feat(labels): the Labeling pane in a tab per topic, the map's settings left to the ribbon - #917
Steps 3 and 4 of #858: the Labeling pane shows one part of the chosen class at a time, and the map-wide settings leave it.
Class card. The class header (Class, New, Rename, Move Up/Down, Remove, Visible) sits in a card, so the tabs under it read as the parts of that class. "Label features in this layer" stays above it, as it is the layer's.
A tab per topic: Content, Symbol, Position and Range. They are drawn like the ribbon's tabs (the chosen one open onto the pane, with the accent bar), with the icon of the matching ribbon control. A narrow pane shows the names alone, and a very narrow one the icons alone, named on hover.
Content has the class's field and its SQL query on one page, with no sub-tabs. The fields are a visible list rather than a combo box: it scrolls past 8 rows, gets a filter when the layer has more than 8 fields, and scrolls to the class's field when the layer, class or field changes. The tab is called Content, not Class, so "Class" isn't used for both the class chooser and one of its tabs.
Convert To Annotation moves to the layer's right-click menu, next to Labeling Properties…, and stays on the ribbon. The menu item uses the command's name.
Following the ribbon guidelines in docs/contributing.md:
Every removed control's action is still reachable: Lock, Pause and View Unplaced under View › Labeling, and Convert under View › Labeling and the layer's menu.
No command ids, parameters or Command Search locations change.
The SQL notes stay as they are; turning them into one compact note is left for a later PR.
Testing
cargo xtask ci: passed.
Updated pane tests to open each tab (inputs by row label, commands on the selected layer, recorded steps, chosen class, font/italic/line placement, the class going away).
measurement_units.rs: the distance controls test opens the Range tab.
New test: the layer menu's Convert To Annotation creates the annotation layer and turns the source layer's labels off.
Manual checks in light and dark themes:
the tabs and their narrow-pane fallbacks;
the field list, its filter and its scroll to the class's field;
rename from any tab;
a colour drag as one undo step;
Convert from the layer menu, which is absent on rasters.
The Labeling pane organizes settings for the selected label class into Content, Symbol, Position, and Range tabs. Content combines the field list and SQL query; long field lists can be filtered, and the selected field is brought into view.
Non-raster layer context menus now offer Convert To Annotation. Converting creates an annotation layer and disables labels on the source layer.
Documentation
Updated the cartography guide with the revised Labeling pane layout and directions to find map-wide Lock, Pause, and View Unplaced controls on the ribbon.
…s left to the ribbon
The class header sits in a card, and under it a tab per topic shows one part of that class at a time: Content (the field list above the SQL query), Symbol, Position and Range. Lock, Pause and View Unplaced apply to the whole map and stay on the ribbon only; Convert to Annotation moves to the layer's right-click menu, besides View › Labeling. Refs opengeos#858.
…onvert goes by one name
The field list scrolls to the class's field when the layer, the class or the field changes, and applies its filter only while the filter shows. The layer menu's Convert To Annotation takes the command's name, and a test runs it. The Content tab's test looks for the SQL query's New expression, as a class without a clause shows. Refs opengeos#858.
…ing pane
One closure gives a tab's room for the widths it is measured and drawn at; the field filter is kept when it changes, not every frame; Field and SQL Query use a heading helper, as other panes do; the SQL tests open the pane as the others. The layer menu's Convert test imports Queryable.

Walkthrough
The labeling pane now groups selected-class controls into Content, Symbol, Position, and Range tabs. Content combines the field list and SQL clause. The non-raster layer context menu adds a Convert To Annotation action.
Changes: Tabbed Labeling Pane
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Topic navigation and Content settings crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md
The pane adds a selected-class header and four tabs. Content combines the field list and SQL clause. For layers with more than eight fields, the field list provides a per-class case-insensitive filter. Documentation describes the tabs and map-wide controls.
Symbol, Position, and Range settings crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/measurement_units.rs
Text styling, placement, and scale and distance controls appear in their respective tabs. Tests open the relevant tab before checking controls or changing settings.
The non-raster layer context menu runs labels.convert, reports errors, and closes. A test checks that conversion creates an annotation layer and disables labels on the source layer.
Issue 858: The topic tabs and relocation of map-wide controls match the described labeling-pane changes.
Issue 722: The selected-class controls across tabs match the described pane updates.
Issue 897: The pane adds topic tabs, which the issue describes as preceding work for a fixed ribbon tab.
Issue 618: Content combines the selected class’s field and SQL controls.

In icons-only mode each tab is a fixed 36 px, but the fits() check never tests that. In a pane narrower than about 150 px (4×36 + gaps) the last tabs are drawn outside the row and get clipped. Consider let w = if names { … } else { ((row.width() - 6.0) / 4.0).clamp(24.0, 36.0) };. Confidence: medium-low, since it only matters in very narrow panes.

