feat(ui): ask to save unsaved changes before quitting or replacing the project - #945
The desktop app now asks before it discards unsaved changes. Until now Quit, the window's close button, New, Open, the World Atlas sample, a template and a project dropped on the window all replaced the project without a word, and autosave (#896) removes its copy on a clean quit, so one accidental Ctrl+Q lost the work.
The dialog.Save changes to Parcels? with Save, Don't Save and Cancel (Escape):
Save saves first, with Save As when the project has no file. If that is cancelled or fails, nothing is discarded.
Don't Save goes on. On quit, the recovery copy is removed as a clean quit already does; after a replacement autosave removes it, as the new project has nothing unsaved.
Cancel goes back to the project.
Where it asks. Closing the window (the close button, the system's Quit, ui.quit): the app answers eframe's close request with CancelClose while the project has unsaved changes, asks, and lets the next close through once answered. Replacing the project: New, Open, the sample, a template, a recent project in the Browser pane, a dropped project file and Command Search's routes to those. Open asks after the file is picked, so a cancelled picker asks nothing and a QGIS project (a new map of this one) never asks.
Commands still never open dialogs. The check is RustGisApp::run_by_user, which the interface's dispatch points use (the ribbon and toolbar widgets, menus, keyboard shortcuts, Command Search, the Project tab, the Browser pane, drops, and the pickers behind Open and templates). project.new, project.open and the rest run silently as before for the CLI, Python, scripts, tasks, the AI Assistant and MCP clients, which call commands directly.
Unsaved means unsaved.Session::dirty was a flag that undo didn't clear, so undoing back to the saved state still counted as unsaved, and the dialog would have asked when nothing changed. The session now gives the project a new state number at each change; undo steps remember theirs, and the project is saved while its state is the one last saved or opened. dirty becomes dirty(), with mark_saved() and mark_unsaved() (recovered work, unsaved whatever undo does) replacing direct writes. The title's "•" follows it.
Shortcuts behind a dialog. Keyboard shortcuts now don't act while a modal dialog is open. Escape is bound to the Explore tool and shortcuts ran before dialogs drew, so Escape never reached a dialog (the recovery dialog's Later included), and Ctrl+N could start a replacement behind the prompt.
Code
rustgis-engine: the saved state (state, saved, states on Session, a state per undo step, put aside and given back with a replaced project).
rustgis-ui-egui: a saveprompt module (the dialog, the close-request check, run_by_user); dispatch call sites switched to it; shortcuts skipped under a modal; the Project tab's cards get accessible names; unit tests answer the native file pickers through a test-only dialogs::PICKED.
No new dependency, no format or command change. apps/rustgis is unchanged beyond the dirty rename: its ui.quit → Close path now comes back through the check.
Choices worth checking
Desktop only. The browser warns before a page with unsaved changes is left, and saves by downloading, which can't be chained the same way; its New and Open still don't ask. The user guide says so.
States, not contents. Typing the saved name back after undoing past a save still counts as a change.
macOS Quit doesn't ask. Cmd+Q and the Dock's Quit end the app without a close request (eframe's exiting path), so the prompt can't show there. Intercepting applicationShouldTerminate: needs unsafe objc2 (a delegate class, or NSMenuItem::setAction), which unsafe_code = "forbid" rules out. Instead, an exit with unsaved changes nobody chose to discard keeps a last recovery copy, marked as quit, and the next start offers it back ("RustGIS was quit last time without saving your changes."). With autosave off nothing is kept. Whether a real prompt there is worth an unsafe exception is a maintainer decision.
Testing
cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, all tests, layers), and cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web builds.
Engine: undo_back_to_the_saved_state_leaves_nothing_unsaved (undo and redo to and around the save, merged steps, a failed command, a replacement rolled back inside a task, recovered work, a replacement made by an undone task).
UI (saveprompt::tests, real frames, clicking the dialog's buttons):
Quit: Cancel and Escape keep the app and its changes; ui.quit asks once and stops asking the shell meanwhile; Don't Save closes.
Save on a never-saved project: Save As cancelled keeps everything; a picked path saves, then quits.
A failed save discards nothing and says why.
New from the toolbar: Cancel, Save (written to its file first); undo back to the save doesn't ask.
Ctrl+N and the Project tab ask; Escape answers the dialog rather than switching tools.
Open from the picker and a dropped file ask; Don't Save opens.
Commands run directly, an agent's on the session and a script's line, don't ask.
ui_shot: the dialog after an edit and a click on New.
Desktop users can save, discard changes, or cancel before quitting, closing the window, or replacing a project through the interface. A failed save leaves the project intact.
Unsaved-change status remains accurate across edits, saves, undo, and redo.
With autosave enabled, an unanswered quit prompt preserves a recovery copy for the next launch. Saving, replacing the project, or choosing Don’t Save when quitting removes the copy; disabling autosave prevents one from being kept.
Documentation
Updated the workspace guide with desktop save-prompt and recovery behavior, and clarified that the browser app uses its page-leave warning.
…e project
The desktop app asks "Save changes to <project>?" (Save, Don't Save,
Cancel) before quitting, closing the window, or replacing the project
with New, Open, the sample, a template or a dropped project file.
Commands stay silent: the interface's dispatch points go through
RustGisApp::run_by_user, which asks; scripts, the AI Assistant and
attached agents call commands directly.
Undo back to the state last saved now leaves nothing unsaved: the
session gives each change a state, undo steps remember theirs, and
Session::dirty() compares the state with the one saved.
Keyboard shortcuts don't act behind a modal dialog, so Escape answers
the dialog rather than switching tools.

