Piece 4a of #882 (labels): what SMV25's labels use most. 129 of its 140 label classes have a 0.5 mm white buffer, and 31 a letter spacing.

What changes

  • Label classes take a halo colour (halo_color), a halo width in points (halo_width, 0–10) and a letter spacing (spacing, −5 to 50 points). All three are optional:
    • no colour is the automatic one, white behind dark text and dark behind light;
    • no width is the thin halo;
    • so existing projects draw, place and save exactly as before (pinned by tests).
    • Damaged values in a project file read as none, or within range.
  • Drawing:
    • A halo of its own width is drawn as QGIS draws a buffer: the letters' coverage spread that far all round, with a smooth edge.
    • It is drawn in one coat, so a see-through halo isn't darker where letters are close.
    • The map view draws it with a bounded number of offset copies, sharing a see-through colour among them.
    • Halo width and spacing grow with the labels at a reference scale.
    • Letter spacing reaches placement, including labels curved along lines.
  • labels.style takes haloColor (""/null: automatic), haloWidth (null: thin) and spacing.
  • Labeling pane › Symbol has Letter spacing, and Halo color and Halo width rows. A colour pick is one undo step, as for the text colour.
  • The MapLibre style export carries the halo colour, width and letter spacing.
  • QGIS importer reads:
    • a label's buffer: colour, opacity, size and units, defaulting to QGIS's 1 mm of white;
    • its letter spacing, in the size's units.
    • It notes non-round corners and blend modes. It used to note halos and letter spacing as approximated or left out.

Tests

  • render:
    • a wide halo reaches its width, in one coat;
    • width 0 draws nothing;
    • the cap follows the text size;
    • spaced letters are set apart;
    • the reference scale grows the halo width and spacing;
    • old labels keep the automatic colour and the thin halo;
    • curved labels keep their spacing.
  • map: lenient serde, and an old label saves as before.
  • engine: labels.style params, undo and errors.
  • importer: SMV25's buffer, units, defaults and notes.
  • UI: the pane rows and the map view's copies.

SMV25

Unchanged where QGIS draws the labels: overview 10.9 %.

At 1 m/px, oldtown goes 6.9 → 8.3 % and forest 3.4 → 4.1 %. QGIS draws no annotation labels at that scale (a known difference, noted when the importer landed). RustGIS still draws them, now with their 0.5 mm halo, so the halo adds to an existing mismatch rather than creating one.

Not in this piece

Label offsets, backgrounds, wrapping and repeating along lines are piece 4b.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Adjust label letter spacing, halo color, and halo width in the labeling pane or through styling commands. Choose automatic contrast or a custom halo color; width and spacing are constrained to supported ranges.
    • Labels render with configured spacing and halos that scale with the label. Imported QGIS labels retain letter spacing and halo color, opacity, and size.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the cartography and workspace guides with label styling controls, supported ranges, and QGIS import details.

After review (137b5c6)

  • An exported halo of its own width spreads by an exact distance transform, so its time grows with the label's area, not its width. It is at most 256 pixels wide (about 64 points at 300 dpi), so a halo grown by a reference scale at a high resolution can't hang an export.
  • A label's collision box grows by its halo's reach, so another label's text doesn't fall under a wide halo.
  • On screen, a wide halo's copies are spread evenly over rings; exports draw it exactly.
  • The MapLibre export writes the halo the map draws (its own colour, else light behind dark text and dark behind light). This changes exported styles: the export used to write a white halo for every label, so light text now gets a dark one there, as on the map.

Limits

  • On a curved label each letter's halo is its own, so a see-through halo is darker where neighbouring letters' halos overlap. Straight labels draw one coat.

…GIS's buffer and spacing

A label class takes a halo colour (none: white or dark, whichever stands out, as before), a halo
width in points (none: the thin halo, as before) and a letter spacing. `labels.style` sets them
(`haloColor`, `haloWidth`, `spacing`), the Labeling pane's Symbol tab shows them, they grow with
the labels at a reference scale, and the MapLibre style export carries them.

A halo of its own width is drawn as QGIS draws a buffer: the letters' coverage spread that far all
round, in one coat. Letter spacing reaches placement, along lines too.

The QGIS importer reads a label's buffer (colour, opacity, size and units; corners other than
round and blend modes noted) and its letter spacing, which it used to note as left out.

Labels without these settings draw, place and save exactly as before.

Walkthrough

Label classes now support configurable halo color, halo width, and letter spacing. Users can set these values through labels.style and the labeling pane, import them from QGIS, and use them in label layout and rendering.

