feat(map): a character of a font as a marker, as QGIS's font markers draw one - #926
A point's marker, and a marker along a line, can now be a character of an installed font (Marker::Char). Map signs are often drawn this way, and QGIS calls them font markers.
Placement, as QGIS 4.2.3 does it (measured in its own renders):
the size is the font's em;
the character is centred on its advance width;
its baseline sits half the font's ascent below the point.
Fallbacks:
a family the machine lacks draws in the label font, as a label's does;
a character no font here has draws a circle of its size, so the point never vanishes.
Command:
layer.marker takes "char" and "font";
a stroke's markers take "mark": "character" with "char" and "font".
Symbology pane:
Shape › Character shows the character and a font picker (the label pane's picker, now shared);
legend patches and the stroke preview draw the character.
QGIS import:
FontMarker becomes a character marker on points, where it used to be a circle;
it also becomes one along marker lines, where it used to be left out;
several characters, font styles and anchors off the centre are noted.
Compatibility
Saved projects: shapes save and load exactly as before; a test pins this. Symbol stays Copy: a font name is kept once per run (FontName).
Hostile files: a crafted file's names are bounded in length and number, and junk reads as the label font.
GPU: the map view has no template for characters, so only a layer that draws one renders on the CPU. Other layers are unchanged, including the parity tests.
Commands: the new parameters are additions; existing calls behave as before.

SMV25 draws its map signs from swisstopo's DKM_Symbole font: 66 point symbols and 207 line symbols. Where RustGIS drew circles or left them out, it now draws QGIS's signs.
The next piece (3b) stacks several marks on a point, with offsets and rotation by a field. Half of SMV25's point signs are a white character under a coloured one, and 51 turn by - "WINKEL".
Tests
map: shapes keep their saved form; character round trip; hostile font names.
QGIS import: font markers on points and along lines.
engine:layer.marker and stroke markers with characters, an export, and junk input.
render: a 60 pt "L" checked for position and shape; the GPU fallback; the circle for a missing character; marks along a line.

Walkthrough
The change adds font-character markers for points and lines. It updates marker commands, rendering, editor controls, and QGIS import. It also adds tests and documentation for character-marker behavior.
Changes: Character marker support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Glyph contract and marker commands crates/map/src/symbology.rs, crates/map/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The marker model adds Marker::Char(Glyph) and font-name handling. Commands accept character and font parameters for point and line markers, preserve an existing glyph font in supported updates, and reject invalid or incompatible inputs. Tests cover these behaviors.
Font lookup and glyph rendering crates/render/src/text.rs, crates/render/src/glyphs.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/mesh.rs, crates/render/src/line_markers.rs
The renderer resolves installed font faces, shapes glyph outlines, and draws character markers. Marker culling uses glyph reach. Character markers on point and multipoint geometry use the CPU fallback.
Point and line marker editing crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md
The editor adds character and font controls and previews glyph markers. The guide documents character markers and includes point and line command examples.
QGIS font markers convert to glyph markers on points and marker lines. Tests check converted glyph data and approximation notes. The workspace guide updates its description of QGIS font-marker support.

