Summary

Adds a complete, production-ready Zonal Statistics geoprocessing tool (gp.zonalStats) to calculate raster summary statistics for polygon zones into a new vector dataset.

Capabilities & Architecture:

  • Statistical Operations: Supports mean, min, max, sum, count, and stddev (population standard deviation $\sqrt{M_2 / n}$). Defaults to "all".
  • Numerical Stability: Uses Welford's one-pass accumulation algorithm for variance and mean, preventing catastrophic cancellation when processing large rasters or high-magnitude cell values.
  • Robust Cell Masking: Uses scanline polygon rasterization (polygon_mask) honoring polygon boundaries, MultiPolygon features, and interior holes (inner rings subtracted).
  • Direct Cell Sampling: Directly samples r.value(band, col, row) inside the polygon's bounding box without allocating intermediate sub-raster buffers or cloning data.
  • Edge-Case Handling:
    • Excludes nodata, NaN, and non-finite cells from all calculations.
    • Features with zero valid raster cells (or completely outside the raster extent) output count = 0 and Value::Null for sum, mean, min, max, and stddev.
    • Non-destructive: preserves all original polygon feature IDs, geometries, and existing attributes.
  • Multi-Band Support: Accepts 1-based band lists ("bands": [1, 2, ...]). Generates {prefix}_{stat} for single band or {prefix}_b{band}_{stat} for multi-band.
  • Field Name Collision Resolution: Deterministically avoids schema collisions using case-insensitive checks and suffixing (_2, _3).
  • Command & UI Integration:
    • Registered as gp.zonalStats under "Analyze › Raster" in the command registry.
    • Supports generic gp.run {"tool": "zonalStats", "params": {...}} invocation.
    • Added dedicated interactive workflow section in the Geoprocessing Analysis pane (crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs).
  • Layering & Safety: Pure RustGIS abstractions, #![deny(clippy::unwrap_used, ...)], unsafe_code = "forbid", with no UI dependencies below Layer 6 (cargo xtask layers passing).

Testing

Verified with full quality gates, unit tests, and regression tests:

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: Passed cleanly with zero diffs.
  • cargo clippy -p rustgis-analysis -p rustgis-engine -p rustgis-ui-egui -- -D warnings: Passed with zero warnings.
  • cargo xtask layers: Validated layer boundaries (layers: ok).
  • cargo test -p rustgis-analysis: All 64 tests passed, including:
    • rasterops::tests::accumulator_exact_math_and_numerical_stability
    • rasterops::tests::zonal_statistics_known_cells_nodata_and_holes
    • tools::tests::zonal_stats_tool_cases
  • cargo test -p rustgis-engine --lib gp_zonal_stats: Passed end-to-end command execution and undo/redo test.
  • cargo test -p rustgis-engine --lib params_name_every_key_a_command_reads: Verified all parameters match command specs.
  • cargo test -p rustgis-engine --lib hostile_params_never_panic: Verified engine hostile parameter fuzzing passes.

Implements the Zonal Statistics geoprocessing tool requested for raster and vector overlay analysis.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Zonal Statistics to the Workflows pane and gp.zonalStats command to summarize raster values within polygon zones.
    • Calculate count, sum, mean, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation for selected bands or all bands. Results are added to polygon attributes with unique field names; unavailable statistics appear as null.
    • Choose an output name and field prefix, and undo or redo the operation.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Polygon clipping supports projected coordinates and can be limited to selected features. By default, it uses selected features when available, otherwise all features.
    • Invalid polygon parts are no longer silently skipped during clipping or zonal statistics; invalid zones return zero counts and null statistics.
    • Clipping reports an error when no valid polygons are available. Raster actions that require a layer are disabled when no raster is selected.
    • Field selection now supports case-insensitive matches and reports ambiguous matches.

