInfo URLs are checked with address::check before use, and native downloads run address::check inside download_blocking_within. Answers are capped by MAX_INFO_BYTES and the XML node limit, and are rendered as plain text. Confidence: medium-high.
Performance
Each project-loaded WMS layer re-downloads and re-parses its service's capabilities on its first query, with no caching. Eight layers from one service means eight downloads of up to 8 MB each. Comment posted on crates/engine/src/cmd/select_info.rs:111. Confidence: medium.
Quality (nits, not posted inline)
The docs say Topmost asks "only when no feature of the map's own layers is under the click". The code also suppresses asks when a vector-tile feature is found. Confidence: medium.
requests(first_layer) skips a non-queryable top WMS layer and asks the next queryable one below it, so "only the top WMS layer" is not quite what happens. This may be intended. Confidence: low.
wms_layer and the popup's Ask identify layers by name, so two tile layers with the same name are ambiguous. Confidence: low.
follow_asks takes the capabilities-path window size from the camera at answer time, not at click time, so a pan or zoom while waiting changes the request window. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Compliant as far as I can read. There is no unwrap/expect in non-test code (clippy.toml allows them in tests), user-visible strings use tl!/i18n::fmt, identify.featureInfo is in the NETWORK list, the wasm path is cfg-gated, and docs/user-guide/editing.md is updated. I did not run cargo xtask ci, and I could not check that hostile_params_never_panic covers the new command.

Quality / doc mismatch (confidence ~0.5): this gate repeats the one at line 325, but it is evaluated after tile_features has extended results. So a vector-tile feature under the click suppresses the WMS asks in Topmost mode. docs/user-guide/editing.md says WMS is asked "only when no feature of the map's own layers is under the click". Either take the emptiness before the tile features are added and reuse it for both gates, or update the doc to say vector tile features count too.

Both bots raised this, so 8474895 updates the user guide rather than the behaviour. Topmost asks WMS layers only when no feature of the map's own layers or of its vector tile layers is under the click. A vector-tile feature is the topmost thing drawn there, so this is intended. 7d82528 also makes the paragraph exact about which layers are asked and in which formats.

Bug (confidence ~0.4): a non-UTF-8 answer is rejected as "perhaps an image", even when it is XML that declares ISO-8859-1 or windows-1252 (some older servers answer that way). The error is misleading and the feature info is lost. Reading an answer that starts with < as Latin-1 keeps images out of the text path:

Regression (confidence ~0.7): identify now returns {} (not null) when only WMS answers are pending, so the _ arm with select.clear no longer runs. A click on empty map with a queryable WMS overlay used to clear the selection and now leaves it, and it stays even if the service answers nothing (the popup closes silently). Clearing when nothing was found restores the old behaviour:

Fixed in 8474895: when identify finds nothing but WMS layers to ask, the click clears the selection as an empty click does. Fixed with ogc::answer_text (8474895, widened in 7d82528). A non-UTF-8 answer is read as Latin-1 when it contains no C0 or C1 control characters, which ISO-8859-1 text never contains, and an image is still refused. Security, low (confidence ~0.3): the request address on this path goes through address::check (the comment above says why), but the capabilities address does not. It comes from the tile layer's own template, so it targets the host the tile is already fetched from, and the exposure is small. It is still inconsistent with the stated rule. Checking it the same way closes the gap:

Resolve the GetFeatureInfo href before using the fallback endpoint.
request_of rejects relative and scheme-relative OnlineResource hrefs with is_web. It then uses endpoint(url), so a service exposing GetFeatureInfo at a path such as /feature-info receives the request at the capabilities endpoint instead. Identify can therefore fail with an HTTP or service error instead of returning features.

Remove reserved WMS keys before appending GetFeatureInfo parameters.
FeatureInfo::request passes self.url to with_query, which preserves the existing query and appends another query. If the advertised URL already contains VERSION, REQUEST, LAYERS, CRS/SRS, or FORMAT, the request contains duplicate WMS keys. A server can select the existing value instead of the generated value, causing a rejected request or a response for the wrong operation, layer, CRS, or format. Remove only reserved WMS keys and preserve unrelated parameters such as tokens or map.

