Fixes #940. Stacked on the WGS 84 measures PR (the first two commits are that work); once it merges, only the last commit remains. Supersedes #958.

lonlat_to_merc passed any finite longitude through, so Web Mercator X ran past the world's ±20,037,508.34 m edge for longitudes outside -180..180 (185° projected to 20,594,105.8 m). Unwrapped longitudes are produced on purpose (geodesic_interpolate, Aeqd::inverse), so a geodesic buffer near 179.9°E came back past the edge.

  • A finite longitude now folds to -180..180 before projecting: 185° projects where -175° does. A non-finite longitude stays non-finite.
  • extent_to_merc keeps an extent's width. Folding each corner on its own turned an extent across the antimeridian (179.9° to 180.1°) into the whole world, which Camera::fit_lonlat would zoom to. The west edge folds and the east edge keeps the extent's own width from it, so that extent stays a ~22 km sliver; an extent wider than the world is the world. Inside -180..180 nothing changes.

merc_to_lonlat still returns the unwrapped longitude, so round trips keep working.

Testing

cargo test -p rustgis-geom -p rustgis-map --lib and cargo clippy -D warnings. New tests: mercator_folds_longitudes_outside_the_world and an_extent_across_the_antimeridian_stays_a_sliver.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Earth length, area, and perimeter measurements—including map measurements, geometry calculations, and network routes—now use WGS 84 ellipsoidal calculations.
    • Map projections and polygon editing handle longitudes and extents that cross the antimeridian more consistently.
    • Distance measurements return NaN for non-finite coordinates; routes with invalid endpoints now report that an endpoint has no place.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guides to explain measurement methods, including spherical calculations for certain polygon rings and Spatial Join’s largest-overlap option.

…d geodesic

The attribute table's Calculate Geometry (edit.calculateGeometry), the map's
Measure tools on the Earth and the network tools' edge and route lengths still
measured on the mean sphere (R = 6,371,008.8 m), after opengeos#905 and opengeos#928 made the
buffers, joins and the geoprocessing Calculate Geometry ellipsoidal. The same
polygon then returned two areas about 0.26 % apart depending on which
Calculate Geometry ran (opengeos#939).

rustgis-geom gains wgs84_length_m (inverse geodesic solves, one per segment)
and wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 (GeographicLib's PolygonArea, the ring closed
along a geodesic, unsigned in either winding), both stopping at non-finite
coordinates as haversine_m now does. The three paths above use them; on the
Moon or Mars the Measure tools keep measuring on that body's sphere and scale,
as before. Network tests keep passing without changes to their tolerances.

Fixes opengeos#939.
wgs84_distance_m returns NaN for non-finite coordinates (an infinite latitude
was clamped to a pole); rings with a full-turn longitude edge fall back to the
sphere and rings over half the ellipsoid keep their area; the network snap scan
ranks segments by haversine and solves only the winner on the ellipsoid.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The polar-ring test used a 37-vertex ring whose closing edge is a full
turn, so the sphere area came back as zero and the "not more than half"
check passed trivially. The test now uses a 36-vertex ring with no
full-turn edge and asserts it measures the traced southern complement,
and the band check is a range against the sphere value.

The measure overlay computed the WGS 84 ring area and perimeter in two
calls per frame. It now takes both from one call.

The user guide names the full-turn exception: a ring with a full-turn
edge (a globe-wide band) is measured on the sphere.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds WGS 84 measurement helpers and applies them to geometry calculations, map measurements, and network routes. It also updates longitude projection and extent handling for unwrapped coordinates, with tests for antimeridian conversion, topology, and editing.

Changes: WGS 84 Measurements

Layer / File(s) Summary
WGS 84 measurement helpers
crates/geom/src/lib.rs
Adds WGS 84 line-length and ring perimeter-and-area helpers. Defines results for degenerate and non-finite inputs, with tests for reference values and edge cases.
Geometry, map, and network measurements
crates/engine/src/geometry_calc.rs, crates/engine/tests/geometry_calculator.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs, crates/analysis/src/network.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md, docs/user-guide/data.md, docs/user-guide/editing.md
Uses WGS 84 measurements for geometry calculations, Earth map measurements, and network route distances. Tests and guides describe the measurement behavior. Non-Earth map measurements retain body-scaled geodesic calculations.