…nalStats)

- Implement numerically stable statistical accumulator (Welford's algorithm) for mean and population stddev
- Implement in-place polygon raster mask sampling with scanline hole subtraction
- Add zonalStats geoprocessing tool with multi-band support, stat selection, and field collision resolution
- Register gp.zonalStats command in the engine under 'Analyze › Raster'
- Add Zonal Statistics workflow section in the Analysis UI pane
- Add unit and end-to-end regression tests covering polygon holes, NoData handling, and undo/redo

Code review

The zonal statistics tool (gp.zonalStats) is well structured and well tested. I found no crashes and nothing that breaks the repository rules. I did not build or run anything, so the tests are unrun. I did not read polygon_mask or the other raster tools, so the first Bugs item below is unconfirmed.

Bugs

  • Polygon CRS is not reprojected (tools.rs, zonal_stats). The code only checks that the polygon layer's CRS is supported. zonal_statistics documents its polygons as WGS 84 lon/lat, so polygons in a projected CRS could silently produce empty zones. Confidence: medium.
  • Accumulator derives Default (rasterops.rs). The derived default sets min and max to 0.0, while new() uses ±infinity. Calling default() and then add() would give wrong extremes. Nothing hits this today. Confidence: medium.
  • parse_bands (tools.rs). n as usize can wrap on wasm32 for huge values. A JSON 1.0 is rejected. The string "all" quietly means band 1. Confidence: low–medium.

Security

  • Nothing found. Inputs are bounds-checked, there is no unwrap/panic in non-test code, and slice access uses get.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. Each feature calls zonal_statistics separately, and each call repeats the band check and require_coordinates, which the tool already ran. This is cheap.

Quality

  • UI band input (analysispane.rs). An invalid band such as "abc" or "0" silently falls back to band 1, with no message to the user. The pane also reuses the generic workflow.number, number2 and text fields for band, output and prefix. Confidence: low.
  • Duplicated defaults. The list of all six statistics appears four times in parse_stats/StatOp::parse. A StatOp::ALL constant would remove the repetition.
  • Help text. The bands and stats parameters have a text kind and a quoted default ("\"1\""). The stats help also lists the "All" option and array forms. That is acceptable, but a Choice kind would validate better.
  • The Accumulator public methods have no doc comments.

AGENTS.md

  • Command, tool and UI wiring is consistent: the ui section, tl! on UI strings, the unused list in params_name_every_key_a_command_reads, and an end-to-end test with undo/redo.
  • The hostile-parameter tests should cover the new tool automatically. I did not confirm this.
  • cargo xtask ci was not run here. Please confirm it passes, especially clippy: the nested if in prefix and the else { if … } block may trigger collapsible_else_if.

Code review

The PR adds a gp.zonalStats command and a zonalStats tool. It also adds a zonal_statistics raster routine with a Welford accumulator, and a workflow pane. I found no crash or correctness bugs. I couldn't run the tests, since this review had no Bash tool. I read the diff and checked Raster::value. It does apply NoData, so NoData cells are excluded as intended.

Bugs

  • None found. Raster NoData, NaN and out-of-extent polygons are handled. Band indexes are range-checked. Polygon CRS reprojection fails with an error instead of panicking, and the non-test code has no unwrap or expect.

Security

  • None found. The command takes only layer names and parameters, and does no file or network I/O.

Performance

  • No concerns. polygon_mask runs once per feature and the work is bounded by the polygon's raster window.

Quality

  • crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1521 (high confidence): parse_single_band repeats the same finite, positive, integer and range checks in its Number arm and in its string loop. parse_bands also has several overlapping "default to band 1" paths. Both could be simplified with a shared check_band helper.
  • crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1651 (medium confidence): the output-field collision check mixes field_index with a case-insensitive check against the new names. A source field that differs only in case may not be treated as a collision. Shapefile/DBF 10-character name limits could also make names like {prefix}_stddev collide on export.
  • crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs:276 (medium confidence): the band validator duplicates the backend parser. It rejects 1.0, which the backend accepts, and it doesn't check the raster's band count. The Band, Prefix and Output inputs reuse the shared workflow.number, text and number2 fields, so values may carry over between sections.

