fix(mcp-guard): guard sessions opened by components (RFC 0001 Phase 4, Q4) - #252
First Phase 4 deliverable of RFC 0001. It answers open question 4, the Phase 4 exit criterion: does the guard see the impersonated "local" sessions that component_mcp will run tools in?
Finding: it didn't
component_mcp will run SQL through the command services, on its own threads, in a "local" session that impersonates the caller's account (MYSQL_COMMAND_USER_NAME / HOST_NAME). component_mysql_rest_service does the same. On 9.7.2 and 26.10.0, such a session for an MCP_USER account wrote to tables, read mysql.user and ran without the time limit: the guard never saw it. There were two causes:
No connection event. The session opens with srv_session_open_internal and switches account with security_context lookup(). The guard marks MCP sessions on the connection event, so it never marked these.
Unaudited sessions. The Srv_session constructor sets m_audited = false, so no events (connection, query or table access) reach any audit consumer. mysql_audit_api_connection->emit(thd, CONNECT) turns auditing back on (mysql_audit_enable_auditing). MRS never calls it, so MRS's SQL is invisible to audit plugins too.
Other facts recorded for component_mcp:
Locked accounts can be impersonated. It must check account_locked itself.
max_user_connections isn't enforced for these sessions, so it needs its own per-account cap.
The session's THD is current only while a statement runs. Read it from the handle (Mysql_handle->mysql->thd), as MRS does.
sql_error() copies into a caller buffer before 26.10. Passing a null pointer crashes 8.4.
Fix (guard)
Classify at the first statement. A session not yet classified gets its status from its privileges at its first query or table-access event. A "not MCP" marker keeps the cost at one grant check per session. An MCP session that can't be marked is refused.
mcp.sessions_connected is decremented when the THD ends (the slot's free callback), which covers sessions with no disconnect event.
Docs: a component that runs SQL for MCP accounts must emit MYSQL_AUDIT_CONNECTION_CONNECT / DISCONNECT for its sessions. component_mcp will.
src/mcp/guard/test/component_mcp_session_probe.cc: a test-only component (built with MYVECTOR_BUILD_MCP=ON, copied next to the guard by the build scripts, never packaged). It runs SQL the way component_mcp will: its own thread, an impersonated local session, connection audit events. Its UDF is mcp_test_local_session(user, host, sql[, 'unaudited']).
Verification
scripts/test-mcp-guard.sh passes 120/120 on MySQL 8.4.11, 9.7.2 and 26.10.0. The new local-session checks:
an MCP session's write, mysql.user read and SET subquery are refused;
reads are allowed, and the time limit is applied;
another account isn't restricted;
nothing is written, and sessions_connected returns to 0;
a session left unaudited is unseen. This pins down the requirement on components.
Against the unfixed guard, the local-session checks fail: the write succeeds, mysql.user is readable and no time limit applies.
On 8.4, the command service reports errno 0 (not 1290) for an error raised by an event consumer; the message is the same. The check accepts both.
Component-opened sessions with connection audit events are now subject to MCP guard rules. Sessions without those events remain outside the guard and audit log.
Sessions without a connection or user-change event are classified from account privileges at their first statement. Classification remains unchanged for active sessions, and session counts are updated when sessions end.
Statements and table access are denied if an MCP session cannot be safely classified.
Documentation
Clarified session classification, audit requirements for component-opened sessions, and guard test coverage.
…, Q4)
A component's "local" command-service session that impersonates an MCP account
(as component_mcp will open, and component_mysql_rest_service opens) raises no
connection event, so the guard never marked it as an MCP session: on 9.7.2 such
a session could write, read mysql.user and run without the time limit.
- The guard classifies an unclassified session from its privileges at its first
statement (query or table access event); a "not MCP" marker keeps it to one
grant check per session. An MCP session that cannot be marked is refused.
- mcp.sessions_connected is decremented when the THD ends (the slot's free
callback), covering sessions that raise no disconnect event.
- These sessions also start unaudited (Srv_session: m_audited = false): a
component must emit MYSQL_AUDIT_CONNECTION_CONNECT / _DISCONNECT for them.
Documented; component_mcp will.
- src/mcp/guard/test/component_mcp_session_probe.cc: test-only component that
runs SQL as component_mcp will (own thread, impersonated local session,
connection audit events); built with MYVECTOR_BUILD_MCP=ON, not packaged.
- test-mcp-guard.sh: local-session checks (120 checks on 8.4.11, 9.7.2,
26.10.0); the unfixed guard fails them.

Walkthrough
The guard classifies previously unclassified sessions from MCP privileges during their first statement. A test-only component opens local command-service sessions to check audited and unaudited behavior. Build and packaging scripts include the probe, and documentation describes connection audit requirements.

