Fixes #939. Supersedes #957 (same work, rebased onto current main with the review fixes; #957's branch would have needed a force-push).

After #905 and #928, three measurement paths still ran on the mean sphere, so the same feature measured about 0.26 % differently depending on the path. They now measure on the WGS 84 ellipsoid:

  • Attribute table edit.calculateGeometry (crates/engine/src/geometry_calc.rs), matching the geoprocessing tool.
  • The measure tool (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs) on the Earth; other bodies keep their sphere and scaling.
  • The network tools (crates/analysis/src/network.rs): edge lengths, snap distances and route lengths.

rustgis-geom

  • wgs84_length_m(pts): each segment solved by wgs84_distance_m.
  • wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2(ring): GeographicLib's PolygonArea in one accumulation, winding-agnostic.

Changes since #957 (review feedback)

  • wgs84_distance_m returns NaN for a non-finite coordinate; an infinite latitude was clamped to a pole and measured as a finite length.
  • A ring with a full-turn longitude edge (-180° to 180°) is measured on the sphere, as before, instead of losing its area.
  • A ring enclosing more than half the ellipsoid keeps its area instead of coming back as the smaller complement.
  • The network snap scan ranks segments by haversine and solves only the winner on the ellipsoid, so a snap no longer costs a geodesic solve per segment.
  • Dropped the commit duplicating the non-finite fixes already on main (fix(geom): preserve invalid haversine distances #946, fix(geom): show nonfinite measurements as unavailable #960).

Testing

cargo test for rustgis-geom and rustgis-analysis (lib) and the engine's geometry_calculator, plus cargo clippy -D warnings on geom, analysis, engine and ui-egui. New geom test wgs84_rings_keep_full_turn_edges_and_large_areas; wgs84_measures_match_geographiclib covers the GeographicLib reference values.

Limits

Spatial Join's largest overlap still measures area on a sphere. On another body all measures follow that body's sphere.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Earth map measurements, geometry calculations, and network route lengths now use WGS 84 ellipsoidal measurements.
    • Geometry areas, perimeters, and lengths use consistent WGS 84 measurements. Polygon rings with an edge spanning a full turn of longitude are measured using a sphere.
    • Measurements on the Moon and other bodies use measurements scaled to the relevant body.
    • WGS 84 distance measurements return an invalid result when coordinates are non-finite.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified how measurement methods differ across tools and planetary bodies, including geometry calculations and network routes.

…d geodesic

The attribute table's Calculate Geometry (edit.calculateGeometry), the map's
Measure tools on the Earth and the network tools' edge and route lengths still
measured on the mean sphere (R = 6,371,008.8 m), after opengeos#905 and opengeos#928 made the
buffers, joins and the geoprocessing Calculate Geometry ellipsoidal. The same
polygon then returned two areas about 0.26 % apart depending on which
Calculate Geometry ran (opengeos#939).

rustgis-geom gains wgs84_length_m (inverse geodesic solves, one per segment)
and wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 (GeographicLib's PolygonArea, the ring closed
along a geodesic, unsigned in either winding), both stopping at non-finite
coordinates as haversine_m now does. The three paths above use them; on the
Moon or Mars the Measure tools keep measuring on that body's sphere and scale,
as before. Network tests keep passing without changes to their tolerances.

Fixes opengeos#939.
wgs84_distance_m returns NaN for non-finite coordinates (an infinite latitude
was clamped to a pole); rings with a full-turn longitude edge fall back to the
sphere and rings over half the ellipsoid keep their area; the network snap scan
ranks segments by haversine and solves only the winner on the ellipsoid.

Performance (medium confidence): the snap scan now avoids a geodesic solve per segment, but graph construction still solves one per segment (here, and again at lines 123 and 140). A line layer near the 10 M-segment cap now costs a geodesic solve per segment during the build, where it previously cost a haversine. That is a large slowdown for gp.route, and the PR does not report timings for it.

Consider measuring a large layer before and after, and either documenting the cost or lowering the cap for this path.