Longitude Projection and Antimeridian Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Longitude projection and extent behavior
crates/geom/src/lib.rs
Adds a folded projection function and changes lonlat_to_merc to preserve unwrapped longitudes. Extent projection preserves finite unwrapped widths, maps spans of at least 360° to the full world, and handles non-finite longitude bounds.
Antimeridian conversion, topology, and editing
crates/analysis/src/convert.rs, crates/analysis/src/topology.rs, crates/engine/tests/antimeridian_edit.rs
Adds tests for antimeridian conversion and editing. Topology point conversion uses lonlat_to_merc and has a test for a point beyond 180°.

Code review

Bugs

  • lonlat_to_merc now folds every caller, including the geo-based tools. crates/analysis/src/convert.rs (to_geo, used by overlay, clip and join paths in tools.rs) goes through this function. geodesic_buffer deliberately returns antimeridian-straddling rings unwrapped, so a ring at 179.9° → 180.1° now folds into a world-spanning shape, where before it was a sliver. Not traced through every call site. Confidence: medium. (inline on crates/geom/src/lib.rs:157)

Security

  • Nothing found. Non-finite inputs are guarded, and wrap_lon is bounded.

Performance

  • Measure Area runs two full ellipsoid passes per frame. overlays calls wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 once for the area closure and again for the perimeter closure, and each call is a per-vertex solve plus a sphere pass. Confidence: high. (inline on crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:2608)

Quality

  • Full-turn rings silently fall back to the sphere. The full_turn branch returns spherical values, up to about 0.5 % off the ellipsoid. The doc comment and docs describe WGS 84 without this exception, and the test tolerance hides it. Confidence: medium. (inline on crates/geom/src/lib.rs:300)
  • Nit: data.md has a short, unevenly wrapped line ending "See Editing for field".

AGENTS.md

  • Overstated docs. editing.md says areas and lengths use "the same measure the geoprocessing tools use", but join.rs still measures Spatial Join lengths and areas on the sphere. Confidence: medium. (inline on docs/user-guide/editing.md:14)
  • Otherwise the change follows the guidelines: no unwrap/expect, no unsafe, hostile_params untouched, and wasm32 is unaffected since it only uses existing geom code. I did not run cargo xtask ci or the tests, since this environment has no build or run tooling.

Cut Mercator geometry before folding its vertices.

For an unwrapped edge from 179.9° to 180.1°, this change projects the second vertex near −179.9°. Flat::project cuts custom-projection geometry at the seam, but it does not cut Mercator geometry. The edge therefore crosses the map instead of remaining a short antimeridian edge; a polygon can fill a world-wide band. Cut Mercator lines and polygons at the seam before projecting their vertices. Claude autofix (unclear): Not changed. Cutting lines and polygons at the antimeridian before projecting is a rendering decision for the map: the fold in lonlat_to_merc stays for the map, and Flat::forward in crates/map/src/projection.rs projects vertices one at a time. Whether the map should cut such shapes, or draw them unwrapped past the world's edge, needs a maintainer's call. The geometry-operation side is fixed separately (see the to_geo thread).

Commit 9f95071

GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit.

A ring of fewer than three vertices returned (0, 0) before the
non-finite check ran, so a two-vertex ring with a NaN vertex gave a
plausible zero. The check now comes first, so a broken vertex is NaN
at any ring length, as the function documents.

Also correct the calculator's comment: rings with a full-turn edge
are measured on the sphere here, where the geoprocessing tool unwraps
them. Add a regression assertion for the short-ring case.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Applied by the claude-autofix workflow.
giswqs and others added 3 commits October 27, 2026 04:04
The early return for short rings made a two-vertex ring measure zero
perimeter, where the mean-sphere version gave twice the segment. It is
a segment there and back, so it now measures 2d on the WGS 84 ellipsoid
with no area, and a single vertex still measures zero.

