feat(ui): import and export keyboard shortcuts - #1094
Shortcut customizations can now be backed up and shared between desktop and browser installations. Import and Export live inside Settings › Customize › Keyboard Shortcuts, with matching Command Search entries.
Export writes a versioned JSON document containing only differences from defaults, using portable Mod keys. Import validates the entire file, then previews binding, conflict and unknown-command counts before merging. Imported assignments win conflicts; unrelated keys remain unchanged. Unknown plugin commands and parameters survive preference reload and export.
Adds ui.shortcuts.set, ui.shortcuts.reset, ui.shortcuts.export and ui.shortcuts.import. File I/O uses existing desktop dialogs and browser services. No dependency or project-format change; the Assistant continues refusing ui.* commands.
Adds portable JSON import and export for keyboard shortcuts, plus commands to set and reset bindings. Imports are validated and previewed before confirmation. The editor, browser and desktop file flows, tests, user guide, and roadmap are updated.

Explanation
Issue #562 is open and directly linked. Parts 1 and 2 (#572, #1004) are background only. The coding requirements for part 3 are met at head 348eaf8.
Evidence from crates/ui-egui/src/shortcutfile.rs at head:
Export: document writes {"rustgis_shortcuts": 1, "bindings": [...]}. It serializes only overrides relative to Keymap::new(registry). This satisfies the 'differences from defaults' requirement.
Portable keys: export uses the Chord string form (Mod+ spelling), per the issue example.
Validation: merge enforces the size limit, UTF-8 JSON, version 1, and no unknown document or binding fields (Document with deny_unknown_fields, and import_bindings). It validates bindings against a cloned keymap before any live change.
Summary and preview: without confirm, run stores a Preview and opens the editor. The summary reports binding, conflict, and unknown-command counts. This meets 'show a summary before applying changes'.
Merge: confirmed import assigns merged over the current keymap and saves it, so the file wins conflicts. Unrelated keys remain unchanged.
Unknown commands: unknown IDs stay in the map through the preference path and are counted, not rejected. Tests cover plugin bindings after plugin load.
Commands: ui.shortcuts.set, ui.shortcuts.reset, ui.shortcuts.export, and ui.shortcuts.import are handled in shortcutfile::run. remove is supported in set.
Browser and desktop file flows: browser uses the SHORTCUT_PICK picker and download service. Desktop uses native dialogs.
Automated tests: crates/ui-egui/tests/shortcut_customization.rs covers round trips, preview and cancel, conflict and unknown counts, malformed and oversized input, and browser picker errors. I did not read the test file directly. Test evidence comes from the PR summary and file summary.
Incremental changes since ea3a4ac (commits 348eaf8 and related fixes) were checked by reading the head version of shortcutfile.rs. The incremental diff could not be read because changed blobs were missing from the checkout. The head code is consistent with the earlier PASS evidence. The Change deserialization change in keymap.rs was not verified by diff. Saved-preference tolerance of extra fields is not a stated requirement of #562, so this does not affect the verdict.
Non-coding items and the Assistant refusal of ui.* commands are not coding requirements of this assessment. The test count differs between the PR description (2,786) and the objectives (2,782). This does not affect the coding assessment.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files map to #562 or to its implementation, tests, and documentation:
crates/ui-egui/src/shortcutfile.rs: import, export, set, and reset logic. Core requirement.
crates/ui-egui/src/shortcutui.rs: Import and Export buttons, preview modal, and save visibility. Editor integration for the preview.
crates/ui-egui/src/keymap.rs: crate-visible Change and MAX_PREF_BYTES, and unknown-field rejection. Supports validation and the portable format.
crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs: two UI_COMMANDS entries for Import and Export in Command Search. Required by the PR scope.
crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs: SHORTCUT_PICK, SHORTCUT_FILE_MAX_BYTES, open_picked routing, and command delegation. Required for the file flows.
apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs: browser picker filter and size check for shortcut files. Browser import flow.
crates/ui-egui/tests/shortcut_customization.rs: tests for this feature.
docs/user-guide/workspace.md and ROADMAP.md: feature documentation and roadmap status.
No dependency manifest, project-format, or Assistant change appears in the summaries. The Assistant still refuses ui.* commands, and crates/assistant/src/tools.rs is not in the changed set. The 'picker routing' and size-limit fixes match the browser flow and the import limits required by #562. The PR description's listed extensions (key sequences, arbitrary parameter editing, manifest defaults, presets, QGIS XML import) are not in the change set. No demonstrated unrelated change was found.