…ced, Latin-1 answers read, empty clicks clear the selection
- A relative GetFeatureInfo OnlineResource resolves against the capabilities address, and WMS keys
it carries (REQUEST, VERSION, LAYERS, INFO_FORMAT, ...) give way to the request's own.
- The app reads an answer as the command does (answer_text): Latin-1 XML or HTML as its characters,
an image refused.
- A click that finds nothing but WMS layers to ask clears the selection, as an empty click did.
- GML members past the most features read aren't turned into features.
- The capabilities address of a project's WMS layer goes through address::check too.
- The user guide says Topmost asks the highest WMS layer that can be asked, after vector tiles.
… capped, ncWMS and other XML read, capabilities read once per service
- An answer that lands after another map or project is shown is dropped, and one for a layer
removed or renamed meanwhile is dropped without an error.
- Every XML branch stops at the most features read (MapServer, Esri FIELDS, featureMembers).
- ncWMS's FeatureInfo children are its values; XML that is no feature collection shows its values
or text; a page's head and title aren't the answer.
- Latin-1 answers and capabilities read the same in the app and natively (answer_text).
- One layer's capabilities teach the map's other layers from the same service their requests.
- The user guide says which WMS layers are asked, in which formats, and Topmost's first click on a
project's layer.
Relative GetFeatureInfo addresses (ogc.rs, request_of): the OnlineResource href is resolved against the capabilities address (resolve), so /feature-info goes to that path on the service's host and not to the capabilities endpoint (8474895).
Reserved WMS keys in the advertised address (ogc_info.rs, request_of): the GetMap and GetFeatureInfo keys the address carries (REQUEST, VERSION, LAYERS, CRS/SRS, FORMAT, INFO_FORMAT, I/J, …) are removed before the request's own are added. Other parameters, such as map= or a token, are kept, and an address without such keys is left as it is (8474895).
Both have tests in the_advertised_address_is_resolved_and_its_request_keys_replaced.
@pick2510 Thanks. Source inspection confirms both fixes:
request_of resolves the advertised OnlineResource against the capabilities address.
without_wms_keys removes reserved WMS keys case-insensitively, preserves parameters such as map and tokens, and leaves addresses without reserved keys unchanged.
The test the_advertised_address_is_resolved_and_its_request_keys_replaced covers both reported cases. I did not run the tests.
Both findings are addressed.

Performance (high confidence): the capabilities are not read once per service on the pop-up path. requests emits one {capabilities} entry per layer that doesn't know its request yet, so a click in Visible mode with eight project WMS layers from one service starts eight parallel downloads of the same document (up to 8 MB each). Each landed answer then re-runs learn, which parses the whole document again. The sibling-learning in learn only helps after the first answer lands, and by then the other fetches are already under way. The commit message and docs/user-guide/editing.md ("once for all the map's layers from that service") promise otherwise.
Suggested fix: emit at most one capabilities entry per capabilities URL in requests (for example, dedupe on caps before take(wanted)), and have Popup::new / follow_asks share one slot per URL.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 9523e34. The pop-up groups the asks that share a capabilities address, so one download and one parse serve all the service's layers waiting for them. learn teaches each of them its request, and each then asks with request: true. If the first layer of a group is removed while the download runs, the next one still on the map takes its place.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Consistency (medium confidence):askable requires t.overlay, but tile_features (select.rs) takes t.id.is_empty() || t.overlay. A WMS layer added with map.addTiles has overlay false by default, so identify.featureInfo accepts it (wms_layer only checks the template) while Identify never lists it. The docs say "WMS tile layers that are shown", which this does not match.
Either mirror the tile_features rule ((t.id.is_empty() || t.overlay)) or say in the docs why user-added WMS basemaps are excluded.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 9523e34: askable now follows the vector-tile rule (t.id.is_empty() || t.overlay). Any WMS layer except a catalog basemap is asked, including one added with map.addTiles. A test adds one by its address and checks that Identify lists it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Input handling (medium confidence):MAX_INFO_BYTES is documented as the cap "by the command and by the app alike", but a text parameter goes straight to read_feature_info with no byte limit. Only the XML path is bounded (by node count). AGENTS.md asks for command parameters to be clamped.
Suggested fix, before the parse:

