Why

The desktop app currently packages with Potassium and runs its windows on AWT. This stack moves it to Nucleus 3.0: packaging and updates, Tao windows with no AWT in the process, and an experimental GraalVM native image. It then brings back detached game windows. The Tao move had disabled them, because compose-docking 0.3 floated windows in AWT windows. compose-docking 0.4.0 lets the application open each floating window itself.

What

Commits, oldest first:

  1. Packaging and updates → Nucleus 3.0 (b64e22cf, 71e16b1e). The nucleus { } setup replaces potassium { }, covering NSIS, DMG and Zip, Deb, AppImage and Tar, signing and notarization, and the update manifests. ChannelUpdater now runs on nucleus.updater-runtime.
  2. Tao windows and a native image (experiment) (d1a839ee, cda4e5e3, b90f3001). This runs under nucleusApplication with Nucleus's Tao DecoratedWindow/DecoratedDialog, styled from the Jewel theme (WarlockWindowChrome). AWT-only helpers move to their Tao equivalents. Every OS gets popup menus in the title bar. It adds a graalvm { } build, using tracing-agent metadata in META-INF/native-image. The workarounds for the static metadata analysis were dropped once Nucleus#861 and #862 landed.
  3. Detached windows on Tao (14481adc). This updates compose-docking to 0.4.0 and removes the floating-window gate. NucleusDocking.kt answers the library's window API with Nucleus windows. It is adapted from compose-docking's Tao demo:
    • where windows can be placed, drags use screen coordinates;
    • on native Wayland, drags ride the platform's drag-and-drop session through Nucleus's transfer-drag API (Nucleus#863).
  4. One title bar for detached windows (9fa2af4d).
    • A detached window holding one game window drops that window's panel header. Its window menu moves up into the title bar.
    • The window buttons follow the desktop's layout: GNOME's button-layout through Nucleus (followed live), the traffic lights on macOS, the caption buttons on Windows. Maximize works.
    • On native Wayland the bar splits the way Nucleus's floating satellites do. A grip chip docks the window, and the rest of the bar hands the move to the compositor.
    • Nucleus goes to 3.0.0-dev-202610230652.
  5. Removals (87f145eb). The memory usage dialog and its plumbing are removed. It was added to chase a leak and never found it, and its heap dump would need extra native-image build flags. The per-stream usage count stays, because the text-stream tests use it. The -Pzgc switch is dropped too.
  6. Benchmark build fix (7bc7ab80). The JMH source set, which check doesn't compile, now passes the SettingsProblems that ClientSettingRepository takes.

Risks

  • Nucleus 3.0 is a dev snapshot (3.0.0-dev-*), not a release.
  • Native Wayland can't move the real window and dock it in one drag. No client can place its windows or see the pointer outside them, so docking shows a drag icon instead of the window. Fixing that needs xdg-toplevel-drag-v1, which GTK 3 has no API for yet.
  • The native image is not shipped. Releases still build the JVM distributions, and CI has no native job. The tracing-agent metadata was recorded on the connect-and-stream path only, but the paths tested below work without more of it.

Testing

  • ./gradlew check -PiosSkip=true --continue passes.
  • :desktopApp:createDistributable, then warlock --version, exits 0.
  • By hand on GNOME 50 (native Wayland), replaying a Wrayth log:
    • detaching and docking back;
    • moving a detached window by its bar;
    • the window menu, minimize, maximize and close in the title bar;
    • the buttons follow button-layout.
  • The native image on Linux (createGraalvmNativeDistributable, built as version 3.1.0 so the update check and Sentry start):
    • warlock --version exits 0;
    • replaying a Wrayth log, including the detached windows;
    • a fake telnet MUD sends a Lua script over GMCP Client.GUI. The script's commands and its onLine/onGmcp handlers all reach the server, over plain telnet and over TLS with a self-signed cert trusted through -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStore;
    • by hand: player Lua and WSL scripts, the settings dialogs, the file pickers (through the XDG portal), and the update check.
  • Not tested: X11, Windows and macOS by hand (including macOS's left-side controls), and a release build through CI. Nor, in the native image: Sentry sending a crash report (the app has no way to trigger one), the updater downloading and installing, an export or import writing files, or the SGE login.

Potassium began as a fork of Nucleus; Nucleus 3.0 now carries the features
Warlock relied on the fork for (Azure Trusted Signing, GitHub release
channels, AppImageIntegration, cleanupNativeLibs, notarization).

- potassium { } becomes nucleus.application { nativeDistributions { } };
  formats are one list, with Zip/Tar added only on macOS/Linux.
- Read the app version from NucleusApp.version: Nucleus writes it to the
  generated app properties instead of a -Dapp.version system property.
- Keep -Dawt.app.id=warlock, which Potassium's launcher added and Nucleus's
  does not, so Wayland desktops still match the window to its launcher.
- Packages land in build/compose/binaries; the release workflow uses the
  Nucleus composite actions, installs JBR 25 itself (setup-nucleus installs
  Temurin), and merges per-arch manifests with generate-update-yml.
- Republish the merged Linux manifest as <channel>-linux-arm64.yml so arm64
  installs still on the Potassium updater keep finding updates.

