feat(postgis): a PostGIS tab to connect, edit and save tables, refusing conflicts - #671
Editing PostGIS tables from RustGIS: a PostGIS tab on the ribbon (desktop only) to connect to a database, load a table as a layer you can edit with the usual tools, and save the edits back to the table, refusing conflicts instead of overwriting them. This is the first half of a planned series; creating tables and schema/table/column operations would follow in their own PRs.
Ribbon groups and modal forms
Connection:Connect PostGIS (host, port, database, user, password, encryption, or a whole connection string) and Disconnect.
Layer:Add Layer lists the tables with a geometry or geography column and loads one whole, up to 100,000 rows, with an optional SQL condition.
Edit:Save Edits and Discard Edits. Each form shows the layer's table and how many rows are new, changed and deleted.
Commands. Everything is a command, so the CLI, Python, MCP and the AI Assistant can use them too.
pg.connect, pg.disconnect, pg.status, pg.tables
pg.addLayer
pg.pendingEdits, pg.saveEdits, pg.discardEdits
How saving works
A loaded layer keeps the table, its integer primary key, the SRID, and each row's xmin plus a hash of the row as read (PostgisEdit on Layer). The hash tells which rows were edited; xmin tells whether the database row changed since. The row versions are shared behind an Arc, like features, so undo snapshots stay cheap.
pg.saveEdits uses a separate writable connection; the existing read connections stay read only. In one transaction it:
locks the changed and deleted rows FOR UPDATE and checks their xmin;
checks that new rows' keys are free.
Any conflict rolls the whole save back, and the error lists the rows: changed or deleted in the database since they were read, or key already taken. A row someone else changed that wasn't edited here is not a conflict.
Only the columns whose values changed are written. A numeric read as a float is therefore left alone unless edited. Geometry goes back through ST_Transform to the column's SRID, to single or multi type, and to its dimensions.
New rows get their key in this order: the key field's value, else the table's default (serial/identity), else the feature id. Their features then take the key they were saved with.
Dataset::push hands out max + 1, so a feature added after a delete could reuse a deleted row's key and be saved as an update of that row. A small hook in Session::guarded gives such features ids past every key.
Safety and layering
Passwords are remembered for the session only, never written to the project.
Saving uses the user's PGPASSWORD/pgpass only for the database they connected to in this session, never for one named only by a project file.
pg.connect, pg.disconnect and pg.saveEdits are user-only: plugins can't run them, and the AI Assistant asks every time. pg.tables, pg.addLayer and pg.discardEdits join the database commands, which need both the files and network permissions.
The tab and its commands are desktop only. TABS leaves PostGIS out on wasm, and rustgis-web still builds.
PostgisSource::read_editable shares row decoding with the streamed reads, which are refactored but otherwise unchanged.
Docs: a "The PostGIS tab" section in docs/user-guide/data.md and the ribbon table in docs/user-guide/index.md. New strings use tl!, and Indonesian translations are included.
I'm happy to move these buttons elsewhere, for example under Data, if a separate tab doesn't fit the ribbon's order.
Testing
cargo fmt --check, cargo xtask layers, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings and cargo test --workspace pass locally (Windows). cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web also passes.
hostile_params_never_panic covers the new commands.
Ignored live tests, run against PostgreSQL 16 + PostGIS 3.4 with RUSTGIS_TEST_POSTGIS:
postgis_tab_live
postgis_edits_live, which makes and drops its own tables. It covers a combined save (update, delete, insert into a serialPolygon, 3857 table) with numeric precision preserved, then the conflict cases: a row changed elsewhere, a row deleted elsewhere, an unedited row changed elsewhere (no conflict), and a taken key on a table without a default.
The existing postgis_live_end_to_end and postgis_live still pass.
Manual: the ribbon, dialogs and pending-edit counts were checked with ui_shot, and the documented CLI example was run against a scratch table.
Related issue
None yet. This is part of a series toward full PostGIS editing; next come Create Layer (a new table, also from an existing layer), then schema/table/column operations.
Added a desktop-only PostGIS tab for connecting to a database, browsing geometry tables, and loading data into editable map layers.
Filter loaded rows with an optional condition and load up to 100,000 rows per layer. Editable tables require a single-column integer primary key.
Review pending inserts, updates, and deletions, then save or discard edits. Saves check for conflicting database changes and apply edits together; any conflict prevents the save. Saving requires the necessary database permissions.
Discarding edits reloads the layer from the database.
Bug Fixes
Database names containing spaces are now handled correctly when shown in shortened connection details.
Documentation
Added user guidance for connecting to PostGIS, working with editable layers, and handling conflicts.
…yers
The ribbon gains a PostGIS tab (desktop only) with Connect PostGIS, Disconnect
and Add Layer, each with a modal form.
- pg.connect, pg.disconnect, pg.status, pg.tables and pg.addLayer commands.
The connection is the session's, never the project's, and its password is
remembered for the session only.
- pg.addLayer loads a table whole (up to 100,000 rows, an optional SQL
condition), its feature ids the table's integer primary key. The layer keeps
the table, key, SRID, write permission and each row's xmin, so saving edits
can tell rows changed by someone else since.
- PostgisSource::read_editable reads rows with their versions in one read-only
snapshot; row decoding is shared with the streamed reads.
- The AI Assistant asks before connecting or adding a table; plugins can't
connect.
- Indonesian translations for the new strings; user guide updated.