Walkthrough
The session now tracks saved project states across edits, undo, and redo. Desktop UI actions can prompt before replacing a dirty project or closing the app. Autosave recovery behavior, UI dispatch, tests, and workspace documentation were updated.

Session state IDs replace the public dirty flag. Edits, undo, redo, saves, and project replacement update or restore those IDs. Call sites and tests use dirty(), mark_saved(), and mark_unsaved().
Define save-prompt and close behavior crates/ui-egui/src/saveprompt.rs
The prompt holds pending replacement or quit actions. Save proceeds only when saving succeeds. Don’t Save proceeds; Cancel and Escape leave the pending action undone. Tests cover prompt choices, save failures, and replacement behavior.

Project-replacing UI actions use run_by_user. The UI defers project-tab closure and map invalidation while a prompt is pending. Test-only file-picker behavior supports UI tests. The workspace guide documents desktop prompts and browser page-leave warnings.
Preserve autosave recovery on unanswered quits crates/ui-egui/src/autosave.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/autosave.rs
Autosave keeps a final recovery copy when a quit prompt is unanswered and marks it as a quit recovery. Tests cover quit recovery and disabled autosave.

Explanation
Issue [#906] requires macOS Cmd+Q and Dock Quit to use the same Save/Don't Save/Cancel prompt as other close paths. The current saveprompt::close_requested handles viewport close requests, but apps/rustgis/src/main.rs::on_exit handles exits that do not produce that request by ending autosave. The current documentation also states that macOS Quit does not ask and only preserves a recovery copy. The replacement routes, save protection, direct-command silence, saved-state undo handling, and reported tests support the other [#906] requirements.
Resolution
Implement the [#906] prompt path for macOS Cmd+Q and Dock Quit, including Cancel, successful Save, canceled or failed Save, and Don't Save behavior. Add macOS-specific automated coverage, or record an approved change to the open issue that removes this requirement.

