feat(map): markers and hash marks along lines, as QGIS's marker and hashed lines draw them - #900
Piece 2 of #882: markers and hash marks along lines.
What it does
Strokes of marks. A line stroke can draw markers or hash marks along the line instead of a line ("markers" on a stroke of layer.lineStrokes):
Places: at intervals from the line's start, at its vertices or inner vertices, at either end, in its middle, or in each segment's middle; several at once.
Turning: with the line, optionally averaged over a stretch of it (QGIS's average angle), and turned further by an angle.
Shifting: along the line, and across it with the stroke's offset.
Look: in the stroke's colour; its width is a hash mark's line, or a marker's outline.
Placement along the whole line. Marks are placed along each part of the line as a whole, so a line cut at the image's edge keeps its intervals and its middle. Only the segments near the image are visited, so a fine interval on a long line zoomed far in stays cheap (there is a test for that).
UI: the Strokes section of the Symbology pane draws a stroke as Line, Markers or Hash marks, with Shape, Size/Length, Place, Interval, Angle and With the line. The preview shows the marks.
QGIS import:MarkerLine and HashLine become such strokes, one per layer of the symbol they place. It reads their placements (QGIS 3.24's placements and the older placement), interval, offsets, rotation, average angle, and the markers' shapes, outlines, angles and offsets.
Fix: the import took a negative offset (a stroke left of its line) as none; it now stays negative.
Checked against QGIS
I built a test project in QGIS 4.2.3, one line per case:
interval
ends and middle
hash marks at 0° and 30°
offsets along and across
inner vertices
upright markers with an angle
averaged angle on a zigzag
Rendered by QGIS (native:rasterize) and by RustGIS after project.importQgis at the same extent, all eight cases match: the marks are in the same places, at the same angles and sizes.
SMV25
Every marker line in SMV25 places font characters from swisstopo's own font. Drawn as dots of their size, they blot the line where QGIS draws a thin tick, for example at bridge ends. So font characters along lines are left out and noted for now; piece 3 (font markers) draws them.
Because of that, SMV25's scores are unchanged (old town 7.2 %, forest 3.4 %, overview 11.0 %).
Tests
Placement: intervals, offsets along the line, ends, middle, vertices, turning at bends, the averaged angle, and skipping what's off the image.
Rendering: markers, ends, offsets, hash marks, the selection halo, and a fine interval far zoomed in.
Project file: a round trip with hostile values.
Command:layer.lineStrokes with markers, and its errors.
QGIS import: an SMV25-shaped marker line and a QGIS 2 hashed line, with the notes.
Gates: fmt, clippy, the workspace tests and cargo xtask layers pass locally. The wasm target isn't installed on this machine, so CI's wasm build is the check there.
Added marker and hash-mark styling along lines, with controls for shape, size, placement, spacing, angle, rotation, offset, and color.
Line-style previews now display markers and hash marks.
QGIS imports preserve supported marker-line and hash-line styles, including placement, orientation, offsets, and opacity. Font characters along lines are omitted.
Documentation
Updated the user guide with line-marker options and clarified which QGIS line styles are supported or omitted.
…ashed lines draw them
A line stroke can draw markers or hash marks along the line instead of a line
(`"markers"` on a stroke of `layer.lineStrokes`): at intervals from the line's
start, at its vertices or inner ones, at either end, in its middle or each
segment's; turned with the line (optionally averaged over a stretch of it),
turned further by an angle, shifted along and across it. They are placed along
each part of the line as a whole, so a line cut at the image's edge keeps its
intervals and its middle, and only the marks near the image are visited. The
Strokes section of the Symbology pane draws a stroke as a line, markers or hash
marks.
The QGIS import reads MarkerLine and HashLine symbol layers into such strokes,
one per layer of the symbol they place, with their placements (QGIS 3.24's and
earlier), interval, offsets, rotation and average angle. Font characters along
lines are left out and noted: drawn as dots of their size, they blot the line
where QGIS draws a tick (piece 3 of opengeos#882 draws them).
Also fixes the import taking a negative offset (a stroke left of its line) as
none.
Part of opengeos#882 (piece 2).