Claude autofix (unclear): Graph build (crates/analysis/src/network.rs:73) now solves one geodesic per segment, which is the cost the PR accepts for the ellipsoid. Whether to measure it, document it or lower the 10 M segment cap for routing is a maintainer decision. No change made.

Code review

Four inline comments are posted. Line 109 in network.rs is outside the diff, so that finding is only in this summary. I could not run the test suite (no shell here), so the test findings are from reading the code.

Bugs

  • Vacuous regression test (crates/geom/src/lib.rs:477, high confidence). The big ring's 10° edges sum to +360° and the closing edge is -360°, so the Chamberlain sum is zero and the small < half assertion passes for the wrong reason. The band assertion compares the full-turn path's sphere result with itself. The complement-selection branch has no real coverage.
  • NaN passes the snap check (crates/analysis/src/network.rs:109, low-medium confidence). if d > snap_m is false for NaN, so a line vertex that is NaN (possible from GPX/KML text such as "NaN") lets the route snap through a non-finite segment. Suggested fix: if !(d <= snap_m). The comment at lines 102–103 also overstates the ordering claim: haversine and the ellipsoid can differ by about 0.5 %, so the scan can pick a slightly farther segment.

Security

  • None found. The new code takes no external input beyond the existing geometry and parameter paths, and it adds no unsafe or panicking calls.

Performance

  • Route graph build (crates/analysis/src/network.rs:73, medium confidence). The snap scan was optimised to avoid a geodesic solve per segment, but graph construction still solves one per segment (also at lines 123 and 140). Near the 10 M-segment cap this is much slower than the old haversine path. The PR reports no timings.
  • Measure tool (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:2608, nit). The area tool calls wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 twice per repaint. Computing both values in one call would avoid the duplicate work.

Quality

  • Full-turn exception not documented (crates/geom/src/lib.rs:284, medium confidence). A ring with a full-turn edge silently gets sphere numbers, but data.md and editing.md now say areas and lengths are WGS 84 with no exception.
  • Misleading comment (crates/geom/src/lib.rs:270, nit). "needs one accumulation, not a solve per vertex" is inaccurate, because PolygonArea also does one inverse solve per edge. The compute(true) boolean is also opaque: the PR does not say what it means.
  • Unclear test comment (crates/geom/src/lib.rs:~528, nit). "a NaN absorbing match on the older behaviour" does not explain what the assertion checks.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The new code has no unwrap/expect outside tests, adds no dependency, and keeps wasm-compatible code. The NaN fix has a regression test. No new user-visible strings were added. The user docs were updated, apart from the full-turn exception above.

Keep the longitude seam out of the full-turn fallback.

For the test ring at 60°N, the vertices run from −180° to 180°. The closing pair triggers full_turn, but it is the same physical point, not an edge around the globe. In geodesic_ring_area_m2, the −360° closing jump cancels the preceding +360° traversal. The helper returns approximately zero area for a polar region. Distinguish a closing seam from an intentional full-turn edge before selecting the fallback. The test at Line 479 accepts zero, so it does not detect this failure. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Claude autofix (unclear): The seam-versus-full-turn distinction needs a design decision. A 36-to-37 vertex polar ring closed at ±180° has a closing edge that a geodesic cannot tell apart from an intentional 360° parallel, so no fallback rule is safe to pick here. No change made; the test ring in crates/geom/src/lib.rs no longer has that closing pair.

Do not use the spherical estimate to choose a polar complement.

A ring with 36 vertices at 60°N, at longitudes −180°, −170°, …, 170°, does not enter the full-turn fallback. Its spherical area is approximately 476 trillion m², while the northern polar cap is approximately 34 trillion m². The comparison therefore selects complement and reports nearly the whole Earth for the cap. Identify polar rings before choosing between the ellipsoidal area and its complement; the ring contract says polar rings use the smaller region in either direction. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Claude autofix (unclear): This asks for a different contract from the one documented on wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2: a ring gives the region it traces, so an eastward 60° N ring measures the southern complement. A smaller-region rule would change that for every polar ring. Left for a maintainer to decide. No change made.