ui.quit (scripts, the AI Assistant, attached agents) sets quit_requested, and this branch turns it into a dialog when the project is dirty. That contradicts the module doc and docs ("commands never ask"). An unattended agent or script calling ui.quit now blocks on a modal that nobody answers. It may be intended for the desktop app, so I'd state it in the docs or decide it explicitly. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
No unattended caller can reach ui.quit. It is an interface command, and only RustGisApp::run runs ui.*:
Scripts refuse every ui.* line (refused_in_script, crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs:441). Tasks and notebooks run through the same path.
The AI Assistant refuses ui.* before running anything (crates/assistant/src/tools.rs:269).
The MCP relay and the file bridge call Session::run, whose registry has no ui.* commands.
The CLI and Python have no interface at all.
So the dialog only shows for someone at the window, and "commands never ask" holds for every command a script or agent can run. Quitting through the interface asking first is the point of #906.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This returns early for any modal layer, not only the save prompt. Every other egui::Modal dialog now silently disables all global shortcuts too (Ctrl+S, undo, and so on). That is probably fine, but it is a broad behaviour change. Also, modelbuilder::shortcuts used to run first and is now blocked too. Please confirm that is intended. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Yes, that's intended. The PR description covers it under "Shortcuts behind a dialog". Shortcuts ran before any dialog drew, and Escape is bound to the Explore tool. So Escape never reached a dialog: it couldn't cancel this one or say Later to the recovery dialog. Ctrl+N could also start a replacement behind the prompt.
The same holds for the other modals: Delete, a plugin's confirmation, Command Search, ModelBuilder's Discard. Ctrl+S, undo or a ModelBuilder shortcut acting on what sits behind a question is a hazard, not a feature. Each dialog's own keys (Escape, Enter in Command Search) are still read inside the dialog. ModelBuilder's shortcuts run again once the modal closes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
!app.session.dirty() after ui.save is the right guard, but if the save is asynchronous or deferred (a Save As dialog that opens in a later frame instead of returning), Save silently does nothing and the user's click on New/Quit is lost with no feedback. This holds on desktop, where the picker is synchronous. Worth a comment that this depends on ui.save being synchronous on desktop (opens_files()). Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added in c915183. The comment says the result is read at once because the desktop saves synchronously. That shell is the only one that asks, since asks requires opens_files(). There, ui.save writes the file before it returns, and Save As's picker returns before ui.save does. A shell that saved later, like the browser's download dialog, would have to continue from its own completion instead.
I read the whole diff and checked the surrounding code: take_project_state, main.rs quit handling, the opens_files and quit_requested sites, and the leftover .dirty uses. I didn't build or run anything. The dirty: bool → state-id design (state, saved, states) holds up. I checked these paths:
undo and redo swap state ids correctly
merged steps keep the first state
failed commands restore the state
clear_history gives a fresh state
recovered work stays unsaved through mark_unsaved
No .dirty field uses remain.
Bugs
ui.quit from a script, the AI Assistant or an attached agent now opens a modal when the project is dirty, so an unattended caller can stall. This contradicts the "commands never ask" claim in the docs. The behaviour may be intended (confidence: medium). Inline comment on saveprompt.rs.
The backstage closes and the map is invalidated right after run_by_user, even when the command only opened the dialog (lib.rs:2446). After Cancel, the user is dropped out of the Project tab (confidence: low-medium). I couldn't attach an inline comment to that line, so it is only noted here.
Security
Nothing found. File paths and command parameters take the same path as before, and the pending Replace parameters are held in memory only.
Performance
Nothing found. The state ids are plain u64 counters, with no extra cloning.
Quality
The early return in chrome::shortcuts applies to any egui::Modal, not only the save prompt. Every other modal now blocks all global shortcuts too. This is probably fine but is a broad change (confidence: low). Inline comment on chrome.rs.
The Save answer relies on ui.save finishing synchronously on desktop (confidence: low). If it didn't, Save would do nothing and the click would be lost. A comment would help. Inline comment on saveprompt.rs.
pick_folder isn't stubbed under cfg(test) like pick_open and pick_save. This is a minor inconsistency.
The tests are thorough: undo, redo, merge, failed-command and recovery cases, plus UI tests for each answer. They look well targeted.
AGENTS.md
The new saveprompt.rs has no unwrap or panic outside tests, and no unsafe.
Interface strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
The new code uses no std::time. Layering looks intact, since the engine gains no egui dependency.
A check against the wasm build wasn't possible here. opens_files() should keep the prompt off the web.