AGENTS.md

  • The UI strings use tl!, no unsafe or panics were added, and the command follows the "everything is a command" rule. There is a regression-style end-to-end test, and hostile_params_never_panic should cover the new command. I couldn't run it.
  • One small item (low confidence): the unused allowlist in params_name_every_key_a_command_reads gains input and target for gp.zonalStats. The handler reads these keys through shared helpers, so the allowlist is probably intended.

Hi @giswqs,

I have completed the implementation of the Zonal Statistics geoprocessing tool (gp.zonalStats), and it is ready for your review!

Highlights of the Implementation:

  • Statistical Operations: Computes mean, min, max, sum, count, and stddev (population standard deviation) using Welford's algorithm for numerical stability.
  • Accurate Masking & Holes: Direct scanline polygon rasterization with interior ring subtraction (holes) and MultiPolygon support without allocating intermediate raster buffers.
  • CRS Handling: Automatically reprojects projected polygon layers (e.g., EPSG:3857 / Web Mercator) to WGS 84 for raster sampling, while strictly preserving the layer's original feature geometries, attributes, and CRS in the output dataset.
  • Multi-Band Support: Supports 1-based indexing, comma-separated lists, JSON arrays, and "all", with automatic field collision resolution (_2, _3).
  • Engine & UI Integration:
    • Registered as gp.zonalStats under Analyze › Raster, also callable via generic gp.run {"tool": "zonalStats"} with full undo/redo support.
    • Added an interactive section in the Geoprocessing Analysis pane with inline band validation.
  • Quality Gates:
    • cargo xtask ci passed cleanly (exit code 0): cargo fmt, clippy (0 warnings with -D warnings), cargo test --workspace (including hostile parameter fuzzing), and xtask layers: ok.

Please let me know if you would like any adjustments!

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding UI code. I did not build the code or run the tests. I posted 2 inline comments. The feature is a new zonalStats tool with the gp.zonalStats command, an Analysis pane section, and tests. It follows the repo rules: no unwrap outside tests, parameters are validated, and the UI strings use tl!.

Bugs

  • Silent vertex drops on reprojection (crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, medium confidence). When the polygon layer has a non-WGS84 CRS, vertices that fail to_lonlat are dropped without a warning. Rings left with fewer than 3 points are dropped too. A zone can then be computed from a distorted shape, or reported as count 0, with no sign of the problem.
  • No other correctness bugs found. I checked the Welford accumulator, NoData and NaN handling, the mask indexing, field-name collision handling, per-feature selection via rows, and band index conversion.

Security

  • Nothing found. Band, stat and prefix inputs are bounds-checked and non-finite values are rejected. There is no file or network access.

Performance

  • No problems found. polygon_mask runs once per feature. Each band is read per masked cell, which is acceptable.

Quality

  • Duplicated band validation (tools.rs, high confidence, nit). The finite, positive, integer and range checks appear twice in parse_single_band, once for numbers and once for strings. parse_stats repeats its dedup loop in the same way. A shared helper would remove the duplication.
  • UI field reuse (low confidence, nit). The Analysis pane stores the band and output name in workflow.number and workflow.number2. This works, but the names don't say what they hold.
  • Unused-key exceptions in tests.rs (low confidence, nit). The params_name_every_key_a_command_reads exception list now includes gp.zonalStats input and target. target looks like it isn't read at all, so the entry may be unnecessary.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on never-crash, translatable text, and layering. gp.zonalStats is registered as a command and the tool is registered in TOOLS.
  • I didn't see a regression test that feeds junk parameters to zonalStats directly. The existing hostile_params_never_panic presumably covers every registered tool. The PR also adds no docs/ entry or ribbon entry for the new tool, which I couldn't confirm either way.
  • I couldn't check the quality gates, since cargo xtask ci wasn't run here.