Compatibility: stored preferences now fail on unknown keys.apply_preferences deserializes every saved record as Change, so this attribute also applies to the shortcut_changes preference, not only to imported files. A saved record with an extra key (a hand-edit, a typo like "parms", or a field a later version adds) used to load silently. It now marks the whole preference set unreadable, which sets shortcut_preferences_blocked and stops later saves until Reset All. Nothing the current code writes has extra keys, so this is not a bug today, but it is a behaviour change the PR does not mention.
Suggest keeping saved-preference loading tolerant. Put deny_unknown_fields on an import-only wrapper (like Document in shortcutfile.rs) that parses the bindings and then converts them to Change. Or, if strictness is intended, say so in the PR and add a test that a stored record with an extra key is handled as intended.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Kept saved preferences tolerant of extra fields. Strict binding-field validation now belongs only to the portable document deserializer. A regression loads an extended saved record, verifies subsequent saves still work, and verifies that an imported misspelled field is rejected without changes.
Fixed in ea3a4ac. Validation: full cargo xtask ci, WebAssembly build and all pre-commit hooks passed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Possible stale state if the browser picker is cancelled.pending_open is set here before the picker opens, and only open_bytes_with clears it (via take()). If the user cancels the picker, nothing clears it, so the next file opened in the browser (for example a dropped GeoJSON) is routed to ui.shortcuts.import and fails with a shortcut-file error.
Other commands use the same pending_open pattern, so this may be pre-existing behaviour and not something this PR introduced. I have not traced the cancel path in the web inbox, so confidence is low (about 40%). A quick check is whether the web picker's cancel callback clears pending_open.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed the stale-state risk. Shortcut picks now mark returned files with SHORTCUT_PICK, following the existing marked-file routes, and never set pending_open. Cancellation therefore leaves no shortcut routing state. The browser regression starts a shortcut pick, supplies no result, opens an unrelated GeoJSON normally, then routes a marked shortcut payload into the preview.
Fixed in ea3a4ac. Validation: full cargo xtask ci, WebAssembly build and all pre-commit hooks passed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Test does not check the preview state. The assertion below only shows that plain D is unbound. It never checks that the browser payload opened the preview (app.ui.shortcut_editor.import.is_some()) with the expected summary. A regression that skipped the preview and applied immediately would still pass only if the binding check happens to fail, and the test's intent is unclear. Suggest asserting the preview explicitly:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The browser test now drives the real app UI after the marked picker result, asserts the displayed binding/conflict/unknown counts, verifies the key is still unbound, clicks Import, and verifies the binding is applied. This checks the user-visible preview without exposing private editor state.
Fixed in ea3a4ac. Validation: full cargo xtask ci, WebAssembly build and all pre-commit hooks passed.
I reviewed the full diff against pr-context/AGENTS.md, read the surrounding code in keymap.rs, shortcutui.rs, lib.rs, web.rs, and the new shortcutfile.rs, and checked wasm and layering. I found no crash paths. Non-test code uses no unwrap, expect or unsafe, and reads are bounded (take(MAX+1), base64 length cap). The findings below are about compatibility and test quality, not correctness of the import/export logic.
Bugs
Stored preferences now reject unknown keys.#[serde(deny_unknown_fields)] on Change (keymap.rs:184) also applies when saved preferences load through apply_preferences. A saved record with an extra key now blocks saves until Reset All, where it used to load silently. Nothing current writes extra keys, so this is a compatibility change the PR doesn't mention. Confidence: medium (~65%).
pending_open may be left stale on picker cancel (shortcutfile.rs:135). If the browser picker is cancelled, the next opened file could be routed to the shortcut importer. This follows an existing pattern, so it may not be new. Confidence: low (~40%).
Security
No issues found. Import input is size-capped on every path, including the native path read. Export writes only through write_atomic. The Assistant still refuses ui.*.
Performance
Minor: merge and document each re-serialize and re-parse the change list. Negligible at the 1,000-record cap.
Quality
The browser test (shortcut_customization.rs:242) never asserts that the preview opened. Its final check only shows that plain D is unbound. Confidence: high.
document() round-trips preferences() through a JSON string to get a Vec<Change>. Exposing the vector directly would simplify it.
input() and merge() both check the size limit, and merge() validates the bindings twice. Harmless, but redundant.
known() hardcodes a list of ui.* ids that can drift from the dispatch match. A shared constant would be safer.