Test coverage, confidence 80%. Neither ring here reaches the ellipsoid branch the test name claims to cover. The closing edge of big runs from 180° back to -180° (a 360° longitude jump), so wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2's full_turn check (line 283) sends it to the sphere fallback. The band above has the same problem. So the "more than half the ellipsoid keeps its area" complement logic (lines 296–300) has no test on the ellipsoid path. Use a ring with no 360° edge, for example longitudes that stop short of ±180°, and assert the complement-vs-area choice against a GeographicLib reference value.

Claude autofix (declined): The ring in this test has no full-turn edge. Its closing edge runs 170° to -180°, a 350° jump, so it takes the ellipsoid branch, and the assertions there check the complement choice against the sphere. I did not add a pinned GeographicLib value because I could not compute one without running the code. The band is the full-turn case and stays on the sphere.

Comment thread crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs Outdated
The polar-ring test used a 37-vertex ring whose closing edge is a full
turn, so the sphere area came back as zero and the "not more than half"
check passed trivially. The test now uses a 36-vertex ring with no
full-turn edge and asserts it measures the traced southern complement,
and the band check is a range against the sphere value.

The measure overlay computed the WGS 84 ring area and perimeter in two
calls per frame. It now takes both from one call.

The user guide names the full-turn exception: a ring with a full-turn
edge (a globe-wide band) is measured on the sphere.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code (network.rs, geometry_calc.rs, mapview.rs, body.rs, geom/lib.rs). I could not build or run the tests here (no shell), so the GeographicLib reference values are unverified.

Bugs

  • Measurement path left on the sphere (outside the diff, 85%). crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs:1126 (distance), :1153 (area and perimeter) still use geodesic_length_m and geodesic_ring_area_m2 on the Earth. The PR moves the attribute table, Measure tool and network tools to WGS 84, but this command returns numbers about 0.3–0.5 % away from them for the same geometry. The PR body does not list this path. I could not post it inline because the file is not part of the diff, so it is raised here. Suggested fix: if body.is_earth() { wgs84_length_m(&pts) } else { body.length(geodesic_length_m(&pts)) }, with the same split for the area.
  • No other correctness problems found. I checked the full-turn fallback, the complement choice, the NaN guards, the snap-scan change in network.rs (the snap check still uses the new distance), and closure of the measure ring in mapview.rs. The ring is closed before measuring, so the Earth and other-body branches agree.

Security

  • None found. The new code has no I/O, no unsafe, and no new unchecked indexing.

Performance

  • Duplicate ring solves each frame (75%). mapview.rs:2654–2658 calls wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 twice per frame for an area measurement, once for area and once for perimeter. Each call does a full polygon accumulation plus a sphere pass. Compute it once and use both values.

Quality

  • Test does not exercise the branch it names (80%). In crates/geom/src/lib.rs, the big ring at line 477 and the band both have a 360° closing edge, so they take the sphere fallback. The ellipsoid complement branch ("more than half the ellipsoid keeps its area") has no test. Use a ring with no ±180° edge and check it against a GeographicLib reference.
  • Docs overstate the scope (60%). data.md and editing.md say areas, perimeters and lengths measure on the WGS 84 ellipsoid. Rings with a full-turn longitude edge still use the sphere for both perimeter and area, as the code and PR body say. The user docs should mention that exception. The imagery path above also contradicts the docs.
  • Comment wording (40%). The network.rs comment says the great-circle scan "orders them as the ellipsoid does". The two can disagree on near-equal segments. The error is bounded by about 0.5 % of the snap distance, so the behaviour is fine, but the comment claims more than holds.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or unsafe in the new non-test code. The engine test uses unwrap, which is allowed in tests.
  • Existing i18n::fmt strings are kept, with no new user-visible literals.
  • The change stays within the layering. geom already depends on geographiclib_rs.