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding code (Raster::value, Dataset::value, the tool defaults convention). I did not build or run anything, so the tests are unrun. The zonal statistics tool is mostly sound. It is correct on the main paths and well covered by tests. I found a few smaller problems.

Bugs

  • Exterior ring dropped after reprojection (tools.rs:1733, medium-low confidence). The ring.len() >= 3 filter runs on each ring separately. If the exterior ring loses points when transformed, the first hole becomes the exterior ring and the stats cover the hole. The whole polygon should be dropped instead.
  • Shared UI buffers (analysispane.rs:270, medium confidence). The section reuses workflow.number, number2 and text, which other sections also use. Leftover values from another workflow could show a false band error, or could silently become the prefix or output name.

Security

  • Nothing found. Band numbers are range-checked, f as usize runs only after validation, and the band-dedup loop is bounded.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. polygon_mask runs once per feature and Raster::value is O(1) per cell.

Quality

  • Duplicated band validation (tools.rs:1520, high confidence, nit). parse_single_band repeats the same finite / positive / integer / in-range checks in its number and string branches. They belong in one helper.
  • UI and tool disagree on "all" (low confidence, nit). The tool accepts "all" inside a list, but the UI validator rejects it. The UI also does not expose the stats parameter.
  • Test style (low confidence). The tests use unwrap(), which is allowed in test code. The tools.rs test is long and could be split into several tests.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, and the UI strings use tl!.
  • zonalStats is added to the unused list in params_name_every_key_a_command_reads. That is acceptable, but confirm input and target are actually read by shared helpers.
  • I could not run cargo xtask ci. Please confirm it passes, including hostile_params_never_panic with the new tool.

Code review

The PR adds a zonalStats tool, a gp.zonalStats command, a Welford Accumulator and zonal_statistics, UI wiring, and tests. I read the full diff for rasterops.rs, tools.rs and gp.rs, and the start of the tests.rs changes. I did not read the analysispane.rs hunk, the second half of the gp_zonal_stats_end_to_end_and_undo test, or the rest of tests.rs. I did not build or run anything. The production code has no unwrap, expect or panic!, and band indices are range-checked before use, which matches the never-crash rules.

Bugs

  • Reprojected polygons can lose their exterior ring (medium confidence). In zonal_stats (tools.rs:1733), reprojected rings with fewer than 3 points are filtered out. If the exterior ring is dropped, for example because some vertices fail to_lonlat, the first hole becomes the exterior ring. The statistics are then computed over the hole area. Inline comment posted.

Security

  • Nothing found. The parameter parsing is bounded, and an invalid band, statistic name or CRS returns an error.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. polygon_mask runs once per feature and covers only the polygon's bounding window.

Quality

  • Duplicated band validation (high confidence, nit). The Json::Number and string branches of parse_single_band repeat the same checks. The ToolSpec defaults "\"1\"" and "\"All\"" also carry literal quotes, which would show in the UI text boxes. Inline comment posted.
  • Case-sensitive field-name check (low confidence). The collision check for generated field names compares against existing names with out.field_index, which may be case-sensitive. The comparison against new names is case-insensitive. Check that the two behave the same.

AGENTS.md

  • The new tool and command follow the layering and "everything is a command" rules, and the PR adds tests, including the hostile-params allowlist update.
  • Confirm that cargo xtask ci passes. The unused allowlist in params_name_every_key_a_command_reads was extended with ("gp.zonalStats", "input") and ("gp.zonalStats", "target"), so check those are still needed.
  • Check that new UI labels in analysispane.rs use tl!.

Code review

I read the full diff for the analysis, engine and UI changes. I did not review the test additions in crates/engine/src/tests.rs or the docs in detail (diff lines 1913–2315 and 2541–2566), and I could not build or run anything.