Line strokes now support marker and hash-mark settings. The changes add command parsing, QGIS style conversion, rendering along line geometry, and editing controls. The user guides describe the settings and QGIS import behavior.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Marker settings and command input crates/map/src/symbology.rs, crates/map/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Line strokes gain serializable marker and hash-mark settings, placement codes, and value clamping. The command parser accepts marker objects and reports invalid values. Tests cover parsing and serialization.
QGIS marker-line and hash-line layers convert into line strokes with placements, dimensions, offsets, and opacity. Unsupported settings are reported or approximated. Signed unit conversion preserves negative line offsets.
Marker placement and rendering crates/render/src/line_markers.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/stroke_paths.rs, crates/render/src/stroke_paths/tests.rs
The renderer places and draws markers or hash marks along projected line runs. It clips off-window marks, limits marks per stroke, and adds selection outlines for visible marker strokes.
Editor controls and user documentation crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md, docs/user-guide/workspace.md
The stroke editor serializes and previews marker settings and provides controls for marker and hash-mark strokes. User guides describe the settings and QGIS import behavior.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
I read the full diff, line_markers.rs, and the render integration in crates/render/src/lib.rs. I found nothing that needs changing before merge. I did not build the code or run any tests.
Bugs
None found. The mark-placement logic holds up in these cases:
Zero-length and non-finite runs.
Marks at an interval when the interval is tiny or the line is huge. Off-image marks are skipped by clipping each segment to the image (Liang–Barsky), and MAX_MARKS and room cap the total.
Bends, end vertices, and first/last marks when offset_along is zero or not.
Low confidence, minor: in places (line_markers.rs:169), d == *d1 compares floats exactly. A mark that lands on a vertex only up to rounding error could be dropped or drawn twice. The existing test passes, and the effect would be at most one mark.
Low confidence, minor: choosing both interval and vertices puts a mark twice at each vertex that falls on an interval step. This is arguably the same as QGIS, so it is not a bug.
Security / never-crash
Command and project input are bounded:
line_markers in the engine clamps numbers, limits at lists to 16 entries, and rejects bad types.
The deserialiser clamps sizes, intervals and angles, and drops unknown places.
hostile_params_never_panic should cover the new markers parameter.
I saw no unwrap, expect or indexing in the non-test code that was added.
Performance
marker_runs projects every vertex of a feature before any off-image clipping. This is O(vertices) per feature, once per stroke stack, and acceptable (confidence: medium).
Quality
Signed offsets are now read with offset() and signed_points. Before, left-hand offsets were clamped to 0. This is a behaviour improvement for QGIS import, and the PR notes it.
along silently drops a marker line when all its placements are unknown, but it records the skip in the report. That looks right.
AGENTS.md
The PR adds docs/user-guide/cartography.md and workspace.md updates, and a regression test for hostile input in the engine and map crates.
The new interface text in panes.rs is something I did not check for tl! wrapping, because I did not read that part of the diff. Please confirm it.

Low-confidence: the vertex de-duplication relies on exact float equality (d == *d1). d = along + k * step rarely equals d1 bit-for-bit, so a mark that falls on a vertex up to rounding can be placed at the end of segment i (d <= to) and again at the start of segment i + 1 (k = ceil((from - along) / step) can give the same k). That draws the mark twice. With an alpha fill or outline the doubled mark shows as darker. A small tolerance would fix it, for example d >= *d1 - 1e-9 && i + 1 < last. A test with a vertex at a non-trivial multiple of the interval, such as an interval of 0.1 and segments of 0.3, would confirm it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining, since I couldn't reproduce it. For a mark to be doubled, along + k*step would have to round below the vertex distance d1 while ceil((d1 - along) / step) still gives the same k. Because the division is correctly rounded, the next segment then starts at k + 1. I simulated this placement for two million random intervals, offsets and vertex distances one ulp either side of a mark. That gave no doubled and no missing mark. I also tried zigzags whose segments are whole multiples of f32 intervals such as 0.6 and 1.1, and none doubled a mark either.
I read the engine command, the map model and QGIS import, and the new renderer module crates/render/src/line_markers.rs. I did not read the ui-egui or docs changes in detail. I also did not run anything, because this session has no Bash tool.