Changes: Label styling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Label settings and QGIS import
crates/map/src/symbology.rs, crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs, crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/workspace.md
Label classes store halo color, halo width, and letter spacing with parsing, validation, and serialization rules. QGIS import converts and retains buffer and spacing settings. Tests cover import values and unsupported-feature notes. The workspace guide describes the imported label properties.
Label style commands and web-style output
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
labels.style sets, clears, and clamps halo and spacing values. Web-style output uses class halo colors, widths, and spacing. Tests cover command validation, undo, and generated halo colors.
Spaced label layout and halo rendering
crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/text.rs, crates/render/src/line_labels.rs, crates/render/src/tiles.rs, crates/render/src/stream_tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs
Label measurements and placement account for spacing. Rendering uses configured or automatic halo colors and widths, and collision boxes include configured halo reach. Labels without an explicit width retain the thin halo. Tests cover spacing, halo reach, rendering, and collision padding.
Labeling pane controls
crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md
The labeling pane adds controls for spacing, halo color, and halo width. The cartography guide documents the settings and command options.

Doc comment is now attached to the wrong item. The new pub use text::halo_reach; sits between /// The image type pages and maps are drawn into. and pub use tiny_skia::Pixmap;, so rustdoc now documents halo_reach with the Pixmap sentence and leaves Pixmap undocumented. Moving the re-export above the doc comment fixes it:

Likely cargo fmt --check failure. rustfmt.toml sets max_width = 140. This line is about 148 columns, and line 348 (Some(_) => Some(Some(f(p, "haloWidth")…) is about 152. CI's fmt gate will reject both as written. Splitting the tuple and the long expression across lines, or naming the bounds separately (e.g. let halo_range = HALO_WIDTH; and a (lo, hi) pair), would fix it and read more clearly than the hw / sp tuple with sp.0 / sp.1. Confidence: medium-high (the widths are from a manual count, not from running rustfmt).

Not a failure: cargo fmt --check passes on these lines, and the Lint (pre-commit) check is green on 3d4f0e0 and on 137b5c6.

The wide-halo copies don't match the doc comment, and the copy count gets too sparse at larger widths. The comment says "rings a point apart", but rings is capped at 4, so for reach > 4 px the rings are reach / 4 apart. Each ring also gets at most 8 copies (MAX_HALO_COATS / rings). At 10 pt (reach ≈ 13 px) the outer ring's copies are ~10 px apart, so the halo breaks into visible ghost copies of the glyphs rather than a smooth edge. The export path (spread) draws a true disc, so the map view and the export will look different at larger widths.

Also, the alpha split (1 - (1-a)^(1/rings)) assumes each pixel is covered once per ring, which the sparse copies don't guarantee.

Options: allow more copies (and accept the per-frame cost), or fix the comment to describe the actual spacing and say the on-screen halo is an approximation of the export's. Confidence: medium.

Fixed in 137b5c6. The map view puts a wide halo's copies on rings about 1.5 points apart and shares the copies among them by length, up to 64 in all, so each ring's copies stand evenly round it. QGIS's usual 0.5 mm buffer comes out solid (gaps well under a pixel, pinned by a test). The comment now says that a very wide halo is approximated on screen and drawn exactly in exports.

The export's automatic halo doesn't match what RustGIS draws. With no halo colour set, this writes #ffffff, but the renderer's automatic halo is dark behind light text (auto_halo). Using the same rule here keeps the MapLibre export in step with the map:

Suggested change
let halo_color = c.halo_color.map_or_else(|| "#ffffff".to_string(), |h| h.hex());
let halo_color = c.halo_color_for(c.color).hex();

Behaviour change: light text exports with a dark halo, as it is drawn in RustGIS. The PR description says the export "carries the halo colour", so please confirm this is intended. Confidence: medium (pre-existing mismatch, but this PR touches the line).

Fixed in 137b5c6: the MapLibre export writes css(c.halo_color_for(c.color)), the halo the map draws. That's its own colour if it has one, else light behind dark text and dark behind light, as rgba() like the export's other colours, see-through included. web_style_carries_the_layers_scale_limits_as_zooms checks all three cases.

Nit: MAX_HALO = 10.0 duplicates the upper bound of symbology::HALO_WIDTH (0..=10). If the cap changes in one place and not the other, the stored width and the drawn width will disagree. Consider const MAX_HALO: f32 = *rustgis_map::symbology::HALO_WIDTH.end() as f32;. Confidence: high (maintainability).

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding code. I could not compile or run tests here, so the fmt finding is from a manual line-width count, not from rustfmt.

Bugs

  • No high-confidence correctness bugs found. Halo and spacing values are clamped on every input path (command, project file, QGIS import), and I found no panic paths in non-test code. (Confidence in this check: medium-high.)
  • Curved labels don't get the one-coat behaviour the PR describes. Each glyph's halo is drawn separately, so a see-through halo darkens where neighbouring letters' halos overlap. The code comment acknowledges this, but the PR body doesn't. (Confidence: medium, Quality.)

Security

  • Nothing found. Inputs are clamped, no new dependencies, no file or network access added.

Performance

  • mapview.rs halo_coats builds a new offset list and draws up to 32 galley copies per wide-halo label on every frame. That is probably fine for typical label counts, but worth measuring on a dense layer. (Confidence: low.)