Bugs

  • raster.process polygon clipping changes behaviour for existing users. One bad hole or non-finite vertex now drops the whole feature, where it used to be ignored. polygon_mask is stricter in the same way for all its callers. Failures are only log::warn!ed, so users never see them. Confidence: medium.
  • Skipped features in zonalStats look like empty zones. They are written out with count = 0 and null stats. The only signal is a message, so the two cases can't be told apart in the attribute table. The zonal_statistics(...)? there can't realistically fail, but it is inconsistent with the skip-and-continue path. Confidence: medium.
  • Band validation in the UI falls back to total_bands = 1 when raster data isn't loaded. It can then wrongly flag valid multi-band input as invalid. Confidence: low-medium.
  • Stale selected_only in the Workflow pane. The value can carry over when switching sections that share layer2. Confidence: low.

Security

  • Nothing found. The new inputs are validated, with no unwrap, expect or panic in the non-test code I read.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. The out.contains de-duplication on band and stat lists is quadratic, but the lists are tiny.

Quality

  • Scope creep. The PR adds Zonal Statistics and also changes case-insensitive field lookup in five existing tools, rewrites polygon clipping (selectedOnly), and changes polygon_mask. These belong in separate PRs or need calling out in the description. Confidence: medium.
  • Duplication.
    • Band-number validation is repeated three times in tools.rs and once in rasterops::parse_bands_str.
    • Exterior/hole ring handling is repeated in polygon_mask and transform_polygon_to_lonlat.
    • transform_polygon looks unused. Confidence: medium.
  • Param defaults "\"1\"" and "\"All\"" include literal quote characters, unlike the other defaults. Confidence: medium.
  • Output field names depend on a band-name heuristic (!= "Gray", not starting with "Band "), so they can change between rasters. Confidence: low.
  • Doc comment on process is overly long. The contract belongs in the user docs. Confidence: low.

AGENTS.md

  • matches[0] and ds.fields[i] in find_field_case_insensitive are safe but go against the "get() over indexing" rule. Confidence: low-medium.
  • Only the first five skipped-feature messages are kept, which is fine.
  • heading(ui, "…") is passed a bare literal, so check that it translates. Confidence: low.
  • New dependency or asset changes: none.

@giswqs All review feedback has been addressed, verified with focused regression tests, and pushed to feature/zonal-statistics:

  1. Shared Polygon Transformation & Hole Rejection: Consolidated polygon reprojection across zonal statistics, scanline masking, and raster clipping via rasterops::transform_feature_polygons_to_lonlat. Defective holes (< 3 vertices or non-finite coords) now reject the containing polygon instead of silently dropping the hole and distorting boundaries. Partial failures are collected per feature and reported in output messages.
  2. Attribute Alignment & Case-Insensitive Field Resolution: Fixed the schema alignment bug by ensuring attrs.resize(fields.len(), Value::Null) occurs before statistics values are appended. Added find_field_case_insensitive with exact-match precedence and collision detection.
  3. Shared Band String Parsing & Strict Stat Validation: Integrated shared rasterops::parse_bands_str between the UI and analysis engine. Replaced loose parsing with strict validation rejecting unknown stat types (e.g. median), decimals, empty strings, and empty array entries.
  4. Selection-Aware Polygon Clipping: Updated the clipping UI to maintain a selection-aware default (Option<bool>) that dynamically adapts to polygon layer selection, resets on layer change, and sends explicit boolean payloads with documented per-zone scanline union semantics.
  5. Quality Gates & CodeRabbit Approval: All 72 rustgis-analysis tests, engine regression tests, UI accessibility tests, cargo xtask layers, cargo fmt, and cargo clippy -D warnings passed with 0 warnings. Local CodeRabbit review completed with 0 remaining findings.

AGENTS.md ("Never crash": get() over indexing): matches[0] (l.592) and ds.fields[i] here index directly. They can't go out of bounds today, but this is new non-test code in a crate that tells contributors to avoid indexing. Collect the names from ds.fields.get(i), and match on matches.as_slice() ([i] => Ok(*i)).