Also name the full-turn ring exception in the analysis guide, and say
that the network snap choice is approximate: the scan ranks segments by
great-circle distance.

Applied by the claude-autofix workflow.
The two-vertex perimeter test used a segment from (0, 1) to (0, 0),
which runs along a meridian (about 110.6 km per degree), not the
longitude degree its 111,319.49 m reference assumes. Its endpoint now
runs (1, 0) to (0, 0), so the assertion holds.

Polar rings are measured differently by the attribute table (the
region the ring traces) and by Calculate Geometry Attributes (the
smaller polar cap). The docs and the calculator's comment now list
this as an exception, next to full-turn rings.

@giswqs giswqs added the claude-autofix Apply to have Claude merge the base, resolve conflicts and fix review comments (re-add to run again) label Oct 27, 2026
The analysis guide says the WGS 84 measure backs every length and area
the user sees, but the Radius tools still use a local Mercator distance
and raster.measure (Mensuration Tools) still measures on the sphere.
Name both so the guide doesn't overstate the agreement.

Also reword the wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 comment: a ring costs one
geodesic solve per vertex either way, and the saving is a single pass
that yields the perimeter and area together, not fewer solves.

Performance (medium confidence): this runs every frame and makes one geodesic solve per vertex. PolygonArea::add_point plus compute is roughly µs per vertex, and the function also does a sphere pass to choose the complement. A measure polygon with a few thousand clicks therefore costs milliseconds per frame. The comment on this line says it is "one pass", which is true, but it is still O(n) geodesic work per frame. Suggested fix: cache the result and recompute only when pts changes, for example keyed on the vertex count and a revision counter.

Claude autofix (declined): The measure sketch is already cloned and rebuilt every frame (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs, the pts = app.map.sketch.clone() above this line), so the ring pass adds one more O(n) pass beside that. A cache would need new state on the app and invalidation on every sketch edit, which is not worth it for an interactive tool. Happy to revisit if a profile shows it matters.

Two inline comments failed because sharing.rs and render/src/lib.rs are not part of this PR's diff, so GitHub can't anchor a comment there. I'll move those two findings into the summary and not retry them. The final message is next.

Code review

Five findings were posted inline (the three below plus the two whose anchors are in the diff). Two more could not be anchored inline because the files are outside the PR diff. They are listed here with their locations.

Bugs

  • Antimeridian extents are still converted corner by corner, so the fold makes them world-wide. crates/engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs:729 (also sharing.rs:488-489, deeplearning.rs:318, and items.rs:823-827) convert min_x and max_x separately. For an unwrapped 170° to 190° layer, the web export centre moves to 0° and the span becomes 340°. The fix is extent_to_merc, or lonlat_to_merc_unfolded if the output should stay unwrapped. Confidence: medium-high. Not inline (file outside the diff).
  • Rendering now folds unwrapped vertices. crates/render/src/lib.rs:316 and crates/map/src/projection.rs:782 project each vertex with the folding lonlat_to_merc. A buffer that crosses 180° (vertex at 180.1°) now draws as a stripe across the whole world, where it used to draw as a sliver past the edge. The new tests cover the projection only. The doc on Flat::forward_checked (projection.rs:788) is also stale, since Mercator now folds instead of dropping. Confidence: about 60%. Not inline (file outside the diff).

Security

  • None found. The changed code has no unsafe, no new unwraps in non-test code, and no new parsing of external input.

Performance

  • The full-turn branch has no total cap. crates/geom/src/lib.rs:322 allows up to 3600 steps per edge, but nothing caps the whole ring. A file with about 100k ±360° edges costs about 360M haversine calls. Confidence: medium. (Inline.)
  • Measure overlay does O(n) geodesic work every frame. crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:2624 runs wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 per frame. Caching by vertex count or revision would fix it. Confidence: medium. (Inline.)