Fixed in 9523e34: text and capabilities are refused past twice MAX_INFO_BYTES, with the layer named in the error. The factor of two covers a full 8 MB Latin-1 download, which can double in size as UTF-8 after answer_text. A test covers both parameters.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit (high confidence): "in the answer's order" is not what happens for JSON. The workspace enables no serde_jsonpreserve_order feature, so serde_json::Map is a BTreeMap and GeoJSON attributes come out sorted. The geojson_answers test already expects the sorted order (lanes, name, note for an answer that lists name first). Fix the comment to say that order is alphabetical for JSON and document order for XML and text.
Scope: the WMS GetFeatureInfo change in PR #943 (parser, identify wiring, pop-up asks). I read the full diff, checked the cross-file dependencies and helper signatures, and checked the SSRF path (address::check on the initial URL and on every redirect hop). I did not build or run the tests; everything below is from reading the code.
Bugs
None confirmed. The compile-level checks I could do by reading (struct literals, derives, imports, helper signatures, Popup and TileLayer construction) came out clean.
Security
None found. The GetFeatureInfo address is checked with address::check(url, Some(&t.url)) before any fetch, and the test covers a private-address target. Redirects are re-checked in the shared get path. I found no issue with the None origin used on the CLI path, because check(url, None) permits local addresses, which matches the UI.
Performance
High confidence: the pop-up path does not read capabilities once per service. requests emits one {capabilities} entry per unknown layer, so a Visible click on eight project layers from one service starts eight parallel downloads of the same document, and each answer re-parses it. The "read once" claim in the commit message and docs/user-guide/editing.md holds only for the CLI path. (inline: select_info.rs:84)
Quality
Medium confidence:askable requires overlay, but tile_features accepts id.is_empty() || overlay. A WMS layer added via map.addTiles can be passed to identify.featureInfo but is never listed by Identify. (inline: select_info.rs:50)
Medium confidence:identify.featureInfo takes text without the MAX_INFO_BYTES cap that its doc comment says applies to "the command and the app alike". AGENTS.md asks for command parameters to be clamped. (inline: select_info.rs:147, with a suggestion)
High confidence, nit: the InfoFeature.attributes doc says "in the answer's order", but JSON attributes come out sorted, because serde_json is built without preserve_order and the geojson_answers test expects the sorted order. (inline: ogc_info.rs:188)
Low confidence, behaviour note:identify now returns {} plus featureInfo for a WMS-only click where it used to return null (select.rs:344). The UI handles this. CLI, MCP and assistant callers that treat non-null as "found" will see a different shape. CONTRIBUTING does not list output changes as coordinate-first, so this is for awareness only.
Low confidence: an XML answer that fails to parse, including one over the 1,000,000-node cap, falls back silently to one "text" attribute holding all its text (ogc_info.rs:227). It is bounded, but a large valid GML answer will look like a garbage blob rather than features or an error.
AGENTS.md
The #![deny(clippy::unwrap_used)] rules are respected in non-test code: I found no unwrap, expect, indexing or panic in the new non-test code.
User-visible text uses tl! and i18n::fmt. Engine error strings are plain English, as elsewhere in the engine.
The new command is in the NETWORK list, and the hostile-parameter test covers it through the registry.
The wasm gating looks correct: the blocking download is cfg(not wasm32), and the browser path returns an error.
Unverified: the browser path fetches GetFeatureInfo with fetch_into_limited. Most WMS servers without CORS headers will fail there, so each Visible click may raise a toast per layer. The PR only checks that the wasm target compiles, so this needs a test in the web app.

…dded WMS layers asked, answers capped as parameters, errors told once
- The pop-up fetches a service's capabilities once for all its layers waiting for them; each then
asks with the request it learned.
- A WMS tile layer added by its address is asked as vector tile layers' features are (any layer
but a catalog basemap), not only overlays from a service.
- identify.featureInfo refuses text or capabilities past MAX_INFO_BYTES.
- The command's errors name the layer, and the pop-up no longer tells them a second time.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Errors from identify.featureInfo are dropped silently.let Ok(v) = r else { continue }; discards every command error, so a service exception (e.g. LayerNotQueryable), a failed capabilities read in learn, or the "larger than N MB" refusal never reaches the user. The PR description says "Errors appear as toasts", and the command's own comment says "the app shows them as they are". Also, when the capabilities path fails, the also layers that were waiting on it are never asked, with no message.
Suggested fix (the command's errors already name the layer, so they can be shown as they are):
Suggested change
letOk(v) = r else{continue};
letv = match r {
Ok(v) => v,
Err(e) => {
app.session.notify(e,true);
continue;
}
};
Confidence: high (about 0.85). I read the loop and found no other path that reports these errors.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not dropped. Session::run notifies every command error itself, unless quiet_failure is set, and only the plugin runner sets that (crates/engine/src/lib.rs, the if let Err(e) = &res && !quiet { self.notify(e.clone(), true) } near the end of run). So a service exception, a failed learn or the size refusal is already shown, once, with the layer named by the command's named prefix. Notifying it again here is what 9523e34 removed, because every WMS error used to show twice. When the capabilities fail, that one error (under the group's first layer) covers the service's other layers in the group: they wait on the same document, so asking them would only repeat it. Leaving as is.
Read the full diff (11 files, including the new ogc_info.rs and select_info.rs), the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the call sites the new code depends on. I could not build or run tests (no shell here), so the compile and wasm checks below are by reading only.
Bugs
Command errors are dropped silently in the pop-up.follow_asks in crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:2895 uses let Ok(v) = r else { continue };. Service exceptions, a failed capabilities read in learn, and the over-size refusal never reach the user, and when the capabilities path fails the other layers waiting on it are never asked. This contradicts the PR text ("Errors appear as toasts") and the command's comment ("the app shows them as they are"). Inline comment posted with a fix. Confidence: high (~0.85).