Thanks for checking. The Labeling pane is only drawn in the right dock (panes.rs:194), which can't be narrower than 260 px (size_range(260.0..=640.0), panes.rs:74), so its content is about 235 px at the least. The icons-only row needs 4 × 36 + 3 × 2 = 150 px, so it always fits. Icons-only is already the last step, used when the names alone (about 255 px) don't fit. Leaving it as is.
This PR splits the Labeling pane into four tabs (Content, Symbol, Position, Range). The class chooser moves into a card above the tabs, and the field combo box becomes a filterable list. The Map Labeling section is removed from the pane. I read the labelpane.rs diff and checked that the removed commands still exist elsewhere. I did not build the code or run the tests.
Bugs
Narrow panes clip the last tabs (low–medium confidence). In icons-only mode each tab is a fixed 36 px, but fits() never checks that. In a pane narrower than about 150 px the last tabs are drawn outside the row. I posted this as an inline comment with a suggested fix.
Security
Nothing found.
Performance
Nothing found. The field list scrolls with a cap on rows (FIELD_ROWS). The tab widths are measured once per frame for four labels.
Quality
The "scroll to the current field for 3 passes" logic is clever but fragile. It relies on a counter kept in temp memory, and the comment explains why. That is acceptable.
field() keeps its filter text per layer but not per class. This is a minor point and probably intended.
AGENTS.md
User-visible strings are wrapped in tl!. There is no unwrap or panic in non-test code, and the .unwrap() in the test is allowed.
The Lock, Pause, View Unplaced and Convert commands that left the pane are still available on the ribbon (ribbon.rs). Convert is still on the layer menu (panes.rs).
The tests were updated to open the right tab before interacting.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 39065f7 to PR head f7aeaa9).
The change is clean and follows the repo rules. It adds no unwrap, expect, unsafe or indexing outside tests, and user-visible text goes through tl!. I found no crash or security problems. I read the diff only; I didn't build or run anything. I posted two inline comments, both low-to-medium confidence.
Bugs
Narrow-pane tab overflow (low-medium confidence, labelpane.rs:104). In the icons-only fallback each tab is a fixed 36 px, and fits never checks that width. Below about 150 px of pane width the last tabs run past the row and get clipped.
Convert To Annotation in the layer menu (low-medium confidence, panes.rs:1891). It shows for every non-raster layer, including ones with labels off or ones that can't be labelled. Clicking it then only produces an error toast. I didn't check what labels.convert does for those layers.
Security
Nothing found.
Performance
The field list lowercases every field name on every frame while the Content tab is open. This is cheap and not a concern.
Once the layer, class and field settle, the scroll-to-field logic stops after 3 frames, so it doesn't fight manual scrolling.
Quality
Scroll position on tab switch (low confidence). After the 3 scroll passes, the field list's scroll position is lost when you leave the Content tab and come back. It doesn't scroll to the class's field again until something changes.
Docs (nit, cartography.md). One reflowed paragraph line is much longer than the surrounding wrapped lines.
Test (nit). The test lists "Class" under both Content and Symbol, which reads oddly. It passes because the class card sits above the tabs.
AGENTS.md
The pane still has no state of its own, runs the same commands, and adds no dialogs from commands, so the "everything is a command" rule holds.
The new strings ("Content", "Range", "Symbol", "SQL Query", "Filter fields") are not in the catalogs yet. AGENTS.md says that's acceptable.
The tabs draw their own icons in code via icons::paint, so there are no third-party assets.
The PR description states where each removed control is still reachable, as the ribbon guidelines ask.

The pane now puts SQL Query in Content. The existing “Class › SQL” instructions point to tabs that no longer exist. Change this path to Content › SQL Query › + New expression.

The field list's filter was the layer's, so one typed for a class could hide another class's field when it was chosen. Each class now has its own filter, and a test switches classes with one typed. Refs opengeos#858.

Nit (confidence: low): in the icon-only mode the tab width is a hard-coded 36.0, and that mode is chosen without checking that four such tabs fit. In a pane narrower than about 150px the tabs run past the row, and the row is not clipped. Clamping w to (room / 4.0) would keep them inside. Also, text_w lays out four strings on every frame. Caching them in ui.data is cheap if this shows up in profiles.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The width point is the same as the earlier threads: the right dock can't be narrower than 260 px (panes.rs:74), and the icons-only row needs 150 px, so it always fits.
On text_w: it calls fonts.layout_no_wrap (widgets.rs:52-53), and egui caches laid-out text, so the same four strings in the same font are reused from frame to frame rather than laid out again. The ribbon's tab strip measures its tabs the same way every frame (ribbon.rs:224, :244). If it ever shows up in a profile, a cache would belong to both strips. Leaving it as is.

Two small UX gaps in the field list (confidence: medium-low):
When the filter matches nothing, the list is an empty framed box with no hint, so it looks broken. A dim "No matching fields" label would help.
The "scroll the chosen field into view" budget (scrolls < 3) is keyed on (layer, class, field) only. It is spent on the first visit to the Content tab. Switching to another tab and back, or clearing the filter after the field was hidden, never scrolls to the field again. In a long field list the chosen field can then sit out of view. Including the filter text in the now key would fix it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Thanks, both points led us to rethink the widget. #919 replaces the visible field list with a box, as the Font one is: it always shows the class's field (or names one the layer no longer has), so there is nothing to scroll into view, and its search lives in the popup and says "No fields match" when nothing does.
The Labeling pane change (tabs, field list, Convert moved to the layer menu) looks correct. I found only small UX and robustness issues. I did not build the code or run the tests, and I found nothing that would crash, nor any security or wasm problems.
Bugs
The "scroll the chosen field into view" budget in the new field list is keyed on layer, class and field only. It is spent on the first visit to the Content tab. Returning to the tab, or clearing a filter that had hidden the field, does not scroll to it again, so in a long list the chosen field can be out of view. (Confidence: medium-low; inline comment.)
The icon-only tab mode uses a fixed 36 px width without checking that four tabs fit. In a very narrow pane (under about 150 px) they overflow the row. (Confidence: low; inline comment.)
Quality
A filter that matches no fields shows an empty framed box with no hint. A "No matching fields" label would help. (Confidence: medium; inline comment.)
topic() measures four strings with text_w on every frame. This is cheap, but the widths could be cached. (Confidence: low.)
docs/user-guide/cartography.md: one rewrapped paragraph now has an overlong line. This is cosmetic. (Confidence: low.)
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic was added outside tests. The unwraps in the new tests are allowed.
User-visible strings go through tl!.
"Convert To Annotation" is now in the layer menu, and it reuses the existing command with the layer parameter.
No new dependencies or assets.
The Never crash and layering rules are not affected.