…flicts
The PostGIS tab gains an Edit group: Save Edits and Discard Edits, each with
a modal form that shows the layer's table and how many rows are new,
changed and deleted.
- pg.saveEdits writes a layer's edits to its table in one transaction, on a
separate writable connection (the read connections stay read only). Rows
changed or deleted are locked and must still be at the xmin they were
read at, and new rows' keys must be free; otherwise nothing is saved and
the conflicting rows are listed. A row someone else changed that wasn't
edited here is no conflict.
- Only changed columns are written, so values read through a cast (numeric
as a number) stay as they were; geometry goes back to the table's
coordinate system, single or multi type and dimensions. New rows take
their key field, else the table's default key, else their feature id, and
their features take the keys they were saved with.
- The layer keeps a hash of each row as read, to tell which rows were
edited; pg.pendingEdits counts them, pg.discardEdits loads the rows again.
- New features never reuse the key of a loaded row deleted since: they get
ids past every key, after any command.
- The AI Assistant asks every time before saving; plugins can't save.
- Live tests make and drop their own tables; user guide and Indonesian
strings updated.

pg.saveEdits and pg.discardEdits act on the active layer when given none, so
they join DEFAULTS_TO_ACTIVE_LAYER: a task step recorded from them names the
layer, and every_optional_layer_is_classified passes.

Walkthrough
This change adds a desktop PostGIS workflow to connect to a database, load editable layers, track row changes, and save or discard edits. Saves use row-version checks and a transaction. Engine commands, map metadata, desktop controls, tests, and user documentation support the workflow. PostgreSQL database labels also handle quoted names with spaces.