Performance (medium confidence): every shortest_route call now runs one GeographicLib solve per graph segment. Graph build used to be a haversine per segment. The PR's performance argument only covers the snap scan, so this is a per-request cost on large layers, multiplied by the 10M-segment cap. The snap and attach paths are fine, since each uses a handful of solves.

Suggest benchmarking a road-sized layer (about 500k segments) before merging. If the overhead is material, options are to keep haversine for graph weights and solve only the snap endpoints, or to cache the built graph per layer and cost-field.

Claude autofix (unclear): Needs a benchmark on a road-sized layer before deciding. The choice between keeping haversine for graph weights and caching the built graph is a design decision for a maintainer, so no change here.

Bugs

  • Short rings skip the non-finite check. wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 returns (0, 0) for fewer than 3 vertices before it checks for NaN. So [NaN, NaN] yields a plausible number, which breaks the function's own "NaN, never a plausible number" rule. Also, a two-vertex ring's perimeter used to be 2d and is now 0, which the PR does not mention. Confidence: high for the ordering bug, medium for the perimeter change. Inline comment posted with a fix.

Security

  • None found. The new code has no unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe. Inputs are checked for finiteness. Nothing new is added to the wasm build, and no new dependencies were introduced. Confidence: high.

Performance

  • Graph build now solves every segment. shortest_route runs one GeographicLib solve per segment on each call (network.rs:73, plus the attach paths). Before, this was a haversine. The PR's performance argument covers only the snap scan. Confidence: medium. The magnitude is unmeasured, so benchmark a road-sized layer before merging. Inline comment posted.

Quality

  • Overstated comment on full-turn rings. The comment in geometry_calc.rs says these numbers match the geoprocessing tools. For a globe-wide band, the geoprocessing tool unwraps longitudes, which makes the band near zero. This function returns the sphere area instead. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted.
  • The "every geodesic measurement" claim is wrong. raster.measure (crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs:1126 and :1153, Analyze › Mensuration) still measures distance and area on the Earth's mean sphere. The docs say that "all of these read the same number", so either this PR should cover it or the wording should narrow. Confidence: high that the path exists.
  • Nits, grouped:
    • The snap-ranking comment in network.rs:102-103 says "well under a snap tolerance" without a bound. The haversine ordering can differ from the ellipsoid by about 0.5%.
    • In docs/user-guide/data.md, the "See [Editing]… for field" line is reflowed raggedly.
    • The test tolerances of 0.001 m² against reference values rounded to millimetres are tight. They should be fine if the tests pass, but they are brittle across GeographicLib implementations.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the points I checked: no panics in non-test code, no new user-visible strings needing tl!, no wasm-breaking dependencies, and the hostile-parameter tests are not affected. Confidence: high.

Preserve full-turn edges in the perimeter.

For the band tested at Lines 470–474, geodesic_length_m treats both 360° edges as zero-length hops. The helper returns about 4,448 km for the perimeter, omitting both parallel edges. The attribute-table calculator stores that incorrect value. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Measure full-turn parallel edges explicitly and assert the band perimeter in the test.

A ring of fewer than three vertices returned (0, 0) before the
non-finite check ran, so a two-vertex ring with a NaN vertex gave a
plausible zero. The check now comes first, so a broken vertex is NaN
at any ring length, as the function documents.

Also correct the calculator's comment: rings with a full-turn edge
are measured on the sphere here, where the geoprocessing tool unwraps
them. Add a regression assertion for the short-ring case.

Performance (medium, confidence high): this line now runs an inverse geodesic solve for every segment of the layer on every shortest_route call, because the graph is rebuilt per call. The snap scan was made cheap (haversine ranking, one solve for the winner), but the graph build is O(E) solves. The PR notes a few microseconds per solve, so routing on a large line layer (around 1M segments) would add seconds of latency per request. Worth measuring on a realistic network, and considering caching the edge lengths per layer or only solving on the ellipsoid where the result is shown.