Summary
Session classification and guard enforcement src/mcp/guard/component_mcp_guard.cc, CHANGELOG.md, docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md
The guard distinguishes unclassified sessions from classified non-MCP sessions. Query and table-access callbacks classify sessions from MCP privileges and deny access if MCP state cannot be marked. Cleanup decrements the MCP-session count when allocated state is freed.
Local-session probe and test integration src/mcp/guard/test/component_mcp_session_probe.cc, CMakeLists.txt, scripts/test-mcp-guard.sh, scripts/build-component-26.10-docker.sh, scripts/build-component-26.7-docker.sh, scripts/build-component-8.4-docker.sh, scripts/build-component-9.7-docker.sh
A test-only UDF opens command-service sessions and can emit CONNECT and DISCONNECT events. Tests cover guard behavior for audited and unaudited sessions and for a session connected before guard installation. CMake builds the probe, and packaging scripts remove stale copies and include it in MCP builds.

Review of #252 (CodeRabbit): with first-statement classification, a session
connected before INSTALL COMPONENT becomes an MCP session at its next statement;
grant changes still take effect at the next connection (the status is kept once
decided). Docs say so, and test-mcp-guard.sh checks it: a session that connects
while the guard is uninstalled has its write refused after reinstall (122 checks
on 8.4.11, 9.7.2, 26.10.0).

The first-statement classification sentence contradicts the unaudited-session behavior.
55-55: Minor · Security & Privacy · Quick win
The first-statement classification sentence contradicts the unaudited-session behavior.
The sentence says the guard classifies a local session at its first statement. The same section says unaudited sessions send no statement or connection events to the guard, and the unaudited test expects the write to go unseen. For an unaudited session, the guard therefore never classifies at a first statement. The sentence should state that the guard cannot see the session until the component emits MYSQL_AUDIT_CONNECTION_CONNECT, and that this event classifies the session.
Suggested fix
- Such a session raises no connection event, so the guard classifies it from its privileges at its first statement.+ Such a session raises no connection event and is unaudited. The guard receives no events for it until the component emits `MYSQL_AUDIT_CONNECTION_CONNECT` for the session's THD. That event classifies the session from its privileges.

Review comment at @docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md at line 55:
Update the session-classification sentence in the “Sessions opened by
components” section: state that unaudited sessions are invisible to the guard
until the component emits MYSQL_AUDIT_CONNECTION_CONNECT for the session’s THD,
and that this event classifies the session from its privileges.

Review of #252 (CodeRabbit on 45b2bda):
- The check now confirms the MCP session is connected and in SLEEP before
INSTALL COMPONENT, and still in SLEEP after it, so its INSERT runs only once
the guard is installed (124 checks on 8.4.11, 9.7.2, 26.10.0).
- Docs: an unaudited session sends no events to the guard until the component
emits CONNECT (turning auditing on); the guard then classifies it at its
first statement (the CONNECT callback runs on the component's thread, where
the session is not current).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review of 45b2bda, follow-up on docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md:55: fixed in c7439c9, with one correction to the suggested wording. The CONNECT event turns auditing on but doesn't classify the session. The guard's connection callback runs on the component's thread, where the session's THD isn't current, so it can't see the session. Classification happens at the session's first statement, as the code does (classify() in the query and table-access callbacks). The docs now say exactly that.

The client currently runs SELECT SLEEP(8) while the guard is installed. The guard can classify the session from that query's STATUS_END event before the INSERT starts. The test can therefore pass without proving classification on the first statement started after installation.
Keep the client connected and waiting for input during installation, then send the INSERT through that same connection.

Review comment at @scripts/test-mcp-guard.sh at line 323:
Update the MySQL client flow in the test around `early_out` so the connection
remains open and idle while the guard is installed, then send the `INSERT`
through that same connection as its first statement after installation.

CodeRabbit: with SLEEP running during INSTALL, the guard could classify the
session at that statement's end. The client now stays connected and idle
(fed through a FIFO) through the install, and its INSERT is sent on the same
connection afterwards, so the check exercises classification at the first
statement after the install (123 checks on 8.4.11, 9.7.2, 26.10.0).

Review of c7439c9, follow-up "Keep the connection idle during installation": fixed in b08611e. The client is now fed through a FIFO. It stays connected and idle (COMMAND = 'Sleep' in performance_schema.processlist, with no statement running) through INSTALL COMPONENT, then gets its INSERT on the same connection, which the guard refuses. So the check exercises classification at the first statement after the install. 123/123 on 8.4.11, 9.7.2 and 26.10.0.