Quality

  • nearest in shortest_route walks every segment twice, and its comment overstates the result. crates/analysis/src/network.rs:104: the closest point is still the planar projection, so "solved exactly" is wrong. A NaN route end also now reports "the layer has no lines". Confidence: high for the double pass, medium for the message. (Inline, grouped as a nit.)
  • Docs slightly overclaim. docs/user-guide/data.md says all areas, perimeters and lengths are on the ellipsoid. Full-turn rings are measured on the sphere, per the code's own comment. Confidence: medium.

AGENTS.md

  • Nothing violated. No new unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, no new user-visible strings, no new dependency, and layering is intact. The unwraps in the new tests are inside #[cfg(test)].

I did not build or run the tests. I can only read the diff here, so the numeric assertions (GeographicLib reference values) and the geographiclib_rs PolygonArea call signatures are unverified.

A route end with a NaN coordinate gave a NaN distance, and the snap
check (`d > snap_m`) is false for NaN, so the end was attached to an
arbitrary segment. The check now fails on NaN too, and a test covers
it.

The attribute table's Calculate Geometry description now names the
polar-ring case, where the geoprocessing tool gives the smaller polar
cap. The Geoprocessing and Data pages link to the exceptions.

The route snap ranks segments by distance with min_by, which treats NaN
as equal to every candidate. A broken segment (a NaN vertex) listed
first kept its NaN distance as the minimum, so every route end failed
to snap even when a valid line lay within the tolerance.

Rank a NaN distance as infinity instead. A NaN route end still fails
the snap check with the distance error, not "the layer has no lines".
Add a regression test with a broken segment listed before a valid one.

Bug (high confidence): folding here changes behaviour for callers that rely on unwrapped longitudes. The PR changes lonlat_to_merc globally, but several non-analysis callers depend on unwrapped output:

  • render/src/tiles.rs:376 and :408 deliberately unwrap longitudes past 180° ("tiles past 180° are world copies"). After this change they fold back, so the view extent becomes the whole world and the warp can land outside the mosaic.
  • map/src/projection.rs:782 (Flat::forward) is the Mercator path for Flat::project, which draws features. A buffer kept unwrapped at 180.x (which analysis/src/geodesic.rs produces on purpose) is now drawn as a band across the map.
  • analysis/src/topology.rs:208 and :227 (self_intersections, dangles) still use the folding function, while not_covered and clip were switched to the unfolded one. Those two checks can now report false crossings on an antimeridian buffer.

Suggested direction: keep lonlat_to_merc unfolded and fold only at the boundaries where user or file input enters, or switch each unwrapped-geometry caller to lonlat_to_merc_unfolded. Also, the PR's test notes only cover geom and map. Please run render, analysis and engine too.

Performance (low confidence): the 3600-step cap bounds each full-turn edge, not the ring. A hostile file with many full-turn diagonal edges costs roughly edges × 3600 haversine calls, and this runs for every feature in Calculate Geometry. Consider a total budget per ring, or treating a full-turn edge that changes latitude as a bounded set of samples.

Performance (low confidence, nit): on the Earth, Measure now runs a WGS 84 inverse solve per segment, and Area runs a full PolygonArea pass, every frame while the tool is active. Clicked measurements are usually short, so this is probably fine, but a large polygon drawn in the Area tool will cost more per frame than the sphere did. A per-frame cache keyed on the point list would avoid it.

