Dev Engineer Review

  • reframe_openai_stream holds the Anthropic closing frames after [DONE] until it reads the upstream stream to EOF. It drops later upstream content. If the read fails, it logs the failure and emits the held closing frames. A stream without [DONE] remains an incomplete-response error.
  • The chat stream catches Exception rather than using a bare except, so GeneratorExit and cancellation are not logged as stream errors. Real exceptions are logged and re-raised.
  • Current review findings and test execution results are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

  • Modified tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_adapter.py and tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_routes.py. Both appear in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. No manual-QA list entry was found.
  • Adapter tests cover SSE reassembly, upstream reads through EOF after [DONE], ordering of message_stop, discarded post-[DONE] content, upstream failures, split byte chunks, multibyte characters, and malformed chunks.
  • Route tests cover metrics after full stream consumption, consumer closure, disconnect cancellation, and logging and re-raising a generation failure.
  • Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described stream and error-handling changes. Test execution status is unavailable.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/serve/anthropic_adapter.py: Verify that [DONE] ends the client-visible Anthropic message while upstream reading continues through EOF. Verify the missing-[DONE] and post-[DONE] failure paths.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_server.py: Verify that real stream failures are logged and re-raised, while consumer closure and disconnect cancellation do not produce error logs.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_adapter.py: Covers reframing, upstream draining, post-[DONE] failures, split chunks, and malformed input. Listed in the CI test database list.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_routes.py: Covers metrics recording and chat-stream closure, cancellation, and failure handling. Listed in the CI test database list.

Description

A streamed /v1/messages request is served by the chat stream and reframed into Anthropic events by reframe_openai_stream. The reframer stopped reading at [DONE], so the chat stream stayed suspended at its last yield and was then closed with GeneratorExit. Two things followed:

  • The code the chat stream runs after [DONE] never ran. _extract_metrics records the request's perf metrics and its Prometheus request metrics, so every streamed Messages request, which means every Claude Code turn, was missing from both.
  • The chat stream's bare except: logged the GeneratorExit as an error traceback, once per request.

This PR fixes both:

  • The reframer still finishes the Anthropic stream at [DONE], then reads the upstream to its end and drops anything after [DONE]. A byte stream relayed from a disaggregated worker likewise ends at the worker's EOF.
  • The chat stream logs only Exceptions. A consumer that stops reading (GeneratorExit) or a client that disconnects (CancelledError) is not an error of the stream.

Test Coverage

tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_adapter.py (CPU, already in l0_cpu.yml) gains two tests:

  • the reframer reads the upstream past [DONE], so the producer's post-[DONE] code runs; this test fails on main;
  • lines after [DONE] are read but never reframed.

End to end: an A/B on one GB300 node with Qwen3-30B-A3B and the pi coding agent 1.4.0 over Anthropic Messages, both sides from the same precompiled CI build with per-request metrics on:

Without this change With it
Streamed /v1/messages requests 17 17
GeneratorExit tracebacks in the server log 17 0
Per-request metric records written 0 17

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…s metrics are recorded

A streamed /v1/messages request is served by the chat stream and reframed
into Anthropic events. The reframer stopped reading at [DONE], so the chat
stream stayed suspended at its last yield and was closed with GeneratorExit:
the code it runs after [DONE], which records the request's metrics
(perf metrics and the Prometheus request metrics), never ran, and its bare
`except:` logged the GeneratorExit as an error traceback. Every streamed
Messages request (every Claude Code turn) was missing from the metrics and
logged a traceback.

The reframer now finishes the Anthropic stream at [DONE] as before and then
reads the upstream to its end, dropping anything after [DONE]. A relayed byte
stream from a disaggregated worker likewise ends at the worker's EOF. The
chat stream logs only exceptions: a consumer that stops reading
(GeneratorExit) or a client that disconnects (CancelledError) is not an error
of the stream.

Walkthrough

The Anthropic stream adapter saves its closing frames at [DONE], reads the upstream stream through EOF, and ignores later content. The chat stream generator now catches Exception rather than all exceptions.

