  • SplitterFactoryTest.main (generated by SplitterFactoryTestUpdater) parsed its options and then did nothing. It now runs the tests with JUnitCore and fails if any test fails. The tests are now instance methods and setUpTests is a @BeforeClass method, so JUnit can run them.
  • SampleTester and SplitterFactoryTest now have a mainHelper that main wraps, so -h exits cleanly instead of with an uncaught NormalTermination. They reject stray non-option arguments.
  • Their usage messages name the right class.
  • SampleTester's -h no longer requires an argument.

Split out of #884.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

SampleTester adds a programmatic command-line helper, updates its usage text, and reports remaining positional arguments as errors. The splitter test updater adds optional goal-file replacement and generates a JUnit-compatible test class. The Makefile builds and runs that test separately.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 22f69

Parallel goal updates can fail because two builds may compile the updater class at once. Serialize that build before merging, or explicitly accept the workflow risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 22f69

The changes are confined to local generation and testing workflows, with no demonstrated expansion of attacker authority. Default generation now preserves expected outputs. Explicit goal refresh can still leave those outputs partially replaced after failure or interruption, but the committed files remain recoverable through version control.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: Explicit goal refresh deletes every existing goal before publishing replacements. A deletion or write failure, interruption, or competing refresh can leave an incomplete persisted snapshot without automatic rollback. The Makefile retry does not restore the previous snapshot. This is a bounded failure-containment issue in the developer workflow: default generation avoids this mutation, and committed goals are recoverable.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Demonstrated exposure is the local checkout's generated tests and goals, plus splitter artifacts in the invoking JVM's generation directory. The inspected updater accepts a mode flag, not caller-selected fixture or destination paths; broader tenant, service, or privileged-environment exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The new reset is an in-process Java API, not a demonstrated remote or lower-trust entrypoint. Its inspected test caller resets before generation, and the Makefile isolates that test from the general suite in another JVM. Filename sanitization removes non-identifier characters, but does not prevent identity reuse after a reset.

Serialize the updater build after Daikon compilation.

If both prerequisites are stale, make -j update-splitter-goals can compile SplitterFactoryTestUpdater.java twice. The daikon/Daikon.class recipe includes this source through JAVA_FILES, while the separate updater rule writes the same class output. These recipes can run concurrently and make the parallel goal update fail.

Make daikon/Daikon.class the prerequisite, request the updater class in a recipe step, and then run the updater.