Claude autofix (unclear): Not changed. Same as the other performance thread on this line: the per-call graph build is O(E) geodesic solves, and the remedy (caching edge lengths per layer, or solving only where shown) is a design decision. Needs measurement on a realistic network first.

Bugs

  • Low confidence (about 30%): the snap scan ranks segments by haversine, then tests the snap threshold with the ellipsoid distance of that one winner (crates/analysis/src/network.rs:105). A segment that is closer on the ellipsoid but farther by haversine is never considered. The error is at most about 0.7 % of snap_m, and the code comment already says the choice is approximate near the tolerance, so this is a documented trade-off rather than a defect.
  • Checked and looks right: the NaN and infinity guards in wgs84_distance_m and wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2, the full-turn fallback, the complement choice for rings larger than half the ellipsoid, the two-vertex case, and the WGS84_AREA_M2 constant. I could not run the tests, and I could not confirm the geographiclib_rs PolygonArea::compute return order from here. The test expectations are the evidence for that.

Security

  • None found. The change adds no parsing, I/O, or unsafe code. The new code uses get-style access and no unwrap or expect, which matches AGENTS.md.

Performance

  • Medium, high confidence: shortest_route now solves an inverse geodesic for every segment of the layer on every call (crates/analysis/src/network.rs:73). The snap scan was made cheaper, but the graph build is O(E) solves. Posted inline.
  • Low confidence: the Measure overlay now runs one geodesic solve per vertex on every frame while a measurement is drawn (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs, around line 2709). This only matters for very long hand-drawn measurements.

Quality

  • Nit, high confidence: the doc comment on wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 says "not a solve per vertex". PolygonArea solves once per vertex, the same count as summing edges. The real saving is one pass. Posted inline.
  • Nit: the test comment "Ring area: a NaN absorbing match on the older behaviour, then anything broken" in crates/geom/src/lib.rs is hard to parse. Reword it to say what is asserted.
  • Nit: the comment in crates/engine/src/geometry_calc.rs (around lines 80–83) is long and wraps awkwardly. A shorter version would read better.
  • Nit: in docs/user-guide/data.md, the reflow leaves "See Editing for field" on a short line before "calculations and data-design rules." Rewrap the paragraph.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the points I checked. The new NaN behaviour has regression tests. No new UI strings were added, so no tl! wrapping is needed. The geom crate is L0 and stays wasm-compatible, and no dependency changed. I did not run cargo xtask ci, hostile_params_never_panic, or the wasm build, so those gates are unverified.

@giswqs giswqs added the claude-autofix Apply to have Claude merge the base, resolve conflicts and fix review comments (re-add to run again) label Oct 27, 2026
The analysis guide says the WGS 84 measure backs every length and area
the user sees, but the Radius tools still use a local Mercator distance
and raster.measure (Mensuration Tools) still measures on the sphere.
Name both so the guide doesn't overstate the agreement.

Also reword the wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 comment: a ring costs one
geodesic solve per vertex either way, and the saving is a single pass
that yields the perimeter and area together, not fewer solves.

Performance (medium confidence): every edge now costs a WGS 84 inverse geodesic solve during graph build, up to 10M segments under the cap, where it was a haversine before. The snap scan was kept cheap on purpose, but the build is not. Worth a benchmark on a large network, and a note in the PR if the slowdown is acceptable.

Claude autofix (unclear): Not changed. The WGS 84 build cost is the point of #939, and this environment can't run a benchmark. Needs timings on a large network and a maintainer decision on whether the slowdown is acceptable.

Bugs

  • crates/analysis/src/network.rs:105 (pre-existing, low confidence): the snap check at line 110 is if d > snap_m, and NaN > snap_m is false. A route end with a non-finite coordinate therefore skips the snap limit and attaches to an arbitrary segment. The NaN-passes behaviour already existed through haversine_m. The fix is if !(d <= snap_m), which is outside the diff, so it is not posted inline.

Security

  • None found. The changes add no parsing, I/O, or unsafe code.