Quality

  • crates/render/src/lib.rs:120: the new pub use text::halo_reach; takes the doc comment that belonged to pub use tiny_skia::Pixmap;. (Confidence: high.)
  • crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:1335-1345: the doc says "rings a point apart", but the ring count is capped at 4 and each ring at 8 copies. At 10 pt the copies are about 10 px apart, so the on-screen halo will look ghosted compared with the export. (Confidence: medium.)
  • crates/render/src/text.rs:698: MAX_HALO = 10.0 duplicates the HALO_WIDTH upper bound. (Confidence: high, nit.)
  • Nits, grouped:
    • crates/render/src/line_labels.rs:159: the doc line is far longer than the lines around it.
    • crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs:242: the points doc comment ("what's, for the report") reads awkwardly.
    • docs/user-guide/workspace.md: the rewrapped bullets run to about 120 columns, against about 90 elsewhere in the bullet.
    • symbology.rs's lenient helper repeats the untagged-enum pattern of the existing de_font.
    • labelpane.rs: the "Halo color" label isn't associated with its colour button.

AGENTS.md

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:344 and :348: about 148 and 152 columns, over the max_width = 140 in rustfmt.toml, so cargo xtask ci fmt will likely fail. (Confidence: medium-high.)
  • crates/engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs:650: the MapLibre export writes white for an automatic halo, but the renderer draws dark behind light text. Pre-existing, but this PR touches the line. (Confidence: medium.)
  • Checked and fine: no unwrap/expect/indexing in non-test code, interface strings wrapped in tl!, no std::time added, and the labels.style parameter docs match the code.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Set spacing to zero only in the render curved-label path.

line_labels::curved already applies spacing between grapheme positions. In crates/render/src/text.rs, shape emits separate glyphs for the base letter and combining mark, and styled_at adds spacing to each glyph. The mark can therefore be visibly displaced.

egui does not apply extra_letter_spacing within one shaping cluster, so the combining mark in crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs is not displaced. Do not change the egui base label.

… the export's automatic halo as the map's

- An exported halo of its own width spreads by an exact distance transform (Felzenszwalb), so its
time grows with the mask's area, not its width; it is at most 256 pixels wide, so a halo grown
by a reference scale at a high resolution stays within the picture's own memory and time.
- A label's collision box grows by its halo's reach, so another label's text never falls under it.
- The map view spreads a wide halo's copies over rings about 1.5 points apart by their length (at
most 64), so QGIS's usual buffer is solid and a wide one even.
- The MapLibre export writes the halo the map draws: its own colour, else light behind dark text
and dark behind light, as rgba().
- MAX_HALO is HALO_WIDTH's upper bound, and halo_reach's re-export no longer takes Pixmap's doc.
- hostile_params_never_panic sends the new keys; the guide says the width and spacing grow.

Bug (medium confidence): the collision padding grows by the halo's reach even when the class has no halo. PlacedLabel.halo_width is set from class.halo_width regardless of class.halo (see render_frame, ~line 3363), and text::draw only draws a halo when l.halo is Some. So a class with a width set and Halo turned off keeps other labels away from space nothing draws in. The new test only covers halo-on labels.

Suggested fix (gate on the halo being drawn):

Suggested change
let p = l.collide.text_padding.clamp(0.0, 100.0) + l.halo_width.map_or(0.0, |w| text::halo_reach(w, l.size) * 1.33);
let p = l.collide.text_padding.clamp(0.0, 100.0) + l.halo.and(l.halo_width).map_or(0.0, |w| text::halo_reach(w, l.size) * 1.33);

A regression test with halo: None and halo_width: Some(5.0) should assert the box is unchanged.

Fixed in d06890e: the padding grows by the reach only when the halo is drawn (l.halo.and(l.halo_width)). A width kept with the halo turned off reserves nothing, and a_wide_halo_keeps_other_labels_out_of_its_reach now covers that case.

if reach.is_nan() || reach <= 0.0 {
return (Vec::new(), c32(h));

Performance (medium-high confidence): the default imported QGIS buffer (0.5 mm = 1.42 pt) now draws about 63 copies of every label's text per frame in the map view, up from 8. Here reach is about 1.89 px, so rings is 2 and the copy counts are 42 + 21. Every label with a width set pays this on every repaint, and SMV25 has 129 such classes. The "solid" claim in the doc comment holds, but the cost is about 8× the thin path. Consider fewer copies for small reaches, or a cap well below MAX_HALO_COATS for the on-screen path.

Fixed in d06890e: copies sit about a point apart round each ring, with MAX_HALO_COATS (64) only as the ceiling. QGIS's 0.5 mm buffer now takes 18 copies instead of 63, still with gaps of a point or less. The test pins it at 24 or fewer.

Bug (medium confidence): the per-ring alpha only accounts for the rings. Copies within one ring overlap each other, so a pixel near the letters is covered by several copies of the same ring and composites to more than one coat. A see-through halo will therefore be darker where letters are close, which is the artefact the doc comment says this design avoids. The export path (spread in render/text.rs) gets this right; the map view does not. Either document the difference or divide the per-copy alpha by the number of copies that overlap a pixel.