Hi @andriyanto, welcome, and thanks for the PR! The conflict checking on save is a nice design, and the live tests and docs help a lot.
RustGIS is very open to first-time contributors. Most of the review here comes from CodeRabbit and the GitHub Actions checks, and neither starts until the PR is out of draft. Mark it ready when you're happy with it. You'll then need to work through whatever they flag, and it will probably take a few rounds before it's ready to merge.
Please run cargo xtask ci locally first. It runs the same gates and saves some round trips.
One heads-up: a PR this size may get changed or reworked as it goes in, or occasionally replaced by a different approach. That's how it goes on a busy project, and it isn't a judgement on your work. Thanks for contributing!
Mixed-geometry tables load up to limit rows per family, so three families can load 300,000 rows against a documented 100,000 cap. pg.rs:370. Confidence ~70%.
A failed connection during save() can make Conn::with re-run the whole transaction, which can duplicate inserts on serial-key tables or report false conflicts. postgis.rs:1201. Confidence ~55%.
xmin is used as the row version. After a row is frozen (autovacuum), xmin can read as 2, which gives false "changed in the database" conflicts on untouched rows. postgis.rs:870. Confidence ~55%.
An unconstrained geometry column can lose its multi-part type: a one-part MultiPolygon is written back as Polygon. postgis.rs:1168. Confidence ~50%.
A cleared field on a new row is omitted from the INSERT, so a column default applies instead of NULL. postgis.rs:1330. Confidence ~55%.
Undo after Save Edits restores the pre-save layer while the database keeps the saved rows, so the next save reports conflicts. pg.rs:132. Confidence ~60%.
Security
No confirmed vulnerability. Passwords stay out of the project and the history redaction covers them. The where condition is raw SQL run with the user's credentials. The ; check is not a real boundary, but the read-only snapshot and the existing DATABASES policy keep this in line with other SQL commands. Confidence ~40% that it matters.
The save dialog shows only the table, not the database. A project that names another server would send its rows there on Save. Confidence ~40%.
Performance
save issues one UPDATE per changed row inside the transaction. row_hash serializes every feature to JSON on each pending-edits count and each save. Both matter at the 100,000-row ceiling. Confidence ~50%.
Quality
pg_layer_edits reuses dialogs.text as a cache key, and a failed count is silently shown as blank. dialogs.rs:1225. Confidence high, low severity.
Edits::is_empty appears unused. Confidence ~60%.
Disconnect leaves the remembered password in place until RustGIS closes, which the docs do not make clear.
AGENTS.md / CONTRIBUTING.md
The ROADMAP item "Write edits back to GeoPackage and PostGIS" is marked Coordinate first. The PR changes the .rgis project format (new Layer.postgis and versions), which CONTRIBUTING also asks to coordinate. The PR says "Related issue: None yet." A proposal issue is expected, and ROADMAP should be updated if this lands part of that item. Confidence ~80%.
The doc example at docs/user-guide/data.md:233 puts a password on the command line.

A save that lost its connection was retried by Conn::with, which
could repeat a write that had already committed. Save now runs once
through Conn::once and says the outcome is unknown when the connection
drops.
A GEOMETRY column of any type no longer collapses a one-part multi
geometry to its single part.
The row limit of a PostGIS layer applies to each layer, as the discard
path already reads it; the docs, dialog and parameter text say so.
The Save and Discard PostGIS Edits dialog counts into its own field,
and a failed count shows its error. The pg.connect example in the data guide no
longer puts a password on the command line.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Applied by the claude-autofix workflow.
Reject SQL comment tokens in condition, or wrap the condition so it cannot drop ORDER BY … LIMIT.
The ; check does not stop SQL comments. A condition such as true) -- or true) /* turns ) ORDER BY "id" LIMIT n into a comment. The row query then has no LIMIT, and MAX_EDITABLE no longer applies.
The condition is stored in PostgisEdit::condition, which is saved in the project file. pg.discardEdits runs the stored condition again on the user's connection. An untrusted project can therefore make RustGIS read a whole table into memory. The read-only snapshot prevents writes, but it does not bound the read.
Apply the limit outside the user's expression. Use a subquery for the filtered rows, or reject -- and /* as well as ;.

Claude autofix: nothing to do. There are no conflicts with the base branch, and no open review threads that a bot or someone with push access started and autofix hasn't answered yet.
Undo (or a failed enclosing command) restores the layer's row versions
from before a save while the rows stay written, so saving again would
insert its new rows twice. The session remembers the versions a save
wrote over and pg.saveEdits refuses a layer back on one. Documents
Undo after a save and new rows' empty fields taking column defaults,
and formats the ribbon's tab list.

Database::short reads libpq keyword strings with keyword_pairs, so a
dbname PostGIS › Connect quotes ('my gis') is named without its quotes
and isn't cut at a space. row_hash streams the row's JSON into FNV-1a
instead of building a Vec per row, with a test pinning the same hash
saved projects hold.

- Around line 1083-1085: Keep the equivalence check between row_hash and the FNV
calculation, and add an assertion that row_hash for the fixture f equals a fixed
expected value. Use the fixture’s established persisted hash so serialization
changes cannot silently alter the compatibility contract.

