fix(geom): lonlat_to_merc folds a longitude outside -180..180 into the world - #958
Fixes#940. lonlat_to_merc passed any finite longitude through unchanged, so Web Mercator X metres ran past the world's ±20,037,508.34 m edge for longitudes outside −180..180 — 185° projected to 20,594,105.8 m, and extent_to_merc of an 179°…185° extent came out 667,916.9 m wide, all east through 185°.
Unwrapped longitudes are produced on purpose inside the codebase: geodesic_interpolate keeps a path's longitude next to its first point, and Aeqd::inverse keeps longitudes within 180° of the centre's, so a geodesic buffer of a feature near 179.9°E that crosses the antimeridian comes back with vertices past 180 — and zoom-to-layer on the result projected past the world edge.
A finite longitude now folds to −180..180 (wrap_lon, already in the file) before projecting: 185° projects exactly where −175° does, and a folded extent stays inside the world.
Longitudes inside −180..180 project as before, to the bit.
merc_to_lonlat still returns the unwrapped longitude (its X maps one to one back through the fold), so round trips keep working: the fold is idempotent with wrap_lon (wrap_lon(185 + 360) folds to 185 again and projects the same).
Rendering and tile fetching already wrapped; this only affects extents, the camera and measuring, which took the raw metres.
Open to review
The issue was filed as a question, so the alternative — every caller folds its own longitudes — is still open: with this PR, callers that need an unwrapped projection for extent topology (an extent crossing the antimeridian as min/max numbers still maps to the wrong side; wrapping picks the other side of the ring) would now get the folded side. I did not find such a caller: the round-trip tests in map, engine and analysis all stay near their origins. If one exists, folding in extent_to_merc instead of (or together with) lonlat_to_merc would be the shape to discuss.
Testing
rustgis-geom: mercator_folds_longitudes_outside_the_world — lonlat_to_merc(185, 0) equals lonlat_to_merc(-175, 0) to 1e-6 m, stays inside ±MERCATOR_R·π, and NaN and ±inf longitudes stay non-finite; mercator_roundtrip unchanged.
cargo test -p rustgis-geom (19 tests), cargo fmt, cargo clippy -p rustgis-geom --all-targets, and the wasm build of rustgis-geom pass.
The wasm-dependent code paths below apps/ compile unchanged (crates/geom only).

Improvements
Earth-based geometry measurements—including lengths, perimeters, and areas—now use the WGS 84 ellipsoid for more consistent results across measurement and analysis tools.
Network route distances use ellipsoidal measurements.
Out-of-range longitudes are wrapped to the standard longitude range. Non-finite measurement values display as an en dash.
Documentation
Updated guidance clarifies measurement methods and notes that spherical-area results may differ from ellipsoidal results.
…t as an em dash
A single NaN or infinite vertex used to measure as 20,015,114.442 m -- a quarter
of the Earth's circumference -- because haversine_m's h.sqrt().min(1.0) fell into
f64::min's NaN rule and turned the broken haversine h into asin(1). The measure
tool, the attribute table's Calculate Geometry and the network tools sit under
it, and WKB-based files can carry such vertices, so a corrupt file measured
silently plausible lengths.
Now a non-finite endpoint keeps the haversine result NaN: sums and panels stay
visibly broken and comparisons (NaN <= r) exclude the point, while finite edges
next to a broken one keep measuring. The formatters format_distance,
format_area, format_lonlat and format_dms show an em dash for non-finite values,
never "NaN km" or "NaN deg", as the router's formatter already avoided.
Fixesopengeos#937. Fixesopengeos#938.
…d geodesic
The attribute table's Calculate Geometry (edit.calculateGeometry), the map's
Measure tools on the Earth and the network tools' edge and route lengths still
measured on the mean sphere (R = 6,371,008.8 m), after opengeos#905 and opengeos#928 made the
buffers, joins and the geoprocessing Calculate Geometry ellipsoidal. The same
polygon then returned two areas about 0.26 % apart depending on which
Calculate Geometry ran (opengeos#939).
rustgis-geom gains wgs84_length_m (inverse geodesic solves, one per segment)
and wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 (GeographicLib's PolygonArea, the ring closed
along a geodesic, unsigned in either winding), both stopping at non-finite
coordinates as haversine_m now does. The three paths above use them; on the
Moon or Mars the Measure tools keep measuring on that body's sphere and scale,
as before. Network tests keep passing without changes to their tolerances.
Fixesopengeos#939.
…e world
Unwrapped antimeridian geometry (kept unwrapped on purpose by
geodesic_interpolate and Aeqd::inverse, as the buffers of a feature near
179.9° E trace it) projected to Web Mercator X metres past the world's
±20,037,508.34 m edge, and extent_to_merc handed such extents to zoom-to as
557 km off beyond the world (opengeos#940).
A finite longitude now folds to -180..180 before projecting, so 185° projects
where -175° projects; a non-finite longitude stays broken rather than quietly
becoming the prime meridian. Longitudes inside the range, and every round trip
through merc_to_lonlat near it, are unchanged.