Choosing New, World Atlas or Open from the Project tab closed the tab
even when the save prompt only asked, so Cancel dropped the user on the
map. The tab now stays until the answer.
Also: say why reading the save's result at once is safe (the desktop
saves synchronously); note in the user guide that macOS Quit (Cmd+Q,
the Dock) doesn't ask yet; and move the tests main gained since to
Session::dirty().
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Thanks for the review. Where each point landed, in c915183:
Project tab closing after Cancel: fixed. New, World Atlas and Open from the Project tab now leave the tab open while the dialog asks, so Cancel goes back to it. It closes once the project is replaced. shortcuts_and_the_project_tab_ask_too now cancels from the tab and checks it's still open.
ui.quit from scripts or agents: none of them can reach it. Scripts and the AI Assistant refuse ui.*, and the relay has no ui.* commands. Details are inline.
Shortcuts under any modal: intended and covered in the description. Details are inline.
Save relying on a synchronous ui.save: I added a comment saying so.
pick_folder not stubbed for tests: I left it as is. Nothing in these tests opens a folder picker. Five other places call rfd::FileDialog::pick_folder directly, so stubbing this one wouldn't make it consistent.
The same commit also moves the tests main gained since this branch (move_shared_vertex) to Session::dirty(). That fixes the Lint and Test failures, which were CI building against the newer main. cargo xtask ci passes on the merged tree, and the wasm build passes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Second replacement silently dropped (low confidence in severity, high in behaviour). While a question is pending, ask keeps the first one and discards the new Discard::Replace without any notice. Dropping two project files together is one case: the first is asked about and the second never opens, and nothing says so. A short notice or a queue would make this visible.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 863e984. A drop now opens its project files first. While the prompt asks, the rest of the drop waits unopened, and a notice says how many: "2 other dropped files weren't opened: drop them again once you've answered about the unsaved changes." open_and_drop_ask_before_replacing_unsaved_work drops a data file, then two projects. It checks that the prompt asks, that the data isn't added to the project Don't Save would discard, and that the notice shows.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: this states as fact that macOS Quit (⌘Q) and the Dock's Quit don't ask. The PR description says that path is not verified, and main.rs notes it may not return from run_native. Either verify it or word this as "may not ask yet".
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
It's stated as fact on purpose. eframe's exiting handler confirms the path: "On Mac, Cmd-Q we get here and then run_app_on_demand doesn't return". That's the same exit main.rs notes. What wasn't verified when the description was written is now settled, and the description says so. Since 9a9ce65, the paragraph also says what happens instead: the changes are kept as a recovery copy and offered back at the next start.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
AGENTS.md: commands never open dialogs (medium confidence).ui.quit run by a script, the CLI or an attached agent sets quit_requested (lib.rs:3178). main.rs then sends a close, and the next frame's saveprompt::close_requested (called here) cancels it and opens the Save/Don't Save dialog. So a non-interactive ui.quit leaves the window open behind a question. That contradicts the module doc ("Commands never ask") and the PR's claim that agent and script commands run silently. Consider letting only the user's quit go through the prompt, or documenting ui.quit as the exception.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Same as the earlier note: nothing non-interactive can run ui.quit. Scripts refuse ui.* lines (refused_in_script, workflows.rs:441). The AI Assistant refuses ui.* (assistant/src/tools.rs:269). Attached agents reach the session through Session::run, whose registry has no ui.* commands. The CLI and Python have no window. So quit_requested is only set from the interface, and asking there is #906's point.
Silent drop of a second replacement: while a question is pending, saveprompt::ask discards a new Discard::Replace with no notice. Dropping two project files together opens only the first. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted (saveprompt.rs:44).
Security
None found. The new code writes only through the existing save commands and reads no new input.
Performance
None of note. The per-frame close_requested check and the early return in shortcuts are cheap.
Quality
The card doc in backstage.rs:150 says "A New Project card", but the function is used for all start cards. Nit, with a suggested fix (inline posted).
The macOS Quit paragraph in docs/user-guide/workspace.md:30 states as fact that ⌘Q doesn't ask. The PR body says that path is unverified. Nit (inline posted).
chrome.rs:557 (the tool.set branch that closes the palette) may now be unreachable, because the new early return in shortcuts skips that path while the Command Search modal is open. Low confidence. Not posted inline.
AGENTS.md
"Commands never open dialogs": ui.quit run by a script, the CLI or an agent sets quit_requested, and the next frame's close check opens the Save dialog. That contradicts the module doc and the PR's "commands run silently" claim. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted on lib.rs:3522.
The ui.openUrl project-open path also skips the prompt, but it is reached only from the web shell, so I did not count it.
Checked and found sound: the autosave recovery copy is cleared on quit regardless of the dirty state (autosave::end). Failed commands report through Session::notify. The guarded rollback doesn't create a false "clean". Dropped .rgispkg files route through project.open, which is in REPLACES. No stale dirty field uses remain in the repository.
I did not compile or run the tests. The CI status is taken from the PR description.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 01c85f5 to PR head c915183).
On macOS, Quit (Cmd+Q, the Dock) ends the app without asking the
window to close, so the save prompt never shows, and the clean exit
then removed the recovery copy: the work was lost. Now an exit with
unsaved changes the user never chose to discard writes a last copy
and keeps it, marked as quit, and the next start offers it back
("RustGIS was quit last time without saving your changes."). With
autosave off nothing is kept.
The autosave tests that quit with unsaved work now answer Don't Save
in the dialog, the only way to that exit elsewhere.