Code review

Bugs

  • High-ish confidence (not run): lonlat_to_merc now folds, which breaks callers that rely on unwrapped longitudes. Posted inline at crates/geom/src/lib.rs:156. Three places are affected:
    • crates/map/src/projection.rs:782 (Flat::forward, the Mercator path behind Flat::project). Features kept unwrapped at 180.x, such as a geodesic buffer across the antimeridian, will now draw as a band across the map.
    • crates/render/src/tiles.rs:374-377 and :408. The code unwraps longitudes on purpose so a view across the antimeridian stays continuous. After folding, the view extent becomes the whole world and the warp can land outside the mosaic. Suggested fix is lonlat_to_merc_unfolded at both lines. This is on unchanged lines, so the comment could not be attached inline.
  • Medium confidence: crates/analysis/src/topology.rs:208 and :227 (self_intersections, dangles) still use the folding function, while not_covered and clip were switched to the unfolded one. An unwrapped ring straddling 180° can gain a world-spanning edge and report a false self-crossing. Also on unchanged lines, so not attached inline.
  • Low confidence: point-in-polygon across the antimeridian is only half handled. not_covered and clip now handle unwrapped points, but a point written as -179.95 inside a polygon at 180.05 is still missed. The new test only uses the unwrapped point.
  • Process: the PR's testing notes cover only geom and map. The changed lonlat_to_merc also reaches render, analysis and engine, so those test suites should run before merging.

Security

  • Nothing found. No new input surfaces, no unsafe, no secrets. The new non-finite guards are a correctness improvement.

Performance

  • Low confidence: the 3600-step cap in wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 bounds each full-turn edge, not the ring. A hostile file costs roughly edges × 3600 haversine calls. Posted inline at crates/geom/src/lib.rs:332.
  • Low confidence, nit: Measure and Area now do per-frame WGS 84 work on the Earth. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:2605.

Quality

  • network.rs nearest now allocates a Vec of every segment per call. This is harmless for two calls per route. The 2% prefilter reasoning is sound and well commented.
  • Test names and comments are clear. Expected values in the new tests look like GeographicLib references, though I could not run them.

AGENTS.md

  • Pass: no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. New code uses ? and get(). No new dependency, and geographiclib_rs is already used. Pure Rust, so wasm is unaffected. Layering is fine (mapview in L6 calls geom). No new UI strings. Error strings in analysis are plain English, matching their neighbours.
  • Doc inaccuracy: "every network tool's edge and route lengths" overstates it. Posted inline at docs/user-guide/analysis.md:137.

Confidence: I did not compile or run tests (no shell here), so the regressions above are from reading the code. The first two are the ones most worth checking with a test.

Thanks for picking up #940 with a fix. Disclosure first: I'm working on #1033, which changes the same analysis projection in convert.rs, and that's how I came to look at this.

This backs up the review bot's comment on geom/src/lib.rs:156 (that folding inside lonlat_to_merc reaches callers outside the diff) with measurements, and adds two callers it didn't list: the edit commands and the convex hull. I ran each case below on this branch (50dee6d) and on main (e281afb).

1. Edits across 180° change the stored shape. A small polygon with unwrapped longitudes 179.6°..180.2° at 10°N (the form your description says a geodesic buffer near 179.9°E comes back in), selected and edited:

Edit main this PR
edit.move 1 km east stored lon 179.609..180.209 (0.600° wide) −179.791..179.609 (359.4° wide)
edit.rotate 10° 0.644° wide 354.0° wide
edit.scale ×1.01 0.606° wide 363.0° wide

Each command reports success, so the layer is saved with a polygon spanning the world. edit.move, edit.rotate and edit.scale (engine/src/cmd/design.rs) go lonlat_to_merc → transform → merc_to_lonlat, and merc_to_lonlat(lonlat_to_merc(185°)) gives −175° here (185° on main), so the round trip now holds only within ±180°.

A regression test for this (passes on main, fails on this branch)
use rustgis_engine::{
    Project, Session,
    data::{Dataset, Feature, Field, FieldType, Geometry, GeometryType, Value},
    geom::Coord,
};
use serde_json::json;

fn across_180() -> (Session, u32) {

    let mut data = Dataset::new("Across", GeometryType::Polygon, vec![Field::new("n", FieldType::Integer)]);
    data.features = vec![Feature { id: 1, geometry: Some(Geometry::Polygon(vec![vec![ring]])), attrs: vec![Value::Int(0)] }].into();
    let mut s = Session::new(Project::new("Across 180"));
    let id = s.map_mut().add_dataset(data);
    s.active_layer = Some(id);
    s.map_mut().editing.settings.enabled = true;
    s.map_mut().layer_mut(id).unwrap().selection = vec![0];
    (s, id)
}