Runs the desktop app under nucleusApplication with Nucleus's Tao-backed
DecoratedWindow/DecoratedDialog, styled from the Jewel theme
(WarlockWindowChrome), and builds it as a GraalVM native image.

- WarlockDialog and the settings dialog open Tao dialogs through the
  application scope; Main's windows and dialogs move off Compose's AWT ones.
- AWT-only helpers move to Tao equivalents: TaoPointerIcons for cursors, the
  platform opener for URLs. The macOS native menu bar (AWT) is gone, so every
  OS gets the title-bar popup menus.
- Game windows no longer float: compose-docking opens floating windows as
  AWT windows (hostSupportsFloatingWindows = false on the JVM).
- kotlinx-coroutines-swing is dropped; Tao provides Dispatchers.Main.
- graalvm { } on the 25.0 LTS toolchain with all charsets (windows-1252),
  tracing-agent metadata in src/main/resources/META-INF/native-image, and a
  post-processing step for two static-analysis bugs (LWJGL multi-release
  Upcalls.shutdown, Mordant C-interop classes registered for JNI).

NucleusFramework/Nucleus#861 (multi-release JARs) and #862 (C interop natives)
fix the static metadata analysis this branch patched up after the fact, and
the GraalVM 25.4 failure the LTS pin avoided was the Mordant entries, not 25.4.
The image builds and runs on the default toolchain (GraalVM CE 25.4.4) with
neither.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
compose-docking 0.4.0 lets the application emit each floating window
itself, so game windows can float again on Tao instead of staying
docked. The Tao branch's floating-window gate is gone.

The docking library's window API is answered by Nucleus windows in
NucleusDocking.kt, adapted from compose-docking's Tao demo: screen
coordinates where windows can be placed, and on native Wayland the
platform's drag-and-drop session.

Detached windows are undecorated and draw their own title bar in the
main window's colours, with buttons to dock back, minimize and close.
Where windows can be placed, dragging that bar is a docking drag, so
letting go over a dock area docks the window there. On native Wayland
the compositor moves the window instead.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A detached window holding one game window no longer draws that
window's panel header under its title bar. The header's window menu
moves up into the bar. "Reattach window", "Maximize" and the close
button are left out there, because the bar already has dock, maximize
and close buttons.

The window buttons are the ones the OS would draw, on its side: GNOME's
button-layout through Nucleus's rememberLinuxButtonLayout (followed
live), the traffic lights' order on macOS, and caption order on
Windows. Maximize now resizes the window.

On native Wayland, the title bar splits the way Nucleus's floating
satellites do. A chip with a grip glyph drags the window into a dock
through the platform's drag-and-drop session. The rest of the bar
hands the move to the compositor. The chip is only as wide as its
title, at most half of the free space.

Also updates Nucleus to 3.0.0-dev-202610230652.

The dialog was added to chase a memory leak and never helped find it.
Its heap dump also needs a JVM feature a native image only has with
extra build flags. This removes the dialog, its Help menu item and the
registry and view-model plumbing that fed it. The per-stream usage
count stays, because the text stream tests use it to check that the
buffer stays bounded.

Also drops the -Pzgc switch from the desktop run and the benchmarks,
an experiment that did not pan out.

ClientSettingRepository gained a settingsProblems parameter, and the

Move the release workflow's action refs to the same version, since CI

Use the normalized tag for manual releases.

When workflow_dispatch runs from a branch, GITHUB_REF_NAME is the branch name. The build job writes the latest tag to its own GITHUB_ENV, but that value is available only within the build job. This publish job therefore can set VERSION to main or another branch name. The generated update manifest then carries an invalid release version, and the publish action receives the same incorrect tag. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Pass the normalized tag as a job output, or normalize it again in this job after checking out the full tag history.

Only open http and https URLs from the game server: the platform openers
launch whatever they are given. Route Escape from the main window to the
docking system. Give detached title bars double-click to maximize, and
hand a maximized window's drag to the window manager so it restores under
the pointer.

Remove what the memory dialog and AWT windows left behind: the stream
memory accounting, jdk.management, -Dawt.app.id, two unused catalog

On workflow_dispatch the publish job took the branch name as the release
tag, because the build job's normalized version stays in that job's own
environment. Resolve it the same way here.

Stop uploading signing-metadata.json and packaging-metadata.json. The
update manifest generator treats every file it finds as an installer, so
one of these could become a manifest's primary download.

Require manual runs to target a release tag.

A manual run can target a branch. If that branch has commits after its nearest tag, the build job packages newer code while git describe --tags --abbrev=0 resolves RELEASE_VERSION to the older tag. The publish job now resolves the same tag and passes it to the Nucleus action, which uses --clobber for an existing release.

The build and Android normalization existed before this PR, but the publish-job normalization and Nucleus upload path make the existing-release overwrite possible here. Reject manual runs unless they target a tag, and apply the same check to the build and Android jobs.

Review comment at @.github/workflows/release.yaml at line 252:

other trigger types, and keep the tag used by git describe aligned with the code
being packaged.