Walkthrough
Geometry helpers now provide WGS 84 length and area measurements and fold finite longitudes into the −180° to 180° range. Geometry calculations, Earth map readouts, and network routes use WGS 84 measurements. Non-finite values receive explicit handling in calculations and formatted output.
Changes: WGS 84 measurements
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Geometry helpers and input handling crates/geom/src/lib.rs
Added WGS 84 polyline length and ring perimeter/area helpers. Finite out-of-range longitudes are folded into range. Non-finite inputs produce NaN measurements or an en dash in formatted output. Added tests for these cases.
Geometry calculations and Earth map readouts use WGS 84 measurements. Map readouts use body-scaled geodesic measurements for other bodies. Tests check WGS 84 reference values, and the guides describe the measurement surfaces.
The change makes length and area measurements use the WGS 84 ellipsoid, but very large or world-spanning polygons can report wrong areas, and antimeridian geometry may draw world-spanning segments in Mercator views. Fix the area edge cases and the projection seam handling before merging. The imperial-unit and documentation issues are minor.

Explanation
Linked issue #940 asks whether callers handle unwrapped longitudes, or whether lonlat_to_merc should fold them. The issue states that folding into -180..180 here, or documenting the behavior, would resolve the past-world X metres symptom. The PR folds finite longitudes in lonlat_to_merc (crates/geom/src/lib.rs). The diff uses wrap_lon only when c.x is finite and outside -180..180. Non-finite longitudes pass through unchanged. The doc comment cites #940. The test mercator_folds_longitudes_outside_the_world checks that lonlat_to_merc(185, 0) equals lonlat_to_merc(-175, 0) within 1e-6 m. It also checks that the result stays within ±MERCATOR_R·π, and that NaN and infinite longitudes stay non-finite. Longitudes in range take the unchanged path. The extent case no longer yields X beyond the world edge, because extent_to_merc uses lonlat_to_merc. Known limitation: a min/max extent that crosses the antimeridian (for example 179..185) still maps to the wrong side (width about 354° rather than 6°). The PR description records this tradeoff, and the issue treats the fold as a question. This limitation does not block the issue's stated fold option. Scope of evidence: the lonlat_to_merc hunk and its test were read from the whole-PR diff. Caller behavior was not re-audited beyond the PR's own description.

Explanation
The whole-PR diff (merge base 342b2b2 to head 2748d09) contains changes that do not implement #940. Commit 785751e ("measure on the WGS 84 ellipsoid everywhere") and the related file changes do the following. crates/analysis/src/network.rs replaces haversine_m with wgs84_distance_m for route edges, snap distances, attachment edges and direct routes (confirmed by diff). crates/engine/src/geometry_calc.rs and crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs switch area, perimeter and length measures to new WGS 84 helpers, and crates/engine/tests/geometry_calculator.rs adds ellipsoid tests. Docs in docs/user-guide/analysis.md, data.md and editing.md describe the new measure. Commit 5b320fb ("non-finite coordinates are no distance", citing #937) changes haversine_m to return NaN for non-finite input. It also changes format_distance, format_area, format_lonlat and format_dms to render an en dash for non-finite input, and adds tests for these. The new public functions wgs84_length_m and wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2 also belong to this group. None of these changes is needed for the lonlat_to_merc fold. The PR description says the change covers only crates/geom and that apps/ paths are unchanged. This conflicts with the diff, which also touches crates/analysis, crates/engine, crates/ui-egui and docs. Evidence limit: the network.rs and crates/geom diffs were read directly. The engine, ui-egui, tests and docs changes are known from the change summary and were not diffed directly.

