Previously, Daikon printed an error and the usage message for an unrecognized command-line option, but exited with status 0. Most other tools ignored the bad option and continued. Scripts that invoke Daikon, such as runcluster.pl (see #856), could not detect the failure.

This PR adds DaikonGetopt, a Getopt subclass that throws a UserError describing an unrecognized, ambiguous, or malformed option, and that handles -h and --help. Daikon and the other tools that already use Getopt now use it. It also removes Diff's -u and -z options, which had no effect (and the corresponding diff-tests goal files).

This is the first part of #857, split up for easier review. Follow-up PRs build on it. Unrelated fixes are in #905 (doc spellings) and #906 (test drivers).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Add DaikonGetopt, a Getopt subclass that throws a UserError describing an
unrecognized, ambiguous, or malformed option and handles -h and --help.
Use it in Daikon and in the other tools that use Getopt.

Remove Diff's -u and -z options, which had no effect.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Daikon adds DaikonGetopt to handle help requests and report invalid, ambiguous, or malformed options. Daikon and several tools switch from GNU Getopt to the shared parser. Tests cover parser errors, usage hints, and help behavior. daikon.diff.Diff removes the ineffective -u and -z options, and related documentation and test expectations are updated.

The remaining issue is limited to two help messages that can send users to the wrong command; it does not block the supported build or affect production behavior.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3bee6

Rejecting malformed options improves script-visible failure handling. However, one new error path bypasses output-file cleanup during programmatic invocation. The inspected paths use existing process permissions; external integrations and repeated in-process recovery remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: Shared immediate option rejection introduces an additional exit across PrintInvariants' output-resource ownership boundary. An invocation with --output followed by an unrecognized option opens the file and then throws before the stream is closed. Programmatic callers can catch the exception while the static stream remains open, weakening failure containment and recovery. The base could ignore that option and complete cleanup; help and other early-error cleanup weaknesses already existed. No increased file permissions or remote exposure is established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated resource-failure scope is the containing JVM and the output file selected through PrintInvariants arguments, subject to existing filesystem permissions. Broader service, tenant, or privileged integration exposure is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Control of programmatic invocation arguments can reach output-file creation before supplying a malformed option that bypasses closure. This establishes a resource-containment weakness, not an independently demonstrated privilege-escalation or remote attack path. File creation before validation already existed in the base.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Malformed option strings are rejected through UserError rather than returned to callers as ignorable parser results. The existing CLI termination policy reports that failure with a nonzero status, strengthening the control available to invoking scripts.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new tests exercise malformed-option classification and help termination. The inspected test class does not exercise failure after output-resource acquisition, leaving the demonstrated ownership transition untested there.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate option validation from output-file acquisition, and give each invocation exception-safe ownership and cleanup of streams it creates. Validate recovery after a rejected invocation without closing caller-owned standard output.

DaikonGetopt again provides nonOptionArgs, argsAfterLeadingOptions, a
Supplier-based constructor, and setUsageHint, which codespecs#885-codespecs#888 use.
The instrumenter's -h and --help handling belongs to codespecs#888.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Use Java 8-compatible output capture.

The Java 8 build cannot compile this helper. Java 8 provides neither PrintStream(OutputStream, boolean, Charset) nor ByteArrayOutputStream.toString(Charset). Use compatible overloads, or decode bytes.toByteArray() with new String(..., UTF_8). (docs.oracle.com)

Correct the command names in help output. Both usage messages name a different tool. A help request therefore gives an incorrect invocation.