Agreed: copies of the text can't keep a see-through halo to exactly one coat where they overlap near the letters. d06890e makes the comment say so: on screen it is about one coat and a little darker near the letters, and an export draws it exactly (spread). Exact compositing on screen would mean rasterising the halo off the frame, which is a separate change.

Format (high confidence): this line and the haloWidth arm below are over the 140-column max_width in rustfmt.toml, so cargo fmt --check in cargo xtask ci will fail. Splitting the tuple also reads better, since HALO_WIDTH is a range and the letter-spacing bounds are a tuple.

Behaviour change (low-medium confidence, not in the PR description): the export used to write text-halo-color: "#ffffff" for every label. It now writes the automatic colour, so light-coloured text gets a dark halo in the MapLibre style. That matches what the map draws, but the description says existing projects are unchanged, and that is only true for the map. Worth a line in the PR description or the changelog.

Noted in the PR description, under 'After review': the export used to write a white halo for every label, so light text now gets a dark one there, as on the map.

Bugs

  • Collision padding reserves the halo's width even when the class has no halo, so other labels keep clear of space nothing draws in. The new test only covers halo-on labels. Medium confidence. (crates/render/src/lib.rs:4184)
  • The map view's see-through halo copies overlap within a ring, so a see-through halo composites to more than one coat where letters are close. This is the artefact the design says it avoids; the export path gets it right. Medium confidence. (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:1358)
  • The MapLibre export now writes the automatic halo colour, so light-coloured text gets a dark halo. The map already did this, but the export used to write #ffffff for everything, and the description says existing projects are unchanged. Low-medium confidence. (crates/engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs:650)

Security

  • None found. Halo width, halo colour and spacing are clamped or rejected on both the command path and the serde path, and hostile inputs are covered by the new tests. The spread distance transform and the mask allocation are bounded by the label box and the picture size.

Performance

  • The default imported QGIS buffer (1.42 pt) now draws about 63 text copies per label per frame in the map view, up from 8. SMV25 has 129 such classes. High-medium confidence. (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:1341)
  • spaced_block_width shapes each line to count glyphs, on top of the measure it already does, for every spaced label on every frame. Low confidence; a grapheme count may be enough.

Quality

  • layer.rs lines 344 and 348 exceed max_width = 140 in rustfmt.toml, so cargo fmt --check will fail. The (hw, sp) tuple mixes a range and a tuple. High confidence. (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:344)
  • The range clamp x.clamp(*HALO_WIDTH.start(), *HALO_WIDTH.end()) is repeated in several places. Consider a helper.
  • The QGIS importer's halo_color chain of maps is hard to read. A single closure would be clearer.
  • The curved doc comment has a line well over 120 columns, and the points doc comment is awkward ("what's, for the report").
  • In docs/user-guide/workspace.md, the reworded line about approximations runs past the paragraph's wrap width.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, panic, unsafe, or new format! in UI text. New UI strings use tl!. Wasm-relevant code uses no std::time or filesystem access.
  • The hostile-parameter test additions are present. The label_boxes and export halo gating cases above lack regression tests.

I checked the import and layout logic, the distance transform (Edt, spread) against its direct-reading test, the curved-label spacing, and the pane's colour-drag handling. I found no other defects.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Collision boxes reserve halo space when the class halo is off.

halo_width is copied from the class even when class.halo is false. labels.style keeps a stored haloWidth when halo is switched off. In label_boxes (Line 4184), halo_width adds halo_reach * 1.33 to the padding whether or not halo is Some. text::draw draws no halo in that case. The label therefore reserves space for a halo that is never drawn. This can hide neighbouring labels. The web_style export in sharing.rs already treats a disabled halo as width 0, so the two paths disagree.

Set halo_width only when the halo is on.

…alo copies stay few

- Collision boxes grow by a halo's reach only when the halo is drawn (a width kept with the halo
  off reserves nothing).
- The map view puts a halo's copies about a point apart round each ring (64 at most in all), so
QGIS's usual buffer takes about 18 copies, not 63, and stays solid; the comment says a
see-through one is about one coat on screen and exact in exports.
- labels.style's bounds on two lines.

Bug (medium confidence): a halo grown at a reference scale is still cut back. The cap is max(10, size), and the size passed in is already scaled by label_factor, but the 10-point floor is not. The width is also scaled. So a 10 pt halo on 9 pt text at reference scale 2 is requested at 20 pt, while the cap is max(10, 18) = 18, and it is drawn at 18 pt. The comment says a grown halo "isn't cut back", and the new tests only cover widths under 10 pt, so they miss this.

A fix would scale the cap by the same factor (for example, pass the reference factor into halo_reach, or compute the cap from the unscaled size and width before scaling). Please add a test with a 10 pt halo at reference scale 2 on 9 pt text.

