(There is no need to review file ‎plan-upgrade-valgrind.md.)

Past Valgrind merges skipped the merge doc's "Remove files that have been removed upstream" step, so Fjalar still tracks 32 files under valgrind/ that upstream VALGRIND_3_23_0 no longer has. Some have been there since the 3.8.1 merge (2013).

They cause real regtest failures:

  • The stale .vgtest files make cachegrind/tests/ann1, cachegrind/tests/diff, and memcheck/tests/memalign2 run and fail.
  • The files cause 27 "... is missing in EXTRA_DIST" errors in the post-regtest makefile-consistency check.

It should merge before the expected-failure lists for #96's regtest CI jobs are generated, since it changes which tests fail.

This PR is based on master and doesn't depend on any other open PR. #103 depends on it and contains its commits.

How the files were found

git clone -b VALGRIND_3_23_0 --depth 1 https://sourceware.org/git/valgrind.git v323
comm -23 <(git ls-files valgrind | sed 's|^valgrind/||' | grep -v '^fjalar/' | sort) \
         <(git -C v323 ls-files | sort)

That prints these 32 files plus REVISION, which is Fjalar's own and stays.

Removed files
valgrind/cachegrind/cg_merge.c
valgrind/cachegrind/tests/ann1.post.exp

valgrind/none/tests/s390x/op00.stderr.exp1
valgrind/none/tests/s390x/op00.stderr.exp2

No build file refers to any of them except two dead memalign2_CFLAGS lines in memcheck/tests/Makefile.am, which upstream also has and which are therefore left alone; the only references are between the removed files themselves (e.g., ann1.vgtest uses cgout-test).

The PR also removes the .gitignore entry for the memcheck/tests/memalign2 binary, which is no longer built. (#96 adds a line next to that entry, so whichever of the two lands second may need a trivial conflict resolution.)

It also updates the merge doc's "Remove files that have been removed upstream" step to use the comm command above. The old command diffed the previous and new Valgrind releases, so it never again listed a file that one merge forgot to remove; that is how these files accumulated. The step says to use rm, not git rm, because the git.script from make git-update runs git rm on some of the same files. It also lists the files in Fjalar's own copy of memcheck (valgrind/fjalar/) that the target memcheck does not have. The upgrade plan's step 2 points to this section. Its step 10 stages the removals with git add -u -- valgrind (the git.script does not cover files that are in neither valgrind-old nor valgrind-new, which step 2 removed with rm), and then checks that the comm command prints nothing.

Testing

Past Valgrind merges skipped the "remove files that have been removed
upstream" step, so Fjalar still tracked 32 files that upstream
VALGRIND_3_23_0 does not have, some since the 3.8.1 merge (2013).

They caused real regtest failures: the stale .vgtest files made
cachegrind/tests/ann1, cachegrind/tests/diff, and memcheck/tests/memalign2
run and fail, and the files caused 27 "... is missing in EXTRA_DIST"
errors in the post-regtest makefile-consistency check.

Found with:
  comm -23 <(git ls-files valgrind | sed 's|^valgrind/||' | grep -v '^fjalar/' | sort) \
           <(git -C valgrind-3.23.0 ls-files | sort)
(REVISION is Fjalar's own and stays.)

📝 Walkthrough

The Valgrind upgrade documentation and plan now describe comparing Fjalar’s tracked Valgrind files with a target release and removing files that are absent upstream. The changes delete the Cachegrind merge utility and its test files. They also delete test programs, configurations, filters, and expected-output fixtures from several Valgrind tools.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c4f39

The documented upgrade check can produce false stale-file errors until removals are staged, but the workaround is small and localized.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo: The menu entry now names the step as removing files that the target Valgrind release does not have, replacing the upstream-removal wording.
  • observed — Modified behavior in doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo: The former procedure compared the old and new Valgrind source trees with diff and listed files removed upstream. It is replaced with a comparison of Fjalar’s tracked Valgrind files against the target tree, excluding fjalar/ and REVISION; the instructions say to review the results and append | xargs -r rm to remove them. They specify using rm instead of git rm, explain that LC_ALL=C keeps sort and comm ordering consistent, and state that git commit -a records the other removals.
  • observed — Modified behavior in doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo: The new instructions distinguish Fjalar’s unmodified Memcheck copy from its modified copy, then list modified-copy mc_*.[ch] and memcheck.h files with no counterpart in the target Memcheck directory. Users are told to check each listed file for Fjalar changes before removal, except for Fjalar-specific mc_translate.h.
  • observed — Modified behavior in plan-upgrade-valgrind.md: Step 2 replaces listing old-tree-only files with the documented removal procedure based on files absent from valgrind-new; it specifies that the procedure’s second command handles Fjalar’s memcheck copy.

…regtest-ordering text

codespecs#98 rewrites the "Remove files that have been removed upstream" section,
so this pull request no longer changes it. The regtest baseline text no
longer names make git-update, which codespecs#103 removes.

…ts of pull requests; remove the 3-way-merge alternative

The text that codespecs#98, codespecs#99, codespecs#101, codespecs#103, and codespecs#113 change in the plans is left
as in codespecs#96, so that those pull requests' versions apply when they land.
plan-pre-upgrade.md points to those pull requests rather than restating
them. The "Alternative: a 3-way merge for Coregrind" section is
removed, because codespecs#103's apply-patch-files.sh performs the same 3-way
merge with git apply --3way.
Step 2 removes stale files with rm. For a file in neither valgrind-old nor
valgrind-new, git.script has no git rm, so the file stayed in the index and
step 10's git ls-files check still listed it. Addresses a CodeRabbit
review comment.