#[test]
fn small_edits_keep_a_polygon_across_180_narrow() {
    for (cmd, params) in

    {
        let (mut s, id) = across_180();
        s.run(cmd, &params).unwrap();
        let Some(Geometry::Polygon(p)) = &s.map().layer(id).unwrap().dataset.features[0].geometry else { panic!("{cmd}") };
        let (lo, hi) = p[0][0].iter().fold((f64::MAX, f64::MIN), |(a, b), c| (a.min(c.x), b.max(c.x)));
        assert!(hi - lo < 1.0, "{cmd}: the polygon is now {:.1}° wide", hi - lo);
    }
}

2. The map's projection and Minimum Bounding Geometry. The same polygon:

main this PR
Projected x span: Flat::Mercator.forward (map/src/projection.rs:782) of 179.6° and 180.2° at 10°N 67 km 40,008 km (+19,992,981 m to −20,015,244 m)
gp.run convexHull (analysis/src/tools.rs:780) 0.6° wide 359.4° wide

The first row bears on CodeRabbit's open thread at lib.rs:158 about cutting geometry at the antimeridian, which was left for a decision. The follow-up commits (b588f7a, 50dee6d) moved to_geo, Clip and not_covered to lonlat_to_merc_unfolded. The hull path wasn't among them, and the bot's earlier lists name more folding callers, as does network.rs:391.

A suggestion: keep lonlat_to_merc unwrapped, as on main, with the contract written on the function (the option #940 raised of "documenting loudly that it does not"), and fold only where a caller needs a point inside −180..180. That would cover the hull and the other callers without a list, and lonlat_to_merc_unfolded would no longer be needed. On the analysis side, I can consolidate the projection into one helper as part of #1033, so this PR doesn't need to.

On the extent part: extent_to_merc keeps an extent's width, which I think is right, so 179°..185° still ends at 20,594,105.8 m, just as on main. The fold itself mainly changes single points and shapes, which is where the callers above are affected.

Before merging: this branch has its own copies of #998's commits, and #998 has since moved on with its own review fixes, so the two now conflict in network.rs, tools.rs, geom/src/lib.rs, mapview.rs and editing.md. This will need a rebase onto #998 once it lands.

What I ran at 50dee6d: the rustgis-geom and rustgis-map lib tests, all of rustgis-analysis (with the GEOS reference suite) and the engine's geometry_calculator test, all passing. The regression test above is the only one of these that sees the problem.

The non-finite guard and its tests, and keeping an extent's width, are worth keeping whichever way the fold goes. Happy to turn the probe into a test in whatever form and place you prefer.

…is still spherical

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e world

Unwrapped antimeridian geometry (kept unwrapped on purpose by
geodesic_interpolate and Aeqd::inverse, as the buffers of a feature near
179.9° E trace it) projected to Web Mercator X metres past the world's
±20,037,508.34 m edge, and extent_to_merc handed such extents to zoom-to as
557 km off beyond the world (opengeos#940).

A finite longitude now folds to -180..180 before projecting, so 185° projects
where -175° projects; a non-finite longitude stays broken rather than quietly
becoming the prime meridian. Longitudes inside the range, and every round trip
through merc_to_lonlat near it, are unchanged.
Address the open review threads on opengeos#1001:

- Geometry operations (to_geo) project without folding the longitude,
  so a shape kept unwrapped across the antimeridian stays one piece.
  The map and extent paths still fold.
- Add lonlat_to_merc_unfolded; lonlat_to_merc folds, then calls it.
- A longitude span of 360 degrees or more is the whole world, at both
  world edges.
- A ring with a full-turn edge measures that edge as one-degree steps
  along its parallel, not zero. The ring stays on the sphere, now
  documented as such.
- Route ends snap by the ellipsoid: segments within 2 % of the nearest
  great-circle distance are solved exactly, so a road the ellipsoid
  ranks nearer is no longer rejected by the snap tolerance.
- The Measure Area overlay computes perimeter and area in one pass.
- editing.md: the WGS 84 measure applies to the network tools and the
  Measure panel; Spatial Join is still spherical.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Applied by the claude-autofix workflow.
A ring whose last vertex names its first one's place (a parallel traced
from -180° round to 180° and back) counted its closing edge as a second
full turn, so the perimeter came out nearly double. The closing edge is
now dropped in that case. Full-turn edges along a parallel use the
closed form instead of 1° steps.