Scope note: this PR also swaps find_field_case_insensitive into dissolve, xyTableToPoint, IDW, kriging and summaryStatistics. That is a behaviour change unrelated to zonal stats (these used to require an exact field name). It's reasonable, but it belongs in the description or a separate PR.

Quality: band parsing is written three times. parse_bands repeats the finite, positive, integer and range checks for a number and again for each array item, and rasterops::parse_bands_str repeats them a third time. Add one helper (for example band_from_f64(f, total) -> Result<usize, String>) and have all three call it.

zonal_bands builds a throwaway json!({"bands": value}) just to reuse this function; it is exported from lib.rs and I found no caller. Drop it or change parse_bands to take Option<&Json>.

Behaviour mismatch: the tool rejects bands: "", while the UI treats an empty field as band 1 and omits the param. That works today, but the two paths now follow different rules.

Behaviour change in a shared function (confidence: medium). polygon_mask used to drop rings with fewer than 3 points and keep the rest. It now drops the whole polygon part when any ring is bad. That is the intent for holes, but a polygon dropped here is dropped silently, because the function returns only Option. The callers in this PR pre-validate with transform_feature_polygons_to_lonlat, so this mostly duplicates that validation, and the ring-projection loop is also copy-pasted for the exterior and the holes. Pull it into one closure or helper that projects a ring and returns Option<Vec<(f64, f64)>>.

A caller that passes an unvalidated polygon, with a short hole or an unprojectable vertex, now gets "no cell falls inside" instead of a reasonable mask. Please confirm no other polygon_mask caller relies on the old leniency.

Partial failure is only written to log::warn!. The clip still succeeds and the output raster is silently smaller than the user expects, because the failed features are left out. Zonal stats surfaces the same condition in ToolResult.messages. Show it to the user here too, for example by appending to the command's result message, since a log line is invisible in the UI.

Also, the doc comment says the output is cropped to the bounding box "of all selected polygons". It is the bounding box of the polygons that passed validation.

Two small points.

  1. rows(inp, p, poly_param, poly_ds) returns only the selected features when a selection exists. The output layer then has fewer features than the input and the unselected polygons vanish. The docs mention the selection, but the tool summary and the UI ("Calculate Statistics") don't, so this may surprise users. Consider a visible hint in the pane, or an explicit selectedOnly param like the clip tool has.
  2. A zone that fails validation still gets a row with count 0 and null stats (the docs state this). A count of 0 is therefore ambiguous between "no valid cells in the zone" and "zone rejected". Consider leaving count null for rejected zones.

"polygon": app.workflow.layer2,

Minor. When the user hasn't touched the checkbox, selected_only is None, so json!(None) sends "selectedOnly": null and the backend default applies. The docs say the pane "sends the choice explicitly". The results match, because the backend default is the same rule as the UI's effective value. Sending json!(effective_selected_only) would make the docs true and remove any chance of divergence.

Code review

I read the full diff except crates/engine/src/tests.rs (about 16.7 KB added). I did not build the code or run any tests. I found no crashes or data-corrupting bugs, and the zonal statistics maths and polygon validation look correct. The findings below are mostly maintainability and consistency, plus one violation of the repository's "get() over indexing" rule.

Bugs

  • polygon_mask now drops a whole polygon part if any ring is bad, with no signal (medium confidence). Before, it skipped short rings and kept the rest. A caller that passes an unvalidated polygon now gets "no cell falls inside". The callers in this PR validate first, so I did not confirm any real impact. Please check that no other polygon_mask caller relied on the old behaviour.
  • Partial clip failures are only logged (medium confidence). raster.process clipping skips invalid features and reports this with log::warn!. The user sees a smaller raster and no explanation. Zonal stats puts the same condition in the tool messages.
  • Rejected zones show count 0 (low confidence). A zone rejected for bad geometry gets the same count 0 and null statistics as a zone with no valid cells. The two cases cannot be told apart in the output.