Performance

  • crates/analysis/src/network.rs:73 (medium confidence): graph build now runs a WGS 84 inverse solve per edge, up to 10M segments, where it was a haversine. The snap scan was kept cheap, but the build was not. A benchmark on a large network would show whether the slowdown is acceptable.

Quality

  • docs/user-guide/editing.md:15 (medium-high confidence): the text says the attribute table uses "the same measure the geoprocessing tools use" and names only the full-turn exception. analysis.md also documents the polar-ring divergence, which the PR body does not mention. The same omission is in data.md around line 406.
  • crates/engine/tests/geometry_calculator.rs:55 (nit): the comment says the test shows the attribute table and the geoprocessing tool "agree". The test compares only against GeographicLib reference values and never runs the geoprocessing tool.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The diff adds no unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe in non-test code. Geom stays pure Rust, so the wasm build is unaffected. No new user-visible strings were added, and no dependencies changed.

Behaviour note (intent, not a defect): the attribute table now deliberately diverges from the geoprocessing tool for rings around a pole, and for full-turn bands. The tool gives the smaller polar cap and an unwrapped band near zero, while the attribute table gives the traced region and the sphere value. geometry_calc.rs and the docs describe this, but the PR body says "matching". Please confirm the divergence is intended.

Checked and not raised: the wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 complement selection, the full-turn detection, the closing-point handling in the measure tool, the NaN guards, and the test reference values. I could not run the tests, because this session has no Bash, and I did not read the geographiclib_rs source, since it lives outside the repo. The PolygonArea call signatures and the reference numbers are therefore unverified.

A route end with a NaN coordinate gave a NaN distance, and the snap
check (`d > snap_m`) is false for NaN, so the end was attached to an
arbitrary segment. The check now fails on NaN too, and a test covers
it.

The attribute table's Calculate Geometry description now names the
polar-ring case, where the geoprocessing tool gives the smaller polar
cap. The Geoprocessing and Data pages link to the exceptions.

Performance (low-medium confidence): graph construction now runs one inverse geodesic solve per line segment, where it used to run a haversine (a few nanoseconds). The wgs84_length_m doc already notes the per-segment cost, but this is the network path, so large networks (millions of segments) will pay seconds on every route build. This is probably an acceptable trade for accuracy. If it is kept, consider stating the cost in the tool docs, or caching the graph per layer and cost field.

Claude autofix (unclear): No change. Graph construction now solves one geodesic per segment (network.rs:73), which is slower on very large networks but is the accuracy trade the measures were meant to make; the cost is already noted on wgs84_length_m in crates/geom/src/lib.rs. Whether to state it in the tool docs or cache the graph per layer and cost field is a design call for a maintainer.

The route snap ranks segments by distance with min_by, which treats NaN
as equal to every candidate. A broken segment (a NaN vertex) listed
first kept its NaN distance as the minimum, so every route end failed
to snap even when a valid line lay within the tolerance.

Rank a NaN distance as infinity instead. A NaN route end still fails
the snap check with the distance error, not "the layer has no lines".
Add a regression test with a broken segment listed before a valid one.

Bug (medium confidence): key() (line 34) casts with as i64, and Rust maps NaN to 0. A vertex with a NaN x therefore joins the node at x≈0 with the same y, and that node keeps whichever coordinate was seen first. If the broken vertex comes first, the node holds NaN, so the valid segments touching it get NaN snap distances and the returned Route::path can contain a NaN point. The NaN-length edges are harmless in Dijkstra, but the node merge is not. Skipping non-finite segments before they enter the graph fixes this and keeps the broken segment out of segs:

Suggested change
let (Some(a), Some(b)) = (w.first(), w.get(1)) else { continue };
let (Some(a), Some(b)) = (w.first(), w.get(1)) else { continue };
if !a.is_finite() || !b.is_finite() {
continue;
}

A regression test would be a valid segment at (0.0, 0.5) next to a broken segment at (NaN, 0.5), checking that the path has no NaN point.