Fixed in fb3996f: halo_reach(width) no longer depends on the text's size. A class's own width is already within 0–10 pt on every input path (labels.style, project files, QGIS import, the pane), so the render cap is now 10 pt × SIZE_FACTORS.1 (32), the most a reference scale grows it. A 10 pt halo on 9 pt text at twice the size reaches 20 pt. The drawing is still at most MAX_HALO_PX (256 px) wide, and draw_turned's padding is held to that too, so a small turned label with a grown halo isn't dropped by its 4096 px guard.

/// colour shared among the rings. A halo of a few points (QGIS's usual buffer) is solid with few
/// copies; a very wide one is approximated, and a see-through one is about one coat (copies

Performance (low-medium confidence): wide halos multiply the per-frame draw calls. The thin halo is 8 galley_with_override_text_color calls per label. A halo of its own width can use up to MAX_HALO_COATS (64) copies per label, and halo_coats allocates a new Vec for each label on each frame. On a map with thousands of labelled features that is up to about 64k text draws per frame, and it is not covered by any test.

Worth checking with a large labelled layer. Options include capping the copies lower for on-screen drawing (exports already draw exactly), or caching the offsets per (width, size) pair.

Declining for this PR. Since d06890e the copies are about a point apart round each ring, so QGIS's usual buffer (0.5 mm) takes 18 copies, about twice the thin halo's 8. Only a halo several points wide reaches the 64-copy ceiling, and that bound is what keeps a frame's work in proportion. Caching the offsets per (width, size) would save the small Vec per label, not the text draws, which are the cost. Fewer copies for wide halos would make them visibly ghosted on screen (exports draw them exactly). If a dense layer shows it, rasterising wide halos off the frame is the follow-up.

Code review

Overall the change is well-tested and follows the crash-safety rules: no new non-test unwrap, expect, or unsafe, hostile-parameter cases added, and the new UI strings wrapped in tl!. I found one likely bug and one performance concern, both posted inline. Nothing security-relevant.

Bugs

  • crates/render/src/text.rs:705: the halo cap is max(10, size), applied after the reference scale has already grown the width. A 10 pt halo on 9 pt text at reference scale 2 is requested at 20 pt but drawn at 18 pt, contrary to the stated intent. Confidence: medium. Posted inline.
  • Nit: draw_turned (text.rs:586) uses a closure parameter w that shadows the w bound on the line above.

Security

  • None found. Parsing of haloColor, haloWidth and spacing clamps or rejects bad values, and the lenient deserializers keep damaged project files readable.

Performance

  • crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:1332: a wide halo draws up to 64 text copies per label per frame, against 8 for the thin halo, and allocates a Vec per label per frame. Confidence: low-medium. Posted inline.
  • The halo mask is sized to the label's box (clipped to the picture), and spread allocates several buffers of about 20 bytes per pixel. Fine for normal labels, but a huge label on a high-resolution export could use a lot of memory. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • The 1.33 point-to-pixel factor is repeated across the new code. The existing convention is kept, but a named constant would help.
  • docs/user-guide/workspace.md has one very long wrapped line.
  • The points() doc comment in crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs reads awkwardly.
  • The rustfmt width is 140, so the longer lines are within limits.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the points I checked: wasm-safe APIs, tl! on new labels, docs updated, no new dependencies. The MapLibre export change (auto halo instead of always white) is a visible behaviour change, and the PR body already says so.

- halo_reach holds a width to the most a reference scale grows a class's (10 pt × 32), not to the

Code review

I read the full diff against the base-branch AGENTS.md. Most of the logic checks out: the new fields default to the old behaviour, the QGIS importer's ranges are clamped, f() filters non-finite values so NaN can't reach the label fields, and the hostile-param and round-trip tests cover the new inputs. I found no bugs that change results, and no security concerns: all new inputs are clamped or rejected, and no unwrap, expect, unsafe or non-tl! UI strings were added in non-test code.

Bugs: none confirmed.

  • Low, confidence 40%: draw_turned (text.rs, around line 857) silently skips a rotated label if its padded pixmap exceeds 4096 px. The wider halo padding makes this more likely for long labels at high DPI. A label that is too large is dropped rather than clipped.

Security: none found.

Performance

  • Low, confidence 60%: spaced_line_width calls shape() to count glyphs. It runs every frame for each spaced label, both in placement and in line_width during drawing. Caching the glyph count per label would avoid the repeated shaping.
  • Low, confidence 50%: halo_coats (mapview.rs) can issue up to 64 galley draws per label per frame. This only matters with many wide-halo labels on screen.
  • Low, confidence 40%: spread allocates an f64 per mask pixel. The mask is bounded by the label's box plus the reach, so this is acceptable, but it is worth knowing for very long labels at high DPI.

Quality

  • Nit, confidence 90%: the rustfmt.toml line-length violations are posted inline (layer.rs:349, text.rs:662).
  • Nit: the curved doc comment in line_labels.rs (around lines 724–726) is wrapped unevenly, with one line far longer than the rest.
  • Nit: the docs/user-guide/workspace.md paragraph around its line 1561 has an overlong line that breaks the paragraph's wrapping.
  • Nit: Edt::run in text.rs indexes v, z and out directly. The invariants hold, but this differs from the get()-first style the rest of the file uses.