Clip and Not Covered projected points with the folding projection while
their polygons stay unfolded across the antimeridian, so a point at
180.05° was judged outside a polygon spanning 179.9° to 180.1°. Both now
use the unfolded projection.

Route ends measure their candidate segments once, and a non-finite end
reports its own error rather than "the layer has no lines".

Thanks @flight1973, the measurements were exactly what was needed. I took your suggestion.

Pushed 9f95071, rebased onto the updated #998 (the conflicts in network.rs, tools.rs, geom/src/lib.rs, mapview.rs and editing.md are resolved in favour of #998):

  • lonlat_to_merc is unwrapped again, as on main, with the contract on the function. edit.move/rotate/scale, the convex hull and the other shape paths keep a polygon across 180° narrow.
  • New lonlat_to_merc_folded for callers that need one point inside −180..180; lonlat_to_merc_unfolded is gone.
  • extent_to_merc still keeps an extent's width, and the non-finite guard stays.
  • Added your regression test as crates/engine/tests/antimeridian_edit.rs; it passes with the geom tests (22).

I'll leave consolidating the analysis projection to your #1033, as you offered.

Quality (high confidence): the comment says the west edge "folds into the world", but sw comes from lonlat_to_merc, which no longer folds (see line 164). An extent starting at 185° keeps its unwrapped x past the world's edge. The code is right; the comment is not.

Bugs / quality (high confidence): lonlat_to_merc_folded has no callers outside its own geom test. The fold the PR title and body describe is therefore not wired into any code path, and the body's first bullet ("a finite longitude now folds… 185° projects where -175° does") describes lonlat_to_merc, which does not fold in this head. The body also cites mercator_folds_longitudes_outside_the_world, which does not exist; the test here is mercator_keeps_longitudes_outside_the_world_unless_folded. Either wire the folded variant into the single-point callers that need it, or drop it. Update the title and body to match the final commit.

Quality (high confidence): this is a no-op. lonlat_to_merc is already imported at line 6 and has never folded, so the polygons and points were already projected the same way. The new test a_point_across_the_antimeridian_is_covered_by_its_polygon also passes on the base branch, so it does not guard this change. Revert the line; keep the test if you want the coverage.

Performance (medium confidence): the 3600-step cap applies per edge, with no budget per ring. A hostile ring with N full-turn edges that change latitude costs up to N × 3600 haversine calls, and measure runs this for every feature in a Calculate Geometry pass. Consider a total step budget per ring, or a fall-back to the sphere's area with a coarser step when the budget is exceeded.

Quality (medium-high confidence): this adds a second WGS 84 ring measure. analysis/src/tools.rs calculate_geometry (line 1467) already measures the same thing with geo's GeodesicArea, and it handles dateline and polar rings differently. The PR's own docs now list the cases where the attribute table and the tool disagree. Two implementations that diverge on exactly the edge cases are how the numbers drift apart again. Consider moving one ring measure into geom and calling it from both places. Also, the "perimeter" branch computes the area too, and the "area" branch computes the perimeter; that is wasted work per feature.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code (geom, analysis/tools.rs, camera.rs, topology.rs). I could not build or run the tests (no shell here), so the findings below come from reading the code.

