fix(docker): base component images on their exact build release - #245
A MySQL component works only on the exact release it was built against. In the dry-run publish for #244 (run 41190212886), a component_mcp_guard built for 8.4.8 crashed mysql:8.4 (8.4.11) with signal 11 at its first refusal. The same build works on mysql:8.4.8, and I reproduced both results locally.
The MyVector component images had the same pairing: built for mysql-8.4.8 / mysql-9.7.0, but based on the floating mysql:8.4 / mysql:9.7. Their smoke tests pass today, but nothing guarantees that.
What
docker-publish.yml (component job):
Builds for 8.4.13, 9.7.4 and 26.10.0, the releases the floating tags point to today, so pinning doesn't move users to an older server.
Bases each image on mysql:<that release>.
Also tags each image with its release: mysql8.4.13-component, mysql9.7.4-component, mysql26.10.0. The existing tags (mysql8.4-component, mysql9.7-component, mysql26.10) move to these releases.
The artifact smoke test (smoke-component.sh) runs on the same release.
Dockerfile.component: MYSQL_VERSION is required (no default).
docs/DOCKER_IMAGES.md, CHANGELOG.
The plugin images (build-and-publish: built for 8.0.45/8.4.8/9.7.0, based on floating mysql:8.0/8.4/9.7) have the same issue but aren't changed here. That's a separate decision.
Verification
A dry_run dispatch of docker-publish.yml on this branch builds, smoke-tests and runs the README examples for all three images without pushing. The run is linked below.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Component Docker images are now available with release-specific tags for MySQL 8.4.11, 9.7.2, and 26.10.0, alongside existing tags.
Each image is built and smoke-tested against its matching exact MySQL release.
Documentation
Docker image guidance now explains release-specific compatibility and tagging.
Changes
Building a component image now requires specifying its MySQL release.
Update
Moved to 8.4.13 / 9.7.4, the releases mysql:8.4 / mysql:9.7 point to today.
The first dry run (41212507043) failed while configuring mysql-9.7.4. Like 26.10, 9.7.4 builds WebAuthn by default and needs libudev/libfido2 headers the build container doesn't have. build-component-9.7-docker.sh now passes -DWITH_AUTHENTICATION_WEBAUTHN=OFF, as the 26.10 script does. 8.4.13 and 26.10.0 passed.
A component works only on the MySQL release it was built against: a
component_mcp_guard built for 8.4.8 crashed mysql:8.4 (8.4.11) in the #244 dry
run. The component images were built for 8.4.8 / 9.7.0 but based on the floating
mysql:8.4 / mysql:9.7.
- docker-publish.yml: build the component for 8.4.11, 9.7.2, 26.10.0, base each
image on mysql:<that release>, also tag it with the release
(mysql8.4.11-component, mysql9.7.2-component, mysql26.10.0), and run the
artifact smoke test on the same release.
- Dockerfile.component: MYSQL_VERSION is required (no default).
- docs/DOCKER_IMAGES.md, CHANGELOG.

Walkthrough
Component image builds and smoke tests now use exact MySQL release versions. The workflow publishes both existing mutable tags and release-specific tags. The Dockerfile requires a MySQL release as a build argument.

Summary
Exact-release build and publish Dockerfile.component, .github/workflows/docker-publish.yml, docs/DOCKER_IMAGES.md, CHANGELOG.md
The Dockerfile requires MYSQL_VERSION. The workflow uses exact releases for the component matrix, smoke tests, and image builds, and pushes release-specific tags alongside existing tags. The documentation and changelog describe the release matching and tagging.
The published paths are aligned, but the local movie-finder build still uses mismatched MySQL releases and should be corrected before relying on that example.

The floating mysql:8.4 and mysql:9.7 tags have moved to 8.4.13 and 9.7.4;
build and base the component images on those, so pinning does not move users
to an older server.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The example built the component for mysql-9.7.0 and the image FROM the floating
mysql:9.7; use 9.7.4 for both (CodeRabbit, #245).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The dry run of #245 failed configuring mysql-9.7.4: like 26.10, 9.7.4 builds the
WebAuthn plugin by default and needs libudev/libfido2 headers the build container
lacks. Turn it off as build-component-26.10-docker.sh does; the component build
needs only generated headers.

Resolve docker-publish.yml: the mysql-mcp image steps use matrix.mysql-release
like the component image, instead of deriving the release from mysql-tag; the
mysql-mcp examples name 8.4.13.