Bug (docs), confidence high. This says "Your changes aren't lost" for a Quit that skips the prompt, but line 69 says "With autosave off, nothing is kept". With autosave off, ⌘Q discards unsaved work and the sentence here is false. The "don't ask yet" claim is also stated as fact, while the PR body says Cmd+Q was not verified on macOS. Suggest making the recovery claim conditional on autosave and softening the macOS wording until it is verified, e.g. "...and, with autosave on, keeps a recovery copy that is offered back the next time it starts."
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 863e984. The macOS line now says that with autosave on (the default), the changes are kept as a recovery copy and offered back, and with autosave off they're lost, so save before you quit. On "stated as fact": eframe's own exiting handler confirms the macOS Quit path ("On Mac, Cmd-Q we get here and then run_app_on_demand doesn't return"), and the PR description now says so. The prompt itself is #966.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug, confidence medium. Each dropped file goes through run_by_user, one at a time. Two cases break the prompt:
A project plus a data file in one drop: the data file (not in REPLACES) is added to the open project before the user answers. If they choose Don't Save, that layer is silently discarded along with the rest.
Two project files in one drop: the first asks and sets asking. The second hits ask(), which keeps the first question and drops the second. run_by_user still returns Ok(Null), so nothing is reported.
Suggest collecting the dropped files and asking once, or at least stopping the loop when saveprompt::waiting(self) becomes true, and reporting that the rest were not opened.
Project plus data file: project files open first, so data dropped with a project goes into that project, not the one it replaces.
Two projects: while the prompt asks, every remaining file waits unopened, and one notice counts them.
Since #952, drops go through layerchooser::add_file. Its project case now uses run_by_user too, so the prompt covers it. open_and_drop_ask_before_replacing_unsaved_work covers both cases.

Possible data loss, confidence medium-low. The stored Discard::Replace runs whenever the user clicks Don't Save, but the dialog is not modal for commands. An attached agent or the AI Assistant can keep editing while it is open. Then the user's "Your changes will be lost" answer covers an older state, and edits made after the prompt are discarded without a question. Suggest recording session state at ask time and re-asking if it has changed by the answer. The same applies to Quit, which unanswered does not check. Also, the prompt says changes will be lost even when the replacing command then fails (for example a bad .rgis). The guarded command restores the project, so nothing is lost, but the wording is misleading.

Fixed in 863e984. The dialog records the project's state when it asks (Session::state). If an agent or the AI Assistant changed the project by the time the user answers Don't Save, nothing is discarded. The dialog stays and says "The project changed while this was open: check the changes, then answer again." Then it asks about the project as it is now. a_change_while_asking_is_asked_about_again covers it.
On quitting: once Don't Save is chosen, the window closes within a frame or two, so there's no window for an agent's edit to slip in. On a replacing command that then fails: nothing is lost, because the command restores the project. "Your changes will be lost if you don't save them" describes what Don't Save allows, not what the command then does.