Add a regression test for stream closure and cancellation.

The changed chat_stream_generator handler must not log GeneratorExit or asyncio.CancelledError as stream failures. Add an OpenAIServer test under tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/ that starts the stream, closes the consumer, and asserts that logger.error is not called with a traceback. Exercise task cancellation in the same setup.

Add a byte-stream regression for post-[DONE] draining.

The cleanup test uses string payloads and does not exercise _iter_openai_sse_lines's byte path. Existing byte tests stop at [DONE] and do not assert producer work after it. A pre-fix early return would pass those tests. Add a byte source that splits [DONE] across chunks and asserts that code after the final byte chunk runs.

…the drain fails

Once [DONE] has been reframed into message_stop the message is closed, so a
failure while reading the rest of the upstream is logged and the stream ends
without an error event after message_stop.

Tests: the upstream failing after [DONE], a byte stream whose [DONE] spans
two chunks being read to its end, and the chat stream behind /v1/messages
recording its metrics when read to its end, logging nothing when its consumer
closes it or a disconnect cancels it, and still logging a real failure.

@coderabbitai On the two nitpicks in your review:

  • Chat stream closure and cancellation: added in 9b00deb to test_anthropic_routes.py. The tests drive the real openai_chat streaming handler with rendering and the engine stubbed. They check four cases: a stream read to its end records its metrics; a consumer that closes it (GeneratorExit) logs no error; a disconnect that cancels it (CancelledError) logs no error; and a real failure is still logged and raised. The closure and cancellation tests fail on the bare except:.
  • [DONE] split across byte chunks: added test_stream_reframer_reads_a_byte_stream_to_its_end_when_done_is_split. It splits [DONE] across two byte chunks and asserts that the producer runs after the final chunk. It fails on the code before this PR.

@JunyiXu-nv Thanks. I inspected the added tests. They cover both review concerns:

  • The route tests call the real openai_chat handler. They check that full consumption awaits _extract_metrics, closure and cancellation do not log errors, and a real failure is logged and raised.
  • The byte-stream test splits [DONE] after [DO and checks that the producer resumes after the final chunk. This checks consumption through EOF, not just frame reconstruction.

The added coverage addresses both nitpicks. I did not run the tests or independently verify the reported failures on the pre-PR code.

A stream that failed before its first frame would leave the test waiting
forever; it now fails after five seconds.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Buffer terminal frames until the upstream stream ends.

reframer.finish() includes message_stop, but the current loop yields it before reading the next upstream item. If the consumer closes after message_stop, chat_stream_generator remains suspended at its [DONE] yield and does not reach _extract_metrics. Store the terminal frames, drain the upstream stream, then yield them. Flush the stored frames if post-[DONE] draining raises, preserving the current terminal response behavior.

…eam has ended

The frames that close the message (message_delta and message_stop) are now
held from [DONE] until the upstream has been read to its end. A client may
disconnect as soon as it has message_stop; had message_stop gone out first,
the chat stream would be left suspended at [DONE] and its metrics never
recorded. If reading past [DONE] fails, the failure is logged and the
message still closes.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment about anthropic_adapter.py lines 1081-1093 (buffer the terminal frames): agreed, done in 5bc273a. reframer.finish() output is now held from [DONE] and yielded only once the upstream has been read to its end. If reading past [DONE] fails, the failure is logged and the held frames still go out, so message_stop remains the last event. test_stream_reframer_reads_the_upstream_to_its_end_before_message_stop reads until message_stop, closes the stream, and asserts the upstream ran past [DONE]; it fails on the previous adapter.

@JunyiXu-nv Thanks. I inspected the updated adapter and regression test.

  • reframer.finish() output is buffered at [DONE] and emitted after upstream EOF. If draining raises a general Exception, the adapter logs the failure and emits the buffered closing frames.
  • test_stream_reframer_reads_the_upstream_to_its_end_before_message_stop stops at message_stop, closes the stream, and checks that the producer ran past [DONE].

This addresses the terminal-frame buffering concern. I did not run the test or independently verify its failure on the previous adapter.