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (medium confidence): while the font index is still warming up (settled == false) nothing is cached, so every character marker re-parses the outline from the font on every call. marker_path and marker_reach each call shape, so that is at least two parses per point per frame. A layer with thousands of points would stall the UI until indexing finishes. Consider caching the label-font fallback under a separate "provisional" key, or at least memoising it per render pass.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining. Nothing is cached only while the installed families are still being indexed, which happens once at startup. During that time a glyph is outlined from an already-loaded face, which takes microseconds next to filling the path, and it is cached as soon as indexing settles. Caching the provisional label-font shape would need a separate key and an invalidation step to save a short transient.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (medium confidence): if char is given together with a shape mark (e.g. "mark":"circle","char":"x"), the char silently wins. layer.marker rejects the same combination with "give a shape or a char, not both". The two commands should behave the same, so return an error here too. Only mark absent or "character" should be allowed to combine with char. Also, a non-string font (font.and_then(Value::as_str)) is silently ignored.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed the main point in 74c781f: a stroke's markers with a shape mark and a char is now refused with "give a shape or a char, not both", as layer.marker does (engine test added). A non-string font is left as it is: layer.marker and labels.style read font the same way (ps, a non-string means none), so the commands stay consistent.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (low-medium confidence): the point symbol editor passes the fixed salt "marker_char". If more than one symbol editor is shown at once (for example per-class editors), the ComboBox ids and the search temp id will collide. Include the layer or class id in the salt, as the stroke editor does with its index. Also, every keystroke in the character box runs a command, so each one adds an undo entry.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining. The symbology pane shows one point symbol editor at a time (the layer's symbol; per-class symbols are edited one at a time too), so the fixed salt doesn't collide. The character box has char_limit(2) and runs a command only when the character changes, so each typed character is one undo step, which is what a change of marker should be.
I read the diff and the surrounding source but didn't build or run anything. The PR adds Marker::Char, a character of an installed font used as a marker on points and along lines. It is carefully built: it avoids panics, bounds hostile input, and keeps the saved form of the existing shapes. I found no blocking bugs.
Bugs
None confirmed. I checked glyph outline construction (the y-flip, contour closing and fill direction), the cache locking, the GPU fallback (TessError::Refused) and the Marker as u32 replacement in mesh.rs. I also looked for other exhaustive matches on Marker. All looked correct.
Security
No issues. Font names are length-bounded and capped at 4096 distinct names, so the leaked &'static str interner can't grow without limit from a crafted project file. Glyph curves are capped at 20,000 and junk font values read as the label font.
Performance
Medium confidence: crates/render/src/glyphs.rs:33. While the font index is warming up, results aren't cached. Each point therefore re-parses its outline, at least twice per frame (marker_path and marker_reach). This could stall the UI on large point layers until indexing finishes.
Low confidence: marker_path clones and transforms the cached path per point, and takes a global mutex per lookup. This is acceptable now, but it is the next cost to look at if character layers get big.
Quality
Medium confidence: crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:528. In layer.lineStrokes, char combined with a shape mark silently wins, while layer.marker rejects the same combination with an error. A non-string font is also silently ignored.
Low-medium confidence: crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4225. The point symbol editor uses the fixed salt "marker_char", which risks ComboBox id collisions if several editors are shown at once. Each keystroke in the character box also creates an undo entry.
Low confidence: layer.marker with font alone on a non-character marker is a silent no-op.
Nit: the stroke reach calculation now uses 2 * 0.6 = 1.2 times the size for ordinary shapes. That is harmless, but it slightly widens the culling window.
Nit: the glyph outline code is not drawn with an explicit fill rule here. It relies on the existing draw_marker behaviour, which should be fine for nonzero winding.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic! in non-test code, and no unsafe. Box::leak is used but is bounded.
UI strings use tl!. The new "Character" and "Font" labels need catalog entries only before release, which the maintainer handles.
The docs are updated, and wasm compatibility looks fine (no new std-only time or file access).
The new hostile_params_never_panic coverage isn't visible in the diff for the new char and font parameters. The engine tests do cover empty, non-string and conflicting inputs. Please confirm the junk-parameter test exercises layer.marker with char.

…draw one
A point's marker, and a marker along a line, can be a character of an
installed font (Marker::Char): the size is the font's em, the character's
advance is centred on the point and its baseline half the font's ascent
below it, as QGIS 4.2 places a font marker (measured in its renders). A
family the machine lacks draws in the label font; a character no font has
draws a circle, so the point still shows.
- map: Glyph (character and family) and FontName, a family name kept once
so Symbol stays Copy; shapes save and load as before, a crafted file's
names are bounded and junk reads as the label font.
- render: glyphs.rs reads the outline (ab_glyph) once per character; the
GPU has no template for it, so such a layer draws on the CPU.
- QGIS import: FontMarker becomes a character marker on points and along
marker lines (was a circle, and left out along lines); several
characters, styles and anchors off the centre are noted.
- layer.marker takes "char" and "font"; a stroke's markers take
"mark": "character" with "char" and "font".
- Symbology pane: Shape › Character, with the character and a font
picker (the label pane's, shared); legend patches draw the character.
Part of opengeos#882 (piece 3).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (medium confidence): marker_path runs per feature, and for a character each call takes the global KEPT mutex, does a HashMap lookup, and clones the whole glyph Path before transforming it. draw_marker also calls marker_reach, which locks and looks up again. On a large point layer that is two lock+lookups and one path allocation per point. Past MAX_KEPT entries, or while the families are still being indexed (settled == false), each call also re-reads and re-outlines the glyph from the font. Consider resolving the Arc<CharShape> once per layer or draw call and reusing it, and transforming without the intermediate clone where tiny-skia allows.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining. For a character, each point takes an uncontended lock, one hash lookup and a clone of a small path that is then transformed and filled anyway. The fill is far more costly than the rest. Caching transformed paths per size and angle would grow memory for little gain. The uncached case is the startup indexing window, covered in the reply above.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit (high confidence): this error lists the accepted marks but leaves out the new "character". Also, font that isn't a string is silently ignored (Value::as_str), whereas a non-string char is rejected, so the two are handled inconsistently.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit (low-medium confidence): the font-search state id is Id::unique((salt, "search")), with no layer in it. The point-symbol editor's salt is the constant "marker_char", so a search typed for one layer carries over to the next layer's picker. The label pane scopes its search id with layer_key. Consider including the layer id here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining as low impact. The search box keeps what was typed only until a font is chosen (end_search clears it), and only one point editor shows at a time. Carrying a half-typed search to the next layer's picker is harmless.
The PR adds Marker::Char(Glyph), character-of-a-font markers on points and along lines. It also adds QGIS font-marker import, the layer.marker and layer.lineStrokes parameters, the UI pickers, and a CPU-only render path. I found no crash or correctness bugs. I read the diff and the surrounding code but did not build or run anything. The points below are small.
Bugs
None found. I checked:
the Marker as u32 cast replaced in mesh.rs;
fill rule (glyphs fill with Winding, which suits outlines);
the serde form of old shape markers (the new test pins it);
the bounded font-name interning (4096 names);
the clamped, finite-checked outline reading.
Security
None found. A crafted font name or glyph is bounded by MAX_FONT_NAMES, MAX_KEPT and MAX_CURVES. Junk in a project file reads as the label font instead of failing.
Performance
crates/render/src/lib.rs:1256 (medium): marker_path runs per feature, and for a character each call takes a global mutex, does a HashMap lookup and clones the glyph Path. marker_reach does another lock and lookup per point. Large point layers will feel this. When the cache is full or the font index isn't ready, each call also re-reads the outline from the font. Resolving the shape once per layer or draw would fix it.
Quality
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:523 (high, nit): the invalid-mark error doesn't list "character". A non-string font is silently ignored, while a non-string char is an error.
crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4291 (low-medium, nit): the font-search state id has no layer in it, so a search typed for one layer carries over to the next layer's picker.
AGENTS.md