Nits, confidence high. Grouped here because they are small:
The undo step is now a 5-tuple, and the tests destructure it as (snap, _, _, _, _). A small struct with named fields (state, label, ...) would read better and survive the next addition.
state (current state) and states (count of states issued, line 483) are easy to confuse. Something like last_state or issued would be clearer.
saveprompt.rs repeats app.session.dirty() && app.opens_files() in asks, close_requested and unanswered. One helper would keep them in step.
The kept_line split in autosave.rs means existing translations of the full "didn't close properly" sentence are now orphaned. Acceptable under AGENTS.md, but worth noting for the translator.
Repeated predicate:dirty() && opens_files() is now one helper, unsaved_here, used by asks, close_requested and unanswered.
Step tuple: it was already a 4-tuple; this adds the state. A named struct would be a refactor of the undo stack better done on its own.
state and states: they sit together, and each has a doc comment saying which is which.
Orphaned translations: none exist. No catalog in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/*.tsv had the full "didn't close properly last time. A copy of…" sentences, so nothing is lost.
Docs contradict the code. docs/user-guide/workspace.md:31 says "Your changes aren't lost" for a macOS Quit that skips the prompt. Line 69 says that with autosave off nothing is kept, so ⌘Q with autosave off discards unsaved work. The macOS "don't ask" claim is also stated as fact, though the PR body says ⌘Q is unverified. (confidence: high)
Multi-file drops. In crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:3611, a project plus a data file in one drop adds the data file to the open project before the user answers, so Don't Save discards it silently. Two project files in one drop: the second is dropped with no notice, because ask() keeps the first question and run_by_user still returns Ok. (confidence: medium)
Security
Nothing found. The change reads no files beyond the picker and writes only the recovery copy and the user's chosen save path.
Performance
Nothing significant. The new checks are O(1) per frame or per click.
Quality
Possible discard of post-prompt edits: crates/ui-egui/src/saveprompt.rs:137. Don't Save runs the stored replacement even if an agent or the assistant has changed the project since the prompt was shown. Record the state at ask time and re-ask if it changed. The "changes will be lost" wording is also misleading when the replacing command then fails. (confidence: medium-low)
Nits, grouped: Step in crates/engine/src/lib.rs:421 is a 5-tuple that the tests destructure as (snap, _, _, _, _); a named struct would read better. state and states (line 483) are easy to confuse. The dirty() && opens_files() predicate is repeated in asks, close_requested and unanswered. Splitting kept_line orphans existing translations of the full sentence, which is acceptable under AGENTS.md. (confidence: high)
AGENTS.md
No unwrap/expect/panic in new non-test code, no unsafe, and dialog text uses tl!/i18n::fmt. Commands do not open dialogs; the prompt is in the UI layer. Docs are updated.
AGENTS.md asks for a ci:macos or ci:windows label on PRs that touch platform-specific code or file dialogs. This PR changes the macOS quit path and the native picker flow, and its testing section lists only Linux. Consider labelling it before merge. (confidence: high)

…of a drop
Review round 3 on the save prompt:
- Don't Save no longer discards changes made while the dialog showed
(an agent, the AI Assistant): the dialog says the project changed and
asks again. Session::state exposes which state the project is in.
- A drop opens its project files first, so data dropped with a project
goes into that project; while the prompt asks, the rest of the drop
waits unopened and a notice says how many.
- Dropped project files open through the prompt now that drops go
through layerchooser::add_file (opengeos#952).
- Command Search closes on its own Escape: the shortcut branch that
closed it under a modal could no longer run.
- Docs: macOS Quit keeps the work only with autosave on; the recovery
copy goes on Don't Save, not on every quit.

Round 2 and round 3 of this review are handled in 863e984, together with 9a9ce65:
Second dropped project, and project plus data in one drop: a drop opens its projects first. The rest wait while the prompt asks, with a notice saying how many.
Edits made while the dialog is open: Don't Save asks again when the project changed since the question.
The full review of 863e984 raised nothing new. On the Linked Issues warning: the macOS Cmd+Q and Dock Quit prompt moved to #966, as agreed in review. It needs a maintainer decision on unsafe AppKit code. Meanwhile, this PR keeps unsaved work as a recovery copy when the app is quit without an answer.
@Mavrick-F Understood. The macOS Cmd+Q and Dock Quit prompt remains a follow-up in #966. This PR preserves a recovery copy after an unanswered quit when autosave is enabled.
The approval workflow will check current review readiness and permissions.

# RustGIS — instructions for agents
## Never crash
- No `unwrap()`, `expect()`, `panic!`, `unreachable!`, `todo!` in non-test code; no `unsafe`
(`unsafe_code = "forbid"`). Crate roots carry the `#![deny(clippy::unwrap_used, …)]` block.

Bug (confidence: high, ~85%).add_file is also reached from the ui.addFile command (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1955, dispatched by RustGisApp::run). That is the path scripts, the AI Assistant and attached agents use, and the PR says those "never ask". Now a ui.addFile with a .rgis path and unsaved changes raises the Save/Don't Save/Cancel dialog for a non-user caller. The comment on line 51 ("Only the interface comes here ... ui.addFile") is also wrong.
Suggested direction: keep ui.addFile on run, and have only the interface callers (drops, the Browser pane, the ui.open picker) ask. For example, give add_file a by_user: bool argument, and choose run_by_user or run at line 53 from it. A test should cover app.run("ui.addFile", {path: "x.rgis"}) with unsaved changes, expecting the project to open with no prompt.