AGENTS.md

  • Adhered to: the new UI strings are wrapped in tl!, the hostile-params test is extended, the wasm path uses no std::time, and the layering is respected.
  • Behaviour change, already documented in the PR body: MapLibre exports now use the automatic halo colour rather than always white. Light text gets a dark halo in exports, as it already does on the map.

I did not run cargo fmt, the tests or the wasm build. These findings come from reading the staged diff and the surrounding source.

Quality (nit, high confidence): buffer is unwrapped twice in this chain, so the opacity lookup reads awkwardly. The same result in one closure:

Declining as a style nit: the chain reads the colour, then its opacity, as QGIS keeps them in two attributes, and the result is the same either way. Leaving as is.

Performance (medium confidence, about 55%): a label with the default QGIS 0.5 mm buffer (1.42 pt) now gets about 18 copies per frame, against 8 for the thin halo. By my count, halo_coats gives 12 + 6 copies, and each copy is a separate galley or shape call that egui tessellates every frame. halo_coats also allocates a fresh Vec for every label on every frame. Across a map with hundreds of buffered labels that is roughly 2× the text draw calls. Consider computing the offsets once per label (or caching them on PlacedLabel), or lowering the copy budget for small widths. I have not measured this, so please profile on a label-heavy layer before merging.

Answered in the earlier thread on this function: 18 copies for QGIS's 0.5 mm buffer is the cost of a solid halo of that width drawn with copies of the text (the thin halo's 8 copies reach only one point). It is bounded at 64 for any width, and it applies only to labels whose class sets a halo width. Caching the offsets would save the small Vec, not the draws. Rasterising wide halos off the frame is the follow-up if a dense layer shows it.

Code review

I read the full diff, the AGENTS.md copy, and the surrounding code for the changed paths. I could not compile or run the tests (no shell), so everything below is from reading the code.

Bugs

  • None confirmed. I checked the new parameter parsing: f() in crates/engine/src/cmd/mod.rs rejects non-finite values, so "NaN" strings cannot leak into spacing or haloWidth. The serde lenient helpers also filter non-finite values. Curved-label spacing is internally consistent: d advances by the same step that the glyph centres use, and len correctly drops the last gap. Every PlacedLabel and LabelClass literal in the repo was updated for the new fields.

Security

  • None found. No new file or network input paths. Command parameters are range-clamped before use.

Performance

  • Per-frame copies in the map view (medium confidence, about 55%): see the inline comment on crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:1313. The default QGIS buffer goes from 8 to about 18 draw calls per label, rebuilt every frame.
  • Export cost of the distance transform (low confidence, about 30%): spread in crates/render/src/text.rs runs an f64 distance transform over each label's mask, which is the label's box plus the halo reach. For many wide-halo labels at 300 dpi, the time and transient memory could add up. I did not measure this. Caching or a cheaper pass for thin widths would help.
  • Repeated shaping (low confidence): spaced_line_width shapes the line on every call just to count glyphs, and it runs per label per frame for any class with letter spacing.

Quality

  • Redundant buffer unwrapping (nit, high confidence): see the inline suggestion on crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs:192.
  • Overlong doc comments (nit): the curved doc comment in crates/render/src/line_labels.rs (around lines 157–160) runs past rustfmt's max_width = 140 and is wrapped unevenly. docs/user-guide/workspace.md has one run-on line in the QGIS-approximations paragraph, around lines 99–101, that breaks the wrap used elsewhere.
  • Import placement (nit): pub use text::halo_reach; in crates/render/src/lib.rs sits between the use block and the doc comment for pub use tiny_skia::Pixmap. Moving it would keep the import block contiguous.
  • halo_for wrapper (nit): halo_for in crates/render/src/lib.rs now just forwards to auto_halo. Either inline it or keep it, but be consistent.

AGENTS.md

  • Never-crash rules hold: every unwrap/expect the diff adds is inside test code. hostile_params_never_panic gained the new junk cases, and the QGIS importer clamps sizes.
  • Translation rules hold: all new pane labels use tl!. The " pt" suffix matches the existing pane code.
  • Layering and wasm: no new egui/std::time use below L6, and halo_coats and Edt use plain f32/f64.
  • Indexing in Edt::run: it uses direct indexing (v[k], z[k], f[p]). This is internal and bounded by construction, so it does not break the get() rule, which targets file and command input. Noting it only.

…ixel cap only in drawing

Labels are placed once for every pixel density they are drawn at, so the collision box keeps the
halo's whole reach; only drawing holds a halo to MAX_HALO_PX pixels (a turned label's picture by
its pixel density), so below a pixel a point it is neither cropped nor crowded.