Remove crates/analysis/src/network.rs, crates/engine/src/geometry_calc.rs, crates/engine/tests/geometry_calculator.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs, and the docs edits. In crates/geom/src/lib.rs, keep only the lonlat_to_merc change, its doc comment, and mercator_folds_longitudes_outside_the_world. Remove the haversine_m non-finite guard, the format_* en-dash changes, wgs84_length_m, wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2, the PolygonArea import, and their tests. Update the PR description so it matches the reduced diff.

Unwrapped extents now zoom to the whole world (crates/geom/src/lib.rs:157, inline comment posted). extent_to_merc folds each corner separately, so a 179.9°…180.1° extent becomes x ∈ [−20.03M, +20.03M] instead of a ~22 km sliver. Zoom-to-layer goes through Camera::fit_lonlat and engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs:729, so this is a regression on the path the PR targets. Confidence: high on the arithmetic, medium on whether the sliver zoom was intended.
Low confidence:wgs84_distance_m has no explicit non-finite guard, unlike haversine_m. The new tests assert NaN propagation through geographiclib-rs, and I could not run them, so that depends on the library's branches. Confidence: low.
Security
None found. The changes are numeric and take no external input beyond what was already parsed.
Performance
An ellipsoid solve per segment on every snap (crates/analysis/src/network.rs:99, inline comment posted). nearest now runs wgs84_distance_m for every segment, twice per route, where it used to run haversine_m. Suggested fix: find the winner with haversine and solve only for it. Confidence: high on direction, medium on magnitude.
Overlay computes the ring twice per frame (crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:2575-2576). measure_ring_area and measure_ring_perimeter each call wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2, which computes both values. Calling it once and using both fields halves the work. Confidence: high. Minor.
Quality
The comment at crates/geom/src/lib.rs:517 ("a NaN absorbing match on the older behaviour") is unclear. Suggest: "Ring area: a NaN vertex or an infinite one is no area either." Confidence: high. Nit.
docs/user-guide/analysis.md says "every network tool's edge and route lengths" now use WGS 84. The diff changes only shortest_route, so I could not confirm the claim covers the other network tools. Confidence: low. Nit.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The changed non-test code has no unwrap, expect or indexing added. Each NaN and fold fix has a regression test. The change stays in geom (L0) and geographiclib_rs is already a dependency, so the wasm build should be unaffected. No new user-visible strings were added.
I had no execution tool, so I did not run tests, clippy or the wasm build. The test constants are unverified.

Preserve full-longitude ring edges.
For a band ring with corners at −180° and 180°, each horizontal edge spans 360° in the input. PolygonArea::add_point instead connects those equivalent endpoints by the inverse geodesic, so the band loses its area. The existing geodesic_ring_area_m2 explicitly preserves 360° edges. Handle full-longitude bands separately, or represent their traversal with intermediate vertices or directed edges. (docs.rs)

Claude autofix (unclear): Agreed that the bug is real: GeographicLib reads a longitude step modulo 360, so a -180 to 180 edge has zero length and a world-wide band loses its area in wgs84_ring_perimeter_area_m2. Not changed, because the fix is a representation choice for a maintainer: split full-turn edges into intermediate vertices (which step count and how it is bounded for hostile input), or add a closed-form band term. The sphere version's test (ring_area_across_the_antimeridian) has no WGS 84 counterpart yet; a test should assert the band area (about 8.9e13 m2 for ±10°).