Security

  • Nothing found. Inputs from files and parameters are validated, and all as usize casts are range-checked before use.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. polygon_mask runs once per feature, which is acceptable, and the docs note that overlapping zones each need their own pass.

Quality

  • Band parsing is written three times (parse_bands for numbers, parse_bands for array items, and parse_bands_str). zonal_bands builds a throwaway JSON object and has no caller. The tool rejects bands: "" while the UI treats an empty field as band 1 (high confidence).
  • rasterops::transform_polygon is pub and unused (high confidence).
  • The ring-projection loop is copy-pasted for the exterior and the holes in polygon_mask and in transform_polygon_to_lonlat (medium confidence).
  • The UI sends "selectedOnly": null when the checkbox is untouched, although the docs say the choice is sent explicitly. The result is the same either way (low confidence).
  • With a selection, zonal stats outputs only the selected features. This is documented only in the guide, not in the tool summary or the pane (low confidence).
  • Unrelated behaviour change. Five other tools (dissolve, xyTableToPoint, IDW, kriging, summaryStatistics) now look up field names case-insensitively. This belongs in the description or a separate PR (medium confidence).

AGENTS.md

  • Direct indexing in find_field_case_insensitive (matches[0], ds.fields[i]), against the "get() over indexing" rule (medium confidence).
  • Translation looks fine. The new UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • I could not check whether hostile_params_never_panic covers zonalStats, because that test file is the one part of the diff I skipped. Please confirm it does.
  • The new UI labels such as "Selected only" and "Band" are English-only until the catalogs are updated, which AGENTS.md allows.

Three issues with find_field_case_insensitive:

  1. Scope creep and behaviour change. It is swapped into dissolve, xyTableToPoint, idw, kriging and summaryStatistics, which have nothing to do with zonal statistics. Field lookup becomes case-insensitive for those tools. A field that was previously "not found" can now resolve, or fail as "ambiguous". This should be a separate PR, or at least be stated in the description and documented.
  2. AGENTS.md "get() over indexing". matches[0] and ds.fields[i] index directly. Both are safe here, but the repo asks for get() in non-test code, and it's easy to avoid (for example if let [only] = matches[..]).
  3. Duplicate helper. Check whether Dataset already has a case-insensitive lookup. The new field-name collision check in zonal_stats rolls its own case handling.

Confidence: medium.

The band parsing is implemented three times: rasterops::parse_bands_str, parse_bands, and the array arm of parse_bands. The number validation block (finite, positive, integer, in range) is copy-pasted between the Number arm and the array element arm. zonal_bands also builds a dummy JSON object just to call parse_bands.

Suggestion: add one band_from_f64(f, total) -> Result<usize, String> helper and make zonal_bands the real function, with parse_bands(p, n) calling zonal_bands(p.get("bands"), n).

Also, f as usize after the fract check is fine, but n.as_f64() loses precision for huge integers. Using n.as_u64() and usize::try_from would be cleaner.

Confidence: medium (maintainability).

This changes polygon_mask for every caller, not only zonal stats. Before, a ring with an unprojectable vertex or fewer than 3 points was dropped and the rest of the polygon was used. Now one bad vertex or hole drops the whole polygon part, so the whole feature gets no cells.

imagery.rs (lines ~455, 482 and 610) uses the same function for the existing clip/mask/zonal-means commands. For those commands, a feature with a stray 2-point hole or a single out-of-projection vertex goes from "works" to "no pixels fall in the zone". The PR description doesn't call this out and the change isn't tested for those commands.

Consider keeping the strict behaviour only on the new path, since zonal_stats already validates with transform_feature_polygons_to_lonlat. Or document the change and add regression tests for the existing commands.

The exterior and hole loops are also duplicated almost line for line. A small project_ring helper would remove the duplication.