Bugs
Possible doubled marks at vertices (crates/render/src/line_markers.rs:169, low confidence). The interval placement avoids double-placing a mark on a vertex by testing d == *d1, an exact float comparison. When a mark falls on a vertex up to rounding, it can be drawn at the end of one segment and again at the start of the next. Alpha fills and outlines would show it as a darker mark. I suggested a small tolerance in the inline comment.
Security
Nothing found. The new inputs are bounded:
layer.lineStrokes checks types and clamps values.
at lists are limited to 16 entries.
Saved-project values are clamped when read.
Each stroke draws at most 20,000 marks per feature.
Marks far off the image are skipped without visiting them.
Performance
Nothing blocking. Interval placement still walks every segment of a line, but it skips off-image ones cheaply, so the cost is O(vertices).
Quality
Nothing worth raising. The tests are thorough: the command with hostile and out-of-range parameters, the save/load round trip, the QGIS import, and the placement geometry.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic! in the non-test code I read.
The new parameters appear in the layer.lineStrokes description.
I did not check ATTRIBUTION.md or the interface-text rules (tl!) for the ui-egui changes.

Major · Build marker runs with the globe projection logic. · lib.rs:727-729
crates/render/src/lib.rs:727-729 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Build marker runs with the globe projection logic.
When self.globe is active, ring_path_at densifies segments and splits them at horizon crossings. marker_runs projects only the original vertices. A segment with visible endpoints can therefore produce a straight marker run even when the rendered great-circle path bends or passes behind the horizon. Markers can appear away from the line or on the hidden globe surface.
Reuse the densified, horizon-split projection used by globe_line when building marker runs.

The doc comment for line_strokes_editor ("The Strokes section of a line layer's symbology…", lines 4226-4229) now sits directly above the new marker_preview doc comment, so it attaches to marker_preview and line_strokes_editor loses its docs. Move marker_preview and marker_rows above that comment block. (Confidence: high)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Minor: the editor preview ignores offset_along, outline and the shape for triangle/diamond/star (everything but square is drawn as a circle). It also pushes the middle mark for INNER_VERTICES and SEGMENT_MIDDLES, which is only approximately right for the straight preview line. This is acceptable for a preview, but a comment saying it is approximate would help. (Confidence: low)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in 9bfc93b. marker_preview's doc now says it is a sketch, not the map's drawing: other shapes and outlines aren't shown, and inner placements are marked at the middle. It does already apply offset_along ((m.offset_along * k).rem_euclid(step)).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Placements deserializes only from a list (Vec<String>). layer.lineStrokes accepts "at": "first" as a bare string, but a hand-edited project with a bare string fails to load the whole layer. This is inconsistent with the otherwise lenient reader. Consider accepting a string or a list, e.g. an untagged enum. (Confidence: low-medium)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining. RustGIS writes at as a list, so every saved project reads back. The bare string form is only a convenience of the layer.lineStrokes command, not a second file format. A hand-edited project has to follow the format that RustGIS writes.
I read the whole diff. I could not build or run the tests. The PR adds markers and hash marks along lines: a markers field on LineStroke, a new renderer line_markers.rs, QGIS import of MarkerLine and HashLine layers, the layer.lineStrokes command, and the stroke editor UI. The design is careful: sizes, intervals, angles and the number of placements are all clamped, and the renderer visits only the marks near the image and caps them at 20,000 per stroke per feature.
Bugs
None confirmed.
Placements deserializes only from a JSON list. The command accepts "at": "first" as a bare string, but a hand-edited project with a bare string would fail to load the whole layer. The reader is otherwise lenient (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:355). Confidence: low-medium.
Security
None found. The new project and command inputs are clamped, the placement list is length-bounded, and the renderer's work is bounded.
Performance
None found. Marks are placed per segment, segments outside the window are skipped, and the 20,000-mark cap is shared across a feature's runs.
Quality
The doc comment for line_strokes_editor is now attached to marker_preview, because marker_preview was inserted between the comment and its function. line_strokes_editor loses its docs (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4229). Confidence: high.