Performance (medium confidence): when spacing != 0, spaced_line_width calls shape() on every line just to count glyphs. That is uncached, unlike measure(), and it runs on every width query: placement offsets, label_boxes, and draw_upright's widths, so roughly two to three shapes per spaced label per frame. The PR's own QGIS import sets spacing on 31 SMV25 classes, so this is the path real projects will hit. Consider caching the glyph count with the existing widths::Cache (keyed by text, size and face), or reusing the shaping result already computed for the draw. Also note the straight branch counts shaped glyphs while the curved branch counts graphemes, so the two can disagree for ligatures and decomposed accents.

Fixed in 88120c7: a line's glyphs are counted once per line and face in a small bounded cache (letters_of), not by shaping on every width query. A size doesn't change the count. spaced_widths_count_the_letters_once checks the count and that spaced widths are as before.

Quality (medium confidence): this doc says advances and gap are in points, but the caller in lib.rs passes spacing * 1.33, and advances come from measure_in, which the existing spaced_line_width uses in the same units as spacing * 1.33 * ppp. The units are the label's, not points. Code review

Bugs

  • No definite functional bug found. The halo mask offsets, the distance-transform clipping and the collision padding check out by reading. Each test pins a case I could reason through.
  • Low confidence: straight labels count shaped glyphs for letter gaps, while curved labels count graphemes. Ligatures and decomposed accents would then get a different number of gaps on a straight label than on a curved one. Not verified by running.

Security

  • Nothing found. Hostile values are handled: f() drops non-finite numbers, de_* deserializers clamp or drop bad values, the render path has a pixel cap, and no unwrap is added in non-test code.

Performance

  • Medium confidence: spaced_line_width (text.rs:397) shapes text uncached on every width query for any label with letter spacing. The QGIS import sets spacing on 31 SMV25 classes, so real projects hit this. Inline comment posted.
  • Low confidence: mapview.rs:1347 draws up to 64 copies per label per frame, including zero-alpha halos. Inline comment posted with a one-line filter.

Quality

  • High confidence: layer.rs:349 is over rustfmt's 140-column limit, so the fmt gate fails. Inline comment with a wrap suggestion posted.
  • Medium confidence: the curved() doc (line_labels.rs:157) says points, but the caller passes label units. Inline comment posted.
  • Nits, not posted inline:
    • workspace.md has an overlong line (about 130 columns) in the imports paragraph.
    • The line_labels.rs doc block has several lines over 100 columns.
    • "Halo color" in labelpane.rs is not labelled_by its colour button, which weakens screen-reader labelling.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the points I checked: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, tl! wraps the new pane strings, the hostile_params_never_panic harness is extended, no assets or dependencies change, and the layering holds.

Bug (medium confidence): the clamp is silent. A QGIS buffer wider than 10 pt (about 3.5 mm) is drawn at 10 pt with no note, unlike the other approximations in this importer, so the import report says nothing about it. Letter spacing is clamped the same way at line 238.

Valid. A buffer wider than 10 pt, or letter spacing outside −5 to 50 pt, is clamped with no note in the import report. This merged before I could act on it, so it's noted for a follow-up: add both to the importer's notes.

Quality (high confidence): this duplicates in_points in crates/map/src/qgis/mod.rs (line 592), which already converts QGIS lengths to points and takes the layer's reference scale for map units. The new points has the same name in the same module tree but different semantics: typographic points (72/in) here, 96-dpi pixels there, and it ignores the reference scale. Two helpers with one name and different units will be confused later. Consider a shared helper with a unit/reference parameter, or at least a different name.

Fair. This merged before I could act on it. Noted for a follow-up: fold the typographic conversion into in_points, or rename it, so the module doesn't have two points-style helpers with different meanings.

Performance (medium confidence): this runs every frame for every label with a wide halo. It allocates a fresh Vec and calls sin_cos for each copy, and draw_label_ink then adds up to 64 text shapes per label per line, against 8 for the thin halo. A map with a few thousand labels and a 10 pt halo means about 8× the text shapes per frame. Consider caching the offsets per (width, colour), or capping the copies lower on screen.

Also, the doc comment says the rings are "about 1.5 points apart", but clamp(1, 6) makes them wider than that once the reach exceeds 9 pt. Either the comment or the cap should change.

Answered in the earlier threads on halo_coats: it is bounded at 64 copies for any width, and QGIS's usual buffer takes 18. Rasterising wide halos off the frame is the follow-up if a dense layer shows a cost.

Quality / memory (low-medium confidence): the process-wide cache is keyed by the full line text, with no length limit. Label text comes from project and feature data, so a single very long line can be kept in up to 4096 entries before the cache is cleared. Those keys are retained even though a long line is rarely repeated. Consider skipping the cache for long lines, for example above 256 characters, and recomputing them.

The cache also adds process-global mutable state to the render path. The other caches in this crate are fine, but this one caches a result that is cheap to compute, so it may not be worth the lock per label per frame.

Valid. This merged before I could act on it. Noted for a follow-up: cache only lines of bounded length (a long line is counted directly), so feature data can't keep long keys in the cache.