Bugs

  • PR title and body don't match the code (high). The title and the first body bullet say longitudes fold in lonlat_to_merc. The final commit reverts that: lonlat_to_merc stays unwrapped, and the fold lives only in lonlat_to_merc_folded, which has no callers outside its own test. The body also cites mercator_folds_longitudes_outside_the_world, which doesn't exist; the actual test is mercator_keeps_longitudes_outside_the_world_unless_folded. Wire the folded variant in where it's needed, or drop it, and update the title and body.
  • extent_to_merc comment is wrong (high). It says the west edge "folds into the world". The west edge is projected by the unfolded lonlat_to_merc, so an extent starting at 185° is not folded. The code is correct; the comment is not.
  • topology.rs change is a no-op (high). lonlat_to_merc was already imported and has never folded, so rustgis_geom::lonlat_to_merc behaves the same. The new test also passes on the base branch, so it doesn't guard anything this PR changes.

Security

  • None found. The new NaN and non-finite guards are sound, and the new code has no unwrap or expect outside tests.

Performance

  • Full-turn ring step cost (medium). The 3600-step cap applies per edge with no budget per ring. A hostile ring with many full-turn edges costs up to N × 3600 haversine calls per feature.
  • Wasted work in geometry_calc (low). The "area" branch computes the perimeter and the "perimeter" branch computes the area, each discarding the other.

Quality

  • Two WGS 84 ring measures that disagree (medium-high). geometry_calc::measure and analysis/tools.rs::calculate_geometry now measure the same thing differently on full-turn and polar rings. The docs list the disagreements. Consider one shared implementation in geom.
  • Docs formatting (low). editing.md line 711 is about 170 characters, far past the file's ~100-column wrap. In data.md, the new "See [Editing]…" sentence is orphaned on a short line.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the points I checked: no unwrap/expect in non-test code, NaN regression tests for each crash fix, no new dependencies, no wasm-breaking std calls, and no new user-visible strings.

Return NaN for a single broken vertex in wgs84_length_m.

wgs84_length_m returns 0.0 for a one-vertex slice that contains a non-finite coordinate. The fold over windows(2) yields no segment, so the broken vertex is never checked. The sibling functions in this file return NaN for the same input. Add a finite check over all vertices before the fold.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Test the ±360° longitude copies of each point in not_covered.

not_covered projects each point once, without folding. A point stored at −179.95° lands near −20,031,920 m. A polygon ring kept at 179.9°–180.1° spans about 20,026,350 to 20,048,646 m, so the point is reported uncovered even though it lies inside the ring. Test the point's copies shifted by ±2πR (about ±40,075,017 m), and accept a match in any copy.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 40638b181c54); the change keeps it reachable.

Assert that each edit changes the coordinates.

The only geometry check is hi - lo < 1.0. The fixture polygon is already 0.6° wide, so an edit that returns Ok without changing any coordinate still passes the test. The test does not confirm that edit.move, edit.rotate, or edit.scale changed the geometry.

Add an assertion that the coordinates differ after each edit. Full transform checks are not needed.

Reduce large longitudes modulo 360 before wrap_lon.

lonlat_to_merc_folded passes absolute longitudes to wrap_lon. For very large finite inputs, (d + 180.0) loses precision, so the folded longitude can be wrong. At 2^60 degrees, the result is about 76° off.

Route two-vertex full-turn rings through the full-turn branch.

The two-vertex shortcut runs before the full-turn check. For (-180°, 10°) and (180°, 10°), it returns perimeter 0. A three-vertex ring with the same full-turn edge returns the parallel length. Add a test for this two-vertex input.

Skip the appended first vertex when the sketch already returns to its start.

When the last sketch vertex names the first vertex's place and lies exactly 360° from it at the same latitude, appending the first vertex adds a second edge from that vertex back to the start. wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 counts that edge as a full parallel circuit. Its closing-edge exclusion removes only the wrap pair, so the perimeter includes the parallel twice.

Omitting the append in this case removes the duplicate edge and keeps the wrap pair excluded. Normal closure does not change: the append still runs when the last vertex does not name the first vertex's place. Sketches with fewer than three vertices keep their current result.

This requires exact longitude equality between the two vertices, using the same (l.x - f.x) % 360.0 == 0.0 test as the helper. Whether pointer input reaches that equality is not established. The predicate mirrors the helper's private same_place closure.