When a character extends beyond 0.6 of its size, this check can omit its selection highlight near the image edge. markers_tilted has the same fixed-reach check at Line 2422 and can omit the marker itself. Use marker_reach(s.marker) in both checks, as Ctx::stamp does at Line 787.

…lted views keep characters on the CPU
- A FontMarker without chr, or with an empty one, draws QGIS's A; its escaped characters (~!_#!#_!~code~!_#!#_!~) are decoded.
- A tilted view with character markers standing up stays on the CPU: the GPU drew them as circles.
- A stroke's markers refuse a shape with a char, as layer.marker does; the mark error names "character".
- Choosing the label font again runs no command.
- A legend patch shows an outline-only character in its outline's colour.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Perf (medium confidence):shape() is called per marker (via marker_path and again via marker_reach). Two cases skip the cache, so the outline is rebuilt for every point:
while the font index is still warming up (settled == false);
once KEPT holds MAX_KEPT entries, since a full cache never inserts.
marker_path then also clones the Path for each marker. A layer with many character markers could be slow in either case. Consider caching the unsettled result for the duration of one render, or looking the shape up once per symbol and not once per feature.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining, as in the earlier thread (r4375012367). The warm-up case is the startup indexing window. A full cache needs 4096 distinct character/family pairs in use; SMV25, the heaviest real case here, uses a few hundred. Past that, glyphs are outlined again rather than evicting others, which keeps memory bounded on a crafted project. That trade-off is intended.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Low confidence: only append_geometry refuses character markers on the GPU. marker_instances maps Marker::Char to the circle template (shape 0), and the selection highlight (collect_highlight, line ~481) and the upright markers in a tilted view (lib.rs ~1966) both call it directly. A selected character feature drawn on the GPU path would show as a haloed circle, not the character. Please check this on the GPU path, or note it as intended.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not a bug, as far as I can see. On the flat GPU path, collect_highlight runs only when gpu_done is set (lib.rs ~3162). For a layer with a character point, append_geometry refuses it, so the layer's collection fails, gpu_done stays false and its selection goes through ctx.highlight on the CPU, which draws the character's halo. The tilted upright case (lib.rs ~1966) can't reach the GPU any more: 74c781f makes gpu_may_turn decline a tilted view with standing character markers. So marker_instances never draws a Marker::Char, and its Char => 0 arm is only an exhaustive fallback.
I read the full diff and the surrounding code. I did not build the code or run the tests. I found no correctness bugs. The remaining points are minor performance, rendering-consistency and style concerns. Two are posted as inline comments. The third, a doc-comment nit, is listed here because its inline comment could not be placed on a diff line.
Bugs
Selected character markers on the GPU path (low confidence).marker_instances maps Marker::Char to the circle template. Only append_geometry refuses character markers. collect_highlight and the upright-marker path in lib.rs (~1966) call marker_instances directly. A selected character feature drawn on the GPU could show as a haloed circle instead of the character. Posted inline on mesh.rs.
Security
Nothing found. Font names are bounded in length and number (MAX_FONT_NAMES, Box::leak capped at 4096). Glyph curves are capped (MAX_CURVES). unescape_chr only slices at ASCII digit boundaries, and its loop always shortens the remaining text. Deserialize on junk fonts falls back to the label font, as the PR's test shows.
Performance
Uncached glyph outlines (medium confidence).glyphs::shape skips its cache while fonts are still being indexed, and again once 4096 entries are held. marker_path and marker_reach each call it per marker, and marker_path clones the Path every time. A layer with many character markers could rebuild the outline for every point. Posted inline on glyphs.rs.
Quality
The doc comment added on gpu_may_turn (crates/render/src/lib.rs, ~line 738) is now a very long line. Please re-wrap it. (Low confidence.)
layer.marker and line_markers take only the first char of the string, so a multi-codepoint grapheme is silently cut. The QGIS import notes this case, but the command does not. (Low confidence.)
qgis/tests.rs asserts report.notes.len() == 1, which will break whenever an unrelated note is added. Matching on the SVG note is sturdier. (Low confidence.)
