Behavior

Merge upstream V2R1 at bcf3731 into the fork. Eight upstream-only commits represent our contributions and their merge history; two are the maintainer's EAGLE-to-KiCad migration and GND correction. The merge resolves nine conflicts while retaining the fork's identities, calibrated soil defaults, low-battery policy, Maintenance and Storage behavior.

The fork accepts the upstream hardware files unchanged, adapts the new API example to current substitutions/secrets, and fixes the invalid-battery printf percent escape. Profiles and existing examples remain unchanged. The added upstream hardening tests are adapted to this fork's ESPHome contract.

Verification

  • 34 Python tests pass; 18 YAML files parse.
  • Strict Sphinx HTML build passes with external intersphinx inventory fetching disabled for this check.
  • git diff HEAD^1 HEAD --check passes. The 13 hardware-file changes match upstream byte-for-byte.
  • Local KiCad CLI 9.0.2 cannot load the upstream format 10.0. Design/sym-lib-table references missing Smart_Plant-eagle-import.kicad_sym. Hardware is imported as upstream source, not declared fabrication-validated. No firmware compilation or production action.
  • Rollback: revert this merge PR on the fork; no automatic live action.

AI assistance

Codex resolved the merge, verified the preserved fork behavior and compared the hardware file delta. The main agent reviewed the semantic source diff and validation limits.

CodeRabbit review

Pending final-head review. Beads: infra-3rr.61.

fix: migrate image blocks to platform syntax
- connect the orphan GND via next to C16 to C16 pad 2 (was an open)
- merge the duplicated F.Cu / B.Cu GND pours into a single two-layer
  "GND" zone, matching V2R2
- use solid zone connection on the SMD GND pads whose thermal relief
  was starved (R18, J1, IC4, C6, IC5, IC2, IC3)

DRC: 0 unconnected items, 0 starved thermals, no new violations.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
docs: correct the ESPHome baseline and document the MQTT example
refactor: split shared core from transport profiles
fix: harden sensor acquisition and e-paper sleep lifecycle
Import upstream KiCad migration and GND corrections unchanged. Resolve firmware and documentation conflicts in favor of the fork's identity, calibration, low-battery and maintenance contracts.

Adapt the native API example to current display/identity substitutions and secret references. Adapt upstream hardening tests to the fork's MQTT boot flow and native OTA validation. Retain the upstream escaped percent fix for the invalid battery display. Mark PDF files as binary.

Validation: 34 Python tests; 18 YAML files parsed; strict Sphinx HTML build with external intersphinx inventories disabled; staged diff check. Hardware assets match upstream byte-for-byte. Hardware validation remains limited: installed KiCad CLI 9.0.2 cannot load the new 10.0 schematic format; sym-lib-table references an untracked Smart_Plant-eagle-import.kicad_sym library. No firmware compilation or deployment.

Walkthrough

The change adds KiCad project configuration and preferences, replaces the Eagle project configuration, and updates repository rules. It also adds a native API ESPHome example, corrects a display format string, and adds YAML contract tests.

Changes

KiCad Project Setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Project configuration
Design/Smart_Plant.kicad_pro, Design/Smart_Plant.kicad_dru, Design/sym-lib-table, Design/eagle.epf, .gitattributes, .gitignore
Adds KiCad board and schematic settings, design-rule versioning, and a symbol library entry. Removes the Eagle project configuration. Marks PDFs as binary and ignores the Eagle directory and design backups.
Project preferences
Design/Smart_Plant.kicad_prl
Adds board display, net inspector, Git integration, jobset, project-file, and schematic selection preferences.

ESPHome Examples and Contracts

Layer / File(s) Summary
API profile and configuration contracts
examples/multi-device/my-lemon-tree-api.yaml, examples/multi-device/README.md, examples/multi-device/packages/smart_plant_core.yaml, tests/test_hardening_contract.py
Adds a native API device profile and transport guidance. Escapes the percent sign in the unavailable-battery text. Adds tests for transport sequencing, sensor cadence, invalid-reading rendering, display sleep and recovery, and component settings.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Other

Suggested reviewers: jgaguado

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 08f12

Two example and design-file gaps should be addressed or acknowledged: the KiCad symbol library file is missing, and the native API example may sleep before a client receives its measurements. Neither affects the existing production profiles.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 08f12

The new device example uses encryption and secret-backed update credentials without replacing existing fleet configurations. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Firmware-update interruption behavior and the imported hardware remain unvalidated, so the assessment is qualified rather than minimal.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The concrete authority-bearing scope is each device built and flashed from the new example: API access and firmware replacement remain separate credential-controlled capabilities. No repository-local propagation to existing fleet configurations was established; external adoption and credential reuse remain unknown.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — MQTT's battery threshold and watchdog govern admission to its maintenance workflow. Both existing profiles separately configure password-protected OTA. The API example does not inherit MQTT maintenance orchestration, but the comparison does not demonstrate removal of an OTA-handler battery gate that previously protected this profile.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The API lifecycle retains the shared persistent low-battery latch, display-settle ownership and final sleep guard. A new display settle cancels older recovery and pending sleep work. These are static containment controls, not proof that OTA interruption or concurrent firmware execution is safe.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before operational adoption, validate the composed API firmware through interrupted OTA, low-battery updates and display-recovery overlap. Define the API-specific update safety contract rather than assuming MQTT maintenance guarantees apply.

Assert the boot-hook structure, not independent substrings.

These checks pass if priority: 399.0 remains in the file but acquire_normal moves to an earlier hook. The supplied API profile states that an early acquisition can drop battery and soil updates. Parse the profiles and assert that the rail delay belongs to the priority-700 hook and API acquisition belongs to the priority-399 hook. Based on learnings: “assert on the parsed/structured output … rather than only checking that the raw source text … contains an expected substring.”

Update the hardening contract test around API and MQTT profiles to parse boot
hooks and verify their structure: assert that the rail delay is within the
priority-700 hook, while API’s script.execute: acquire_normal is within the
priority-399 hook. Replace the independent substring assertions with checks
against the parsed hook association, preserving the existing priority and delay
expectations.