follow_asks runs identify.featureInfo with the answer text on the UI frame thread. That means parsing up to 16 MB, including XML up to 1M nodes and an HTML lowercase copy, inside a frame. Consider moving the parse off-frame, or lowering the cap for the UI path. Confidence: low-medium (~0.4).
Quality
crates/engine/src/cmd/select.rs:325 and :330 repeat the same matches!(mode, Topmost | Visible) && (!first_layer || results.is_empty()) condition. Bind it once. Nit, high confidence.
The identify docs say "up to 100" features, but WMS features are appended on top of that cap, so the total can exceed 100. Nit, medium confidence.
Topmost with a project-loaded WMS layer (queryability unknown) picks that layer and does not fall through to lower queryable layers if it turns out not queryable. This matches the docs, so it is a design note, not a defect. Confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect or unsafe, and clippy.toml allows unwrap in tests. User-visible text uses tl!. The new code adds no dependencies (url, roxmltree and serde are already in rustgis-data). The web build is handled with cfg(target_arch = "wasm32"), and the blocking download is native-only.
Not verified: cargo xtask ci and the wasm build. Please run them.

Clicking a WMS layer with Explore now shows the attributes of the features under the click. This uses the standard WMS GetFeatureInfo request.
What it does
From the capabilities: each WMS layer gets its GetFeatureInfo request. That covers the GET address from the request's DCPType (which can differ from GetMap's), the version, the INFO_FORMATs the service offers and the layer's
queryableattribute.queryableis inherited from parent layers, as WMS 1.3.0 Table 7 says. The request: a 101×101-pixel window of the map around the click, at the view's resolution, in EPSG:3857. It uses
LAYERS/QUERY_LAYERS,STYLES=,FORMAT,INFO_FORMAT,FEATURE_COUNT=10andEXCEPTIONS. With 1.3.0 it sendsCRSandI/J; with 1.1.1 it sendsSRSandX/Y.Answer formats: the request asks for GeoJSON first, then GML, other XML, plain text and HTML. The reader detects the format from the answer itself, so it handles:
layerName/layerBodIdor a GeoServerlayer.fidid)featureMember(s), WFS 2member) and MapServer'smsGMLOutputFeatureInfoResponsename = valuetextA
ServiceExceptionReportis reported as an error. Answers are capped like capabilities (features, attributes, value length, XML nodes).Pop-up:
identifylists the WMS requests infeatureInfo. The app fetches them in the background, and their features join the pop-up (‹ 1 of n ›) as they arrive. While the answers are on their way, the pop-up title reads "Asking the map service…". Errors appear as toasts.Which layers are asked: visible mode asks every WMS layer that is shown (up to 8). Topmost mode asks only the top WMS layer, and only when no feature of the map's own layers is under the click. The selection modes ask none.
New command
identify.featureInfo: reads an answer passed astext. On the command line, MCP and the assistant, it asks the service itself and waits, like theservice.*commands do. It is in theNETWORKlist, so plugins need the network permission to run it.Project format: unchanged
The request lives in a runtime-only field,
#[serde(skip)] TileLayer::feature_info. Its type,ogc::FeatureInfo, already derivesSerialize/Deserialize, so saving it later is a one-attribute change. A WMS layer from a saved project works out its service's GetCapabilities address from the GetMap template it keeps. On the first click it reads the capabilities once, then asks as usual. A test checks that the saved project contains no feature-info data.Tests
rustgis-data(ogc::info): capabilities parsing, including inherited and overriddenqueryable, the DCPType address and no GetFeatureInfo offered; 1.3.0 and 1.1.1 requests; recovering the service from a template; GeoJSON, GML, MapServer, Esri, text and HTML answers; exceptions; hostile input.rustgis-engine(identify_asks_wms_layers):service.addthroughidentifytoidentify.featureInfo; hidden and non-queryable layers aren't asked; a reopened project reads the capabilities first; the selection modes don't ask.wms.geo.admin.ch,ch.bfs.gebaeude_wohnungs_registerat Zürich Bahnhofplatz): the CLI and the app both return the two building entrances there with their GWR attributes.cargo xtask cipasses.cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-webis clean. Not included