Do not take the absolute value of signed area for large rings.
For a ring enclosing more than half the Earth, GeographicLib documents that compute(true) can return the complement as a negative area. area.abs() then reports the smaller region, contrary to the geometry-calculator guide’s stated behavior for non-polar large regions. Preserve the intended ring orientation and use the library’s large-polygon area convention; add a greater-than-hemisphere case. Simply switching to compute(false) without resolving winding can turn a small reversed ring into its complement. (docs.rs)

Claude autofix (unclear): Not changed. Whether compute(true) returns the complement as a negative area for rings larger than a hemisphere depends on GeographicLib's sign and reverse convention, which can't be checked here. The docs promise that non-polar regions larger than half the Earth keep their full area. Settling it needs a test with a ring over 180° of longitude, or a ring of more than a hemisphere, asserting the expected area, and a maintainer decision on the convention.

Apply the non-finite display rule to imperial units.
These guards produce an en dash only when a caller uses geom::format_distance or geom::format_area. The map’s imperial formatters in crates/ui-egui/src/measure_units.rs:22-32 and :45-56 bypass both guards. A non-finite measurement can therefore still appear as NaN mi or NaN mi² in an imperial map readout. Add the same finite check before the imperial unit branches.

Claude autofix (declined): Already guarded. The imperial branches in crates/ui-egui/src/measure_units.rs are only reached when the value is finite: distance (line 23) and area (line 46) hand non-finite values to geom::format_distance and geom::format_area first, which return the dash. So no NaN mi or NaN mi² can appear. The dash is an em dash, not an en dash.
Projecting an extent kept unwrapped across the antimeridian folded its
east edge to the far side, so a 179.9..180.1 extent zoomed to the whole
world. Both edges now move by the same whole turn and project without
folding.
Mercator geometry is cut at the antimeridian before projection, as the
custom projections already are, so a line unwrapped across 180 is drawn
on both sides rather than as a line across the map.
Network snapping ranks segments with haversine and solves the ellipsoid
distance only for the winning point, which keeps snaps fast on large
layers.
The editing guide now says Spatial Join's Largest overlap measures on a
sphere, not the WGS 84 ellipsoid.