ROADMAP.md:41: two blank lines are left before ## Next.
AGENTS.md
Wasm, layering, tl! use and the no-new-dependency rule all hold. base64 and tempfile are already in ui-egui.
The PR body links screenshots to a personal fork (Mavrick-F/rustgis-assets). AGENTS.md says images belong in opengeos/rustgis-assets and are served from assets.rustgis.app. This is a PR-description issue, not a repository file.
ui.shortcuts.import with no parameters opens a dialog. That matches the existing ui.* commands, so it is not flagged.
Confidence on the overall verdict: high that the import/export logic is sound; medium on the compatibility point. I did not run the test suite, which is not available in this environment.

Security (medium confidence): an imported file can bind a key to ui.shortcuts.export with {"path": …}. Pressing that key calls write_atomic on that path, so a shared file can overwrite an arbitrary file. ui.shortcuts.reset (reset all) and ui.shortcuts.set can also be bound, and they change saved preferences. The preview shows only counts, so the user cannot see what the file binds. The dispatch path that runs bound ui.* commands with their params is not traced here, so treat the exploit path as likely, not confirmed.
Suggested fix: refuse shortcut-management commands in imported files. Imports should only bind commands that do not write files or change preferences.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed the dispatch path: chrome.rs queues the bound command and its parameters. Import only validates and installs bindings; it does not execute them. Arbitrary command/parameter bindings are the existing keymap contract, including plugin commands and commands that write files. A ui.shortcuts.* denylist would break portable backups of those bindings without protecting other file-writing commands. Documented that shared files must be trusted and their JSON inspected before import.
Changes and evidence in 348eaf8. Validation: full cargo xtask ci, WebAssembly build and all pre-commit hooks passed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (high confidence, low severity):deny_unknown_fields and the per-record field check run before the version check. A future version 2 file with new record fields therefore fails with "Unknown shortcut binding field." instead of "Unsupported shortcut file version." Checking the version first would give users the right message. Parse into serde_json::Value, check rustgis_shortcuts, then deserialize Document.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The version marker is now checked before version-specific field validation. A regression imports version 2 with a new binding field and verifies the unsupported-version message.
Changes and evidence in 348eaf8. Validation: full cargo xtask ci, WebAssembly build and all pre-commit hooks passed.
The four inline findings are fixed: saved preferences remain tolerant while portable files stay strict; shortcut picks use marked results instead of pending routing state; the browser regression checks the visible preview and confirmation; and the roadmap spacing is corrected.
Reusing preference serialization keeps portable and saved limits and removal semantics aligned. The extra parse is bounded by the 1,000-record cap. Raw-input checks prevent oversized reads/allocations before the merge boundary. Broader UI-command metadata consolidation is outside this feature.
The screenshots are PR evidence hosted in a fork of rustgis-assets at immutable commit URLs. No image files or fork URLs were added to the RustGIS repository or its site documentation.
Fixed in ea3a4ac. Validation: full cargo xtask ci, WebAssembly build and all pre-commit hooks passed.
None confirmed. Traced the import, confirm, export, set, and reset paths. Merges are validated before any state change, and confirm recomputes against current bindings. No unwrap/expect/panic/indexing in the new non-test code. The wasm #[cfg] branches in input() and export look correct.
Security
Imported bindings can run shortcut-management commands (medium confidence, inline comment on shortcutfile.rs:109). A shared file can bind a key to ui.shortcuts.export with a path, which overwrites an arbitrary file via write_atomic. It can also bind ui.shortcuts.reset or set, which change saved preferences. The preview shows only counts, so the user cannot see this. I did not trace the keyboard dispatch for ui.* params, so the exploit path is likely but not confirmed.
Performance
None significant. Input is capped at 100 KB and 1,000 records, and the conflict loop is bounded by those limits.
Quality
Version check runs after full deserialization (high confidence, low severity, inline comment on shortcutfile.rs:90). A future version 2 file gets "Unknown shortcut binding field." instead of "Unsupported shortcut file version."
Hardcoded known() list (shortcutfile.rs:125-139, medium confidence). It duplicates the ui.* dispatch in lib.rs, and it is already inconsistent: import and export are covered through UI_COMMANDS, while set and reset are listed by hand. New ui.* commands will be reported as unknown until someone updates the list.