// The scan ranks segments by the cheap great-circle distance, which differs from the

Bug (low confidence, edge of snap tolerance): the scan picks the segment by haversine, then attach rejects the end if the winner's ellipsoid distance exceeds snap_m. A different segment could be within snap_m on the ellipsoid while the haversine winner is just outside it, so a valid end gets rejected. The ellipsoid/haversine gap is up to about 0.7 %, so this shows up near the tolerance. The fix is to solve the ellipsoid distance for the candidates within snap_m * 1.01 by haversine and keep the smallest ellipsoid one, which stays cheap because only a few segments fall in that band.

let (Some(a), Some(b)) = (w.first(), w.get(1)) else { continue };
let (ia, ib) = (node(*a, &mut ids, &mut nodes, &mut adj), node(*b, &mut ids, &mut nodes, &mut adj));
let len = haversine_m(*a, *b);
let len = wgs84_distance_m(*a, *b);

Performance (medium confidence): the graph build now runs a full WGS 84 inverse solve per edge, where it used haversine_m. The snap scan was optimised to avoid this, but the build was not. For a network of millions of segments (the cap is 10 M) this adds seconds on every route request, since the graph is rebuilt each time. The route cost needs ellipsoid lengths, so the fix is to cache the graph per layer and cost field, or to document the cost. Please confirm with a timing on a large line layer.

Quality: the comment says the ellipsoid is used "like every other measurement named geodesic", but geodesic_length_m and geodesic_ring_area_m2 are still spherical in geom, so the comment is inaccurate. The comment also restates the docs' exceptions at length. Suggest something shorter that points at the exceptions:

Nit: "a NaN absorbing match on the older behaviour, then anything broken" is hard to parse. Something like "the older sphere code let f64::min swallow NaN; any broken vertex must give NaN" says what the assertions check.

Code review

Reviewed the 8-file PR (WGS 84 measurement in the attribute table, the measure tool, and the network tools). The geom additions have no unwrap, expect or unsafe, and the new strings are not translated. I could not compile or run the tests: there is no build tool or registry in this session, so geographiclib-rs 0.2.7's PolygonArea signature (Winding, compute(true)) is unverified.

Bugs

  • NaN vertices can merge into a valid node (network.rs:71, medium confidence). key() casts NaN to 0, so a broken vertex joins the node at x≈0. If the broken vertex is seen first, the node keeps a NaN coordinate, which can break snapping and put NaN in Route::path. Suggested fix: skip non-finite segments before they enter the graph. The PR's broken-segment fix does not cover this path.
  • Snap can reject a valid end near the tolerance (network.rs:108, low confidence). Segments are ranked by haversine, but the winner is checked against the ellipsoid distance, so a valid end just inside snap_m can be refused.

Security

  • Nothing found.

Performance

  • Graph build now solves a geodesic per edge (network.rs:73, medium confidence). It used haversine before, and the 10 M-segment cap makes this a multi-second cost per route request on large networks. The PR optimises only the snap scan. Please check this with a timing on a large line layer.

Quality

  • Misleading comment (geometry_calc.rs:37, high confidence). It says "like every other measurement named geodesic", but geodesic_length_m and geodesic_ring_area_m2 are still spherical. The comment also repeats the docs at length. The suggested replacement I posted cites "Spatial Join's neighbours", which is not an accurate reference; the correct one is Calculate Geometry Attributes in docs/user-guide/analysis.md.
  • Unclear test comment (geom/src/lib.rs:540, nit): "a NaN absorbing match on the older behaviour" is hard to parse.

AGENTS.md

  • Issue numbers in code comments (#939) are common in this repo, so I did not flag them.
  • No other violations found. The docs anchor analysis.md#geoprocessing-tools exists.

Thanks for this. I don't think anything below needs to hold it up: the ellipsoid core is right, and the ring cases at the end behave the same on main (e043d0f) or better. I checked the measures against geographiclib 2.1 (a separate implementation of the same algorithm), ran the cases through both Calculate Geometry paths on this branch and on main, and timed the network change.

wgs84_distance_m matches geographiclib to the micrometre (1° on the equator, JFK–Singapore, near-antipodal), and wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 matches it to the m² for a 1°×1° cell in both windings, including the same cell unwrapped across 180°. For ordinary polygons the attribute table now agrees with the geoprocessing tool: 12,308.78 km² for the 1° equator cell, where main gave 12,363.72 km² on the sphere.