- Pin row_hash's value for the test fixture as well as its equivalence
to the buffered FNV-1a, so a change in how rows are serialized fails
the test instead of showing saved rows as edited.
Tested end to end against PostgreSQL 16 with PostGIS 3.4 (PR head 58b7b5e merged with current main), using a cities table with a serial key, a numeric population column and geometry(Point, 4326). The screenshots walk through the PostGIS tab: connecting, adding the table as a layer, then the Save Edits form after renaming Paris, adding Buenos Aires and deleting Lima, which counts 1 new, 1 changed and 1 deleted. The last one is after saving, with the status bar confirming the save. Afterwards psql showed exactly those three changes in the table, with Buenos Aires given the next serial key.
Also checked from the CLI: the four ignored live tests pass; a row changed or deleted in the database since loading refuses the whole save and names the row; untouched numeric values keep their precision; a moved MultiPolygon in EPSG:3857 keeps its type and SRID; a table without an integer key, a bad condition, a wrong password and an injection attempt in the table name all fail with clear messages; and a condition that tries to write is stopped by the read-only transaction.
Thanks for this, the editing itself works well (see the test notes above). One change before merging: the controls shouldn't be a new top-level tab. Under the ribbon guidelines, tabs are organised by task, and these buttons split across two tabs that already cover them:

Managing edits
Edit › Manage Edits, next to Save / Undo / Redo
Disconnect
Rare housekeeping
No ribbon button: Command Search (pg.disconnect) and a button in the connect form
1. Connect and Add Layer: fold them into the existing Database… form. It already reads PostGIS tables (read-only, through layer.addDatabase), so a second PostGIS entry next to it would be two buttons for the same destination. For a PostgreSQL connection, the form could get a "Load for editing" checkbox that runs pg.connect and then pg.addLayer instead of layer.addDatabase, showing the condition and row-limit fields only when ticked and saying why a table without an integer key can't be edited. If that form is too much to touch in this PR, a separate "PostGIS Table (Editable)…" item right under Database…, opening your dialogs, is an acceptable fallback.
2. Save and Discard: Edit › Manage Edits. Managing edits is that tab's stated purpose. A small column labelled "Save to PostGIS…" and "Discard PostGIS Edits…" (the "…" because they open a form, and the name keeps it apart from the project Save beside it), shown only when the map has a PostGIS-editable layer and left out on wasm, so the Edit tab is unchanged for everyone else and the web build stays as it is.
3. Disconnect: no ribbon button. The connection already ends when RustGIS closes; Command Search reaches pg.disconnect, and the Database… form can show "Connected to … · Disconnect" when a session is open.
With that, TABS goes back to one list for desktop and web. The commands, docs and tests stay as they are apart from the ribbon paths in docs/user-guide/data.md and index.md. A small wording nit while you're there: the conflict message says "1 conflicts".
…nage Edits
The ribbon is organised by task, and the PostGIS tab's buttons belong
to tabs that already cover them:
- Home › Add Data › Database… gets a "Load for editing" checkbox for
PostgreSQL connections: it runs pg.connect, then pg.addLayer, with
the condition and row limit shown only when ticked. The form shows
the editing connection and a Disconnect button while one is open.
- Edit › Manage Edits gets "Save to PostGIS…" and "Discard PostGIS
Edits…", shown on the desktop while a layer is loaded for editing.
- Command Search opens these forms for pg.connect, pg.addLayer,
pg.saveEdits and pg.discardEdits, and marks them desktop-only on the
web.
TABS is one list again; the Connect PostGIS and Add PostGIS Layer
dialogs and their icons are gone. Command locations, messages and the
docs point to the new places.
I pushed f758348 to this branch to move the editing off its own tab, as suggested above. Home › Add Data › Database… now has a Load for editing checkbox for PostgreSQL connections. It runs pg.connect and then pg.addLayer, with Condition and Most rows shown only when ticked, and the form shows the editing connection with a Disconnect button while one is open. Edit › Manage Edits gets Save to PostGIS… and Discard PostGIS Edits…, shown on the desktop only while a layer is loaded for editing. Command Search opens these forms for the pg.* commands and marks them desktop-only on the web. The PostGIS tab, the Connect PostGIS and Add PostGIS Layer dialogs and their icons are gone, TABS is one list again, and the docs and command locations point to the new places. The commands and the saving logic are unchanged.
Tested end to end against PostgreSQL 16 with PostGIS 3.4, driving the real UI headlessly. The screenshots below follow that run: open Database…, enter the connection, list tables, pick cities, tick Load for editing with pop > 1000000, Add, rename Paris, add Buenos Aires, delete Lima, then Save to PostGIS. Afterwards psql showed exactly those three changes. The live tests (postgis_edits_live, postgis_tab_live, postgis_live_end_to_end), the PostGIS unit tests, cargo xtask layers and the wasm check of rustgis-web all pass.
Add Data ▾, where Database… lives (desktop only)
Database… with Load for editing ticked
Edit › Manage Edits with Save to PostGIS and Discard PostGIS Edits, after editing the layer
Save to PostGIS, with the pending counts
After saving: the status bar reports the save, and Database… shows the editing connection with Disconnect