Import refuses when preferences are blocked, but set and reset do not (low confidence). set and reset apply to the session only, as the editor does. Import is stricter. Either choice is defensible, but the docs and code should agree.
Test helper is hard to read (nit). browser_picker_payload_and_download_use_the_portable_document checks !b.chord.command, which is a modifier flag, not a command. A name or comment would make the intent clear.
AGENTS.md
Screenshots point to a fork (medium confidence). The PR body links images from Mavrick-F/rustgis-assets, but AGENTS.md says screenshots live in opengeos/rustgis-assets. This is in the PR description, not a committed file.
hostile_params_never_panic does not cover ui.shortcuts.* (medium confidence). These commands are UI-only and sit outside the engine registry the test walks. The new unit tests use some junk input, but there is no equivalent hostile-params sweep for them.
ui.* commands open dialogs. This follows the existing ui.open pattern in lib.rs, so I am not raising it.
The rest checks out: tl! wrapping, i18n::fmt for the summary, web_time and std::time usage, wasm-safe dialogs, docs and ROADMAP updated.

The two inline findings are fixed. Also strengthened the saved-preference regression by reloading preferences after saving F8 and asserting that the original D binding still maps to select.clear.
Changes and evidence in 348eaf8. Validation: full cargo xtask ci, WebAssembly build and all pre-commit hooks passed.
The version-reporting finding is fixed, alongside the browser error/routing fixes and size/preview regressions. The command-execution concern is answered inline: arbitrary command/parameter bindings are intentional, import does not execute them, and the docs now explain the trust requirement. A shortcut-management-only denylist would leave other writing commands available. The known UI actions noted in earlier review are covered; broader command metadata consolidation is outside this feature. Saved-preference recovery behavior remains documented: import requires Reset All when saved overrides are unreadable. Tests exercise malformed input at this UI boundary, which is outside the engine command registry. Screenshot links remain PR-only evidence in an assets fork; no image files or fork links are in the repository.

Quality (confidence: high):known() repeats a hand-written list of ui.* ids that are already partly maintained in chrome::UI_COMMANDS. When a new UI command is added and missed here, a valid import is reported as having "unknown commands". Please derive the list from one source, such as a shared const next to UI_COMMANDS, and add a test that every id in UI_COMMANDS is recognised.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
known() already derives recognition from chrome::UI_COMMANDS.iter().any(...) (current code). Every ID added to that list is therefore recognized automatically, without a second list or test that mirrors the same predicate. The fallback list covers actions outside Command Search; the two omissions reported earlier are fixed. Consolidating all UI dispatch metadata would be a broader change than this portable-file feature.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Security, low (confidence: low-medium): the native path branch reads any file the process can open, up to the size limit, and then parses it. The error text is not echoed for syntax errors, but serde type errors include the offending value (for example invalid type: string "…"). Those messages then reach notify and the command result. The likely callers are trusted (the user, a script, or the CLI), and the browser cannot take this branch. Still, consider keeping the error text generic for a path import, or confirming that this matches how the other path commands behave.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed this matches existing native file imports: style.add and task.import both use read_text (including its path branch) and return serde errors with their diagnostics (items.rs). The result and notice go back to the same user invoking the import. This UI command is not exposed to the Assistant (tools.rs rejects all ui.* commands), and browser path imports are rejected. Keeping the existing detailed local-import diagnostics here; no separate untrusted remote caller is introduced.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (confidence: medium-high):capturing() now includes self.import.is_some(). If the editor window is closed while an import preview is pending, import stays Some. show() then takes its early if !editor.open return (around line 133, outside this diff), which hides the modal without clearing the preview. The result is that global shortcuts stay suppressed with no visible UI until the editor is reopened. Clearing the preview on that early-return path fixes it:
if !editor.open{
editor.import = None;
app.ui.shortcut_editor = editor;return;}
I haven't run this. A regression test that closes the editor during a preview and then checks that shortcuts work again would cover it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The actual window-close path already clears the pending preview: Window::open(&mut open) is followed by if !open { editor = Editor::default(); } (shortcutui.rs). That resets import, capture and pending together before storing the editor. The early return is for an editor that was already closed; no application caller sets shortcut_editor.open = false independently. I could not confirm the reported user path, so leaving the existing complete close/reset behavior in place.
