Updates doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo with problems found while planning the Binutils 2.47 and Valgrind 3.27.1 upgrades (see the plans in #105).

This PR is based on master and doesn't depend on any other open PR. #103 depends on it and contains its commits.

Changes

  • Kvasir tests ("Verify current sources pass the regression tests", "Merging the binutils changes", "Testing Fjalar"): the tests build and test the Fjalar in $DAIKONDIR/fjalar, which might not be $INV/fjalar. Say how to check, and mention test-kvasir.sh, which tests $INV/fjalar.
  • Get New Valgrind Regtest Baseline Results: build the baseline in a copy of valgrind-new (a git clone of it, after removing any old copy), never in valgrind-new itself, which generate-patch-files.sh diffs and which becomes the next merge's valgrind-old. Build products there must not end up in the patch files, and from there in Fjalar. (generate-patch-files.sh: check inputs; fail on errors #99 makes generate-patch-files.sh refuse to run if there are any.) Also add the missing ./autogen.sh, which a git clone needs before ./configure. Because the baseline is built in a copy, it can be run at any time, rather than only after the source merge. plan-upgrade-valgrind.md no longer says that the doc builds the baseline in valgrind-new.
  • Merging the binutils changes:
    • --merge=diff3 produces conflict markers, not .rej files; add how to find them, and say to remove them all before compiling.
    • New section on what new Binutils code may need: new headers (which include.patch omits), features to disable (SFrame, as was done for CTF), zstd support, and the system bfd.h possibly being older than the Binutils being merged. It gives the commands that find the bfd.h version in each CI Docker image (with docker run --pull=always, so that an old cached image does not give the wrong answer); as of October 2026, the oldest is Binutils 2.41, in mdernst/daikon-rockylinux-jdk25-plus (Rocky Linux 10).
  • Compiling: after the first make build, rebuild with make -C $INV/fjalar/valgrind/fjalar install (or make -C $INV/fjalar/valgrind install after changes outside fjalar/). Without install, the Kvasir tests silently test the previous build, because they run the installed Fjalar under valgrind/inst.
  • Testing Valgrind: say where each regtest log is: make test writes test-after.log, which is compared with the baseline in $INV/valgrind-new-build/test.log (Valgrind update) or $INV/fjalar/test.log (Binutils update). Delete valgrind-new-build after the comparison.
  • Documenting Changes: there is no "Ignore generated test drivers" section in .gitignore. Say that test programs go in the per-tool sections, and give a command that lists the ones not yet ignored.

Not included: describing check-regtest.sh (from #96) in the regtest sections, a follow-up once #96 lands (item 1 of plan-pre-upgrade.md in #105); the "Remove files that have been removed upstream" section, which #98 changes; and the make git-update section, which #103 replaces.

Testing

- Kvasir tests: they test the Fjalar in $DAIKONDIR/fjalar, which may not
  be $INV/fjalar; mention test-kvasir.sh.
- Files removed upstream: also handle memcheck (Fjalar's copy is
valgrind/fjalar/), and add a post-merge check that Fjalar tracks no
  file that upstream deleted.
- Regtest baseline: build in a copy of valgrind-new, never in
  valgrind-new itself (build products would end up in coregrind.patch);
  add the missing ./autogen.sh.
- Binutils merge: --merge=diff3 produces conflict markers, not .rej
files; new headers, SFrame, zstd, and the system bfd.h version.
- .gitignore: there is no "Ignore generated test drivers" section; say
where test programs go and how to find missing ones.

📝 Walkthrough

The merge guide and upgrade plan update instructions for preparing Kvasir and Valgrind baseline tests, merging Valgrind and Binutils changes, and validating the merged build. The guide describes using a separate Valgrind build clone, selecting the Fjalar checkout for Kvasir tests, resolving merge conflicts, checking compatibility, recording test output, and identifying generated files. The plan updates its baseline-clone and completion steps.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b4213

Merge validation can miss leftover conflict markers or report a failed test command as successful. Correct both checks before relying on the guide.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo: The guide now describes how Kvasir tests select the Fjalar installation under Daikon and how to verify it matches the checkout being merged. It also documents test-kvasir.sh: the script uses or clones Daikon, links its Fjalar path to the target checkout, restores that path if Daikon already existed, leaves the link after cloning Daikon, and refuses to run when the path exists as a non-symlink. A one-command DAIKONDIR override is provided for that refusal case.
  • observed — Modified behavior in doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo: The previous instruction to defer regtest until after the source merge is removed. The guide now says the tests can run any time after obtaining valgrind-new, because they run from a separate copy.
  • observed — Modified behavior in doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo: The regtest instructions now preserve valgrind-new as a pristine clone by cloning it into valgrind-new-build and building and testing there. The guide warns that generated build products could otherwise enter the merge diffs and Fjalar, and directs readers to retain the build copy until its logged results have been compared.
  • observed — Modified behavior in doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo: A note now directs readers to ensure DAIKONDIR/fjalar points to the Fjalar checkout being updated before running the pre-patch Kvasir tests.

Also leave the .gitignore bullet and the baseline-in-a-copy wording to
codespecs#101, and drop the note that steps 3-6 and 10 are out of date, because codespecs#99
and codespecs#103 update those steps.

which is now Rocky Linux 10.

…ts of pull requests; remove the 3-way-merge alternative

The text that codespecs#98, codespecs#99, codespecs#101, codespecs#103, and codespecs#113 change in the plans is left
as in codespecs#96, so that those pull requests' versions apply when they land.
plan-pre-upgrade.md points to those pull requests rather than restating
them. The "Alternative: a 3-way merge for Coregrind" section is
removed, because codespecs#103's apply-patch-files.sh performs the same 3-way
merge with git apply --3way.