Design gap (confidence: medium, ~60%). On macOS, Cmd+Q and the Dock's Quit end the app with no close request. With autosave off (minutes == 0), this branch keeps nothing and the unsaved work is discarded silently. That is the accidental-Ctrl+Q data loss #906 is meant to fix, and it still happens on macOS for anyone who has turned autosave off. The PR documents this, and the limit is reasonable given unsafe_code = "forbid". Consider a notice on the next start, or a note in the release text, so users with autosave off know to save before quitting on macOS.
I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code. I checked the removed dirty field for leftover uses (none remain), the desktop quit path (apps/rustgis/src/main.rs:261), the REPLACES command ids (all exist), and that Command Search is an egui Modal (so removing its Escape branch is covered by the new modal gate). I could not build or run the tests here.
Bugs
ui.addFile now raises the save dialog for non-user callers. layerchooser::add_file always calls run_by_user, and ui.addFile reaches it through RustGisApp::run (lib.rs:1955). Scripts, the AI Assistant and attached agents use that path, and the PR says they never ask. Confidence about 85%. Inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/src/layerchooser.rs:53.
Security
None found in the changed code.
Performance
None significant. The modal check in shortcuts and the drop sort are per-frame or per-drop and cheap.
ask() lets a Quit prompt replace a pending New or Open prompt without a word (saveprompt.rs:56). The user's chosen action is dropped with no notice. Low severity.
closing stays true after a quit answer. If a close is ever not honoured, later closes skip the prompt. Low severity, low confidence.
The kept_line strings were reworded, so existing .tsv translations of the old sentence are orphaned. The AGENTS.md workflow covers this, so it is only a note.
AGENTS.md
Translatable strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, as required. Layering holds: saveprompt lives in ui-egui.
No new dependency and no unsafe. The new code adds no unwrap, expect or panic. The new tests use unwrap, which is normal in test code.
The desktop-only prompt and the macOS gap are disclosed in docs/user-guide/workspace.md, as the PR body says.

…'s saved state has it
main replaced Session::dirty with a saved state (opengeos#945): project.clearLog and
project.logCommands now call mark_unsaved, since no undo step brings the
log back.

Summary
The desktop app now asks before it discards unsaved changes. Until now Quit, the window's close button, New, Open, the World Atlas sample, a template and a project dropped on the window all replaced the project without a word, and autosave (#896) removes its copy on a clean quit, so one accidental Ctrl+Q lost the work.
The dialog. Save changes to Parcels? with Save, Don't Save and Cancel (Escape):
Where it asks. Closing the window (the close button, the system's Quit,
ui.quit): the app answers eframe's close request withCancelClosewhile the project has unsaved changes, asks, and lets the next close through once answered. Replacing the project: New, Open, the sample, a template, a recent project in the Browser pane, a dropped project file and Command Search's routes to those. Open asks after the file is picked, so a cancelled picker asks nothing and a QGIS project (a new map of this one) never asks.Commands still never open dialogs. The check is
RustGisApp::run_by_user, which the interface's dispatch points use (the ribbon and toolbar widgets, menus, keyboard shortcuts, Command Search, the Project tab, the Browser pane, drops, and the pickers behind Open and templates).project.new,project.openand the rest run silently as before for the CLI, Python, scripts, tasks, the AI Assistant and MCP clients, which call commands directly.Unsaved means unsaved.
Session::dirtywas a flag that undo didn't clear, so undoing back to the saved state still counted as unsaved, and the dialog would have asked when nothing changed. The session now gives the project a new state number at each change; undo steps remember theirs, and the project is saved while its state is the one last saved or opened.dirtybecomesdirty(), withmark_saved()andmark_unsaved()(recovered work, unsaved whatever undo does) replacing direct writes. The title's "•" follows it.Shortcuts behind a dialog. Keyboard shortcuts now don't act while a modal dialog is open. Escape is bound to the Explore tool and shortcuts ran before dialogs drew, so Escape never reached a dialog (the recovery dialog's Later included), and Ctrl+N could start a replacement behind the prompt.