Code review

Bugs

  • The QGIS importer clamps buffer width (above 10 pt) and letter spacing (outside −5…50 pt) without a note, so the import report omits them. Inline at crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs:195. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • Nothing found. The new numeric parameters go through f(), which rejects non-finite values, and colours go through the existing hex parser. Serde lenient handles damaged project values.

Performance

  • halo_coats (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:1395) allocates and computes sin/cos per label per frame, and wide halos draw up to 64 text shapes per label against 8 before. Confidence: medium.
  • The letters_of cache (crates/render/src/text.rs:410) is keyed by full line text with no length limit. Confidence: low-medium.
  • spread (text.rs) allocates f64 per mask pixel, and each label gets its own mask. For a long label with a 256 px halo that is tens of MB transient during export. Bounded, so low.

Quality

  • A second points helper in qgis/labels.rs:243 duplicates in_points in qgis/mod.rs:592 with different units and no reference-scale support. Inline. Confidence: high.
  • The halo_coats doc says rings are "about 1.5 pt apart", but the 6-ring cap makes them wider above about 9 pt. Inline with the performance comment.
  • Nits, not posted inline:
    • The line_labels.rs doc comment for curved has ragged wrapping, and one line runs past 100 columns.
    • docs/user-guide/workspace.md has one unwrapped line of about 130 columns.
    • pub use text::halo_reach; in render/src/lib.rs:119 sits among the use items instead of with the other re-exports.
    • layer.rs names the spacing range sp (a tuple) while the halo range is hw (a RangeInclusive).

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe in non-test code. Tests and hostile-parameter entries were added. Interface strings use tl!. Docs and the MapLibre export are updated.
  • Minor: Edt::run and spread index slices directly (f[p], v[k], z[k], out[q]). The indices are in range by construction, so this is only a style note against the get-over-indexing rule.
  • Nothing was built or run. I could not run cargo xtask ci, so compile, fmt and clippy are unverified.

Minor · Set spacing to 0 on curved labels that carry glyphs. · lib.rs:3369

crates/render/src/lib.rs:3369
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Set spacing to 0 on curved labels that carry glyphs.

For a curved label, curved() already places each character with the gap between characters. draw then copies spacing into each per-character label through ..l.clone(). Each of those labels draws one grapheme.

A grapheme can hold more than one code point, for example a decomposed accent such as o + U+0302. text::shape iterates chars(), and styled_at offsets each shaped glyph by spacing * i. The accent then moves away from its base letter by spacing. The map view passes the same spacing to label_job as extra_letter_spacing.

Before this change, spacing was forced to 0, so the defect is new. QGIS imports can set spacing on many classes. This case affects curved labels with decomposed text and non-zero spacing.

Do not carry spacing into a label that has glyphs. The positions already include the gap.

Proposed fix
- spacing,
+ // A curved label's characters are already spaced apart in `glyphs`.
+                                spacing: if glyphs.is_empty() { spacing } else { 0.0 },

glyphs is moved into the struct on the next line. If the borrow checker complains, compute let spacing_on_label = if glyphs.is_empty() { spacing } else { 0.0 }; before building PlacedLabel.

Review comment at @crates/render/src/lib.rs at line 3369:
When constructing the curved label’s per-character `PlacedLabel` in `draw`, set
`spacing` to zero when `glyphs` is non-empty, since glyph positions already
include the gap. Preserve the existing spacing for labels without glyphs, and
determine the value before moving `glyphs` into the struct if needed.

…GIS's buffer and spacing (opengeos#964)

* feat(labels): a halo's own colour and width, and letter spacing, as QGIS's buffer and spacing

* fix(labels): halos drawn in linear time and kept out of other labels, the export's automatic halo as the map's

* fix(labels): a halo turned off reserves no room, and the map view's halo copies stay few

* fix(labels): a halo grown at a reference scale isn't cut back, and a see-through one reserves no room

- halo_reach holds a width to the most a reference scale grows a class's (10 pt × 32), not to the
text's size: a 10 pt halo on 9 pt text at twice the size reaches 20 pt, as its class asks.
- A fully see-through halo, which draws nothing, doesn't grow the collision box.

* fix(labels): collision and turned-label room only for a halo that is drawn, at most as wide as it is drawn

* fix(labels): collision boxes reserve the halo a class asks for, the pixel cap only in drawing

Labels are placed once for every pixel density they are drawn at, so the collision box keeps the
halo's whole reach; only drawing holds a halo to MAX_HALO_PX pixels (a turned label's picture by
its pixel density), so below a pixel a point it is neither cropped nor crowded.

* fix(labels): a spaced line's letters counted once, no copies for a see-through halo on screen

- spaced_line_width counts a line's glyphs once per line and face (a bounded cache), not by
shaping it on every width query.
- The map view draws no halo copies when the halo is fully see-through, as render reserves none.
- curved()'s doc gives its units (the label's, points × 1.33); labels.style's haloWidth on lines.