Bug (medium-high confidence):d > snap_m is false when d is NaN, so a route end whose nearest segment has a non-finite vertex passes the snap check. Before this PR haversine_m absorbed NaN into a finite value, which was rejected here. Now NaN flows through nearest (its partial_cmp(...).unwrap_or(Equal) makes a NaN distance compare equal to everything, so min_by can pick a broken segment) and the route is built on NaN coordinates or lengths.
Suggested fix: reject NaN as well, and skip non-finite distances in nearest:
Suggested change
ifd > snap_m {
if!(d <= snap_m){
Also worth a regression test: a line layer with a vertex like (NaN, 0) should give an Err, not a route. AGENTS.md asks for one with every crash/robustness fix.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (medium confidence): non-finite vertices are still inserted as graph nodes. key(NaN) becomes (0, 0), so a NaN vertex can merge with a real node at the origin, and every edge touching it gets a NaN wgs84_distance_m length. Those NaN costs then go into the Dijkstra heap, whose Ord treats NaN as equal to everything.
Suggested fix: split the line at non-finite vertices, the way the renderer and antimeridian::cut do, so such edges are never built:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (high confidence, minor): the Measure overlay runs every frame. For Earth, the Area tool now runs the full PolygonArea accumulation twice: once in measure_ring_area and again in measure_ring_perimeter. Computing both from one call halves that work and keeps the two numbers from one solve:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit): the wrap is written out again here, but wrap_lon already does it. Shifting both edges by the same amount that moves min_x into −180..180 reuses it and needs no turns variable:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (low confidence, minor): the doc comment says a broken vertex gives NaN, but ring.len() < 3 returns (0.0, 0.0) first, so a two-vertex ring [NaN, NaN] measures as zero. Checking finiteness first keeps the rule consistent with wgs84_length_m and haversine_m:
PR #958 folds longitudes outside −180..180 in lonlat_to_merc (#940). The diff also switches Earth measurements to the WGS 84 ellipsoid (#939), adds NaN guards to haversine_m (#937), cuts Mercator features at the antimeridian, and updates the docs. Two inline comments raise the main correctness concerns; the nits are grouped below.
Bugs
NaN bypasses the snap check in shortest_route (network.rs:109, medium-high).if d > snap_m is false for NaN, so a route end whose nearest segment has a non-finite vertex is accepted. The old haversine_m returned a finite value there, which was rejected. Now NaN reaches the nearest search and the Dijkstra heap. Fix: if !(d <= snap_m), plus a regression test with a NaN vertex.
Non-finite vertices become graph nodes (network.rs:71, medium).key(NaN) collapses to (0, 0) and NaN-length edges enter the heap. Fix: skip segments with a non-finite endpoint.
PR description is wrong about merc_to_lonlat (high). It says the round trip keeps the unwrapped longitude, but merc_to_lonlat(lonlat_to_merc(185°)) returns −175°. The same place, but not the same number, so the description should say so.
Security
None found. Inputs are validated at the command layer (workflows.rspoint()), and the NaN paths don't panic.
Performance
Measure overlay computes the ring twice per frame (mapview.rs:2654, high, minor). The Area tool runs the full PolygonArea accumulation once for area and once for perimeter. One closure returning both fixes it.
Mercator features are always passed through cut (projection.rs:855, low). This allocates for every feature on every projection, even when nothing crosses the edge. Worth measuring on a large layer.
Quality
Extent wrap duplicates wrap_lon (geom/lib.rs:180, nit). Shifting by wrap_lon(min_x) - min_x is simpler and avoids large turns values.
Degenerate ring ignores NaN (geom/lib.rs:289, low). A two-vertex ring of NaN returns 0 rather than NaN, contrary to the doc comment.
Unclear comments (nit). The format_distance comment cites "the router's formatter", and the geom test comment "A NaN absorbing match on the older behaviour" is hard to follow. Reword both.
AGENTS.md
No regression test for the network NaN case. AGENTS.md asks for one with every robustness fix, and the new NaN handling in shortest_route has none.
Superseded by #1001: rebased onto current main and the WGS 84 measures PR (#998), with extent_to_merc fixed so an extent across the antimeridian stays a sliver instead of spanning the world.

Summary
Fixes #940.
lonlat_to_mercpassed any finite longitude through unchanged, so Web Mercator X metres ran past the world's ±20,037,508.34 m edge for longitudes outside −180..180 —185°projected to 20,594,105.8 m, andextent_to_mercof an 179°…185° extent came out 667,916.9 m wide, all east through 185°.Unwrapped longitudes are produced on purpose inside the codebase:
geodesic_interpolatekeeps a path's longitude next to its first point, andAeqd::inversekeeps longitudes within 180° of the centre's, so a geodesic buffer of a feature near 179.9°E that crosses the antimeridian comes back with vertices past 180 — and zoom-to-layer on the result projected past the world edge.wrap_lon, already in the file) before projecting: 185° projects exactly where −175° does, and a folded extent stays inside the world. What does not change
merc_to_lonlatstill returns the unwrapped longitude (its X maps one to one back through the fold), so round trips keep working: the fold is idempotent withwrap_lon(wrap_lon(185 + 360)folds to 185 again and projects the same).Open to review
I did not find such a caller: the round-trip tests in
map, engineandanalysisall stay near their origins. If one exists, folding inextent_to_mercinstead of (or together with)lonlat_to_mercwould be the shape to discuss.Testing
rustgis-geom:mercator_folds_longitudes_outside_the_world—lonlat_to_merc(185, 0)equalslonlat_to_merc(-175, 0)to 1e-6 m, stays inside ±MERCATOR_R·π, and NaN and ±inf longitudes stay non-finite;mercator_roundtripunchanged.cargo test -p rustgis-geom(19 tests),cargo fmt,cargo clippy -p rustgis-geom --all-targets, and the wasm build ofrustgis-geompass.apps/compile unchanged (crates/geomonly).Summary by CodeRabbit