Closing the shortcut editor while an import preview is pending leaves editor.import set. capturing() then stays true, so global shortcuts stay suppressed with no visible UI until the editor is reopened. Suggested fix is on the changed capturing() line in shortcutui.rs. Confidence: medium-high. I haven't run it.
Security
The native path import branch reads any file the process can open, up to the size limit. Serde type errors can echo parts of that file into notifications. Callers are likely trusted (user, script or CLI), and the browser can't take this branch, so the risk is low. Confidence: low-medium.
Performance
Nothing significant. picked_bytes copies up to 100 KB into a json! value. Not worth changing.
Quality
known() in shortcutfile.rs hard-codes a list of ui.* ids that overlaps with chrome::UI_COMMANDS. If a UI command is added and missed here, a valid import reports "unknown commands". Derive both from one source and test it. Confidence: high.
The existing test unreadable_preferences_survive_edits_until_an_explicit_reset now uses SHORTCUT_FILE_MAX_BYTES + 1 instead of the preference limit. It still exceeds the limit, but it no longer tests the boundary. Nit. Confidence: high.
The engine's hostile_params_never_panic doesn't reach ui.shortcuts.*. I didn't confirm whether ui-egui has an equivalent. Adding junk-parameter cases for the four new commands would match AGENTS. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
AGENTS says "Commands never open dialogs", but ui.shortcuts.import and ui.shortcuts.export call dialogs::pick_open and pick_save when no parameters are given. Existing ui.* handlers in lib.rs do the same, so the PR follows current practice. The guideline wording may be out of date. Confidence: medium.
Checked and fine: no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in new non-test code; wasm-only paths are cfg-gated; user-visible literals use tl! or i18n::fmt; no new dependencies; ROADMAP and user docs are updated; no new assets.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base d01ea4e to PR head 348eaf8). Sizes are file sizes in bytes, not line counts.
The close-state finding is answered inline: the actual window-close handler resets the entire Editor, including its import preview. The metadata and local-import diagnostic concerns are also answered on their own threads with current code evidence. known() directly checks UI_COMMANDS; it does not require manually copying those IDs.
The unreadable-preferences test covers rejection/preservation and explicit recovery rather than exact byte-boundary semantics. The new exact-100,000-byte preference round-trip test covers the valid saved-payload boundary separately, and the portable-file oversize regression uses its distinct limit. Malformed documents, field types, versions, reserved keys, record counts and oversized inputs are exercised through the actual UI command boundary. The engine sweep covers the engine registry; these UI handlers follow the existing dialog-command convention.
known does not recognize ui.copy, ui.cut, ui.copyPath, or ui.pane.catalog. A portable file that binds a key to one of these commands reports it as an unknown command in the import preview. The key still runs the command.
The list is maintained by hand. Other run_ui arms, such as ui.pane.history, may also be missing. Check each arm against known.

Update the known command ID list to recognize ui.copy, ui.cut, ui.copyPath, and
ui.pane.catalog so portable shortcut imports do not flag these commands as
unknown. Keep the change limited to these missing IDs in known.

Confirmed the nonblocking follow-up: some UI actions outside Command Search, including the listed copy/catalog actions, can be counted as unknown in the preview. This does not reject the import, drop parameters, or prevent dispatch. UI_COMMANDS entries are already recognized directly; the remaining issue is recognition of the other run_ui actions.
Tracking the follow-up here: consolidate recognition for the remaining supported UI actions and cover those aliases, rather than extend the fallback list piecemeal. Leaving it separate from this approved import/export change, consistent with this review’s explicit follow-up classification and current-head approval. No execution or persistence behavior is deferred.

Summary
Shortcut customizations can now be backed up and shared between desktop and browser installations. Import and Export live inside Settings › Customize › Keyboard Shortcuts, with matching Command Search entries.
Export writes a versioned JSON document containing only differences from defaults, using portable
Modkeys. Import validates the entire file, then previews binding, conflict and unknown-command counts before merging. Imported assignments win conflicts; unrelated keys remain unchanged. Unknown plugin commands and parameters survive preference reload and export.Adds
ui.shortcuts.set,ui.shortcuts.reset,ui.shortcuts.exportandui.shortcuts.import. File I/O uses existing desktop dialogs and browser services. No dependency or project-format change; the Assistant continues refusingui.*commands.Testing