The editor preview of markers is approximate. It draws every shape except squares as a circle, and ignores the outline and offset_along. A comment saying so would help (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4231). Confidence: low.
The line_strokes_editor diff is large because the Cap, Join and Dash rows were re-indented into an else branch. Splitting them into a helper like marker_rows would shrink the diff. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, panic or unsafe in the new non-test code, and the tests use unwrap only in test code.
The command's hostile-input handling is covered by a regression test, but I did not check that hostile_params_never_panic exercises markers. Confidence: low.
New UI strings use tl!. No new assets, and no new dependencies.

Selection halo filter: w > 0.0 || st.markers.is_some() lets through a hash-mark stroke with width 0 and a visible colour. A hash mark with width 0 draws nothing (draw returns early), but its halo gets width + 3.0 and so shows a 3 px selection tick for a stroke that is invisible. Make the check mark-aware, e.g. (w > 0.0 || st.markers.is_some_and(|m| !matches!(m.mark, LineMark::Hash))). Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 9bfc93b. A stroke with width 0 now gets a halo only when it carries markers. A hash stroke of width 0 draws nothing, so it gets no halo either.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MAX_MARKS is a per-stroke, per-feature cap (room resets on each draw call). A layer of many features, each with a stack of marker strokes at the 0.5 pt minimum interval, can still draw up to 20,000 marks × strokes × features per frame, and marker_runs is rebuilt for every feature. The cap bounds the worst case per feature only. Consider a per-render budget, or a larger effective minimum interval in device pixels. Confidence: low–medium (performance).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining for this PR. MAX_MARKS is a safety bound against a hostile or degenerate interval. It isn't meant as a frame budget. Only the marks near the image are visited, so a normal map draws far fewer. A per-render budget would mean threading state through every layer's draw, and that belongs in a separate change if profiling ever shows it's needed.
This PR adds markers and hash marks along lines. It touches the LineStroke model, the layer.lineStrokes command, a new renderer module (line_markers.rs), the QGIS marker-line and hashed-line import, and the stroke editor UI. I read the diff and the surrounding source only; I did not build the code or run any tests. The core logic looks sound. I found no panics or unwraps in non-test code, and hostile input is clamped (sizes, intervals, angles, placement counts). The tests cover placement, clamping, off-image skipping and the QGIS conversion.
Bugs
Selection halo for zero-width hash marks (crates/render/src/lib.rs:854): the filter w > 0.0 || st.markers.is_some() lets through a hash-mark stroke with width 0. That stroke draws nothing, but its halo gets width + 3.0, so a selected feature shows a 3 px tick for an invisible stroke. Confidence: medium.
Performance
MAX_MARKS limit (crates/render/src/line_markers.rs:234): the 20,000-mark cap applies per stroke and per feature, and marker_runs is rebuilt for each feature. A layer with many features and stacked marker strokes at the 0.5 pt minimum interval can still be very slow per frame. A per-render budget would bound it. Confidence: low–medium.
Quality
Misplaced doc comment (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4247): the doc comment for line_strokes_editor now sits above marker_preview, so the two merge and line_strokes_editor loses its docs. Confidence: high (docs only).
QGIS offset sign change (crates/map/src/qgis/symbol.rs): SimpleLine offsets now use signed_points, so offsets to the left are no longer dropped. The new test covers this. I could not confirm QGIS's sign convention (positive is right of the line's direction, as the code comment says) from the repo, so it is worth a manual check against a real QGIS project. Confidence: low.
Security
Nothing found. Project and command input is clamped, array lengths are bounded (at at 16 entries), and Run::new drops non-finite coordinates.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap or panic in non-test code, and the new code uses tl! for UI text.
hostile_params_never_panic should cover the new markers parameter via the existing junk-parameter run. The PR also adds targeted tests for refused junk input.
docs/user-guide/cartography.md and workspace.md were updated, and no binary assets were added.