Tests (small, for this PR if you like): areas_are_on_the_wgs84_ellipsoid pins areas tightly, but the existing network test's 3,336 ± 20 m (which CodeRabbit flagged) and the calculator's length test at 222–223 km also pass on the sphere (3,335.9 m and 222.39 km, against the ellipsoid's 3,339.6 m and 222.64 km), so tightening them would pin the switch for lengths. A test running edit.calculateGeometry and the gp tool on the same rings would pin #939 itself.

Timing, for the network.rs:73 threads (several bot threads asked for one). One shortest_route over 180,600 segments, release build, median of three:

main this PR
a grid of short edges 40 ms 70 ms
one line of near-antipodal edges, (0,0) ↔ (179.9,0.05) 21 ms 124 ms

So about 1.8× on an ordinary network and about 6× in the worst case: roughly +1.7 s and +6 s per call near the 10M-segment cap if it scales linearly (I timed only 180k). Whether that's acceptable is a judgment call, and I wouldn't hold the PR on it. If it matters, solving an edge's length only when Dijkstra reaches it keeps the lengths exact and helps when the search stops early at the target, and caching lengths per layer, as the bots suggested, covers repeat calls.

Ring cases still open in the threads. The review bot raised the split cell (lib.rs:287) and CodeRabbit the 60°N cases (lib.rs:291, 304); the band with a hole, the north/south difference and the pole-closed cap are new. The docs now list the full-turn and polar differences.

The rings, measured (area in km²)

The Measure tool uses the same function as the attribute table.

Ring (lon, lat) Attribute table Geoprocessing tool geographiclib
36 vertices along 60°N, with a hole of 36 along 80°N error: "invalid geometry measurement" 30,385,510 30,385,510
the same band at 60°S–80°S 30,385,510 30,385,510 30,385,510
36 vertices along 80°N, either direction 506,176,416 3,889,206 3,889,206
36 vertices along 80°S, either direction 3,889,206 3,889,206 3,889,206
1° cell split at ±180°: (179,0),(180,0),(−180,1),(179,1) 257,270,773 12,308.78 12,308.78
60°S cap closed along the pole: …(180,−60),(180,−90),(−180,−90),(−180,−60) 34,167,935 34,274,716 34,274,716

On main the attribute table gives the same error and the same values for rows 1, 5 and 6, and the sphere's versions of rows 2–4 (30,293,411; 506,191,358; 3,874,523).

  • Polar rings: the docs (analysis.md:145, editing.md:16) describe the attribute table as measuring "the region it traces", but tracing a ring either way gives the same area: a ring around a pole gets the side holding the South Pole. So the same ring is the cap at 80°S but nearly the whole Earth at 80°N, and in a northern band the hole (506,176,416 at 80°N) outweighs the shell (475,790,905 at 60°N), so its area goes negative and edit.calculateGeometry stops for the whole layer. The tool's rule, the smaller polar region, would make north and south agree and drop the second documented exception, though it would flip the 60°N example in the docs and the test at lib.rs:484.
  • The full-turn rule (lib.rs:287, any 360° longitude jump) also takes in the split cell and the pole-closed cap, which geographiclib's polygon area handles directly. Narrowing it is a little subtle: my quick try of counting an edge only when it runs along a parallel sent the split cell to the complement (510,053,313), because the sphere estimate at lib.rs:302 still sees the jump, so both checks would need the same rule.
  • Per CodeRabbit's outside-diff note on lib.rs:287, a band's perimeter doesn't follow its parallels the way its area does: (−180,−10),(180,−10),(180,10),(−180,10) gives 4,448 km against 83,364 km for two parallels and two meridians.

Happy to share the probes or turn these rings into tests, if that's useful.