Summary
Editing PostGIS tables from RustGIS: a PostGIS tab on the ribbon (desktop only) to connect to a database, load a table as a layer you can edit with the usual tools, and save the edits back to the table, refusing conflicts instead of overwriting them. This is the first half of a planned series; creating tables and schema/table/column operations would follow in their own PRs.
Ribbon groups and modal forms
Commands. Everything is a command, so the CLI, Python, MCP and the AI Assistant can use them too.
pg.connect,pg.disconnect,pg.status,pg.tablespg.addLayerpg.pendingEdits,pg.saveEdits,pg.discardEditsHow saving works
A loaded layer keeps the table, its integer primary key, the SRID, and each row's
xminplus a hash of the row as read (PostgisEditonLayer). The hash tells which rows were edited;xmintells whether the database row changed since. The row versions are shared behind anArc, like features, so undo snapshots stay cheap.pg.saveEditsuses a separate writable connection; the existing read connections stay read only. In one transaction it:FOR UPDATEand checks theirxmin;Any conflict rolls the whole save back, and the error lists the rows: changed or deleted in the database since they were read, or key already taken. A row someone else changed that wasn't edited here is not a conflict.
Only the columns whose values changed are written. A
numericread as a float is therefore left alone unless edited. Geometry goes back throughST_Transformto the column's SRID, to single or multi type, and to its dimensions.New rows get their key in this order: the key field's value, else the table's default (
serial/identity), else the feature id. Their features then take the key they were saved with.Dataset::pushhands outmax + 1, so a feature added after a delete could reuse a deleted row's key and be saved as an update of that row. A small hook inSession::guardedgives such features ids past every key.Safety and layering
PGPASSWORD/pgpass only for the database they connected to in this session, never for one named only by a project file.pg.connect,pg.disconnectandpg.saveEditsare user-only: plugins can't run them, and the AI Assistant asks every time.pg.tables,pg.addLayerandpg.discardEditsjoin the database commands, which need both thefilesandnetworkpermissions.TABSleaves PostGIS out on wasm, andrustgis-webstill builds.PostgisSource::read_editableshares row decoding with the streamed reads, which are refactored but otherwise unchanged.Docs: a "The PostGIS tab" section in
docs/user-guide/data.mdand the ribbon table indocs/user-guide/index.md. New strings usetl!, and Indonesian translations are included.I'm happy to move these buttons elsewhere, for example under Data, if a separate tab doesn't fit the ribbon's order.

It covers a combined save (update, delete, insert into aserialPolygon, 3857table) withnumericprecision preserved, then the conflict cases: a row changed elsewhere, a row deleted elsewhere, an unedited row changed elsewhere (no conflict), and a taken key on a table without a default.postgis_live_end_to_endandpostgis_livestill pass.ui_shot, and the documented CLI example was run against a scratch table.Related issue
None yet. This is part of a series toward full PostGIS editing; next come Create Layer (a new table, also from an existing layer), then schema/table/column operations.