The segment hand-off relies on exact float equality (d == *d1). d = along + k*step and d1 come from different arithmetic, so a mark that falls on a vertex can land 1 ulp below d1. The mark is then drawn on segment i. The next segment starts at k = ceil((d1 - along)/step), which can be the same k, so it draws again and the mark is doubled. That is only visible with alpha or an outline, but it can happen. Comparing with a small epsilon, or tracking the last emitted k across segments, would be more robust. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The comment says projects are read leniently, but only Placements is lenient here. An unknown mark in a crafted or newer project (the LineMark enum deserializes strictly) fails the whole Layer load. Also, Vec<String> allocates the full array before take(16), so a hostile array of a million strings is still materialised. Consider a custom lenient LineMark deserializer and a bounded sequence visitor. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
marker_runs projects only the raw vertices. stacked_line builds the stroke path with ring_path_at, which on the globe densifies edges along great circles. Marker places and directions on a globe view therefore follow straight chords, while the line is drawn curved, so marks can sit off the visible line and interval counts differ. Also, marker_runs is rebuilt per feature and per stacked_path call, including the selection halo pass. This is acceptable if intentional, but worth a note or a follow-up. Confidence: low-medium.
I read the full diff and the surrounding render code. I didn't build the code or run the tests. The PR adds markers and hash marks along lines: a new LineMarkers type, a line_markers renderer, the layer.lineStrokes command, a QGIS import path and a stroke editor. It looks careful about the "never crash" rules: sizes, intervals and angles are clamped, mark counts are bounded, and the renderer skips off-screen stretches. I found no blocking issues, only the points below.
Bugs
Possible doubled mark at a vertex (crates/render/src/line_markers.rs:169, confidence low-medium). The hand-off between segments compares floats exactly (d == *d1). A mark that lands 1 ulp below a vertex can be drawn on both segments. This only shows with alpha or an outline.
Marks on a globe view follow chords, not the curve (crates/render/src/lib.rs:723, confidence low-medium). marker_runs projects only the raw vertices. The stroke path itself is densified along great circles on the globe. Marker positions, directions and intervals can therefore differ from the drawn line. marker_runs is also rebuilt for each feature and for the selection-halo pass.
Security
Nothing found. The new command parameters and project fields are clamped or bounded, and the hostile-parameter tests cover the new markers input.
Performance
Nothing blocking. MAX_MARKS caps the marks per stroke, and segments off the image are skipped, with a test for it.
Quality
Inconsistent lenient reading (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:355, confidence low-medium). The comment says projects are read leniently, but only Placements is. An unknown mark in a crafted or newer project fails the whole layer load. The Vec<String> also allocates the full array before the take(16) limit is applied.
Editor nits (confidence low). In marker_rows the "Angle" row doesn't use labelled_by like the other rows, so it lacks the accessibility label they have. marker_preview only sketches circles and squares, which is documented.
AGENTS.md
No violations seen. There is no unwrap or panic in non-test code, UI text goes through tl!, and nothing was added under apps/ that would break wasm.
I couldn't check the ribbon or UI screenshots, which AGENTS.md recommends for UI work.

Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base f3aaf35 to PR head 9bfc93b).
marker_runs projects only the original vertices. On a globe, globe_line densifies segments and inserts horizon crossings. A segment with visible endpoints can cross behind the horizon, but this code keeps it in one run. Markers can then appear on the hidden side and along an incorrect screen-space chord. Reuse the same densified, horizon-clipped points as globe_line.

Update marker_runs to build its runs from the same densified, horizon-clipped
points used by globe_line instead of projecting only the original vertices, so
hidden segments remain excluded and run boundaries are preserved.

Piece 2 of #882: markers and hash marks along lines.
What it does
"markers"on a stroke oflayer.lineStrokes):MarkerLineandHashLinebecome such strokes, one per layer of the symbol they place. It reads their placements (QGIS 3.24'splacementsand the olderplacement), interval, offsets, rotation, average angle, and the markers' shapes, outlines, angles and offsets.Checked against QGIS
I built a test project in QGIS 4.2.3, one line per case:
Rendered by QGIS (
native:rasterize) and by RustGIS afterproject.importQgisat the same extent, all eight cases match: the marks are in the same places, at the same angles and sizes.SMV25
Tests
layer.lineStrokeswith markers, and its errors.cargo xtask layerspass locally. The wasm target isn't installed on this machine, so CI's wasm build is the check there.Part of #882.