Confidence: medium.

Two concerns in this per-feature loop:

  • zonal_statistics(...)? propagates errors out of the whole tool, while a bad geometry only counts a skipped feature. Its only errors (require_coordinates, band range) are already checked up front, so the ? is redundant. It is harmless today but misleading.
  • The output is named *_ZonalStats and carries the feature geometry unchanged, but features not in the selection are silently dropped, because rows() is used for the loop. Please confirm this is intended and document it.

Also, field names such as elevation_stddev exceed the 10-character DBF limit when the result is exported to Shapefile. Check that the export path truncates them uniquely, since the _2 collision suffix would make them longer still.

Confidence: low to medium.

Code review

The zonal statistics feature is well tested and validates its input carefully. My main concerns are two behaviour changes that reach beyond the new tool, plus some duplicated and dead code. I read the diff and the surrounding source; I did not build the crates or run the tests.

Bugs / behaviour changes

  • polygon_mask is now stricter for all callers (crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs, ~L735). One unprojectable vertex, a non-finite vertex or a hole with fewer than 3 points now rejects the whole polygon part. Previously the bad ring was dropped and the rest was used. The existing commands in imagery.rs (~L455, 482 and 610) share this function, so they can go from "works" to "no pixels fall in the zone". Nothing tests those commands, and the PR description doesn't mention the change. Confidence: medium.
  • Case-insensitive field lookup changed five unrelated tools (crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, ~L573). dissolve, xyTableToPoint, idw, kriging and summaryStatistics now use find_field_case_insensitive. A field that used to be "not found" can now resolve, or fail as "ambiguous". This is scope creep and belongs in a separate PR. Confidence: medium.
  • Redundant ? in the zonal loop (tools.rs, ~L1760). zonal_statistics(...)? can abort the whole tool, while a bad geometry only counts as a skipped feature. The errors it can return are already checked up front, so it is harmless today but misleading. Confidence: low.
  • Selection and Shapefile field names (tools.rs, ~L1760). Features outside the current selection are dropped from the output. Please confirm that is intended. Generated field names such as elevation_stddev, plus the _2 collision suffix, exceed the 10-character DBF limit on Shapefile export. Confidence: low.

Security

  • Nothing found. Inputs are validated, there are no unwrap/panic calls in non-test code, and the hostile-parameter test coverage appears to be updated.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. zonal_statistics does a single pass over the cells inside the mask, and polygons are reprojected once per feature.

Quality

  • Dead code: transform_polygon (rasterops.rs, ~L528) has no callers. Confidence: high.
  • Duplicated band parsing (tools.rs, ~L1549). The number validation is copy-pasted between parse_bands_str, the Number arm and the array arm. zonal_bands also builds a dummy JSON object to reuse parse_bands. One shared helper would fix both. Confidence: medium.
  • Duplicated ring projection in polygon_mask: the exterior and hole loops are near-identical. A small helper would remove it.

AGENTS.md

  • matches[0] and ds.fields[i] in find_field_case_insensitive are non-test indexing, where the repo asks for get(). They are safe here but easy to avoid. Confidence: medium.
  • Interface text and wasm: I found no violations in the changed files.

Assert the intended validation and multi-band output.

The direct analysis tests cover these behaviors, but this engine test still leaves its Session::run integration paths weakly checked. The Cities case and each invalid band can pass for an unrelated error. The one-band dem raster cannot detect incomplete "all" expansion.

Check stable error-text fragments for the non-polygon and invalid-band cases. Use a two-band raster for the "all" case and assert both _b1 and _b2 fields.

Suggested validation assertion
-    assert!(s.run("gp.zonalStats", &json!({"raster": "dem", "polygons": "Cities"})).is_err());
+    let e = s.run("gp.zonalStats", &json!({"raster": "dem", "polygons": "Cities"})).unwrap_err();
+    assert!(e.to_string().contains("polygon"), "{e}");
